[PP-F13] Of Hearsay and Falsehoods

Recommended Posts

The axe flew from his grip and fell into a thick of nearby brush. The brunette's lips distance themselves as he tried to speak, though words didn't leave his mouth. He was defeated. Beaten. Toyed with like a useless kitten... All of his wit was exhausted on petty remarks and useless taunts that when he tried to think of a clever retort, nothing but blanks came to mind. He'd tried every trick in his book, every possible solution to this problem and to what effect? At what cost? His well-thought out plan to murder low-level players in cold blood led to such a sorry outcome, and his pride was shattered after being played around with by a player double his own level.

It was clear that there was no making it out alive, not in any capacity he wanted to be. His friend was already captured, held down by the Knight's companion... he didn't want that same fate. "F**king scum!" Twisting on the balls of his feet, he turned and sprinted as fast as he could the opposite way. Perhaps the loss of his weapon would allow him to outrun the Knight? He didn't know why he bothered trying. It would be useless. But there was nothing else he could do.

Can the Dagger Guy feel his arms at this point? Like, Birdie's been kneeling into them for a while.

H-he ran … Macradon was mind boggled, he had given up, everything, giving up his weapon to run away. Quickly setting his feet into the ground so he could get a good sprint going. Lifting his sword over his right shoulder, Macradon would begin his sprint “I’ll be back soon, please stay safe” he said to Birdie as he ran off to get the other person. It did seem like Birdie had everything under control, having him stay under her so he wouldn’t be able to leave. Macradon’s plan was to capture both of them at low HP, holding them up against their health. If Macradon could capture this guy, they would be able to transfer them to the jail place where they would be locked up until everything was over, it would be a valid punishment until the game was cleared so they could be confronted by the authorities so they can be punished by law for murder and the like for what they did. As he got closer and closer to the player, his sword over his shoulder began to glow in a dark scarlet hue as he got close and bashed the orange player in the back of his head with the pommel. All the momentum pushed him down into the ground so hard that he was staggering on the spot, unable to move. "Please Birdie be safe" he thought, hoping that she was still ok, as he had been running a bit away from where they were before.

Since pain really isn't a thing in this game, I'd think he could probably still feel it, but it would probably just be uncomfortable.

"Don't worry about me, go!" she screamed in an affirming tone, watching Mac give chase to the fleeing orange player immediately after. With only a few muffled gasps escaping the dagger guy's mouth at this point, the world grew surprisingly quiet in the absence of swordplay and back-to-back insults. Birdie curiously lowered her eyes to the man she'd been subduing, keeping quiet until he posed a question. "Guess we don't get a trial in court or nothin'?" She smiled in reply and giggled, "I wouldn't bet on it, pal."

A little way through the forest, the once-cloaked figure had toppled over with his limbs barely managing to keep him upright. "Th-this is it..." the brunette mumbled, defeated by the overwhelming effects of Macradon's stun. "This is how it ends... all that planning... a-all that strategizing, theory-crafting, building relations... all for nothing." The man glared at Mac from the corner of his eye, eyebrows pulling together in a vague attempt to seem threatening. "W-well, what are you waiting for... finish the job off. Just... kill me..." he pleaded, eyes pressing shut.

Macradon would down onto the man on the ground, stunned, grounded so to speak. Macradon would laugh loud and with an audible glee “Oh … kill you? Why should I kill you, that would be too easy. I’m throwing you two guys into jail, you can rot in there until the game is cleared so you can be charged by the authorities when we get out” Macradon said with a small grin, but whatever expression he would’ve had, the helmet would shield off any vision towards those emotions, making his statue nothing more than an expressionless figure, other than the different tone of voices he could produce to express his emotions to the fullest. Macradon would sheathe his large greatsword on his back harns once again, and would proceed to grab an arm and a leg of the stunned brunette, throwing him up on his back in a Fireman’s Lift, holding him secure where he if he tried to escape, Macradon would be able to throw him into submission with ease. Coming walking back with the bad guy on his back, Macradon would doff his helmet completely into his inventory as a smile showed itself to Birdie “I’m glad you’re ok” he said, which he really felt.

Helpless, pathetic, and defeated by the likes of the very guild he despised, the brunette gave little more than a whimper and a groan as Mac heaved him over both those armoured shoulders. In his mind, the fight wasn't over, and he would struggle and wriggle all the way there, but a life of confinement until Aincrad's end was inevitable.

