[PP-F13] Of Hearsay and Falsehoods

Recommended Posts

As the lone player trekked through a barren forest, hand firmly wrapped around the cold steel of her Fleuret, she squinted her blue eyes. She had ventured far out into the wilderness in search of Elite Undead, a class of Living Dead mobs with a supposed chance of dropping unique metal-type materials. When used to craft a piece of equipment, if the rumours held true, an outcome of Uncommon quality or more was guaranteed. Additionally, each item was said to have a unique identifier - a number ID which cut off at 99 - so they were assumed to be in limited supply. The party responsible for such a discovery reported finding 23 before returning to the fields, and curious minds flocked like sheep behind them.

There was no telling how many drops would be left, but the level-35 fencer was among the first to buy the information. Word spread not long after but she'd bought at least ten minutes of uninterrupted farming, and she intended to make use of that time to rack up as many as possible. Stumbling out from the lifeless forest and into a widened clearing on the hillside, she kept still. The mellow brown fog in the distance obscured much of the world, leaving only a curved plain of dead and purple grass visible to the eye. By a small school of graves stood an idle figure, sickly grey hair flowing in the calm winds yet the rest of its figure eerily still. Her approach was quiet and contained, the heels of her boots never moving further than six inches from each other. The enemy's cursor was a relatively light shade of red - it couldn't have been more than her own level, she thought. <<Elite Undead Vagabond>> appeared above its head as she moved within thirty yards, and a smile tugged at her cheeks as she pulled at her weapon's hilt.

"H-huh?"

The Vagabond's head turned freely like an owl, dead white eyes facing the blue-haired woman as its body followed suit. A low groan from the South impulsed her to spin around with a start, and a second Elite Undead mob - a Spearhead - blocked her only exit path. Like a deer in headlights, every muscle in the woman's body tensed up as she froze, and rationale was slow to take the reigns. She swung Tempest Fleuret one way and looked the other, sandwiched between two enemies of equally terrifying strength. Of course it was a trap, "Damn it!"

Macradon would unleash a light scoff, a kin to the tch sound, letting it echo out of his helmet. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw the two undeads following him, he was confused to why they only walked in pairs of two, and not more than this, he hadn't been able to get much information out of that broker, but at least he gave it for 'free', at least when his life was at risk on a mission Macradon lured him into. It was dirty tactics, but when low leveled didn't want to cooperate to clear the game, he just had to find other ways to make them help the frontlines in some way. "I really hope this rumor is true" he thought for himself as he kept his eyes on his small companion. "Bal, if we find more, let's group them together so we can defeat more at once, they seem strong, but I bet we can do it!" he said to his small brown owl-bear cub. Macradon hadn't really done any preparations for this encounter other than walking around the wastelands to scout ahead because the damn broker didn't want to spill out more beans for free than already done.

Quickly stopping up, Macradon would grab out 2 potions and chuck them quickly. His skin beginning to harden in a wood-like appearance, though not visible because of his armor. His teeth and nails beginning to strengthen and become sharper and more ferocious, though hidden by his armor, Macradon could feel the difference. Quickly opening up his HUD, because he was way ahead of the slow undeads, Macradon had gotten not only the name form the broker, but also the direct encounter with the monsters, he would try to scout some more of these suckers so he could take great care of this. Clad in his full plate armor, every movements Macrad made would make audible clangs that would travel decent distances, giving off his location to most, as it was a way to attract more monsters. His tracking would show him not to the ones following him, but ... some actually not too far away. Glancing at the footsteps that would be shown with his <Tracking> skill, Macradon would wave at Balthazar that they should follow the lit up footsteps.

He already had his great-sword drawn out of its back harness so he was ready for any obstacle that would suddenly appear. With his old slab of steel with slight moss and vines on it, Macradon would quickly push it up on his right shoulder, making it easier to transport. As he quickly came to the location of the other monsters, Macradon would notice a person, not fully being able to recognize the person standing there, being flanked by 2 undeads herself. She seemed ... familiar, but he couldn't put a finger on it. Even if he knew her, she probably wouldn't be able to recognize him, as he has change dramatically from his half-plate to full plate, the theme was the same, so maybe that would give it away, but it could be anyone from the Guild, Knights of the Blood Oath, though of what he knows, no one walks around in this guild-oriented clothing like him. That aside, Macradon was ready to fight off the monster she were facing, as well as the ones coming after him. "More are coming, so prepare yourself!" Macradon called out through the visor of his helmet, even though muffled, to make notice of himself, if his contrasting armor to the scenery didn't already caught here eyes, nor his loud armor getting the attention of her ear, probably.

