  1. The sight of Dominic's confident posturing in the midst of their grim surroundings grated on Bahr's nerves. His ostentatious demeanor was a constant reminder of the cult leader's unyielding ego, an ego that had wreaked havoc on countless lives. Lessa's strong and straightforward question regarding Everest was met with Dominic's unsettling theatricality. Bahr's jaw clenched as he watched the exchange, his every muscle urging him to intervene, to express the frustration and anger boiling within him. But he knew that would only give Dominic the reaction he craved.

The swordsman's amber eyes, glowing with the ever-shifting light from the prison's gloom, bore into Dominic with an intensity that could pierce stone. He observed the twisted words and false sincerity that dripped from the cult leader's lips like honey laced with venom. Each word uttered was like a dagger, digging deeper into the already wounded psyche of those present. Dominic's reference to Everest as his "brightest star" sent a shiver down Bahr's spine. The contrast between the depraved reality of the situation and the way Dominic spoke was chilling. The physical bars of the cell felt insufficient to contain the darkness that oozed from him.

Then came Lessa's furious outburst, an eruption of the pent-up anger she had no doubt held since the moment she witnessed Dominic's original depravity unravel before her. Her anger was justified, her clenched fists and pointed accusations reflecting the visceral reflex that Bahr, too, suppressed. Dominic's cavalier response, his infuriating shrug, served as a bitter reminder that reason and sanity had no place within these walls. The man was a master manipulator, a skilled deceiver. The Kingslayer remained silent, his internal turmoil hidden beneath a facade of composure. He knew they needed answers, but Dominic seemed intent on leading them further into the labyrinth of his madness.

"And why, pray tell, would I help the likes of you?" Dominic inquired, his sharp emerald eyes locking on to Bahr. His tone had shifted to something a bit more pointed, now. There was still a hint of mystical grandiosity which stained the words, but they rolled off Dominic's serpent tongue in a much more accusatory way than before. "Defilers of the Light, who invaded our home and picked apart our flock at the seams."

It seemed that, having successfully riled up Lessa, Dominic had set his sights on Bahr. Like crossing an item off a checklist - the moment he'd gotten what he'd wanted out of one person, he moved to the next. Bahr remained tight-lipped, not breaking eye contact, to create a vacuum and wait for Dominic to fill the silence with his own voice. He knew a man so narcissistic wouldn't be able to help himself.

"The truth... it's a fragile concept, isn't it? It bends and twists, like the winds in the great plains. But I will give you a morsel to chew on," came the elaboration Bahr had been counting on. It seemed that maybe, finally, they could extract some kernel of actionable information out of this pompous fool. "Everest has gone to a place where the Light shall reveal itself to her. She's not alone. There are others like her, yearning for the salvation that only I can offer." Bahr's golden eyes remained locked onto Dominic, scrutinizing every gesture, every expression, while his mind raced to dissect the man's rhetoric. The urge to intervene, to end this twisted conversation, clawed at him, but he knew they needed more. Instead, his stony visage remained fixed, a mask to conceal the steady tempest of emotions that surged beneath.

Meanwhile, Dominic visibly reveled in the power he held over them, his smile stretched ear-to-ear and gleaming as he left them breadcrumbs of information. Bahr knew that to get to the heart of the matter, they had to navigate this treacherous terrain of manipulation and deceit. And while his silence thus far had awarded them at least something, it wouldn't get them much farther without giving Dominic something to sink his teeth into. Bahr leaned in, his voice a low growl. "Don't play games with us, Dominic. Where is she? What does she - or you - have planned with those children?"

Dominic's eyes gleamed with wicked delight, and he chuckled softly. "Ah, the fire in your heart, Brother Bahr. How I'd missed it. You see, Everest and the others are in the land where their salvation awaits, where the cycle of life meets with its end to make way for the Light." He offered a nod toward Lessa. "Your companion successfully recalled, death is one such ingredient. But I can't simply hand you the key to unlock the secrets of the Light."

The cult leader's response only fueled Bahr's frustration. Each word seemed designed to taunt and mislead.

"Tell us, or I'll find my own way to unlock the truth," Bahr asserted threateningly, his voice unwavering, though anger simmered beneath the surface. The mask he'd worn up to this point was beginning to slip, and he wasn't certain he could maintain the facade for much longer.

Dominic's smile somehow widened, and his voice dripped with condescension. "Oh, you might have the tenacity, Brother Bahr, but do you have the wit?" Bahr's eye twitched, and he opened his mouth to unleash the vitriolic response he'd been holding back - only for Dominic to interrupt with a raised palm, no doubt a moment he'd been waiting for. "When members of my flock search for a home, they aim only for the places nearest to heaven, much like I did when I founded Sanctuary. For heathens like yourselves, used to crawling through muck and darkness, such holy places are surely unfathomable."

Though an excuse to lace more condescension into his theatrics, Dominic had unwittingly provided more information in that last snippet than any he'd forwarded previously.

"Go, seek the truth, if you dare. But beware, for the Light demands sacrifice." With that final cryptic utterance, Dominic leaned back against the cell wall, a satisfied look in his deranged eyes. The enigmatic clues he provided offered a glimmer of direction, which Bahr communicated silently with a knowing glance to Lessa. His patience stretched to its absolute limit, now was as good a time as any to conclude their interview, with the added bonus of getting to do so without giving Dominic what he wanted.

    "That'll do. Guard!"

As the guard was summoned to usher them from the cell and resume Dominic's solitary containment, the smile never left the prisoner's lips. Bahr couldn't help but think that there was still something they were missing, some grand scheme of Dominic's that was so over their heads that everything else was a distraction. But with children's lives on the line, he couldn't exactly afford the luxury of stopping to mull it over. As they made their way through the corridors of the jail back toward the entrance, Bahr broke the silence between the pair, voice reverberating lowly. "You caught that, right?"

  2. Upon Ariel forwarding the possibility of moving forward on horseback, Bahr's expression soured (though he attempted to hide it). Memories of attempting to ride a horse with Lessa flashed before his eyes, and so too did the mebarrassment he'd felt at the time. Bahr wasn't the sort to take easily to things he couldn't fully control, and horses seemed to be one of those things. Though, he knew he'd look like a fool explaining that to the others.

"Walking sounds good. Going a bit slower and having less to pay attention to will better free us up and catch details we might miss otherwise." A likely story, and hopefully one they'd buy without too much prying.

He set his eyes to the north. "That way, then?" he inquired rhetorically, before starting along the path leading out of town in that direction. "Let's not dawdle. Plenty of trees and leaves and wildlife to see."

  3. "Glad to be joining you on another excursion."

It seemed a third had joined the fold.

"Hey there!  Jade Hunter, Hirru!  At your service."

Bahr regarded the newcomer with a curt nod. "Bahr, Kingslayer," he replied concisely, though it felt strange to call himself such. When the man offered food, Bahr held out a palm and shook his head. "Much appreciated, but I filled up before I got here. I'll leave these for whoever else might need them."

No sooner had the words left his lips than Mina appeared, rounding out their grouping into a solid four. A perfect quartet for labyrinth hunting. He regarded the rosy-haired youth with another nod, before Ariel took charge and redirected everyone's attention to a map of the floor, its translucent facade obscuring one of the windows of the tower.