In another part of the forest, Birdie felt her arms growing weaker. She knew it wasn't real fatigue - nothing that happened in SAO had any real effect on her body, save for dying of course. Before she had a chance really think about it, a set of clunky footsteps caught her attention and she turned sharply, gazing at the source of the noise. PhewBirdie thought. "Back at ya Mac. I see you caught up with our little friend in the end," she said, glancing to the player he was carrying.

Carefully, she stood over the dagger guy and pulled him up by the arms, getting him to a stood position. "Here's the deal - you try to run, I'll stick this rapier where the Sun don't shine and drag your ass back to town. Got it?" She fastened the man's arms further across his back and he gave a reluctant nod, eliciting a smile from Birdie. "Good. You all set to head back, Mac?"

With a great smile, Macradon would nod at the bluenette. It would’ve been tragic if she was left hurt while he was away, he would’ve felt too guilty. “Yeah, let’s head back” he said, beginning to navigate through the forest towards the closest settlement, which wasn’t too far from here. Macradon could feel the struggle on his shoulders, but he wasn’t really too worried as he was at the great advantage, if the guy on his head would hit him with a stun attack, Macradon would probably fall and smash the guy onto the ground with him. There wasn’t really much he was worried about, and there shouldn’t be anything to worry about, at least that’s what he would be thinking. “So this went well” he said with a slight giggle to Birdie as the two would begin to walk towards the town, the rumor they both were out for was debunked, but at least they made a dent into the Laughing Coffin, and it wasn’t really difficult.

She couldn't help but crack a smile. "Hmm, let's see..." In an attempt to recall the recent transpiring of events, the bluenette faced forwards and looked up at the sky ahead. "We heard a little rumour about unique materials, came out to here to find them, figured out what is probably the lamest plot ever to commit murder in this game, saved a bunch of guys from death, saved a bunch of guys from you two-" the bluenette briefly glared at the man in front of her. "-beat 'em up in a pretty horrible excuse for a fight and now we're escorting them back to town... huh, that actually could've gone way worse." What started as a comical list turned into a fairly cohesive summary of the evening, it was a miracle how nobody had gotten seriously save hurt- save for the perpetrators, of course. She focused on the road ahead, growing more comfortable with the situation. "Hm... hey, how are we getting these guys past the town guards? Wouldn't they be attacked on sight?"

“It could indeed have gone worse” Macradon replied with a smug smile. It was a great point Birdie came with, should they bring these guys down to jail … “If we stay somewhat away from the gates, we could ask bypassers. We could ask some people to bring us 2 teleportation crystals and designate them to jail? I got plenty of Col to spare, so I could just pay” he said, as that was the general idea he would have thought. He could feel the imminent flailing on top of his shoulders, like a child throwing a tantrum, a lot of wiggling to no avail, as Macradon had a firm grip on him, having him locked into a set position for Macradon’s ease. “Hey Birdie …” he said slightly hesitant “... I have something I want to ask you after this ordeal” he continued “But let’s finish this first, just a heads up” he said and chortled lightly as he continued to walk.

She nodded. Having both players teleported into Black Iron Palace seemed the most logical solution - in fact, it might've been the only way to bypass the town guards entirely. When the time came, she would offer to pay half of the costs herself, but a wriggle from Dagger Guy forced her attention elsewhere. "Hey, quit it!" Tugging hard on the man's arms, his struggling ceased in an instant, leading her to sigh quietly in relief.

"O-oh, uh... sure, anything." The bluenette didn't think too much about what Mac wanted to ask her - that said, she hadn't a clue what the question might be. Instead of dwelling on it for too long, she drew her eyes to the path ahead and squinted through the trees, hoping to get a peep of a town wall or settlement approaching in the distance. Dimly lit street lamps glowed in the distance, a few minutes off at least, so they still had a little ways to go. "So, is this your first time handling PK'ers? I mean," she smirked and looked at t the convict-to-be on Mac's shoulders, "If you can really call these guys that."

Looking over at Birdie with a smile, Macradon would make a small chortle escape as he said “You could say so, but I’ve encountered countless PK’ers, and some were even close friends” he said, remembering both Dom and Zelrius, two acquaintances of his, Dom being his old mentor. Having these two idiots to deal with, Macradon wasn’t being fond of Orange or Red players, but there were indeed a lot of scum in those ranks of range people. From his memory, Teayre and Opal were two people that were not needed in the game, all they did was delay the game’s progress, as well as take life as they pleased. He would let out a deep sigh as he continued to walk. They weren’t too far from the town, so a bit of walking until they got close should suffice, then they just had to wait for a passerby to get them two crystals.

