About: History/personality

Sometimes you draw the short straw.  That's just the way it is and exactly how Ishida views his childhood.  He didn't choose which kind of life he was born into but he sure as hell did everything in his power to escape it.  His parents were only parents in title as they exhibited none of the familial traits or instincts that typically were associated with those in charge of your growth as a human being.

He was raised on the outer rim of Ikebukuro, an enterprising entertainment hub located in Tokyo, Japan.  The conditions he was subjected to as a child could borderline abuse but such things were often overlooked by anyone who could have done anything about it.  His parents' house was nothing to be proud of--a small two bedroom shanty stacked with boxes of aging merchandising material that had no chance of making it in today's market.  It was hard for Ishida to call his bedroom his own when there was only floor space enough for his bed roll among the dusty boxes otherwise dominating the real estate.

Year after year, he wore the same clothes until they fell apart or he could no longer comfortably fit into them and when they didn't, he would have to go rummaging through donations, or the garbage, to find something suitable.  For the most of his meals, he fed from the scraps that his parents left him or relied on the generosity of his limited number of friends.  It was a tough road all throughout public school but that didn't deter him for as he grew older, he came to rely on himself more and more.

By the time he hit secondary school, no longer was he nibbling on scraps of tonkatsu or dehydrated ramen but enjoying full-fledged, hot meals, paid for by money out of his own pocket.  Ishida was working jobs--any job--that he came his way in order to liberate himself from his previous life.  Some of the work he did, he was not proud of but he couldn't afford to be proud when he couldn't tell the difference between a sleeve-hole and a torn hole when putting on a shirt.  In the beginning he swindled, stole, and acted as courier for illegal goods but once he was able to secure and furnish his own apartment with a enough in the bank to get by, he dropped the sketchy gigs and worked honestly.

People hardly recognized him in the last years of school but he wouldn't let them forget it.  Ishida had no problem reminding people of who he was and how many obstacles he had overcome to get where he was--and how he was better than them for it.

At least, that's the sob story he told everyone.  Fortunately for him, not a lick of it was true.  The worst thing that had happened to him in his life was the divorce of his parents but even then, that wasn't much of an issue for him because of the lack of impact it made on anyone's life.  His father moved out, remarried and became the primary caretaker of Ishida and his bratty twin sisters.  His father's occupation as a corporate executive for a Tokyo-based electronics company often resulted in worldly business trips and late nights where his stepmother was left in charge of Ishida and his sisters--if you could call it that.  She was nothing but a pawn to them; they had the run of the house when father was away and then after a few years, had the run of it even when he was home.

The children never went without and had just about everything they could have possibly imagined in the way of toys and hobbies but that didn't stop Ishida from becoming bored.  When the boredom started to seep in, is when trouble started to happen.  One of Ishida's favorite pastimes was spending time on the internet under an anonymous online handle, wasting hours causing mischief and stirring up rumors about those closest to him in real life.  Overall, he had a great time at the expense of others but even that grew old in time and it was about then that Sword Art Online came about.  A virtual MMO?  Of course, he had to be apart of that!  Just think of how much trouble he could cause fun he could have in a near-lifelike world where no one knew who he was!  His tune changed a little bit when he found out that the game he was apart of was a death trap and he was pretty much doomed rot there.

Virtues:

Self-motivated - Ishida is a self starter in all things.  When he sets his mind to something, he will do everything within his power to accomplishing it.  He had to learn at a young age that there wouldn't always be people around to hand a good life to you, so if you wanted it -- you had to make it yourself.

Outgoing - Life is too short to not seize any and every opportunity to find personal happiness.  Ishida is not one to stay back and keep to himself while others actively embrace life; he will be the one of the first, if not the first, to jump at the chance for an adventure or new experience.

Compassionate - It is a hard world out there; Ishida knows.  The tough upbringing he was subjected to didn't leave him with a bitter taste in his mouth but an understanding that allows him to be more accepting and compassionate towards people who come from all walks of life.  As bad as he might have had it, he knows that there are others who have had it worse and may not know how to properly convey the suffering they've endured.  Ishida does his best to see through caustic behavior and accept the person beneath. // Although it might not always be real, Ishida will play the part of compassionate just because that's the persona he's created for himself in Aincrad.  Whether or not he will be able to keep it up throughout his entire stay, time will tell.

Flaws:

Arrogant - Ishida is confident in his abilities -- perhaps too confident.  He views his triumphs in life as acts of superiority and has no trouble telling that to anyone who'll listen.  He has been able to accomplish everything that he has because he is better, not because he was fortunate or lucky at any given moment.

Hedonistic - Who doesn't love the best things in life?  The best food, the most expensive toys, the prettiest of companions -- Ishida certainly does.  Ishida lacked much in the material goods department as a child, which left him for a deep yearning for such things as he grew older.  Once he was able to provide for himself and have a taste at the good life, he knew he could never go back. // He has always known nothing but the good life and to take it away would be annoying.

Overambitious - It is easy for Ishida to set his sights too high.  Without intervention, he will always shoot for the stars even if it the objective is wildly unreasonable.  He wants nothing more than to succeed, succeed, succeed as he is known to occasionally base his self-worth on his achievements.
