[F1-SP] Stretching my legs, and my sword arm (COMPLETE!)

Recommended Posts

Gryas was restless, it has been a few days since he went out and tested his combat techniques. He thought about sending out a private message to his friend and new acquaintances that he had made so far on the first floor but felt as if he had been relying on them too much lately and he needed to prove to himself that he could do this on his own. If he couldn't protect himself he couldn't protect others.

He checked his inventory one last time before heading out. Gryas had visited a few blacksmiths over the last few days and was lucky enough to get some upgrades to his equipment, a one handed assault spear and some better armour. It made him feel a little more confident to venture out on his own, so did the 5 HP potions he had received from that first quest he and Zanne had completed. Well, Time to head out. He made his way out of the cramped little room he had at the Inn, down the stairs and out the front door making his way to the Northern Gate. He had a habit of waking early, an hour before dawn usually just so he could avoid the crowds in the streets. It wasn't long before he was out in the open walking over the grassy hillsides towards the outskirts of the forest. The trees would give him some privacy so he could train in piece.

He decided to look around as he crossed the hills, seeing if he could spot anything useful to pick up along the way. As he had thought, this area had been picked clean. It was a common hunting ground for low level players because of its relatively easy mobs and the safety that the Town of Beginnings provided being so close to the North Gate and to help if needed.

It only took about 45 minutes to reach the edge of the forest. He took out his spear and rested it on his shoulder as he moved through the trees deeper into the forest. He was not hunting the easy boars of the hillside today, this time he was hunting wolves. It sounded like his movements through the trees had already gotten somethings attention. He heard a wolfs howl off in the distance and before he knew it Gryas took off, heading in that direction. If the wolf was howling he figured it was not with the rest of his pack and this was as good a time as any to find it and defeat it before the others had a chance to group.

And then he saw it. A lone wolf crouched in the brush a short distance away. Gryas did not stop, bracing his spear he charged it and appeared to take it by surprise as he drove the tip of his spear into the wolfs shoulder. It seemed that he hit a nerve as the wolf just crouched there, paralyzed. Gryas smiled.. This spear was worth the effort he went through and was already proving to be as deadly as he promised. Moving past the wolf and turning, ready to attack again he crouched, ready to lunge once more.

His first attack went well, and with confidence Gryas charged forward again. He began to loose his balance in the underbrush, running over tree roots and rocks hidden beneath the leaves. Gryas did all he could to remain on his feet as he crashed through the brush past the wolf. Thankfully it seems that the paralysis was strong enough to pin the wolf in place and it wasn't able to take advantage of Gryas being thrown off balance. He quickly scanned the area. Thankfully there was still no sight of any other wolves and Gryas was able to continue focusing all his attention on his target, and he began moving past several trees in an attempt to gain a better position against the wolf once it began moving again. He began to think that he really needed to get himself some skills in a weapon. Sword Arts would make this fight far easier.

The wolf leapt forward and attacked. Gryas was ready for though. Enough to avoid it at any rate, he overstepped his dodge however and put himself at too much range to be able to strike the wolf as it passed him. He would need to react faster next time if he intended to end this fight quickly. Gryas was still not worried however, he felt like he was just beginning to fall into a comfortable stride, a back and forth between two deadly combatants. He still hadn't been hit yet but he wouldn't let that get him overconfident. He needed to focus more on offence as apposed to defence, but it felt like a waste to spend points on weapon skills considering he planned to tank efficiently. But that was the problem with a tank trying to solo hunt... It seemed safe, but took a long time to get anything done.

Gryas saw the wolf crouch low ready to attack and he prepared himself. The wolf lunged forward and Gryas turned just enough to deflect some of its blow as he thrust forward himself scoring another hit on the wolf, leaving a gash down its side. The wolf began to run and Gryas tailed it, keeping it close and ready to attack again as they sprinted together through the trees. There was a feeling of freedom that he felt as he did battle with the wolf. The Town of Beginnings was safe but it was also confining. having the freedom to move around like this, nothing restricting him as he charged through the brush and even the slight thrill of the fact that out here he was no longer safe, he had to fight to survive out here and only had his own skills to rely upon. The wolf began to dart around the trees ahead of him and Gryas momentarily lost sight of his prey.

Gryas slowed cautiously as he scanned the trees looking for where the wolf had hid. He heard a rustle from behind and turned just in time to see the wolf explode from the brush and lunge towards him. Gryas braced as he moved to the side but knew he could not move fast enough to avoid the attack completely so instead he did something a little reckless. He let the wolf bite him but as he did he turned the spear and swung out to the side and over the top slashing the wolf across the back. His health bar went down but he had also been regenerating health at the same time so the wolf barely god any damage through. At the same time though he did hardly any damage so this would be a slow fight indeed, he would have to get lucky with some crits if he wanted to speed things up.