"Close friends?" Birdie repeated, "I see..." Albeit to a much, much lesser degree, she had similar experiences with PK'ers. Aereth and Beatbox were two good friends who both wanted to end Laughing Coffin's tyrannical reign, though only one chose to wear the orange cursor and the latter died biting off more than he could chew- perhaps willingly, but she would never know for certain.

Players started passing by as the four neared town. Any low-levels who'd fallen for the ploy probably figured out the lie long ago, or were still farming tirelessly in the wilderness trying to drop one of the fabled materials. Birdie sighed knowing she'd have to head out there afterwards and search for any remaining players, but it could wait until the orange players were sent away and her business with Macradon was concluded. Unsure how else to ask for help, she noticed a red-headed couple passing by and cleared her throat. "H-hello, Sir, Miss? Sorry to ask, but would you happen to have two Teleportation Crystals you could part ways with? We'll pay the costs," she reassured them in a nervous tone, wondering if they'd comment on the orange captives.

A frontal assault like this, a conversation starting out quite randomly, by two people, holding two other back from whatever they were doing. That was indeed a weird sight to see. But it was indeed what they needed, a few spare teleportation crystals. Now that he thought about it … “Oh wait, we only need a single teleportation crystal” he said to Birdie, even though she had already asked. Quickly opening his HUD, Macradon would open his inventory and lo and behold. A single Teleportation Crystal was left, so they only needed a single one from the strangers. “I’ll pay you 2000 Col, or perhaps .. 3 Tier three materials?” he offered, hoping that would be a sufficient price for a single crystal. The pair looked at each other and nodded. “We do indeed have a spare we can sell you. Tier 3 materials, you say, you must be one of those frontliners since you can get up there and farm materials to be willing to trade them off so easily” the man said to him. “Oh, yeah, I am a frontliner” Macradon replied. In the sudden conversation, the masked person who wielded a dagger before quickly got loose from Birdie's stern grip and said out loud "I won't accept this! I don't want to rot away!" as he broke free, Macradon reacted quickly, throwing the one guy down into the ground he had on his shoulders, in the same motion drawing his sword and went into a deep stance as his tip faced towards the escaping player. His sword was engulfed in a light blue light as he bod ywas thrusted forward in such a manner where his sword pierced the man from back to front like the blade simply teared through his digital material. Quickly pulling the blade out again, Macradon would look down at the one he just threw down onto the ground. "I'm sorry it had to end like this" he said audible enough for all parties to hear what he was saying "Please just, close your eyes" he said to Birdie and the two who had come to their conversation.

"H-hey, what are you-?!" She struggled to keep ahold of the man as he flailed wildly, breaking free of Birdie's grasp as he knocked her to the floor. She toppled over with a thud and hastily raised her head, only to see him running away with Macradon giving chase. The PK'er didn't last long before the Knight caught up and stunned him, and Birdie sighed in relief as the situation was contained once more.

Better not take any risks. She pushed up off the floor and stood up in an instant, glancing towards the Axe Guy. "Don't think you're going anywhere." Unsheathing her rapier, the bluenette aimed it towards his upper body and activated one of her weakest Sword Arts, Above. A weak blue light enveloped her blade and sparks flew from its tip as she plunged into the bad guy, rendering him stunned for a little while longer.

Meanwhile, Mac mentioned something a little suspect. She hoped she was just misinterpreting his words but from her perspective, it sounded like he meant to put an end to the dagger guy- for good. A look of concern came over her as she spoke. "It's done, Mac. We can send these guys to jail and let the authorities deal with them once the game is over."  Glancing nervously at the growing crowd, she felt uneasy about bringing up her worries directly. "Let's finish this the right way."

The right way … the right way … but is it really the right way. “No, I can’t let him go, even if he’s closed away, I just … can’t” he thought in his mind, fighting away any urge to any drastical means. The growing crowd did not bother him, they were to see a Laughing Coffin member, possibly both, be jailed properly. “All my hard work, all this time dedicated to get out of this game, and scum like these guys enjoys halting us” he said as a single tear began to flow down his eye, though his back was turned away from Birdie, so she couldn’t really see what was going on. Was he just gonna let this man live. “He’s a murderer, he has killed at least one person, and by the looks of it, he was certainly planning on taking other’s lives. But … we got them both now, we can seal them off … but will that be enough?” Macradon thought, struggling to grasp what was truly just.

