[PP-NK-F11] Lost in the Labyrinth

Recommended Posts

The fuzzy feeling that had clouded Teion's thoughts was finally starting to dissipate, and the blacksmith gave a small shake of her head. A nearby voice caught her attention, prompting the woman to look over and spot Beat looking exactly as she felt--disoriented and a bit confused. Teion gave a small nod before looking out at the path before them. "Still in a maze, but we're definitely on a different floor now." She wasn't going to show her unease, but she certainly felt a knot forming in her stomach. "I wonder if this was a lucky find, or a trap." She tacked on in a mutter.

It wasn't long before the other two members of their party appeared, and again Teion wasn't sure if she should feel relief from their presence or anxiety with the thought that they could all be in over their heads. Teion reached behind her to grab the handle of her axe and hold the weapon in front of her. She'd never been on the eleventh floor herself, so she had no reference to gauge the strength of any monsters they would encounter here.

Consuming Captain's Logger (+6 dmg/-3Eva) [ID#78217]

Beat’s eyes quickly adjusted to the new level of illumination in what appeared to be a dungeon. He had never heard of a trap that actually moved someone to another floor, but he thought it was a dirty trick to place such a trap inside a secret room. His eyes fell to the purple haired woman he had followed through the trap. It was clear that she was a little shaken, but Beat and Shield lived on the floor they were on now, so his nerves remained steady.

“Hey, don’t worry about it. Shield and me live on this floor, so we’ll be fine.” He said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder and giving a small squeeze of assurance before letting go and looking around the room. His loot-finding ring began to grow warm as it detected ore in one of the stones stuck in the wall of the corridor. Beat quickly removed it and stashed it away before looking at Teion again.

“Plus, we’re bound to find some good loot here. No doubt about it.”

If this was the level of dungeon it appeared to be, Beat knew that he would need every advantage. He pulled out some of his strongest alcohol and chugged away, wincing at the potency.

Soredell watched as Beat and Teion had suddenly disappeared, running right after them. "Come on @Shield!" he calls out to him as he runs to where they were last before he himself disappears in a flash of light, appearing before Beat and Teion. "What the hell? What happened? Where are we?" he asks the two. Surveying the area, it looks very different from where they were before. He soon finds out that this is floor 11. Probably the highest floor he's gone adventuring on. As such, he doesn't know how strong the monsters on these floors are, and how much damage they can do to Soredell, and that terrifies him. He takes a shaky breath, surveying his surroundings, noticeable by everyone present. While looking around, he locates a material tucked away behind some fallen rubble. The material he does find is a T2, the first that he's seen. Much like all the other materials he finds, he sends it straight to his inventory.

Shield stepped through shortly after Soredell, unsure of what would greet him on the other side, but unwilling to let the others face whatever it was without protection. There was something vaguely familiar about the halls of the new dungeon they found themselves in. It wasn't until they heard the faint, distant rumbling and the more immediate tromping of feet that he managed to connect the dots. Just then, the tromping turned the corner, and four army ants, complete with spears and green helmets, marched towards them.

"Oh for crying out- Beat, wanna take a guess where we are?" he said, only resisting the compulsion to sigh by inhaling to prepare for his howl. "We just cannot get rid of you pests, can we!?"

The ants all lowered their spears and charged. Hurrying to the front, he pushed his way through his party members to meet their attacks, the spear tips plunging deep into his body.

Teion look over to Beat as she felt his hand resting on her shoulder. A small smirk found its way to her expression, and she gave the dark-haired fighter a nod. "Mm, sounds good." The words had just left her when Soredell appeared without warning behind them, looking just as disoriented as she had felt half a minute ago. A fourth and final light flashed beside them, bringing Shield with it. Only seconds after he had joined them, Teion's attention snapped forward with the foreboding sound of quickly-marching footsteps. Their tank wasted no time placing himself in between the party and the oncoming threats. Teion's eyes narrowed in a mixture of battle readiness and confusion--the enemies standing before them were odd, to say the least.

The woman tried to take advantage of the oppotunity Shield had created for them. Gripping her axe tightly, she dashed to the side of the path and brought her blade down the side to sweep at the soldiers as she ran past. The two on the side closest to her, however, reacted more quickly than she would have guessed. In unison, they pulled back their spears and held them up vertically as if to brace themselves against her strike. Teion expected her axe to slice cleanly through the weapons as she passed, but her eyes widened in surprise as they looped under the curve of her blade with one clean motion. Despite her momentum, the creatures and their spears didn't budge, causing Teion to be jerked back as her axe was now caught on the shaft of the monsters' own weapons. She couldn't help letting out a small cry as the action caused her to lose her balance and the middle of her back soon met the ground.

