[F5-PP] Raiders of the Lost Cargo! <<The Traveller>> (Shirien)

Recommended Posts

Having found himself once more of Floor 5, int he town of Armadillo, Nikodemus sighed within his ornate armor. The heat did not bother him, but the sand would soon be an issue he wished he could avoid, but no longer could. One quest had remained on this floor for him, and one he had put off. Walking through the crowded streets, Nikodemus sought out the NPC he had heard of. Standing at at a crossroads between 2 different streets and waiting for a fruit cart to make a turn and move down the lane before him, Nikodemus felt eyes on him from a side alley. Looking over, Nikodemus saw a figure wrapped in thick cloaks of a dark color. His hand had drifted to his axe in a fluid motion of muscle memory despite being in a safezone.

As the figure approached it cleared it's throat and spoke. "Good sir, I hear you are looking to help find a missing cargo. I am the owner of that cargo, and wish it returned to me within two full days. Will you help?" The voice was feminine, and Nikodemus heard the ruffle of the cloak against a slender frame wearing naught but cloth breeches and tunic. Nodding, Nikodemus spoke low. "Yes. I will retrieve the cargo. And within the 2 day timeframe. Where was it last seen?" With a shift of the layers of cloaks, a slender hand came forth and opened a HUD menu. With a chime, Nikodemus saw the <<ACCEPT>> screen appear before his eyes. Tapping the button, Nikodemus heard another chime and then noticed a marker on his map. Nodding, he turned and began to walk through the crowds.

As he neared the main entrance to the town, Nikodemus sent a message out to any who would be willing to journey with him for this. After sending it, he prepared himself for the journey, assure his equipment was properly sealed and that he had enough with him to prevent harm. Once he had finished preparing, Nikodemus sat down and began to whistle a tune and await any response.

Shirien was quite fond of the fifth floor. He always had a weak spot for these types of biomes and he was happy to express it to the people he was partied with the last time he was there. It seemed not everybody shared his love of desert societies and stories though, he noticed a lot of people sweating and groaning while he was sipping his chilled drink to keep his heat somewhat regular. it was only natural you'd come to feel miserable if you didn't take care of yourself.

Shirien's ear perked a bit when he heard the familiar notification noise indicating he had gotten a message. Humming in thought he scanned it and got the jist. He opened up his notes and started flipping through, trying to figure out what 'The Traveler' referred to before finally finding the quest vaguely described. He was going to refuse but then he noticed the name was familiar. He had met this player before and decided it was worth the effort in that case. Flipping his hood over his head he leaves the cool shaded building he had been resting in while typing up a message back to Niko. The message told the armored player that Shirien was on the way and a few minutes later he came into view. When Shirien spotted his would-be partner in this quest he waved and spoke once he was close. "Hey there, Niko, nice to see you again." Shirien says with a friendly smile showing from under his hood. His outfit hadn't changed much since the last time they had grouped up so he hoped he was recognizable. "This time we're going out there without any high levels, hm?" He chuckled softly, still grateful for the help Takao had given them all back then.

Hearing the chime of a new message, Nikodemus read through it. Knowing someone was en route to assist, Nikodemus closed his HUD and began to relaxe before the coming hike into the desert. After a bit, Nikodemus became aware of footsteps nearing him. Opening his icy blue eyes beneath his helmet, Nikodemus glanced at the young man and then stood and raised his hand in a hailing manner. He knew the player from a dungeon crawl he had went on with other players. Keeping his helmet on, Nikodemus gave a curt bow and then spoke. "Wilcommen Herr Shirien. Nein, we shall be alone. Not much need of fighting per se. Simple search and recover job. Worst case scenerio, we will come into contact with some minor mobs, maybe a bandit or two. Nothing to worry over. I am sure we both will do fine. My main concern is the verdammt sandstorm that will spawn the moment we step from the safezone... It has an elemetal effect. We can occasionally take damage from the sand, even in the strongest armor. Here is hoping Weyland is on our side today... When you are ready, we will move on."