"Let's start with pooling our knowledge of the floor."

Bahr listened thoughtfully while she explained her experience with the floor thus far. She seemed a bit embarrassed that she'd gotten sidetracked during her explorations, to which Bahr cracked a wry grin. "Better than me, I'll admit," he stated, before adding, "This is my first time on a floor above twenty-six. Can't say I know anything at all about this place yet. Although, I will point out that your observations of the local wildlife paint a pretty relieving picture. I'm tired of fighting grotesque monsters."

His amber orbs narrowed into slits while he inspected the map in more granular detail, index finger and thumb cradling his chin as he contemplated potential hiding places for their hunt's focus. "Based purely on the topography, the northern section of the floor looks promising." He circled a large forest that blanketed almost half the floor. "This is the area we've got the least visibility on. The western quadrant is wide open - though that doesn't mean we won't find what we're looking for there. Just means that if there were something out of the ordinary, there's a good chance we'd already be able to see it on the map."

His eyes flickered again to his companions. "If nothing else, the map data we collect in the forest could be valuable for future excursions."

  4. Once again, Bahr's nose had carried him to an unfamiliar place. Where food was concerned, he was helpless to fight the temptation. On this particular instance, he'd found himself at a shop that had exactly what he'd been looking for. What a fortuitous circumstance.

"I'll take twenty of these ones," he stated greedily, pointing at the Smores. It wasn't clear how the delicious desert sandwiches would boost his Evasion, but he was more than willing to find out. Without another word, Demian would find 10,000 col sent his way to pay for the transaction. Bahr dismissed the transaction panel and awaited the scrumptious bounty he'd purchased.

    "Much thanks!"

  5. As Bahr ascended the 28th floor, he couldn't help but marvel at the unique environment he found himself in. The moment he stepped off of the teleport pad, he was greeted by an eye-catching bloom of fall colors. The world around him was a captivating display of autumnal beauty.

Everywhere he looked, the trees displayed a mesmerizing palette of warm hues. Deep oranges, rich reds, and vibrant yellows adorned the leaves, creating a stunning tapestry that stretched as far as the eye could see. The ground was carpeted with a thick layer of crisp, golden leaves that crunched beneath his boots with each step. The air was filled with the earthy scent of fallen leaves and the subtle fragrance of woodsmoke. A gentle breeze rustled through the trees, causing leaves to flutter and spiral gracefully to the ground, adding to the picturesque scene.

In the distance, Bahr could see a towering structure rising above the trees. Its architecture seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The bell tower, a magnificent structure of stone and wood, stood proudly against the backdrop of the perpetual autumn. The tower itself was a sight to behold. Its stonework was adorned with intricate carvings of leaves, vines, and forest creatures, all expertly crafted by skilled artisans. At its peak, a massive bronze bell hung, its surface adorned with intricate engravings that told the tale of the 28th floor.

Bahr couldn't resist the urge to explore this captivating world further. The land where fall reigned eternally was unlike any other floor he had encountered in Aincrad, and he was eager to uncover its secrets and mysteries. With each step, he embraced the tranquil beauty of the autumn season, and the bell tower stood as a silent sentinel, waiting to share its stories with those who dared to venture closer.

The crunching of fallen leaves beneath Bahr's boots would signal his approach to Ariel, who it seemed had been the first of the impromptu group to arrive. He regarded her with a, "Greetings," stopped a few feet away and taking a quick look around. They'd been the only two to arrive thus far. "Thanks for the invite," was the follow-up, offered as his golden hues flickered back to the blonde. "Feels a bit different to be among the first to search out the Labyrinth, I'll admit."

  6. Before much else happened, her gaze locked onto his eyes, the change in the hue of her complexion and expression catching him off guard. Bahr had grown accustomed to concealing his true feelings, but the way she stared at his altered eyes left him feeling exposed.

"Your eyes," she said, tone tinted with disbelief, her own widened orbs betraying a sense of unfamiliarity. Her initial surprise was evident - an understandable reaction. The transformation of his eyes was startling, even for those who knew him well.

Bahr blinked, then nodded in understanding. "Oh, that," he replied, trying to downplay the change. He continued, his own words tumbling awkwardly over hers as both players struggled to find their footing in the conversation.

    "Yeah, it's nothing. Just a-"
    "Sorry. Just didn't expect-"

    "Bahr, isn't it?"

    A welcome interruption.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, even under these circumstances. Lessa has told me so much about you."

In all honesty, Bahr hadn't even noticed the duo that accompanied his more familiar companion. As usual, Lessa had stolen his attention. The smaller of the two, Kyra, efficiently briefed him on the situation, and Bahr listened attentively. The mention of Everest's fixation on Dominic perturbed him deeply. The situation had grown far more complex than he initially thought. Moreover, the lack of any actionable intel was particularly troubling. How could they be expected to act without even knowing where to start?

The discussion continued, and Bahr remained silent, absorbing the information and the thoughts swirling around him. It was clear that emotions were running high, and this situation had struck a nerve with everyone involved.

When Lessa suggested they go see Dominic, Bahr understood her determination. Her concern over Bahr's previous brush with death was evident, but he simply smirked and shook his head. "I'll go with you," he affirmed, his gaze shifting from Lessa to the others. "If there's a chance he knows something about the children, we can't afford to ignore it. Besides..." His smirked widened into a cocky grin, and he smashed a balled fist into his open palm. "I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to rough him up a bit."

There was a small window of silence, before Lilik piped up. "I like his style," she remarked flatly.

Lilik's revelation about her failed attempts to see Dominic surprised both Lessa and Kyra, and Bahr couldn't help but wonder about the cult leader's influence even within the prison walls. This situation had become far more intricate than he had initially imagined, and he was prepared to face whatever lay ahead, even if it meant confronting a dangerous adversary. They'd handled him before, and they could do it again.

As the tension in the group settled, Bahr turned to Lessa, his amber hues filled with unwavering determination. "Let's not waste any more time," he suggested. "We've got a good track record against Dominic, and this time the advantage is ours." Without elaboration, he summoned his menu with a practiced flick and navigated to his messages, composing brief correspondence to an old connection of his.

    Spoiler

    To: @Hestia

We're going to be swinging by the jail to pay Dominic a visit. Please make your men aware we're on our way.

We're pressed for time, and can't afford to get slowed down by red tape.

    - Bahr

With that, the panels collapsed away from view and he regarded the others with a stiff nod. "Should get us through. Hopefully."

Kyra, maintaining her clinical demeanor, nodded in agreement. "I'll do what I can to provide support and guidance in this situation. If there's any psychological insight I can offer, don't hesitate to ask."

"Appreciate it," Bahr replied, turning his attention back to Lessa. "Let's move."

    - - -

The atmosphere inside the jail was oppressive, contrasting the bright colors of the lush landscape that expanded beyond the cobblestone walls. Its haunting and utilitarian design made it a place of confinement and punishment. Bahr and Lessa walked through dimly lit corridors lined with iron bars, the distant echoes of despairing voices reminding them of the grim purpose behind their visit. The flickering torches on the walls cast uneven shadows, and the air felt heavy with tension.

