So, this was Aincrad.  It was definitely above expectations so far, with most things perfectly simulated.  As he stood in the open fields directly outside of the beginner city, Aslatiel could even feel the sunlight warming his face.  This place was truly great.  Apparently there was still all the best parts of rpg's and fighting games, with skills and stats, along with the more peaceful parts of life, like fishing and relaxing.  Anyway, back to the game and how to beat it.  Apparently there was some old dude back in the town that was helping new players learn how to play the game, and Aslatiel wanted to see him.  After all, even an experienced gamer like himself was a bit out of their comfort zone in a place like this.  So, heading back into the town of beginnings, he would begin looking for the old man, trying to find out where his journey would really begin.

Eventually, Aslatiel would wander upon the building in which the old man was residing.  Walking in, he would assess the room and the old man.  The man didn't look threatening, and was in the middle of mixing up some potions and whatnot, while the rest of the room was full of crafting materials and tools to make use of them properly.   Ah, you must be another new adventurer! Would you like some help learning to play the game properly?   The old man sounded kind, and Aslatiel was sure he was halping people out of the kindness of his heart.  Disgusting.   Yes actually, I had heard that you were helping newer players out a bit.  At this the old man smiled. I am! My name is Zackariah, and I have taken it upon myself to help newer players get the hang of the game so they can progress and survive in this world! If you are going to accept my help, the first thing I need is materials, 5 to be exact.  To get these, all you need to do is go get some from the plains and forests outside of town.  Yay, grinding, that basic part of every multiplayer game.  I'll be back with those materials for you soon Zackariah.

Walking out of the building, Aslatiel thought of the old man for a minute.  He was being selfless, losing his chance at becoming a great warrior or adventurer to help others do that very thing.  This was impossible for Aslatiel, giving up his success for others, and it seemed like a generally stupid idea.  What was the point of helping those people if they were just going to run off and never help you, forgetting about the help you provided in their success?  Instead, Aslatiel always preferred to be the one who succeeds in this situation, taking what he can and giving nothing back.  Heh, the pirate code had become what he lives by.  That's a great sign about the kind of person he was becoming.  Anyway, on to the materials.  Zackariah had said to look in the plains and wooded areas around the town, so Aslatiel would start with the fields, and work his way onward as he needed more materials.

Now that he was out here and ready to look around, Aslatiel would begin to just search through the grass and various flowers for some specific plant that would be of use to him for crafting something.  He wasn't actually sure what he was looking for, as in a normal game this would be the part where your character does the digging and pops up with some items.  Now, he had to do the digging.  Most of what he was seeing here was just field grass, but there were some flowers and roots that he could tell were different. While most of these ones were just decoration, he quickly found some that were able to be looted.  Now he just had to try and gather them.  This incurred the possible wrath of chance, and a chance of losing the ingredients.  Hopefully, this would not be the result of his endeavor.

Hm, a few roots that could be used for alchemical purposes.  Not bad for his first time ever searching for materials.  It suddenly came to Aslatiels mind that he could use some materials like this later, and he could possibly get some for crafting weapons if he needed to.  This led to an extended train of thought about himself and future development and what color the taste of an orange would actually be if it could be a color.  These thoughts didn't matter however, as he needed to get back to his mission of collecting more materials.  For now he would simply continue to look for the same plant, but in other spots, trying to find as many of this ingredient as possible before moving on to the wooded areas for more searching.  So, maneuvering carefully to not attract the unwanted attention of any mobs in the area, Aslatiel wandered around the field, digging for roots in the grass.

Aslatiel now had almost half of the required materials, and felt it was time for him to move on to the more wooded areas around the town to search.  Here there were a number of trees that had different plants near them than grass.  These were the best places for him to search for materials like the roots he had been finding.  Over here there were more flower type ingredients and less roots, but it was still basically the same concept.  There were also less boars running around here, making it easier for him to search in peace.  So far, he hadn't found anything that would be useful for his purposes, but he kept searching, and eventually came upon something that was salvageable in the myriad of plantes at the bottom of one of the great trees.  He was going to be coming back here later to get crafting materials for weapons for sure.

Three out of five crafting materials collected, Aslatiel decided it was time to get headed back towards town, and just pick up a couple materials on the way to Zackariah.  He was inevitably sidetracked however, as many things in this world were too new to him for him to just pass them up without a second thought.  One of these was combat.  He had yet to be in a fight and wanted to know how it worked, so he quickly ran forward and got one of the boars that were alone to target him.  It was a child, and had lowere stats than a normal boar, so it would be easier for him to kill than a full sized one.  Based on its health bar compared to another boar's, it had about half of the stats of a normal boar.  The boar was instantly enraged at the sight of Aslatiel, as most mobs tend to be, and charged towards him.  This creature had low enough health to be one shotted when Aslatiel impaled it upon his scimitar. 2 damage for 2 health, no loot.  Combat was simple, as expected when you actually just fight.