Shirien blinked as the German was mixed into the words but the conversation and intent remained clear to his mind if nothing else. He was thankful for spending well over a decade on the internet, without it he may not have learned to understand what would otherwise be gibberish to someone who can't fill in blanks. Once NIko was done filling him in on the situation though he nodded and without skipping a beat said "I see. Well, I have a potion at the ready for if things get dicey. Hopefully I won't need to use it though." He shrugs his shoulders and turns his eyes towards the sandy horizon and says "I'm ready to go now. You're the best defended between us, so I vote you lead the way." He grinned, not a coward he liked to think, just very stuck in his ways with being strategic when it came to MMOs. Until his stealth skills increased vastly he wasn't too keen on the idea of being in front of someone in heavier armor. That said he flicked his dagger out of its sheath in preparation for the journey ahead while taking out a water bottle and keeping it clipped to his belt along with his potions for if he got thirsty on the way. "I'll back you up if anything burrows out of the sand or something, don'tcha worry about that!" He was at least a little more confident than the last time he had been here.

Nodding the the young man, Nikodemus turned slowly and began heading through the gates of the town of Armadillo. 30 feet beyond was the safezone, and the inevitable storm to come. With a heavy sigh, Nikodemus readied his axe and shield and continued forwards. He had no doubt they would be safe from mobs and the like, but he was annoyed by the fact that they had to deal with this storm. Upon approach of the safezone, Nikodemus peered past the invisible barrier and at the gloomy clouds beyond. With a deep breath, he stepped through the barrier and into the open area beyond.

As his foot touched the sand beyond and he continued his journey forward, the air around them began to pick up, blowing bits of debris and sand about. The thick grey clouds above became black within the span of a heartbeat, and the wind began to howl as the sand was torn from it's resting places among the desert floor and hurled about the two players. Feeling the sand begin to strike his armor, he bit back a curse and trudged forward. So far, his armor and the seals about the seams held, and he was not taking any form of damage. With a prayer to Weyland, Nikodemus kept placing one foot infront of the other and moved along, one arm before him to block the sand from his eyes, the other at his side with shield ready.

Shirien followed after the heavily armored player only a step behind him and to the side. He watched as the storm grew in front of them as they approached, a sense of worry crossing his face as his free hand gripped his hood and held on, tugging it lower so it wouldn't blow off with the wind  His leather armor was well made as well as the cloth that rested under it, but that didn't change a thing to the storm and he knew it. He just had to keep calm and keep walking forward along with Niko towards the cargo indicated on his map. Just when he thought the storm wasn't going to get worse it did and he watched as sand was blown up like the slash of a blade here and there. "This is... Pretty intimidating~" the hooded player says while trying to hide his nerves.

He kept his eyes glancing out around his arm now and then while shielding himself and gripping his dagger tightly for fear it would get blown out of his grasp and be lost forever in the sands. He was spared any damage for now as he trekked forward against the strong winds. Thankfully the tightness of most of his clothes didn't give the storm much to push against him with. That was another aspect where Niko likely had an advantage in his mind, the sheer weight of his gear likely grounded him while Shirien worried if he was much baggier he'd blow right away!

Cursing angrily, Nikodemus kept his pace up. The storm pushed against him, but his natural weight and the weight of his armor kept him stable and pressed down. With each step, Nikodemus felt a sudden burst of air and the sand around him become harder hitting. This was the elemental effect. Gritting his teeth, he pressed on, his armor still sealed from the sand so far. Keeping an eye on his and Shiriens health gauges, Nikodemus grumbled about the desert being a place for naught but demons and lizards. Stalking onwards, he kept heading towards the blip on his map, knowing it would be a long days walk to it. He looked back once, seeing the form of Shirien behind him, and then pressed on further. His armor clattered with the tinkling of millions of grains of sand slamming against it, his eyes were kept shielded by an upraised arm, and his shield still sat gripped in the other ready for use.