A guard, begrudgingly, led their way, followed closely behind by Lessa and then Bahr. Even with Hestia's forewarning of their impending arrival, the duo had met with some resistance from the guards initially. Their vexing behavior had perplexed the pair, even after Lilik's claims. In more ways than one, they gave the impression that they were guarding him from them, and not the other way around. But a little arm twisting and a Hestia namedrop later, and they were finally permitted entrance to the solitary confinement wing of the prison.

Bahr's eyes almost seemed to glow faintly as they flickered about, absorbing each detail the thick shadows tried to conceal. It wasn't true Night Vision, but it was remarkable what a difference the cosmetic made. Like night and day, he might say, were he one for puns (which he was). Lessa, seemingly less interested in the minutiae of their surroundings, kept her eyes forward and focused. They both knew the danger they were potentially walking into. Dominic was not to be underestimated.

As they approached the cell where Dominic was held, the air grew thick. The guard stationed at the cell door eyed them suspiciously but allowed them to pass. Bahr's ever watchful eyes settled on Lessa's knuckles; whitened as she clenched her fists, ready to confront the man responsible for the chaos that had engulfed their lives. Bahr stood by her side, a silent pillar of support. He knew the risks they were taking, but he couldn't let Lessa face this ordeal alone. As the cell door creaked open, revealing Dominic on the other side, Bahr's gaze bore into the cult leader with an intensity that matched his resolve.

Compared to the charismatic figure they'd encountered in Sanctuary, this man was a pitiful sight. An iron collar spotted with rust hung around his neck, slack enough perhaps to fit one or two fingers in alongside the girth of his neck. This collar was secured against the far wall by three separate chains, each with their own tension, which rooted him to that side of the cell. The space was dimly lit, stray beams of light cascading in from a solitary window that sat too high for him to peer through, which illuminated his unkempt bundle of peppery hair and dingy prison garb.

He sat there, on the floor in that far corner of the room, head hung in eerie silence. After a moment, his chin would tilt upward, emerald green orbs piercing through the dark to connect with those of Bahr and Lessa. In a moment of recognition, his visage began to contort, the edges of his lips curling upward and causing creases to materialize around his eyes. His teeth shone vividly with an unnatural luster, seemingly brightening the dull cell and staving off the shade that enveloped it.

"Hello, Brother Bahr. Sister Lessa," he mused, the rusty links of the chains clanking heavily as he slowly rose to his feet with an unflattering grunt. "Welcome. I've been expecting you."

  7. Bahr's residence on the tenth floor sat in tranquil isolation, surrounded by the ethereal glow of luminescent flora and the gentle shimmer of crystalline formations. The delicate balance of the underground world made every corner of his property feel like a sanctuary, an oasis of serenity amidst the labyrinthine darkness. The soft babbling of the stream, the comforting radiance of the iridescent crystals, and the faint hum of the glowing plants created a harmonious symphony of peace and calm.

Bahr's living room was a cozy retreat within the quiet refuge of his home. The warm glow of the crystals outside filtered through the small windows, casting a gentle and ever-shifting pattern of light and shadow upon the wooden floor. The room was adorned with simple yet tasteful furnishings, a reflection of Bahr's preference for understated elegance. A plush, deep-red couch with a few well-worn cushions sat against one wall, a favorite spot for relaxation. Its rich color contrasted beautifully with the lighter wooden accents of the room. A low wooden table stood at its center, adorned with a small vase of radiant flowers, their soft blue light adding to the room's soothing ambiance.

Against another wall, a bookshelf held a collection of volumes spanning various genres, from ancient tomes of Aincrad's history to contemporary novels and strategy guides. The shelves themselves were interspersed with small, glowing crystals that illuminated the titles in a soft, dreamlike glow. Bahr often found solace in this room, whether it was to unwind after a challenging quest or to immerse himself in the world of a good book. It was a place where he could retreat from the trials of Aincrad and find a measure of peace.

As he sat on the couch one serene evening, bathed in the tranquil radiance of his living room, a notification pinged in his menu. Lessa's name appeared on the screen, a beacon of familiarity. He opened the message, his heart fluttering with a mix of emotions. The echoes of their time together whispered in the corners of his mind, but those days were long gone, and he'd become adept at concealing the deeper feelings that may have still lingered.

    Quote

    To: Bahr

A group of kids from Sanctuary ran away. They still believe Dominic.

Come to the Town of Beginnings. I need your help.

    Oliver is with them.

    Lessa

Bahr's golden orbs, tinted by the ever-shifting glow of his living room, narrowed into slits as they scanned the message from Lessa. The gentle play of light and shadow danced upon his face, casting an otherworldly radiance upon his features. Yet, in that moment, the serenity of his surroundings clashed with the concern that welled within him. Lessa's words held a weight he couldn't ignore, a subtle undertone of urgency that stirred unease in the depths of his being. As he re-read her message, his mind raced, trying (but failing) to understand what had managed to lead Oliver astray.

His visage scrunched briefly as he contemplated his response.

    Quote

    To: @Lessa

    On my way.

    - Bahr

Simple and to the point. With that, he closed the message and rose from his comfortable chair, leaving behind the peaceful confines of his home. He stepped out into the yard, the glow of the crystals guiding his way as he embarked on the journey to the teleport gate.

    - - -

As Bahr materialized in the teleport plaza, a brief moment of disorientation washed over him. The transition from one location to another in Aincrad always felt like a surreal experience. His vision was temporarily shrouded in a flurry of digital particles before solidifying into the vibrant surroundings of the Town of Beginnings' central square. The teleport pad beneath his feet, a circular platform made of polished marble, hummed with an ethereal energy. It was a stark contrast to the more mundane, everyday teleports that brought players from town to town. Here, at the gateway to the first floor, everything felt grander and more significant.

The plaza itself was a bustling hub of activity. Players of various levels and backgrounds hurried to and fro, their avatars displaying a wide array of styles and colors. It was the heart of the town, where adventurers converged before setting off on their quests or journeys to the higher floors. The towering crystal spires that surrounded the teleport pad glimmered with an ethereal light, casting ever-shifting patterns and reflections across the cobblestone that encompassed the gate underfoot. It was as if the very essence of Aincrad itself pulsed through these spires, infusing the plaza with an air of anticipation and adventure.

Bahr took a moment to absorb the sights and sounds of the central square, the echoes of laughter and camaraderie filling the air. It was a world he had grown accustomed to, a world where friendships were forged and destinies were shaped. And in this moment, he stood at the threshold of new possibilities, eager to reunite with Lessa, his closest friend and most enduring friend in this world. With a sense of purpose, Bahr scanned the bustling crowd in search of her. His eyes roved over the various players, each with their unique appearances and weapons. Before long, they settled on a familiar golden mane.

He weaved through the crowd with practiced ease, offering nods of acknowledgment to players he recognized from past encounters. The Town of Beginnings held a special place in the hearts of many, as it was where their journey had begun. Here, they had conquered their initial fears and had taken their first steps toward mastering Aincrad's challenges - Bahr included. And while that pervasive energy still seeped into his pores with each visit, the bustle was little more than an obstacle parting him from her.

Clad in ornate and bright steel armor that gleamed in the soft sunlight filtering through the crystal spires stood Lessa. Her blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders, and her posture exuded confidence. With a determined stride, Bahr closed the distance between them. As he approached, he called out her name, his voice carrying a mix of warmth and camaraderie. "Lessa!" he called with a raised arm. "I'm here."