Beat retrieved a red, pyramid shaped crystal from his inventory and eyed it before grinning at the familiar soldiers of the eleventh floor. He was quickly regretting chugging his drink as quickly as he had, his mind becoming fuzzy far more quickly than he had been ready for. The image of the ant soldiers faded in and out, doubling and even tripling periodically. Beat strained his mind as he would a muscle to somehow force himself to regain focus.

"Damn...that [censored] is strong...never actually tested it...bad idea..." He said stumbling into a wall and nearly dropping the enhancement crystal in his hand.

Come on...pull yourself together!

With some self encouragement and intense concentration, Beat restored some of his ability to walk upright, taking off towards the ants at a charge, not wanting to waste his window of clarity. He crushed the crystal in his hand as the shards burst and flowed into his body, filling him with raw power.

"YAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"

Beat released his battle cry as he spun wildly in between the group of enemies, whipping up a fierce twister that wobbled as much as Beat's equilibrium was, but still managed to avoid harming his allies. The twister created strong wind shear as it shredded their enemies, punishing them for thinking they could get away with their assault. Meanwhile, the drunken Beat fell straight to the ground at Shield's feet.

"Ow...the ground is hard...hehehe"

Before Soredell has any time to think on their situation, four large insectoid mobs approach them, looking very much like ants, wielding green army helmets and spears. If these things weren't strong enough to actually pierce Shield's mitigation, which he as almost never seen happen before, he would of thought that these things were really stupid ideas for mobs.

Soredell is more shocked than anything about the whole 'being strong enough to pierce their tank's mitigation', "Oh jeez, Shield! You ok?" he yells over the chaos. If Shield being attacked did anything, it did create an opening for the party to attack.

Not sparing a single moment, Soredell rushes forward towards the ants, hoping to take advantage of this opening. He watches as Teion and Beat make their own attacks, before he makes his own. Activating his new sword skill Gen Getsu, he slashes at the first ant, but it sees the attack coming after previous attacks, and simply moves out of the way. "Dammit..." he mutters before jumping back to the rest of the party.

No sooner had the previous damage been dealt than Shield had already bounced back to his full gauge. He turned his head and shouted over his shoulder to Soredell.

"Don't worry about me," he said. "Even at their worst, these guys don't do enough to put me in danger."

Taking advantage of the openings that the other players had made for him, he slipped past the ant vanguard and took up as much of the hall behind them as he could, boxing them in. With a step to power his attack, he plunged the blade of his axe into the neck of the nearest soldier, sending a familiar cascade of bloody pixels in all directions. While minuscule in its initial damage, the victim's health gauge began to slowly deplete immediately after taking the hit.

The ants, not taking kindly to being confined, turned around and unleashed a counter assault, lancing into Shield's body with their spear heads, but fort all of their efforts, they only brought his health down about as far as they had before.

"Never get into a game of numbers with a statistician, unless you want to be on the losing side of it!" he taunted them, knowing very well that this was hardly an intimidating notion. That is, until you find yourself already on the losing side of an inescapable situation.

Teion scowled as she pushed herself up to her knees, yanking back on the handle of her axe to free the weapon and bring it back in front of her. The woman got to her feet as the rest of the party repositioned themselves and got their own attacks (or attempts) in. Teion cocked an eyebrow at the martial artist, now on the ground in somewhat of a daze after he had managed to deal quite a bit of damage to all of their targets. She had half a mind to make a comment, but held her tongue as she instead focused on her own actions. The katana-wielder has as much luck getting a hit in on the soldiers as she had, and as Teion's turn to attack had come back around the blacksmith took a moment to steady herself. Shield had moved around the creatures to surround them, and after they took another opportunity to strike at the brunette they had left themselves wide open. The edge of Teion's blade glowed a sky blue as she activated Ordinal Cleave. She only had to take a few paces to close the gap between herself and the mobs; once she was within range, the woman unleashed several strikes one after another at the soldiers' backs, leaving a long red gash for each swing of her blade.

Beat had always felt his loss of coordination after consuming alcohol before, but for some reason, his most recent concoction was hitting him much harder than he had anticipated. Every time he thought he was standing him, his body was actually oriented oddly and he ended up stumbling over to the side again. His frustration was the only thing keeping him from feeling embarrassed by the sudden loss of faculties.

guh...what a draw back for all that power! It's never hit me this hard before!

Beat grit his teeth and slowly stood up as the floor beneath him seemed to shake and spin. One thing was becoming clear to him as he finally wobbled onto his feet, his head still spinning, causing his eyes to roll into the back of his head as he struggled to cope with the unfamiliar loss of control he was experiencing.