A muffled voice called from the South-west and she swung her eyes yonder, to a man clad head-to-toe in heavy armour. Bearing the red on white of the Knights of the Blood, an ally during her time in Celestial Ascendants and on numerous occasions elsewhere, she was obliged to take his green cursor at face value and nodded briskly. "U-understood!" If more Elite Undead were marching their way then she knew base damage wasn't going to cut it, and her window screen flashed open in an instant. Summoning both a damage potion and her familiar, an <<Ethereal Canine>> appeared before Birdie as she guzzled the little bottle's contents.

Both Undead swung lazily for the Scout but she'd already dashed away, closing the gap between herself and the Knight. She grew curious of the man's identity but all talk could wait until the enemies had perished and the skin was still on their backs. Gliding across the ruined dirt to a sudden halt, she stood with her back facing the heavy clad player. "These bastards will put up one hell of a fight all grouped up, hope you know how to use that sword." Peering at him over the shoulder, she switched focus to the two enemies ahead, threatening them with her nimble Tempest Fleuret - even if appearances could rattle their nerves, the 5'2" fencer wasn't an imposing sight. "How many are we talking, Knight?"

Quickly getting close to the other player, Macradon would prepare to fight, positioning his sword in such a way that he would be able to use the flat of his blade to shove the undeads the blue girl had been fighting closer to the one coming towards them from Macradon’s direction, if he could succeed upon that, he would be able to deal a good amount of damage and possible make them stagger for a moment in such a time frame that they had a free second or two to react on to the monsters. “If I couldn’t use this sword, I wouldn’t be at the position I am now” he said, referencing his 3rd in command with several request for him to raise in the ranks which he had declined a few times now.

Looking at the familiar the girl had, Macradon would grow curious to how many different species that were tamable in this game, or if it just fit with every single mob at a certain size would be tamable. Without much hesitation, Macradon would find blind spots in the undead’s attacks and movements, quickly circling around the bluenette “I’ll be heading in now, try not to get caught in my AOE sword arts” he said and would begin to approach the marching undeads, quickly dodging their sloppy attacks and would then proceed to use the broad flat of his blade to shove the two undeads to the others in a successful approach. “Alright, first part done, let’s get this battle started” he thought and would hold his sword over his right shoulder, having the pommel face towards the 4 now grouped undeads.

With a quick rush with his <Charge> skill, Macradon would proceed to bash the closest undead in the head with his pommel of the massive sword. The strong and momentum filled charge would lead to a shockwave of power being dealt, flowing out as ripples in the air from the head of the targeted undead, striking its companions, knocking them all down with the strong force. “This should suffice for now, let’s take them out” he said and would recover from the short sword art cool down.

A ruckus grew from behind and Birdie spun in an instant, spotting the two other Elite Undead mobs. Though only a keen observation, she noted the ratio of enemies as three-to-one in favour of the Vagabonds and wondered if it bore any importance - not likely she surmised. When she turned back, the Knight was halfway through pulling off crowd control to group the mobs together, and a half-offended eyebrow raise came upon her. She gave the Knight a gruff "Got it!" and stood her ground with Tempest Fleuret, armed and ready to follow up. An AoE Sword Art struck the Undead and forced all four to the ground, and her eyes flicked to the man, chin dipping into a nod.

As she made haste for the Spearhead Undead, the tip of her blade glowed an iridescent blue. She reared back her right arm and unleashed hell with the left, performing a flurry of thrusts and jabs and twirls and swirls until the final stab pierced the fallen Undead. A timer icon flashed on her display as the Sword Art cool down initiated, though her damage was high enough to knock one target into the lower orange zone. "The Spearhead's on one hit!"

Quickly acknowledging the girl’s advance upon the monsters "Aye, I'm going for it", Macradon would watch his timer going down. Just as the girl was out of the way, he would unleash his <Calamity Disaster>. With a lowered sword he would make a quick rushed step forward and would swing his sword upwards, unleashing the sword art. 6 heavy swipes would cleave through the 4 undead, making their health bars go down drastically as the blade would tear away chunks of their health. One of the undeads fell, the Elite Undead Spearhead, though it fell, it didn’t seem like they got any material drop yet, they probably need to kill some more for this very rare drop.

The ones left had just enough health to survive Macradon’s heaviest AOE attack, but it didn’t seem like they would be able to take care of the girl’s attacks "Let's take out the rest!" he called out. Macradon would think of using his energy correctly, trying to use it as sparingly as possible instead of just using his energy left and right. Thinking about what sword art to use next, Macradon would look at the calculations of energy-use as well as effectivity towards the health they currently have.