As nice as it would have been to catch up, Bahr understood that there was hardly any time for platitudes. "Came as fast as I could," he remarked, frows furrowed with concern. "I need more information. Do you know where they might have gone? Did they leave any clues? And what about Dominic? Is he actively trying to sway them, or do they follow him willingly?" All at once, he noticed how pressuring his faux interrogation must have seemed. His thoughts raced, the bond with Oliver serving as an unbreakable thread connecting him to this situation. Bahr understood the gravity of the circumstances, and he was determined to do whatever it took to ensure Oliver's safety and the well-being of the other runaways.

"Sorry," he started, "You probably don't know much more than I do. What do we know so far?"

  8. It had been quite a while since Bahr had visited his dear old friend in the caves of the floor he called home. But his recent acquisition in the fight against the obsidian dragon had given him reason to once again seek out the flamboyant violet-haired youth. With careful footwork, Bahr made his way through the network of caves, eventually happening upon the hidden shop after a few wrong turns.

"Long time, no see," Bahr remarked as he sauntered into the shop, summoning his menu and navigating to the inventory, the unidentified sword materializing moments later as the panels were dispelled. He placed it on the table and peered into the eyes of his silent interlocutor. "Need this one figured out."

  9. Bahr took in the lavish surroundings, the grandeur of Raidou's abode, and the unexpected invitation with a composed exterior. There was an air of calculated opulence here that contrasted with his usual preference for simplicity. He acknowledged Raidou's extended hand with a firm shake, though suspicious leer that betrayed the platitude accompanied it. And as he looked into those Holloweeny eyes, it slowly dawned on Bahr that he'd met this man before.

When the hell had he met Raidou? His memory lapse the year prior must have still had some lasting impressions.

"Thank you for having us, Raidou," Bahr replied, taking a seat as offered. Though he wouldn't admit so aloud, there was an unease that came with the hospitality the pair were receiving. Bahr had anticipated their confrontation would be more... well, confrontational. Instead they were met with smiles and warm handshakes and offers of tea and biscuits (which Bahr refused to touch, as the sickly sweet "beer" he'd sampled earlier still stuck to his tongue).

He couldn't help but glance out of the large window at the view, albeit briefly, before returning his attention to their host. "I understand that sometimes, theatrics are necessary to get a point across. Especially when dealing with those who seem impervious to reason. Your efforts to sway them are commendable." Another hollow platitude, as Bahr's tone of voice may have indicated.

As Raidou explained his motivations, Bahr's thoughts diverged from the noble cause his host was portraying. The description of Hugh's actions and the dire consequences for the city struck a chord with him. It was a stark reminder of how power, when abused, could lead to dire consequences for those who depended on it. But where did that leave Raidou's own misuse of power? "I inquired about your motivations because I'm interested in understanding the reasoning behind your actions," Bahr replied, his tone measured. "You seem to possess a determination to address injustices and potential harm head-on. It's an admirable quality in this world. However, my purpose here today is not semantics."

He paused briefly, eyeing extravagant tea tray, but again deciding against it. "I have a message for you, Raidou. It's a word of caution, a reminder of the responsibilities that come with your position as a Frontliner. While your methods may serve justice, there's a fine line between righteousness and abuse of power. I urge you to tread carefully, for the choices you make affect not only your comrades but the entire player community."

Bahr's words were deliberate, revealing his disagreement with Raidou's methods and the potential consequences of unchecked authority, while allowing room for a response. He had come to deliver a message of warning and guidance, hoping to influence Raidou's future decisions. Much like Pinball, the irony of Raidou's "fat cats" comment was not lost on Bahr, who couldn't help but bring attention to it. "After all. Depending on who you ask, you could be one of the 'fat cats' you claim such distaste for."

  10. As Elora's spear became lodged in the Titanium Warden's knee joint, Bahr's instincts kicked into high gear. He couldn't afford to let her struggle with her weapon while the golem prepared to strike. With a quick decision, he surged forward, aiming to free her spear and push her out of harm's way simultaneously. Bahr's dark blade shimmered with energy as he closed the distance. In a fluid motion, he slashed at the connection between Elora's spear and the golem's armor. The blade's dark energy cut through the metal, freeing her weapon with a resounding clang, sparks flying as steel scraped against steel. At the same time, he used the momentum from his attack to plant his other hand firmly between Elora's collarbones, pushing her back and out of harm's way.

As the golem's massive arm swung down, it missed its intended target, Elora, who stumbled backward but remained unscathed. Instead, the attack found its mark on Bahr, who had placed himself between the golem and Elora. The impact was bone-jarring, and he was sent sprawling across the stone floor, skidding to a stop several feet away. Meanwhile, the golem's arm, unfettered by its collision with Bahr's frame, crashed into the stone floor and sent shards flying.

There was a small cough, and then, through gritted teeth, "Are you okay?" His sword as a crutch raised him to his knees, and then his feet, eyes flickering to the health bar on the peripheries of his HUD. It had taken a significant hit from the powerful blow. An unfortunate sacrifice, but his quick actions had given Elora a chance to regroup and continue the battle. Eyes settled on the Titanium Warden, seemingly off-balance from its swing, and then back to his verdant companion. "Now's the time to rack up more damage, while it's off-kilter. Let's move."

  11. Bahr listened to Elora's candid remarks as they navigated the mysterious dungeon together. His compliment about her determination seemed to catch her by surprise, and she responded with a hint of humility. Elora, on the other hand, shared her preference for company during quests. She found motivation and entertainment in the presence of others, and the idea of tackling challenges alone didn't hold much appeal to her. It was a perspective Bahr could understand, even if he leaned towards solitary pursuits on occasion.

As they descended further into the dungeon, the atmosphere grew more eerie and otherworldly, with cerulean light refracting strangely across the walls. Bahr's next question, devoid of any sugar-coating, prompted Elora to open up about her current circumstances. She admitted that she had ventured into the dungeon alone after being separated from her guildmates, seemingly unintentionally. In response, Bahr didn't press further but instead accepted the explanation.

The two of them continued their descent, and soon they found themselves in a room with a rushing river. Elora's curiosity led her to discover the shallow depth of the river, and an experiment with her chalk revealed a hidden path of light that followed the stream.

"I think we're supposed to follow it." Elora suggested, and Bahr nodded in agreement. With her newfound discovery, they continued their journey deeper into the mysterious dungeon, ready to unravel its secrets together.

As Bahr and Elora followed the ethereal path of light along the river, their journey took them deeper into the labyrinthine dungeon. The eerie glow from the water's surface illuminated their way, casting odd shadows on the walls. The sound of rushing water echoed through the chamber, creating a haunting atmosphere. As they rounded a corner, their eyes fell upon a massive chamber with a towering, metallic figure at its center. The Titanium Warden, a colossal golem made of gleaming metal, stood guard in the heart of the dungeon. Its massive form was imposing, and its eyes, glowing with an eerie blue light, locked onto the intruders.

Bahr and Elora exchanged a glance, recognizing that they had stumbled upon a formidable guardian. The golem, built to protect whatever secrets lay hidden within the dungeon, had detected their presence and prepared to defend its domain. They readied their weapons and took a cautious step forward. "It's slow," Bahr remarked as the Warden slowly came to life, its joints creaking loudly as it took likely its first steps in ages. "If you attack first, I can attack afterward and grab its attention. Although I can't promise I'll be able to do so if you land a crit. Up to you what you want to do."