Shirien forced himself forward against the rough weather, digging his legs into the sand with each step to ground himself as he kept pace with his partner in this quest. In the back of his mind he felt a sense of deja va going through him and he couldn't help but let out a laugh as he realized what was so familiar about this. It reminded him of a game he played before about two cloaked figures exploring a desert together while advancing towards a brightly lit mountain in the distance. Getting a slight thrill of motivation he quickens his pace. Each step came faster than the next as he shielded his eyes until he was standing side-to-side with the armored player in defiance of the storm. Adrenaline from the fear was starting to settle itself in his body and the storm became less intimidating and more another asset in this massive game to him!

With teeth gritted, Nikodemus moved along the dunes getting ever closer, but still so far away. With a curse, Nikodemus felt the elemental effect press against him again, slowing him by a fraction, and then stop. His luck held once more and he prayed it would continued. Looking to his side, Nikodemus saw Shirien come to be side by side with him and then looked forward. The dunes curved up and down, left and right, and the duo managed to cover them all in a unified pace. Seeing nothing but the sandy floor about him, and even more sandy air, Nikodemus muttered loudly. "Let's hope no verdammt rocks pop up to suddenly. Else we may be eating more sand, and buried by it before we can stand once more!" With that, he kept soldiering on towards their goal. He wanted to get there, grab the items, and return before they were turned to sandblasted bones.

Shirien nodded in agreement, not liking the idea of getting buried or eating sand. "As long as the rocks don't fly up and smash my face in with these winds, I'm happy." He says with a slight strain in his face as a particularly rough gust of wind had him stand still and brace for a few seconds before it died down and he could continue marching forward with his hands clenched into tight fists. It had been quite some time since he had to exercise quite to this extent for a continued amount of time, but he was confident even his real body could put up with it for a fair while longer. He reaches down and grabs his bottle of water, aiming it so the opening was facing away from the breeze as he took a sip so no sand got in before recorking it and putting it back in place to keep himself cool and hydrated in the storm.

Stalking forward still, Nikodemus grumbled more and kept storming forward. With a slam of wind, Nikodemus slowed once again and began to curse loudly. Pushing through further, Nikodemus kept himself upright and prepared for the next push. His vision before him was nothing but sand and darkness. Slight forks of lightning burned through the sky before them, picking out shapes in the storm. Large rocks loomed out of the storm, ominious like tombstones. Growling, Nikodemus cursed their uselessness as shelter. "Rocks ahead. They wont do much for us, but they are markers of the half way point! just abit more." Looking at his internal clock, Nikodemus grumbled as he realized the sun would be setting soon.

Shirien nods his head slowly and says "Halfway, hm?" He sighed softly as they passed the stones, running his dagger along their sides and watching the sparks fly until they were out of reach. It was the little thing that kept his interest in this world. "Well, then what do you think, put our virtual bodies through sleep deprivation... or risk dying in our sleep?" It was a very real threat since they were far away from any safe zones Shirien figured. The only real option in his mind was to take the items and return back before you fell over from exhaustion. "I vote we just tough it out!" He straightens his back a bit to seem like he was acting tough, shielding his eyes still from the lashing winds as he made out a a rarity in these desert filled lands, what appeared to be wood in the distance. "Ooh, could that be...?" He asks while pointing his blade towards the object. He couldn't tell if it was a box or the ruins of a caravan or what, but it certainly wasn't a tree!

"Like the song says, No sleep til Brooklyn right?" Smiling beneath his helmet, Nikodemus kept moving. Seeing Shirien point, Nikodemus squinted into the distance as a bolt of lightning made a white streak through the sky. Gazing at it, Nikodemus shouted in joy. "It's the caravan! The cargo is laying before it!" forcing himself into almost a run against the howling wind, Nikodemus forced himself forward and came to the ruined caravan. Laying about it's torn and ripped canvas were 2 large boxes. Grabbing one, Nikodemus hoisted it on his back and turned it towards the storm. Waiting for Shirien to gather the second one up, Nikodemus opened his HUD and checked the time. Morning would be on them soon, and when it was, Nikodemus prayed they would make quick pace back to Armadillo.