The weakest Elite fell to Macradon's Calamity Disaster, knocking the enemy numbers to three in favour of four. She hadn't a mind to spare focus on his loot menu, however, as the remaining undead rose from their temporary graves and stumbled to two legs. "Aye!" Over Radiation's timer had barely ticked over as she pulled one arm back and the other forwards, and the system's assistance guided Birdie as she pushed against the ground with all her might. Slash, stab, twirl, jab, the pattern repeated thrice as the closest Vagabond's health grew lesser and lesser and as it endured its last few pixels, the penultimate poke would drain its final slither, rendering the monster dead. A frenzied growl preceded its shattering to thousands of tiny fragments, and her attention was stolen on one thing solely; the loot menu.

I didn't get one...? Her eyebrows pulled inwards. She'd wait to the fight's end to confer with the Knight but if his luck proved greater than hers, it would be a tough pill to swallow. Two more attempts presented themselves at present, and as she gazed out at the mobs and then to the red-clad player, she hated herself for hoping his attack mightn't kill them outright. "A-all yours!"

Macradon would smirk behind his helmet’s visor, showing his amusement that he was to slay the last pair of undead, hopefully getting the infamous Uncommon labeled materials. Quickly stepping in to unleash his flurry of blows once again “Got it” he replied, cleaving 6 times as fast as he possibly could. The swipes having double the amount of strength added to them compared to normal attacks that would still deal heaps of damage, but this was made sure that he would be able to take out the remaining monsters. His 6 swipes would be enough to drop down their HP to 0, making them scatter into fragments of polygonal crystals.

Looking at his acquired loot, Macradon would look at the materials he had gotten from these monsters, but would cringe at the sight of them being normal Tier 2 materials. Looking over at the girl, Macradon would look unsatisfied, but it wasn’t that obvious because of his helmet. “It doesn’t seem like I got any of these ‘special’ materials, only got normal ones” he said. He would clench his fist in anger as he silently muttered to himself and Balthazar “I’ll get that guy and make him regret he lied to me”.

"W-well done,"  the fencer admitted, guiding her Fleuret to the entrance of its sheath. Both health bars ticked below zero and the mobs ceased to be, dropping their valuable currency and 'rare drops'. Since the Knight didn't hold back, she immediately called upon the menu to search for any recent loot drops, going so far as to sort by item type and recently added; nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

The blue-clad woman grimaced silently, her fingers holding loosely in the air until a muffled voice belonging to the Knight grabbed her attention. Despite being unable to read his facial expression, it was obvious from his emphasis on ‘special’ that he harboured similar discontent. She nodded, her eyes riddled with indecision. "No dice, either. Just some crappy armour and Col." To think that a credible broker would lie about his intel... she found it hard to accept; harder than the man beside her, certainly. "Hey," she laid a hand on her waist. "Don't go shooting the messenger, you don't know enough to assume it's bad information. Maybe the items have a lower chance than one-in-four?" In truth, the woman didn't know what to believe, but she didn't want to jump to a confrontational conclusion. A sudden thought occurred to the fencer in that she still didn't know the Knight's identity; Operating under the assumption that the prestigious guild wouldn't house a PK'er, she inhaled sharply and held out her hand. "B-by the way, I wanted to say thanks for showing up when you did. One, I can handle, but two of them..." The girl shook her head. "M-my name's Birdie." Accompanying the handshake, she gave a polite bow and looked at him. "And you?"

Macradon would exhale deeply, seeing that his words did indeed seem harsh “He’s a broker, he should know enough, possibly the drop rate … But it’s just a rumor …” he finished and sighed deeply. Looking over at the bluenette with outstretched arm, Macradon’s memory would kick in as the name ‘Birdie’ sparked a familiar sound to it. Quickly realising this, Macradon did indeed meet this person before. “Oh, Birdie, good seeing you again” he said with a positive tone as he would doff his helmet, holding it under his right arm as his snow white hair and scarlet eyes showed themselves from underneath the darkness of the helmet. With his right hand, Macradon would reach out for a handshake after he had resheathed his great-sword. With a firm grip, Macradon would smile “I’m Macradon, remember?” he happily said and would then avert his eyes towards Balthazar that rested up against his leg “And this is my partner in crime, Balthazar”. As his name was mentioned Balthazar would look up at the bluenette and do his growl screech. A deep growl like a fierce bear, and the screech of the mighty owl of the skies, combined in a single voice.

"Mhm..." She gave an audible sigh as he spoke the words 'just a rumor'. He was right, of course; they'd taken a risk to venture out into the wilderness on nothing more than a whim and had come out of it empty handed. It might not have been a fault on the broker's part - perhaps his most trusted source had lied to him, or maybe something else had made him certain the info was real - either way, no amount of thinking was going to get them the answers they wanted.