  12. With the black, scaled sword in hand, Bahr quietly opened his menu and began to navigate. He couldn't help but feel that wielding such a weapon would come with its own set of consequences, and for now, he was content with the sword safely stored in his virtual inventory. After a few swift taps, the sword vanished in a ribbon of light.

It was time to leave this dark and foreboding castle behind. He had achieved his goal, defeating the fearsome dragon, and now he possessed a mysterious and powerful artifact. Exiting the castle, Bahr stepped into the daylight, the fresh air a welcome contrast to the suffocating atmosphere of the tower. The sun bathed the landscape in a warm, golden glow, signaling the beginning of a new chapter in his adventure. Bahr walked away from the castle, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the surrounding wilderness.

In the back of his mind, Bahr thought of who might be able to identify the sword and what, if anything, it could be good for. He hadn't seen Dagger in sometime, and Jackpot... Well, Jackass was a more fitting name.

  13. The blade was as black as the darkest night, with intricate patterns etched into the metal, resembling the scales of the dragon he had just slain. It was a work of artistry and craftsmanship, its design mirroring the fearsome creature it seemed to be inspired by. The hilt was adorned with onyx gemstones that glistened with an otherworldly brilliance.

Carefully, Bahr reached into the chest and grasped the hilt of the sword. As he lifted it from its resting place, he could feel a surge of power emanating from the weapon. It was as if the sword itself held the essence of the dragon he had defeated, a relic of the battle that had just transpired.

The weight of the sword in his hand felt both comforting and ominous, a reminder of the perilous journey he had undertaken. The discovery of this unique and enigmatic weapon marked a turning point in his adventure, promising new challenges and mysteries yet to be unraveled.

  14. "Doesn't feel much like an ending," Morningstar concluded aptly.

"You're not wrong," Bahr included, eyes illuminated by the quest completion panel briefly scanning their surroundings for any unexpected additions to their quest. When none came, he let loose a sigh of relief and dismissed the window. "More like a beginning than anything."

Afterward, he turned his attention again to the NPC that had accompanied them. "I believe you should be safe - for now."

"Y-yes... hopefully..." Levi's trembling tone betrayed a sense of discomfort and unease. Bahr's eyes narrowed. Was Levi scared that their saga had not actually concluded, or scared of the two men who stood before him, that had systematically dismantled the warrior who claimed one of their best. "At any rate... I'm certainly very grateful for your help. Nobody I know would have been able to do what the two of you did." With a formal bow, the NPC concluded, "You have my sincere thanks." Stiffly, the youth stood straight again. "I'll be off now."

    And then he was.

Bahr's attention fell to Morningstar. "I remember," he stated bluntly, expression serious and without a hint or sarcasm or uncertainty. "All of it. Who I was - am. It all clicked while we fought."There was a brief silence, before, "You have my apologies for putting you through all of this for nothing. There's no dramatic reveal or tear-jerking scene. I just... remember."

  15. Bahr cast a sidelong glance toward Elora as they traversed the dark labyrinthine corridors of the dungeon. Although at first annoyed with her sudden shift of tune from sad to immediately happy, which just so happened to conveniently coincide with him relenting to her feminine wiles, her infectious enthusiasm and fiery determination had an effect on him. A subtle lift of his own spirits in the midst of their perilous (albeit so-far uneventful) journey. Her promise to save such sentiments for those who posed a threat elicited a faint quirk of Bahr's lips, an almost imperceptible sign of amusement. She may not have been a seasoned warrior, but her resolute attitude had a peculiar influence that put him more at ease, even within such unfamiliar walls as these.

The duo continued their winding trek through the ever-shifting corridors, where stone sprang to life as though blood ran through its veins. The dungeon's eerie majesty clashed with its foreboding atmosphere, a juxtaposition that commanded silence from the pair. That is, until Elora broke it.

"So...What's the plan when we get to the boss? Is one of us just supposed to keep holding this stuff against the wall, or are we gonna be granted some sort of magical exit? It'd be kind of dick move for them to make us walk all the way back."

Truth be told, it wasn't something Bahr had put much thought into. Some dungeons had quick travel back to the entrance, others didn't.

"When we reach the boss, we'll confront it. And if we defeat it, I suspect there'll be some mechanism or magic to get us out, but we can't rely on that entirely. Always best to have a way to retrace our steps." There was a brief pause as he considered the second part of her questioning. "As for whether we'll need to keep a hand on the wall, I don't think so. But I can't know for sure. When I encountered you, my hand left the wall but the chalk didn't disappear. So I think as long as the wall bearing our mark doesn't shift away, we can afford to take our hands off. Besides..." He plunged his free hand into his inner coat pocket, maneuvering around the small pig that called it home and retrieving two small crystals, which he produced for the curious sapphire orbs inspecting him. "We'll have a way out regardless." With that, he replaced the crystals in his jacket and continued along. Without turning his head, he added, "Also, I don't think you need to trace exactly in my line. As long as both our lines branch from the same original one, we ought to be okay."

As they descended a staircase that seemed to stretch endlessly, Elora's voice once again cut through the tension. Her curiosity about his solo journey drew his attention, and he paused before responding. "I've had my share of companions in this world," he began, his voice carrying a hint of nostalgia, "but sometimes it's necessary to tackle a quest like this alone. Keeps things simpler, less room for distractions." His tone held the unmistakable bitterness of lessons hard-learned.

He then turned his attention to Elora, his amber eyes meeting hers for a brief moment. "Besides, it's not often I find someone as determined as you to accompany me through the darkest depths," he remarked, his tone conveying a level of hesitant respect.

The torch-lit corridor continued to stretch before them, the stairs leading deeper into the dungeon's heart. Their footsteps echoed in the form of stifled shuffles amid the occasional pluck of a water droplet's descent. The torchlight flickered and danced upon the cold, damp stone, creating eerie patterns that seemed to mirror the twists and turns of their path. The air grew thicker with each step, and the sense of isolation deepened. Bahr's golden hues remained watchful, scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger or hidden traps. He couldn't afford to let his guard down in a place like this, and he knew that Elora relied on him to guide them safely through the labyrinth.

"And what about you?" he asked, pointedly. "No bullshit this time."

  16. The duo made their way through the dimly lit streets of the city, heading towards Raidou's estate as Pinball guided them. Bahr's determined strides led the way, with Pinball trailing behind, his cloak concealing his form as they approached their destination.

As they neared the imposing residence, Pinball deactivated his Tracking skill, and his eyes shifted to a more muted hue. He intended to maintain a watchful eye on their surroundings while Bahr took the lead in the upcoming confrontation. It made sense, Bahr supposed, that his companion would err on the side of caution, being that his was a build less stylized for combat these days. There was also something to be said about the youth's attempts to temper his own emotions and make smarter decisions. While Bahr had encouraged him to do so, and was proud of him for it, it seemed the Kingslayer had no room for similar tact on this occasion.