"I'm sorry, Birdie, but I just can't let this slide so easily. This man is a murderer" he said as he took a few steps, standing with his back towards the paralyzed laughing coffin member. "Sorry" he uttered one last time before he quickly spun around, having his sword glow in a light orange hue as he cleaved through the man. This was it, he had done it, it was too late to turn back now. As the orange player was killed, exploded into fragments of crystaline pollygons, Macradon would appear behind the glittering display. A face filled with guilt, but still a just sight in his eyes, a face filled with tears, yet not that sad. Sheathing his sword, Macradon took out his teleportation crystal and slowly walked towards the grounded person. "Sorry ... sorry ... sorry ..." he continuously muttered as he approached the person.

Silence tainted the air outside the city's Southern gate. Dozens of eyes focused on one centre point, the town guards nearly breaking formation to catch a glimpse of the sight. One pair of blue iris' gazed at the dazzling display of digital shards, watching them rise high and drift away into the sky, failing to fully obscure the Knight stood behind. Those blue eyes belonged to the level-36 Fencer as she gazed endlessly at the spot where a man once lay, where an unforgiving act of murder took place under the pretence of justice and righteousness. "..." Words failed her. The crowd remained silent. The brunette, watching his comrade drift lazily through the air, remained silent.

"He would have been in prison, Mac." Her tone was low, crushed. "N-nobody else had to die, he wouldn't kill anybody... why...?" Guilt, uncertainty... disgust. All were latent in her expression, glaring into his teary eyes. "Why... what purpose did killing him serve?"

The tears of guilt continuously fell out of his eyes as he took up the teleportation crystal “Corridor, Open” he uttered as his crystal would burst into dust and open up a portal in front of him, leading to the Black Iron Palace. He would dry off the tears upon his face, not looking at Birdie, as he could not make himself look at anyone, the guilty feeling of judging eyes upon him, it was too hard to bear, too hard to even think about. He would grab the man of who would become green sooner or later from his temporary cursor, he hadn’t done anything wrong yet, he hadn’t murdered anyone, yet, but he was the one having the orange cursor above his head. Macradon would sigh and push him into the portal and make it close. That was one sealed away. “I’m sorry” he said once again, not really directed towards anyone at the moment. He kept on looking down onto the ground, and then towards the couple they had the conversation with. He wouldn’t look directly at them, perhaps just at their general torso direction “I’m sorry for the inconvenience” he said and would hand over 3 Tier 3 Materials. With a dead facade on his outside, Macradon would head towards the town and … escape ... somewhere.

Seconds before the temporary-orange player would disappear, Birdie caught a glimpse of the man's facial expression. She noticed the terror in his eyes having watched his closest friend die, powerless to help after being frozen by paralysis. He looked straight at the bluenette the instant the portal closed, and the guilt residing inside of her was ramped up to 11. How could he do this... why did would he do that? It was pointless to pose those questions to herself- she set her sights on the Knight as he practically whimpered "Sorry" over and over again, his remorseful words stabbing her in the gut like a sharpened blade. As she tried to take off after him, her legs were met with an overwhelming resistance- an internal, invisible force that kept her put. So many questions shrouded her mind, each and every one of them demanding answers. The crowd whispered among themselves, players hesitantly drawing away until only a small gathering remained.

Birdie steeled herself and swiped two fingers through the air. Messages. Write New Message. Recipient: "Macradon".

Body: "I won't lie and say that I understand what happened back there. I don't blame you for putting him out of his misery - maybe he would've gone insane in Black Iron, it's as close to a mental asylum as you can find in Aincrad. But I will not stop until you've answered me. Why?"

Send.

[Wall of text incoming. Kudos if you get the reference in the first paragraph]

He walked a lonely road now, perhaps this was the one he was about to know. He hadn’t the faintest idea of where it goes to, where it leads to, but for now, he just kept walking. He was alone now, only him, walking alone … A loud and sudden mix of an avian’ and a bear’s screech and roar was heard from below. Macradon’s dead-fish eyes looked down upon his small companion. “Bal … go home, I’ll be needing some alone time” he said to his familiar, who reluctantly went home alone through the portals somehow. “Where … where do I go …” he thought for himself as he stood at the teleportation platform. He sighed heavily as he uttered the words “Teleportation, Floor 7”. The bright turquoise light engulfed his armor clad body and transported him to the floor of mountains. “Hello old friend” he muttered for himself, softly. A message had reached him in the form of a small envelope “D-do I even dare …” he thought to himself as he looked down at it. His hand went up to it, but quickly fell down again, he wasn’t ready.