It was reassuring to see how little damage this thing did to him, but this battle was taking too long. Gryas went in for another attack and was rewarded with a vicious hit on the leg. He decided that he had to end this battle. He had to get away from it and re coup his energy and health. He was expecting some upgrades and felt foolish that he didn't wait for them to arrive before heading out to find some mats. He parried another attack and tried to strike the wold but it was too quick. Letting it circle him Gryas began getting ready to try and disengage toe wolf and move on to searching around for some useful mats.

The wolf then lunged forward, catching Gryas off guard and dinning teeth into his waist. He wasn't in dire danger, the thing did almost no damage to him. But unfortunately neither did he.

Gryas knew this was taking too long, he had to end the fight so decided to begin disengaging the wolf. It however was hot on his tail, taking a bite and doing a small amount of damage. He felt a bit foolish having come out so early and not waiting around till he received his new gear. Well it was more of a mixture of foolish and cocky, feeling fairly undefeatable in these lower level areas of the first floor. He just didn't consider how low damage he was able to do so getting into a fight like this was just a waste of time. He continued to make distance from the wolf but it was still hot on his heels. He would make a break for it soon, he just needed to distract the wolf long enough to find a way to break line of sight and loose the agro.

Gryas was moving through the trees heading back toward the plains in front of the Town of Beginnings and then he saw his change. It seemed that the wolf had begun to hit its 'leash point' or so Gryas had begun to think of it as. The point where the wolf so long as it was not agro'd again would stop its chase. Loosing the monster completely Gryas promised quietly that he would return to teach it a lesson once he grabbed his new gear.

Running across the fields back to the Town of Beginnings was quite peaceful, and it didn't take him long to arrive at the blacksmith, conduct the transaction with Macradon and then leave while equipping his new armour and shield. Gryas made his way back out towards the forest ready for round 2 against the wolf. He began to think that he was grateful that he had left so early in the day as he still had plenty of time before it even hit noon. Gryas planned to get a lot done today and this equipment would ensure that he got it done quickly, especially for his level. He would have to thank again the players that had lent him the Col to buy the gear and intended to earn enough of it today to repay them.

Ok, lets that this up a notch! Gryas said confidently to himself after he had finished crossing the plains and as he entered the forest with his new gear that he had now properly equipped and gotten the hang of. Moving through the plains gave him the opportunity to stretch out and get the feel for his new armour. He had never used a shield either but hoped that the basic skill system of the game would be able to allow him to easily get the feel for how to use it and ensure that he could use it to stave off any danger. He was not worried about the mobs of this part of the forest anymore, knowing that the armour he had purchased virtually made him immune to all attacks that these monsters could do to him. And thankfully the thorns that he had gotten his shield enhanced with would hopefully make short work of the monsters as well as he would be able to deflect more damage back to his attackers then they would be able to dish out. Gryas walked into the shadows created by the canopy of the forest and bellowed out a challenge. "Come and get me!"

Gryas's challenge must have been heard as in response a bestial challenge came forth from the trees. Gryas rushed in towards the noise and was greeted by a sight that perhaps was a bit too much for him. Grays saw 4 wolves prowling in the underbrush, they must have heard his taunt and came to investigate what had made the noise. Gryas decided to act first and he charged through the trees with his spear. He tried to attack one but it moved faster then he could manage as it was already crouching ready to attack. The wolves spread out and surrounded him, lunging in for a quick attack and then backing away. Gryas used his shield far more naturally then he had imagined he would, able to parry and block all the attacks with ease. The spear however felt kind of unnatural with the shield. He wasn't able to get any attacks in with its awkward length and wished that he had equipped his one handed straight sword instead. He decided to wait for an opening in their attacks to quickly change weapons.

Gryas was able to deflect a wolves attack and saw an opening, they had backed off slightly so he took the opportunity to open his inventory and select his basic one handed straight sword to equip instead of the spear. The spear was an amazing weapon but Gryas didn't feel like it was a suitable weapon for what he was trying to do now. He managed to change equipment just in time for another wave of attacks coming in from all directions. He was able to block them all as they lunged at Gryas all at the same time. He thought to himself that this was a little silly, he wanted them to hit him but he couldn't just naturally stand by and let the wolves land their attacks. It was like his natural instincts kicked in every time and made him move to defend himself. A thought just popped into his head however... What if they all managed to land critical strikes at the same time? That realization made Gryas take this battle more seriously because he realized that he was in more danger then he had originally believed.

Almost as if on queue Gryas was struck from the side hard. One of the wolves managed to get in his blind spot and attacked him with enough force to knock him of balance. As he was regaining his footing three more attacks came in one after the other. The beating he took was devastating, if it wasn't for his armour he was sure that these monsters would have almost killed him in one hit. Each one that struck him made his HP bar drop a fraction. He had lost about 1/6 of his health from the one attack and regrettably the thorns in his shield didn't activate. He remembered something that he was told while purchasing the armour, the thorns only work on a regular hit, if your opponent lands a crit they don't activate. This made Gryas realize once again the danger of the situation that he had put himself in. If they managed to keep landing critical hits on him not even the armour could keep him alive!