I've had alcohol this strong before! Did I go too fast?

For a moment, Soredell drops his guard, looking at Shield as he faces him. "You know, if I didn't know you any better, I would think you're teasing me right now." he says in a joking tone, crossing his arms. He looks over to Beat as he stumbles to the ground, obviously drunk. "Jesus. What the hell did you drink man?" he comments, before moving in towards the ants to make his own attack against them.

He moves in, katana drawn and charges at the ants. He takes one swing at the first ant, but it easily steps out of the way of the attack, Soredell missing once again."Dammit!" he says, getting angrier at his second failed attack. He grits his teeth in frustration as he leaps back once again, getting himself to a safe distance from the ants so they couldn't make an attack against him. "Second attack missed. This isn't going well for me." he mutters to himself as he readies himself for whats next.

There had been a run of bad luck on the most recent set of attacks, but Shield knew Beat at least was capable of pulling himself up by his bootstraps, even while under the effects of his own concoctions. Whether he managed to do so without embarrassing himself was another matter. With the hate on the battlefield low, Shield was free to attack, rushing in and catching the nearest and healthiest ant with his axe. The attack did little more damage than any of his companions' misses. However, as the ants retaliated, Shiels watched with satisfaction as their health bars continued to drop as he absorbed their blows.

"Shake it off, everyone," he called out, not drawing attention to specific actions, but still encouraging the team to let go and focus on what was happening around them then rather than past misses. "They're already on their last legs. We've got this!"

Teion was beginning to switch to auto-pilot as the blade of her axe gave off an identical sky blue glow. Shield continued to hold the ant soldiers on the other side of the corridor, allowing her to put damage on them to her heart's content. Her AoE attacks did a fair amount, but it still took a few rotations for their party to get their health bars in the red. The blacksmith dashed forward to release her sword art, Cardinal having her slice through the air several times in succession to leave another set of red gashes along all of the soldiers' backs.

Hopping backwards, she gave sideways glances to each of the DPS players on either side of her. Soredell seemed to have been having bad luck landing a hit, and she wondered for a moment if these monsters were too high-level for him to properly fight. They did jump quite a few floors, after all. Meanwhile, Beat was struggling to recover from some kind of after-effects of an item he used, or so it seemed.

Beat took a few moments to force himself to relax and get ahold of his bearings. He slowed his breathing and was tempted to close his eyes, but he knew better from experience that doing so would end up making the dizziness worse.

Slow everything down…

He focused on his mental exercise, taking his mind state all of the way back to the training his did to be able to fight effectively while intoxicated. It had been an arduous process and one Beat did not look back fondly on, but it had paid off by allowing him to reap the benefits of the alcoholic consumables he had become masterful at creating. He brought himself out of his mental trance, the spinning of the room much more manageable and his targets looking low on health thanks to Teion’s consistent efforts.

“Sorry for the wait folks! We will now return you to your regularly scheduled beat down!” Beat yelled as he leaped high into the air, whipping his leg across his body and releasing a long wave of pure energy that flew towards the soldier ants like a tomahawk missile, with an explosion to match upon impact.

With the ant’s destroyed, Beat read the loot screen, somewhat underwhelmed, “Alright, I think I’ve got something for this. Give me a sec and I’ll make our next fight a little more profitable.” He began flipping through his inventory, looking for one of the items he had made for just such a purpose.

Soredell watched on as Beat finally got a hold of himself and eliminated the soldier ants. With a grunt, Soredell sheathes his sword and relaxes himself. "'Bout time you got back into it Beat." he says in a joking manner. "Maybe ease up on the grog* next time we get into a fight man, you're one of our DPS, and we need to take out these mobs as soon as possible so we can continue on, and finish this dungeon." he says, only realizing a short time later of the Australian term that he used, and he doubted that the others knew. He shrugged to himself before continuing.

Soredell glances down at his ring, hoping for any sort of indication that there were materials nearby that he could pick up. Unfortunately for him there were no materials to be found. He bit his lip in mild frustration before turning to the group. "Hopefully that fight was at least SOMEWHAT profitable, and we got something good out of that." he says.

With one raiding party take care of, and everyone's energy either at or well above half, Shield recognized that a rest wouldn't accomplish a whole lot just yet. He gave a nod and motioned for the others to follow.

"There's a lot of dungeon left ahead of us," he said to the others in a low, growling voice. "Let's try to knock out at least one more group before we take a rest."

Like the other ant mounds they had explored on this floor, the tunnel twisted and turned, sometimes turning downward at angles that made walking next to impossible. On more than one occasion, they had to drop straight down to the next set of tunnels.

If we're going to get out of here, it's going to have to be through the actual exit. Dungeons like this are designed to not allow back-tracking.