Now, back to searching the fields.  This place was kind of boring when all you got to do was dig through plants and dirt all day.  Maybe Aslatiel could spice things up a little bit. Nope, just gonna walk around gathering things for the entire day, possibly a bit of tomorrow, and turn them into the old dude with no excitement whatsoever.  For a video game, this place was boring so far.  All the fighting he had done was against a baby boar, and if he tried fighting anything bigger, he would be beaten with ease.  Being a low-level sucks in MMO's, thats definitely true for all of them.  So, the grind for items that are currently useless to Aslatiel would continue, up until he found a fourth material somewhere between the woods and the Town of Beginnings.  God, grinding was always so boring.  Aslatiel wasn't sure he was even going to make it through his first quest.

Now that he had failed, Aslatiel's entire perspective of the situation changed.  Now, it wasn't boring, easy grinding.  It had become a way for him to be better than other people at something that could be a challenge.  While in reality, it was completely a game of chance, but Aslatiel needed the incentive to do the boring work until he had finished, and he was running low on motivation fuel.  Right now, all he thought about was doing better at gathering than anyone ever had.  Now, with a competitive grin on his face, Aslatiel set off once again, foraging like he had never foraged before, gathering like a madman.  This didn't adjust his chances of retrieving an item at all, but made him feel better about what he was doing here.  Eventually he did find something that could be properly foraged, but whether or not he would get it was undecided until he tried.  Which he did.

Another failure slowed Aslatiels pace a bit.  The first one had motivated him to do better at it, but a second failure, directly after the first, just made him feel sort of bad about it.  Nevertheless, he tried on, digging through grass as he slowly moved back towards the town.  He was hoping to get all five of his materials before he got back, so he wouldn't have to head back out or wait until tomorrow.  If he continued on at this rate, and kept messing up like this, it would be too late to finish today.  So, he dug ferociously for about a minute, then realized that he was foraging, not attacking, and went back to his usual level of digging.  Continuing on like this led to another opportunity to gather some materials from a small bunch of flowers under the grass, one which he would not fail again.

YES! SUCCESS! After two failures in a row, Aslatiel had gotten a material! Now he only had to get one more and he could head back into town to finish up with Zakariah and this damnable quest.  Now, where should he look for the next material?  He had found most of what he had in the fields, so it would probably be best for him to go back into the wooded area to find his last material.  It would do him some good to find out what different materials looked like so he could find them more easily in the future.  As he headed back into the trees and the daylight began to fade, Aslatiel reminded himself to hurry up.  Even as a newb, Aslatiel knew that places like Aincrad were all the more dangerous at night.  If anything, he could get back into town before nightfall and just finish the quest in the morning.  It's not like he was on a timer or anything.

Now that he was actually in the woods, Aslatiel started looking around for anything that looked like a material.  This made it take longer, because almost everything looked like it could be used for something, most likely because it could, and it was already getting dark, making it more difficult to see.  After a while, Aslatiel started getting worried a mob might sneak up on him and one shot him or something.  This was a fear he hadn't felt in a long time, not since he had first started his little "side jobs" for the less savory members of society.  Back then he was weak, but then he got stronger, and eventually didn't feel any fear.  This fear wouldn't stop him of course, or even inhibit him due to his dangerous levels of bravery, but it was annoying.  Very annoying.  Suddenly, he saw something glowing red about ten feet to his front-left.  Instinctively, his hand reached for his sword, and he readied for a fight.

As Aslatiel and the mysterious glow sat there, time continued to pass.  It was a full five minutes of stillness before Aslatiel was willing to risk the approach, carefully edging forward with his hand still on his sword.  As he approached, he rotated around to what he perceived as the back of the glow, and realized what he was facing.  This glow wasn't an enemy, or another player, or anything that could hurt him.  Probably.  It was actually just a flower, one that just so happens to glow in a way that mimics an enemies eyes.  This was most likely a defense mechanism of some sort, but Aslatiel wasn't interested in herbology right now, he was interested in getting his last material.  Approaching the flower slowly, wary of poison clouds or acid spit and every other crazy possibility, he began trying to gather it properly, without damaging any important parts.