Walking his usual road up the mountain range, Macradon would find his mountain, the mountain he used for training. Looking around, he was glad to see all the memories he had laid here, weapons and small trinkets of his past. His past, that was something that was clean, pure. A life of solitude … was that where he was headed now? His past wasn’t clean anymore, he was a murderer. He had killed a person … it probably wasn’t just, but that was what had happened. As he sat down on top of the mountain range, Macradon would change clothing, back to his old green and black robes he used to wear a lot. He laid down on his back, looking up at the sky and pondered. “Why … why did I do that? Just … why …” he thought. He closed his eyes as the feeling of regret … wasn’t present? He felt so … light hearted ... somehow.

He didn’t cry, he didn’t feel like crying. He didn’t feel like he had done anything wrong anymore, it was just … the initial feeling. “W-what is this …” he thought for himself, bringing his hand up before his head, looking at the hands which blood had touched … in a figurative manner rather than literal, since you couldn’t really bleed in this game. So this is one of the ways to hurt a person, mentally. Laying down his arms onto the ground again, he closed his eyes and took in deep breaths. “Is it time? Should I do it now?” he asked himself, looking at the small envelope on his game HUD. Pressing the small envelope to open up the message to see that it was a message from the one he had thought it was from, Birdie. Breathing in and then exhaling heavily, Macradon would read it through and prepare to write a message back.

"Hey Birdie, I know it was a rash act, I know that it could've been done another way ... but it happened and it cannot be changed" he wrote, thinking of how he should tell her more. Smiling at the part where she tried to help him from beign too sad, Macradon would continue his message to her "I have my reasons ... and for now I'm not sure how I should tell them to you, I would love to, but ... not over a mere message like this, I'd rather be able to say it face to face to you instead ... I'd feel much better if it was so" he wrote, continuing on "You won't have to go long before the answer you seek will be heard, but I'm not ready yet ... perhaps in the near future, where we both probably have settled down, at that point I think we're both able to look each other in the eyes without ... much trouble ..." he wrote, and would try to impose a happy facade towards Birdie, but both of them knew, none of them were actually that happy when he wrote "Whadya think about that?". A very casual sentence at a serious time as this. "Love, Macradon" he wrote, ending the message as he sent it as a reply to her message, Macradon would just lay back down onto the mountain top and try to calm himself.

Ava, you basket case... do you think he has the time to listen to you whine? She pondered, thinking about nothing and everything all at once. In times of great distress, she turned into one of those melodramatic fools who grew neurotic to the bone, obsessing over every last detail to paint herself the biggest picture possible. No doubt Mac's feeling terrible about it, the way he was tearing up as he disappeared into town... but it doesn't make sense. He's a Knight of the Blood, a member of one of the most highly regarded guilds in this stupid game. Why would he risk tarnishing the guild's reputation as a just entity to kill a man who was seconds away from imprisonment. It doesn't add up...

Perhaps she'd never get her answer. Perhaps she would have to go through each and every one of her days, repeating the scene in her head over and over, trying to make sense of Macradon's disgraceful actions. Never gaining proper closure was fast becoming a meme in her life - she had a boyfriend who ran away for a reason she didn't quite understand, a friend kill himself in an impossible duel for no apparent reason, and had nearly brought rightful justice to two player killers- until one died at the hands of an honourable man whom she was trying to impart a reason from.

Birdie fled into the wilderness, striking down any undead that stood in her way as she searched for any low-levels battling Elite monsters. One party had openly admitted to looking for them whilst another denied any knowledge of the broker's information, though they both returned to town as she informed them of the true nature behind the rumour. Having swept high and low through the brown fog and done as much as she could possibly do, the level-36 Fencer retreated to the main settlement to conclude her evening with a faux cider, alone in a tavern. A message buzzed in the corner of her screen- she froze on the spot. Mac...

"I think we'll just have to wait and see, then. So long, red-cloak."

Send.

Lifting her head to the door of the dingy tavern, a faint frown crept across her lips.

  • 2 weeks later...

An open ending, was it really this way Macradon wanted it to end? Either way, this was how it ended, this is how it all concluded, at least for now that is. Laying down on the rocky mountain, Macradon would sigh as the night was about to take over. The skies were slowly getting dark and stars, one by one, began to show up. He closed his eyes to relax for now. His mind wasn’t acting as it was supposed to, it was all messed up. Flashbacks from the death of countless friends, the treachery that was his old Vice Commander, the madness of the orange player and the threat that was Laughing Coffin.