As they rounded the next bend, Shield found himself in the middle of a large, cavernous chamber, filled with thousands of eggs that were easily the size of their skulls. Before he even had time to question whether the eggs were purely aesthetic or not, there came a rumbling and hundreds of tiny ants burst from the piles, swarming into masses of black, shining malice.

Filling his lungs, Shield bellowed out a challenge that invoked their wrath, and with countless snapping mandibles, they descended upon him. With each snap, a tiny ant burst into pixels, leaving dozens of siblings behind to exact vengeance.

"We're going to have to wear down the swarms!"

Teion followed behind Shield, axe at the ready while they walked through the labyrinth. Some of the twists and turns they encountered might have been easier to traverse with her hands free to brace herself against a wall here and there, but the woman simply did her best to keep steady and keep up with the other players. Couple with her first time on the eleventh floor, Teion realized she had never been in a proper dungeon before. She kept her discomfort to herself, thankful that she wasn't claustraphobic as the party made their way through some of the more narrow passages.

An unsettling amount of time had passed since their last encounter with the ant soldiers. Just as Teion had half a mind to comment on the oddity, she stopped short as her brain perceived the halted tank in front of them. The blacksmith didn't even have time to tilt her head to the side in confusion or lean to the side to peer past the brunette. Before she knew it, several swarms of ants had skittered towards them, preparing to attack. While Shield managed to react quickly and draw their attention, Teion dashed to the side and brought her axe down with an impromptu strike. The curved blade crashed into the ground, sinking a good inch or two into the earth. She had missed the insects, giving a quick glance to the health bar hovering in the air to confirm she had dealt no damage. As her cobalt eyes flickered back to her weapon, Teion's eyes widened in surprise at the sight of the ants swarming around her blade and beginning to crawl their way up onto the steel. The blacksmith quickly wrenched her axe from the ground, practically feeling a chill run up her spine.

Beat had nearly retrieved the cup of coffee he was looking forward to drinking as they incurred the wrath of the hungry, or angry, ant hatchlings. He winced as they formed a larger, more formidable mass of ants, showing surprising ingenuity for having just been born.

"Blech! Now I need my coffee...or something. Ugh, bugs are so gross." He said, expressing his lack of concern over who knew about his distaste for insects. He didn't fear them, but he couldn't deny the queasy feeling he got every time he was near them. The odd thing was that the gigantic ones were almost more tolerable to him.

With a running start and grit teeth, Beat charged towards the mass of hatchling ants and cleaved through the masses of insects with his feet, knocking away a decent chunk of the group with each strike.

"Alright, let's end this quick before I lose my nerve."

Soredell follows Shield's lead and goes with him and the rest of the party though the dungeon. He spends little to no time admiring the sights around him, looking out for anything of note; mobs, loot, other players etc. Thankfully, nothing too major pops out of nowhere during the trip. Eventually, the group makes it to another major cavern, an all too familiar sight.

Before Soredell has time to react, he sees a massive swarm of tiny ants taking the shape of four large ants advancing towards them. His eyes widen with horror as he sees each tiny ant that makes up the large figure moving around the body, manipulating it's 'body pats'. His blood seems to drain as it advances, breath quickening at the sight of such a mob. He remembered seeing a video what now seems to be an eternity ago of someone killing a spider, only for millions of tiny spiderlings to spread out, almost like a horrifying wave. Needless to say, and considering his arachnophobia, he was scared s***less. This fight was doing nothing more than bringing back that awful memory, to the point where Soredell almost runs away. 'Dammit! Pull yourself together!' he mentally chides himself, steeling his nerves before charging with a ferocious shout.

Soredell runs out to the swarm head on, in an effort to not remember the video, and with a yell, slices right through the first swarm. Many of the tiny ants die in tiny explosions of blue, the remaining ones turning red as he is greeted by the appearance of the bleed effect his weapon gives. He jumps back before any tiny spiders have a chance to jump on him, or the swarm attacks him.

With each cut of strike, more and more of the little creatures fell away, disappearing into masses of pixels as the numbers gradually thinned. The first mass was beginning to wane in number more so than the others as its health bar dipped into the yellow, which meant it was time to work on thinning out the other masses a little. He rushed forward, homing in on the second swarm, the health meter of which was still over half full.

With precision unbecoming of a meat shield, he hacked through the center of the mass. nicking dozens of the creatures who, one by one, began to bleed out into nothing.

"Those who don't have AoE, focus on whichever swarm is strongest at the moment," he called out as a reminder. "It's the AoE's that are going to finish them off, so bringing them down collectively nearer to the kill range makes better use of our energy stores."