Shirien grinned happily at what Niko confirmed for him, but not before saying "Ooh, that's nice, I prefer 'No sleep for the wicked' personally" He started charging up with the player eagerly and sheathing his dagger as he looked around for any signs of something he could take. Sadly everything seemed to be broken up except the actual quest items. A part of him wondered if the second box spawned simply since he was near. He wasn't about to question it though, not willing to risk getting no credit for not taking the box. He lifts it up with both hands, then props it up on his left shoulder while being supported by the same side's arm. His right hand held his hood in place as usual as he nodded to the heavily armored player. "Were on a time limit, so no time to waste~" Shiriens says while stomping back the way they came. Their footprints were already removed from the storm and he shuddered at the idea of lightning striking him. There wasn't a whole lot higher up than the two of them!

Stalking through the night with a growl in his throat, Nikodemus held his box firm to him. His back now exposed to the howling wind, Nikodemus felt the sand pelt his back. The wind pushed him slightly, but no further damage came from the wind. Feeling the weight of the cargo push down on him a bit he was thankful that he would not be pushed around much by the wind. Being wrapped in thick armor also helped. His icy blue eyes gleamed in the night as lightning struck around them. "Great. More stormy weather. I get struck, I will hunt down Kayaba and put my boot through his chest!" Growling still, Nikodemus stomped through the sandy dunes with a determination to return to Armadillo.

Shirien grinned at the image in his head of the armored player running up to Kayaba and literally shoving his foot through the other man's chest. Giving a thumbs up Shirien let go of his hood since it wasn't about to blow backwards. "Sounds good to me, in fact, if it doesn't quite get all the way through, I'll give you a shove to seal the deal." He offers in good spirits while managing a chuckle before sighing wistfully at the horizon and the darkness that filled the desert. He had nobody but himself to blame since he volunteered, but he was missing out on a lot of sleep. Then again he figured that he could always just make up for it later! He went through such imaginary scenarios to protect his mind from boredom at the least as they tried not to get blown over with their new burdens in hand.

As they trudged for a time, the sun had begun to rise over them. With a grumble, Nikodemus could now see the sun trying to pour weak light through the sand and storm clouds. The wind continued to howl around them, and Nikodemus felt the elemental effect push at him again. Stomping his feet down hard to keep himself steady, Nikodemus balanced the cargo on his back and then continued on with no impedance. Looking around, Nikodemus spotted Shirien trudging along with him, cargo on his shoulder. As the wind roared around them, the wind pelted them across the back, and then storm was not abating.

Shirien smiled softly as they walked, it was easier for him at least with the wind at his back than at his face. If anything the wind was giving him pushes towards his goal rather than to keep him from it like before. "I much prefer walking downwind. Barely have to step at all, just lift your leg and let nature do the rest." He says while keeping his eyes down in case any stray sand decided to whip around or a monster decided to burrow out. He didn't feel in danger but caution was rarely a poor move to make when travelling in the wilderness.

Towering like a giant in the half light of the storm, Nikodemus' icy blue eyes glanced left and right for anything that may present a problem. Nothing had done so yet, and he prayed it wouldn't. Keeping to his rhythmic pace, Nikodemus put one foot before the other and stepped through the sand dunes. "Normally I would say the same, but my armor is nearly half my natural weight, and this box is a third of it.... so I am basically carrying my self almost twice over. If we hit a pit of sinking sand, well.... Let's say I'd be the first person to say whether there is a bottom or not within a matter of seconds." Trudging along in the sand, his boots occasionally dragging small piles along with him, Nikodemus eyed the horizon. He knew it was nearly mid-day due to his HUD, and that they were almost to the safezone. Once they crossed it, the storm would end. With a prayed for swiftness on his lips, Nikodemus continued.