Upon reaching the grand entrance of Raidou's estate, Pinball retrieved a crystal from his inventory, activating it discreetly beneath his cloak. It was a precaution, a means of recording the encounter should it prove necessary later. He nodded to Bahr, a silent signal that it was time to proceed. Bahr took the initiative, stepping forward and raising his hand to knock firmly on Raidou's door. The heavy wooden portal stood between them and their enigmatic target, and as it creaked open, revealing the interior of Raidou's home, blood rushed through Bahr's ears.

This is it, he told himself, somewhat bewildered by the ease with which they'd managed to make their entrance. Had Raidou been expecting them? Or was his security always so lackadaisical?

The room within was dimly lit, with the faint glow of magical orbs illuminating the space. It was adorned with an eclectic mix of furnishings, some lavish and others more rustic, creating an intriguing juxtaposition. And at the far end of the room, seated in a plush chair, was Raidou himself. He regarded Bahr and Pinball with a calm demeanor as they entered, his amber eyes betraying little emotion. The tension in the room was palpable as the two parties faced each other, the weight of unspoken questions and concerns hanging heavy in the air.

Bahr, undaunted by the presence of the Red Wanderer, stepped forward with a determined gaze. "Raidou," he began, his voice carrying the weight of his purpose. "We've heard about your recent actions at the Ronbaru Roundtable. We're here to understand your motives and intentions."

Pinball, hidden in the shadows, watched the scene unfold, his eyes flicking between Bahr and Raidou, ready to intervene if needed. Bahr would be lying if he said the young man's presence didn't help to quell his own apprehension.

"What exactly is it you're doing, flaunting the power of the Frontlines?"

    - - -

    @Raidou

  17. Bahr nodded thoughtfully as he absorbed Pinball's assessment of the situation. He knew better than to underestimate the potential consequences of Raidou's actions, and Pinball's hunch about the lack of a clear endgame resonated with his own concerns - although Bahr had his own opinions on the matter. The notion that Raidou might be trying to do the right thing in his own way was a point of contention for both of them. Bahr had seen enough of the world's complexities to understand that good intentions didn't always lead to positive outcomes.

The scowl that briefly marred Pinball's features didn't go unnoticed, and Bahr couldn't help but wonder about the scout's own experiences that might have fueled his frustration. Pinball's mention of Raidou's escalating threats and demands only deepened Bahr's unease. He had witnessed the ripple effect of such actions before, how they could spiral out of control and lead to unforeseen consequences. When Pinball asserted that he didn't have a role in the situation, Bahr raised an eyebrow but didn't press further. He had learned to respect the boundaries of their partnership, understanding that Pinball had his own reasons for his actions.

Finally, Pinball's request for Bahr to talk to Raidou and assess the situation further brought their conversation full circle. Bahr cupped his chin with his index finger and thumb, expression pensive. He knew that Pinball's request wasn't without merit. If there was a chance to understand Raidou's motives and assess the potential threat he posed, it was worth investigating. Pinball's role as a watcher and gatherer of information had its own unique value, and Bahr trusted his instincts when it came to potential trouble.

After a moment of silent contemplation, Bahr responded with a resolute nod. "I'll talk to him," he agreed, his voice firm. "We need to know where he actually stands, and whether there's a risk of him causing more harm than good. Lead the way, and we'll pay Raidou a visit." Bahr's shoulders squared with determination as he rose to his feet, gathering the thick fabric of his cloak from the barstool and slinging it back over his shoulders.

It was around this time that Bahr realized Pinball still had yet to move. "You are coming along, aren't you?"

  18. As Elora's expression deteriorated into sour disappointment, so too did Bahr's conviction falter. His eyebrows furrowed into a concerned curve, before a twinge of annoyance contorted them.

Her struggle was palpable, and he knew that navigating the challenges of Aincrad could be overwhelming, especially for a player like her who had recently seen a significant increase in rank. He listened carefully to her words, her admission of feeling inexperienced and unprepared for the responsibilities that came with her newfound status. Bahr could sense her determination, even in the face of self-doubt. Elora's stammered speech conveyed her desire to contribute to the battle, to prove herself despite the doubts that gnawed at her. It was a struggle many had faced, the constant quest for strength and purpose in a world where both were as good as illusion.

And it pissed Bahr off that this dainty elf's little speech and puppy dog eyes had actually worked. He hadn't intended to know, or care, about any of this.

He waited patiently as she explained her predicament, her voice wavering at times but always carrying the unmistakable sincerity of her intentions. Bahr respected her honesty, even as she expressed her concerns about holding him back. In truth, there was a particular resonance Bahr felt toward her plight. Had he not once been there, not long ago?

"God damnit," he finally uttered. "Alright. I get it. But you gotta cut it out with those eyes and the self-deprecation." Because apparently, I'm a massive pushover.

Vacating his eyes from the young woman, Bahr set his sights back the way he came. "If you're coming from a dead end, we ought to go this way," he suggested, gesturing toward the empty corridor to their side. The stony labyrinth stretched before them like a maze carved from the very heart of the earth, its jagged walls and winding passages casting eerie shadows in the dim light that eked out from the endless tapestry of dark clouds roiling above. "Let's go." Bahr, his ivory hair gleaming faintly in the waxy light, took the lead and began walking, the chalk pressed firmly to the wall all the while.

The air was heavy with the scent of damp stone and the distant echoes of unseen creatures that skulked between the endless layers. Each step they took reverberated through the ancient rock, a reminder of their relative solitude. He knew that the labyrinth was as treacherous as it was unpredictable, and they couldn't afford to be separated. The walls seemed to shift and change as they moved forward, the very stone itself rearranging to create new pathways and block off old ones. As Bahr looked over his shoulder to ensure Elora was following, a thought occurred to him.

"I have an idea," he vocalized absent-mindedly, coming to a halt abruptly. He reached across to where the chalk rested against the wall and grasped the end between the index finger and thumb of his other hand, twisting until the enchanted artifact split into two. He turned, offering the new piece to his companion. "The chalk hasn't whittled away at all. I'm pretty sure we can use it infinitely. Here, if you take this and start your line inside the one I've been tracing, you should be able to find your way back to the entrance even if we end up separated somehow."

  19. A protracted silence hung between them, a quiet tension that was broken only when Pinball finally spoke.

"Would it surprise you if I told you I was just feeling lonely?"

The playful tone in Pinball's voice was a rare departure from their usual exchanges. In response, Bahr cracked a wry grin.

"Lonely, huh?" he replied, voice laced with mock concern. "Well, I know I'm not exactly the most comforting company. But I'm here, aren't I?" Bahr took another sip of the underwhelming elven brew, his eyes fixed on Pinball as the scout finally revealed the reason for their meeting - the enigmatic figure known as Raidou. As the brusque tapestry of words uncoiled from Pinball's lips, Bahr nodded thoughtfully, dissecting each inflection and expression as though they held the key to unraveling the mysteries of life itself. The young man had, yet again, managed to pique his interest.

Despite the tension that often simmered beneath the surface of their interactions, there was a sense of familiarity and trust in Pinball's speech. Bahr knew the youth possessed a unique talent for weaving tales and uncovering hidden truths in the virtual world they called home. As Pinball recounted the audacious exploits of the Red Wanderer, Bahr's mind worked tirelessly, processing the information and considering the implications. Occasionally he'd raise a brow in amusement at the audacity of it all, neglecting any further interaction so as not to disrupt his interlocutor's flow. He could visualize the chaos that must have ensued when Raidou made his dramatic entrance. The scout's even-keeled storytelling had a way of bringing events to life, even in the dimly lit tavern.