As Aslatiel reached for the flower, he tripped over a root hidden on the ground directly in front of him.  This in turn caused him to hit his face on the tree near the flower, and simultaneously tear the flower in half as his hand swiped through it. In doing so, he permanently broke the flower and it's material was lost.  Now he had to go find something else to loot.  Wandering slightly deeper into the trees, Aslatiel eventually found a bright red vine wrapped around the base of a tree.  Apparently, this could also be gathered as a material, and this is exactly what Aslatiel intended to do as he wrapped his hands around the end and drew his sword.  He would then carefully cut off the end, trying his best to not spill any of its juices on his hands or body.  In the end though, it was up to luck.

As he spilled the juices of the vine all over his left hand, Aslatiel realized what a problem this would be.  As it covered his hand, it began to dry like glue, sticking his fingers together and sticking his hand to anything it touched.  Due to this, he kept it from touching anything, for fear of having to wait out here until someone came to his rescue.  Now he was going to have to try and gather his last material one handed, and before it became too dark for him to find his way back.  Normally, he would have headed back already and played it safe, but he had put too much effort into this to just come back tomorrow, especially for only one material.  Now, where was his next target?  How about that random colored dangerous looking plant?  Yes, that one, the great big purple flower that is still furled up like a bud, that looks like it could eat his hand.  Running at the plant, Aslatiel would swing his sword at the base, attempting to get it dead and gathered before it had any chance to explode or anything like that.

Luckily the giant bud flower didn't explode when it was chopped down, but it was unfortunately destroyed completely and its materials were rendered just as useless as the flower before it.  This led to Aslatiel treading through the dark woods, in the general direction of town, looking for one last material.  On his way, he saw a few things that had potential to be gathered easily, and attempted to gather each of them.  This led to him using about 10 minutes picking up tiny plants and different colored plants and more and more annoying plants.  Aslatiel didn't want to see any more plants, touch any more plants, or even think about any of these annoying plants.  As he walked through the field that stood between the woods and the town, he continued grabbing little tidbits off of the ground, all the way to Zakariah's house.  Upon his arrival, he would check through all of the things he had gathered, checking to see if he had actually gotten anything that could be used.

Sitting down outside of Zakariah's house, Aslatiel counted up everything he had gathered thus far.  He had just enough materials, and it had taken him all day to get them.  So, he headed into the building with a wave of his hand, looking to Zackariah for instructions on the next part of his quest.   Ah, the young adventurer has returned.  You know what to do with those materials, right? No? Well then I'll just have to show you. With a smile, the old man moved over to where his equipment sat on a table, and began messing around with this and that, doing a number of things Aslatiel didn't understand, and after about a minute of this, turned around with a potion.   That's basically all that there is to it, but if you have any issues, I'll be here to help.  As the old man backed up from the table, Aslatiel moved in, assessing the equipment and seeing how each item could be used.  This was going to take a bit of getting used to.

Now, on to the mixing and matching of materials by a completely inexperienced newb.  This was the exact thought that ran through Aslatiels mind as he began moving around the small number of bottles and eventually started working with the materials he had gathered from the forest and the fields.  So far, he thought he was doing pretty good, although he hadn't started really doing anything that does things.   Do you need any help? The old man was trying to be nice and help Aslatiel, but he would have none of it. I would prefer to figure it out myself, simply to get better at it. Thank you for the offer though. With a little bit more messing around, Aslatiel did a thing that he didn't quite understand, and he thought he was close to making a potion, but he was still unsure, and continued messing with things until he got it right.

As his potion was completed, he handed it over to Zakariah for appraisal.  After examining the potion for a moment, the old man spoke. This is useless. With that, he emptied out the bottle, gave Aslatiel some more materials, and once again offered his help.  This time was different than the last time, in that Aslatiel accepted. Just a few pointers here and there would probably be good. The old man laughed, having seen a number of new players try to make the potion on their own and fail, and nodded.  Continuing on with only a small amount of help from Zakariah, Aslatiel worked the station to the extent of his knowledge.  After another hour of work, he had made a bottle of something, but he was unsure of whether or not he had been successful this time, and once again needed the examination of Zakariah.  The old man examined it for a moment, and then he spoke.

This one is also useless. Aslatiel groaned loudly and took the new materials the old man handed him, moving back to his crafting station to get to work on his next attempt at a potion.  Zackariah continued offering little tips here and there, but not so much that he would sound annoying.  Aslatiel was beginning to get very angry with the set of equipment, but he kept himself calm, and continued to work on his next potion.  This one looked much better than the last two, and was even a different color, but it was still possible for it to be just another dud.  Examining it himself before handing it to the old man, Aslatiel was pretty sure it looked like a proper potion.  When it was the old man's turn to examine it, he simply looked at the bottle, and told Aslatiel what he had found, and whether this had been a successful potion.