Gryas began to move through the wolves and slashed at one of them, cutting a small gash across its side. The fight was not really going as planned, and just when he thought he was beginning to understand their movements the wolves began to act differently. They appeared to be using tactics and attacked as one, all hitting Gryas in quick succession. Gryas smiled, so the Rat was telling the truth after all... Looks like Gryas will have to keep coming back to that particular informant. The wolves all struck as one, and Gryas ducked down low and took the blow allowing himself to get hit, instead of working on defense he turned all of his attention to offence. Raising his shield however and not his sword Gryas swept the shield out in a great wave and knocked every one of the wolves back with such force that Gryas was worried that they would turn and run. Luckily they did not, instead they begun circling him ready for another attack. This made Gryas smile once more. "You want to kill me so bad wolves? Well come and get it!" Gryas yelled out a challenge and then the wolves broke into motion.

Gryas watched as the wolves scattered around him, circling from a larger area now, darting in and out none of them managed to get through his natural defences as he parried with shield and blade alike. They were moving too quick around him to land any hits though, swinging at one that managed to duck under his attack and then trying to stab another that jumped out of the way just at the last moment. He guessed it didn't really matter if he hit them or not, he wasn't able to do any meaningful damage to them with his weapon as he had witnessed first hand earlier this morning.
As Gryas darted in and out of brief exchanges with wolves it felt natural, at first he thought that it must be the games programming that had taken over but no, Gryas was not activating any abilities, all his movements were his own. Looks like he was getting the hang of this after all.

Gryas moved in to attack one of the boars and in the brush his foot got caught under a tree root sending him flying through the air. He crashed into the ground and rolled but luckily he didn't take any damage from the fall. That of course was the only thing he didn't take damage from. As a pack all 4 wolves lunged forward and began mauling him on the ground, his health bar dropped and it was in the orange, getting closer to half health. This was getting a bit dangerous! Gryas pushed the wolves off and looked around at the wolves now circling him in a tight formation. Their health bars though were almost fully exhausted, to the point that he could probably finish them off himself with a strike of his sword. Gryas could finish this fight swiftly so long as they didn't get too much more damage into him to worry him.

Gryas saw another opening and attacked one of the wolves that he had already hit. His sword cut right through it and it exploded in a shattering of crystalized light. Stunned by his first kill and how exhilarating it was he left himself open completely to attack as the 3 remaining wolves lunged at him from all sides. He was knocked to the ground and rolled but wasn't able to regain his footing. Through his tumble however he saw that the 3 wolves that just hit him explode in the same kind of light that the first had, his thorns armour had don't the trick and finished them off!
A pop up appeared in front of Gryas as he lay on the floor catching his breath.

CONGRATULATIONS!

WOW! Gryas thought, that was definitely worth the effort! He definitely needed to catch his breath before he could manage that again though, and regen a little bit of HP.

Gryas just lay there in the grass for a few moments catching his breath. His HP was slowly regenerating but was not quite back in the green just yet. While he lay there he looked at his inventory and examined the two Rare Weapons he had found. After inspecting them they appeared in his inventory as an Unidentified Rare Two-Handed Assault Spear, and a Unidentified One-Handed Battle Axe. Nice! He wasn't able to equip them though, looking through is guide book he found out that he had to get them Identified at a merchant to see what they were. Then looking at the consumable he received he found out that he just couldn't look at what it was at all! Once again he needed to take this to a merchant. Well he figured that he would eventually return to town and hopefully have enough gear, mats and Col to make it a worth while trip.

Gryas was taken out of his momentary pause by the rush of paws through the underbrush and the howl of a wolf, followed by several others. He only just managed to get to his feet before he was once again set upon on all sides by 4 more wolves. They hit him HARD, sending him reeling once again but luckily he held his footing this time. His health went down a huge chunk from that attack, and he began to curse because his HP hadn't regenerated enough yet to be comfortable fighting more wolves. He considered running, but thought better of it. He managed to kill the last group before they dropped him below half.. Hopefully he could do the same here and make it through this combat, and if it became dire he still had several health potions from a quest that he had completed earlier in the week that he could use. He could do this, he did it before and he will do it again.

This time when the wolves charged in Gryas was ready, he crouched low and swung at the legs of one of the attacking wolves, cutting them from beneath it. It crashed to the side but managed to get back up on its feet, circled and then came in a second time. Gryas could see the other wolves attacking so he adopted a defensive position and held his shield ready. He felt them bash into it one after another as he turned his shield to face each of the attacks. Some damage was able to go through but he was able to dish out more damage with his thorns. Each of the wolves HP bars dropped to about half as they retreated briefly and began to circle once more. The past of this combat was a lot faster then the last one, hell they dropped him by a heap of HP just on their first attack but Gryas now had his prey on the ropes.