"A dude in red threatening the representatives and challenging the established order," Bahr mused, scooting his still mostly-full vessel of ale across the countertop Pinball's way. Rolling his eyes, Bahr sarcastically remarked, "We've never known anyone like that, have we?" He absently tapped his fingers against the polished oak, letting the statement find its mark before leaning back in his seat. "Seems to be the type to enjoy making a splash. But what's the endgame here?" His palm had turned upward. "You don't disrupt a council of NPCs just for the thrill of it. To send a message, maybe."

Still, Bahr's eyes remained latched onto Pinball's, amber hues ablaze in the flickering candlelight. He had questions, of course, but he knew Pinball was selective with the information he shared. There was always a hidden layer to his actions and motives, a layer that Bahr had yet to fully unfurl. "And what's your role in all of this?" Bahr asked, his tone neutral but probing. He knew Pinball wouldn't be involved in this matter without a reason, and he was curious to see how much the boy was willing to divulge.

"At any rate, I know you didn't invite me here just for gossip. Or this syrup they call 'ale,'" he concluded. "What's our plan regarding this guy? Have you already tracked him?" Bahr's words were laden with a sense of purpose, demonstrating his readiness to act.

  20. Mirrored bulbous reflections of text bounced from Bahr's amber orbs as they skittered across Pinball's message. It had been some time since he'd heard from the coal-haired youth. And while his impersonal tone of his message belied any sense of camaraderie, at least this time Bahr could get a drink out their correspondence. It wasn't like he was going to find what he was looking for here, anyway. Once the location data had integrated into his navigation, Bahr dispelled the fluorescent panel with a practiced flick of his wrist.

With a soft huff, he pushed his prone body away from the damp, mossy earth upon which he'd waited, thistle and twigs cascading from his frame as the makeshift camouflage disintegrated. After taking a moment to dust off any clinging debris and clumsily fumble the sweat-soaked bangs from his eyes, he started off in the direction of the nearest settlement. Through open ears and peripheral glances, Bahr took note of the landscape as he trekked, scanning for any disturbances. Unfortunately for him, no such outliers pierced the evergreen mosaic or its tranquil soundtrack.

By contrast to his point of origin, the twenty-third floor was a desolate wasteland. War had ravaged the landscape, leaving artifacts of its cruelty littered about; weapons, armor, skeletal remains. The sweetness of lush undergrowth had been pushed out by the stench of decay and brimstone, the pungent fetor carried aloft by a thick, persistent miasma that clung to the trachea and lungs. Where there had once been the snaps of twigs underfoot, now were the muted thuds of boots through soot. The Kingslayer pulled his mask above his nose and pressed on, praying (against his better judgement) that the interior of whatever hovel Pinball had found could better shield him from the ever-present squalor of such a putrid environment.

When he finally found the tavern, it wasn't hard to find Pinball. Save for the bartender, looping his glass polishing routine, there sat a single figure. Lanky and unassuming, the youth nearly blended into the darkness at the far end of the the bartop. Bahr gave Pinball a quick nod of acknowledgement as he ventured further into the foyer, the heavy clunkiness of steel boots against polished wood announcing his presence. "Ale, please," Bahr directed toward the barkeep, stride only slowing once he'd reached the vacant seat beside his intended interlocutor. He shed his crimson cloak and draped it across the backrest of the stool before taking his seat, freshly poured elven ale finding its way into his palm just as his rump hit the cushion.

One long sip later, and Bahr's visage twisted with confusion. Why was it so sweet? A momentary glance toward his partner offered no illumination. Slowly, he returned the dainty mug to the countertop, and shifted himself to better face Pinball. "Not the best beer I've had," he admitted with a nod and casually disappointed expression. "Tastes like discount Jolly Rancher."

Another pregnant pause, before, "Alright. Let's hear it."

  21. "A way out? Nah, you've got it all wrong! I'm not looking for a way out, just for my..."

Admittedly, Bahr sort of tuned her out. He wasn't particularly interested in whatever excuses she was concocting. The unwavering shimmer of anxiety in her eyes, coupled with the innocuous equipment, gave Bahr all of the information he needed. If she were in trouble, he would help her - regardless of however coy she wanted to act about it.

"I'm Elora, by the way --"

Sheepishly, he saw a small hand extended toward him.

"Bahr," he replied, extending one of his own palms to meet with hers. Mentally rewinding briefly as he shook her hand, Bahr realized that she was trying to join him in his journey into the bowels of the labyrinth. In typical foot-in-mouth fashion, he'd all but given her the 'affirmative' to join his party through a combo of selective hearing and body language. Was she aware of the consequences of such an act? Was she truly prepared to take on what lurked within these seemingly infinite walls?

Was Bahr truly prepared to usher her through in one piece?

For a moment, a scene flickered into view before his eyes. A lumbering skinless knight in obsidian armor bearing down on a young blonde. The fear evident in her cerulean eyes as its blade plunged into her chest and skewered her to the ground. Her health bar fading from green to yellow, and then from yellow to red, as the thin line separating her from death grew ever nearer with each passing second. He'd barely gotten Lessa out with her life, back then - and she was experienced. As the illusion gave way and Bahr found himself yet again staring into the visage of the verdant-haired youth before him, he got ahold of himself and relinquished her hand from his grasp.

"Forgive me for saying so, but I'm not sure that's the best idea," he revealed calmly, gesturing toward her slender frame. "With the quality of your gear, I'd be surprised if you could take more than a few hits from the mobs around here." He shifted his weight back a bit, free hand coming to a rest on his belt. He was careful not to let his eyes linger too long on her body. "I won't tell you not to do it. But, if you decide to, I can't be held accountable for anything that happens to you."

  22. Bahr had attempted to set himself up to be more difficult to hit, but it appeared his efforts had been futile. The line Koga carved straight through him sent his health bar plummeting at an alarming rate. Whatever small measure of time the Stun had been afflicted against him, it had been more than enough to allow Koga to close the small distance that had existed between them.

Again his HUD breedled at him, this time indicating two other statuses. Burn and Rend. He could feel the heat inside of him, whatever amalgamation of ones and zeros comprised the interior of his torso. Did he even truly have organs, in this world? He didn't know. All he could tell for certain was that he was burning from the inside out.

"This is all the 'Kingslayer' can offer me?" Koga's annoyance was evident, both in his tone and expression. As Bahr turned to face him, he would see a completely different person than the man who had first approached him. Brows furrowed and ugly as their hairs split and pricked in odd directions. Lips contorted into a frown that wrinkled his chin. He wasn't just annoyed, he was furious. "If you're not going to give this fight all you have, I might as well just walk away now."

Bahr remained silent for a moment, posture as relaxed as it had been before Koga's strike in spite of the Burn's influence and the continual drainage of his health pool. After a moment, he finally responded. "My apologies," he replied, voice modulated through the mask in a way that deepened and contorted his voice. The response had been cool. Calm. There was no urgency in the way he spoke. "I was under the impression that this was a 'friendly challenge.' It seems I was mistaken."

The youth was practically bubbling with excitement and anticipation. He had something to prove. But he didn't know that Bahr wasn't the man Koga thought he was. Whatever accomplishments Bahr had claimed in his past life, they were all detached from him now. He couldn't remember any of it. And while he still clearly possessed some remnants of his prior muscle memory, it wasn't enough to make up for whatever true experience he'd had before.

After a few more moments, Forgotten King's Spite evaporated from Bahr's left hand in a ribbon of light. As it departed, Dawn's Demise filled in the absence of a weapon in his right palm. "I have no way of knowing for certain," Bahr began, raising the blade to eye level to inspect it, "but I have reason to believe this is the weapon I used back then. Every time I hold it, it feels at home in my hand.

"The one you saw before has always felt hollow and weak by comparison. It doesn't swing properly. It's a clunky little thing, in the way it's so light I can't really feel it. This..." He rose the blade and allowed his arm to fall a couple times, as though to test the weight. "This one feels right. Like an extension of myself."

Bahr's arm, and consequently his blade, fell to the side. He crouched at the knees again, leaning forward to prepare himself for the next strike. "Moreover, now it's in my dominant hand." His mask hid his smirk. "Let's start over."

  23. She stumbled backward, crashing into him with all the ferocity and elegance of a lost baby walrus. With a thud, her back connected with his chest for the briefest of moments, the impact swaying his frame with all the force and grace of an angel's fart, before she recoiled as though her spine had met with hot coals. She spun in a most ungracious manner, screaming some sort of animalistic, shrill howl that made Bahr's skin crawl the same way nails on a chalkboard might. She brandished a weapon - polearm - and pointed it in the swordsman's face. Bahr cocked his head as curses escaped her lips, her closed eyes unable to discern that the man before her felt neither threatened, nor threatening.

A girl. Just... a girl. Here, in this place. Which wouldn't ordinarily be unusual, if it weren't for just how out of place she seemed to be. The Players of this floor carried themselves as a distinguished lot, noses pressed to the air, and saunter in their gait. Weapons and armor adorned with gold and jewels. Such seemed to be the preference among the higher leveled Players - or, at least, the ones he'd found around these parts. The sorts that took themselves so seriously they had to make it readily apparent with their gaudy garb. In Bahr's experience - so far anyway - it was the unassuming ones that could truly hold their own with the best of them. Yet, somehow, this woman didn't fit into either category.

Her equipment seemed reminiscent of something he'd see on one of the lower floors. Basic armor, basic accessories. The only thing that particularly stood out to him was her spear, which had some sort of unique quality to it. He again cocked his head, this time to the other side, eyes very conspicuously examining the weapon. Not that she could tell, with her eyelids glued shut like that.

Once he'd had his fill of the weapon, his eyes flickered to her other features. She was scrawny- no, slender, with verdant locks that hugged her cheeks and cascaded like rivers of emerald over her shoulders. When she finally mustered the courage to take a peek at him, those eyelids would unfurl to reveal a rich blue topaz iris. Her ears extended beyond the sea of green, much further than any reasonably should, which somehow added to her overall charm. She was a cute, dainty little thing. Fragile-looking. Bahr instinctually felt the desire to protect her, but knew better. Things in Aincrad were never quite as they seemed.

"I mean you no harm," he assured her, placing one hand on his hip and allowing the other to fall slack to his side. His fingers idly rolled the chalk they held, the roundness of the cylinder familiar in his grip. It was around this time that he noticed she herself had no chalk, judging by the way both her hands wrapped around the shaft of the weapon. Ah, I see, he mused. She's lost.

Bahr reserved his judgement, understanding that he would likely be in the same quandary had he not stopped to retrieve the enchanted chalk from the (overly pushy) elderly gentleman. Though, however he may have tried, there was no stopping the wry smile that crept across his cheeks. "Put that thing away," he directed nonchalantly, gesturing toward the spear. "Save it for the things that want you dead." For the first time since their meeting, Bahr peered past her to see what lay beyond. Which was, of course, a dead end. Not the first he'd found since he started this journey.

While she seemed lost, Bahr didn't want to make any assumptions. "I'm heading to slay a mob," he informed her. "Big, hulking thing. Supposedly drops an important smithing material. I'd like to get my hands on it." He looked back over his shoulder, then to the line he'd traced with the chalk back to the maze's entrance. "If you're looking for a way out, you need only follow the line. It will lead you to the entrance."

With that, Bahr considered his work done. The woman had made it this far on her own, had she not? Surely she would find her way back to safety were she to follow his instructions. But as he turned away from her, a dreadful emotion overcame him, along with visions of what-ifs. Her body torn in two by a savage beast. Her frame skewered by a dozen lances at the bottom of a pitfall trap. A variety of horrific and grueling deaths, all which possibly awaited her on her way back toward the labyrinth's entrance. He'd ran into no such hurtles on his way, but knew these walls changed. There was no telling what she may run into out there.

Reluctantly, he looked back at her. "Do you require an escort?"

  24. It was almost amusing how unaware they were. And loud. If they had any intention of concealing themselves, they were doing a piss-poor job of it. But something told Bahr that they hadn't the faintest care in the world. After all, it was only the eighth floor, right? It couldn't possibly be that dangerous, right?

Bahr could have struck them all down where they stood. Not that he had any intention of doing so - it was just the fact that he could. Player Killers didn't abide by the guidelines of system-sanctioned duels. There was nothing here protecting them from someone like Bahr other than his own conscience. What if he'd been someone else?

A familiar face softened Bahr's criticisms. Koga, a man he'd met before. A man he'd fought, and who'd fought back against him. Well. If nothing else, this was a party that was in good hands. And if Koga's skill and power was any indicator of the company he kept, Bahr bargained that the rest of these misfits likely had tricks up their sleeves as well. Bahr still wasn't pleased with the nonchalant attitude they carried as a group, but tried to remind himself that not everyone had the same temperament he did. Possibly, Bahr was overthinking the whole situation anyways.

It was time to make himself known.

He silently strode up alongside Koga, looking outward over the flower bed parallel to him. "You're right to be cautious," he reassured the swordsman, polygonal panels slowly unfurling around his frame to change him from translucent to solid. Tangerine and obsidian covered his visage, masking his features from the party. Rather than giving the party time to adjust to his impromptu appearance, he barreled ahead. "As you've already deduced, this is more than likely Cardinal's doing. Take a look at these."

He held out his left palm before Koga, revealing a pair of simple knitting pins. Black. He nodded toward the others to come and take a look as well. "I found these while searching the flower bed. They're an item unlike any I've seen." To make the elaboration easier, he tapped on the artifact with his right index finger. In accordance with the prompt, a panel materialized that divulged more information.

"When I wielded them, I was unable to activate any Sword Arts. It doesn't even denote the weapon type, and it's labeled "Legendary" rather than Rare, Perfect, or even Demonic. I don't know what to make of it."

His voice probably sounded more intimidating than it should have, modulated through the mask that he'd still neglected to take off. While he knew Koga, he was still unfamiliar with the others. He wasn't keen on revealing himself to them just yet.

"It can't be a coincidence that these appeared here, where all of this is happening," he postulated, gesturing to the slowly dying flower bed. "But this is as far as I got before the three of you came along."