Her eyes widened just a little as the man mentioned 'again', he recognised her? All would be revealed as the Knight removed his helmet to reveal a familiar head of snow white hair, and the fencer's expression only grew more surprised until a friendly smile took over. She nodded, "Mac! You're the one who forged my first two rapiers, how could I forget?" She tenderly shook the Blacksmith's hand, switching her focus to the little hybrid animal by his leg. She jumped a little as the creature gave its cry, though a smile quickly followed. "Well, hello there! That's quite the familiar Mac, where'd you get him?" She pulled her hand away and looked to the canine by her side. "This little cutie is Sirius, he's a lot friendly than he looks- and yes, he's tangible." Birdie was referring to the Ethereal Canine's ghostly, wispy appearance and the ghoulish howl he gave upon being called his name.

Familiar introductions out of the way, she looked back up at the Knight. "So, I guess I don't need to ask why you're out here. Hoping to snag a few of those unique materials?" Hands on her waist, the fencer closed her eyes and sighed. "Gotta admit, it's weird they'd go through so much trouble if the news is false. I mean, the party that reported it mentioned they'd collected 23 already... you think they were lying?" She opened her eyes, an eyebrow raised.

Chortling light in glee, Macradon would smile and reply “Feels nice being recognized” he said with a happy voice. He was glad that he wasn’t forgotten, he had hoped he would have an impact on the people he met, or else the fated meetings would’ve been wasted. Looking down on his small familiar, Macradon would agree, “He is quite peculiar, I must give you that. I met this small runt in the mountains of the 7th floor where he roamed around alone, possibly left alone by his parents” he would say, remembering the time when he gave the owlbear a few treats before it would follow him around. At the mention of small runt, Balthazar would push at Macradon, trying to take him off balance. A small screech would emit from its beak in discomfort towards Macradon, he would just crouch down and pet his companion and apologizing. Looking at the wispy wolf, Macradon would reach out his hand flat towards the small wolf, trying to see if it would accept his head pats.

Looking up at Birdie, he would reply “I am not sure myself. It just feels too fishy to just state such a bold statement … I mean, everyone, and I mean everyone will be willing to go out and get some of these valuable materials, high leveled players and low leveled players, everyone would be here and take as many materials as possibly. The possibilities would be that there have already been that many people here than the monsters don’t drop anymore materials, it is highly unlike compared to the players I’ve seen roam the streets of all the towns, unless they grouped up and went out ... “ he would ponder and try to figure out why anyone would lie like that, what would they get out of it other than getting a lot of players out into the fields for nothing than a scam? Then a circulation of thoughts would run through his brain, it might be that he had an idea, but not sure yet.

Smiling, she chuckled quietly as Mac's little familiar roughed the Blacksmith up. "D'aw," she started, "He's a lovely little fella, isn't he? It's sad to think of him wandering around all alone down there." Birdie recalled how she came under the possession of Sirius. On the tenth floor, a certain mob - an <<Undead Hound>> - had roughly a 5% chance of spawning an <<Ethereal Canine>> when killed. If the rare spawn occurred, an astral wolf-dog would linger around for thirty seconds before sinking into the grave of its Undead master, only to spawn anew as a fresh living dead mob. If interrupted via successful taming attempt, however, the creature retained its astral form and bonded to the player, maintaining a wispy appearance indefinitely. Sirius sniffed the Knight's glove, curious and timid like any normal canine, and eagerly slipped under the player's hand with eyes closed in delight.

Watching like a proud owner would, the fencer's delicate gaze rose to Mac. Her eyes grew troubled. "Right. For low-levelled players, the safest way to travel is to move out in groups and hunt together. If their tank is strong enough, they can technically fight any monster for as long as it takes; This would allow them to gather those 'unique materials' with some degree of safety. Thing is, they'll be a helluva lot slower than a solo frontline player. The gain is hardly worth the effort..." She pressed her bottom lip. "But that still doesn't explain why would someone go through so much trouble to play a prank? And a pretty menacing one at that. Like you said, weak and strong players will both flock to this area. If a group's only tank is too weak and chickens out, the low-levels will be left defenceless..." Her words trailed off as she stared at the grass, contemplating. "... and completely vulnerable... sh*t, you don't think... you don't think that's what they were going for?"

Closing his eyes and exhaling deeply, Macradon would get back up and look Birdie in the eyes with a face so stern that it was more serious than he had ever been before “That’s exactly what I’m thinking” he said and quickly donned his helmet on again. “He have to find them before it’s too late. I’ll track as many different Elite Undead as I can” he said and opened up his HUD to track the Undead Elite Vagabond like he did the last time, which was quite successful. Looking at the tracks in the ground and the arrow pointing towards a general direction, Macradon would wave his arm towards the area as he began running towards that area. “This way, there are some monsters this way. If we don’t see those guys there, we can try to Track again until we eventually do find them. Birdie, do you have any idea such criminals could be hiding in this area?” he asked as he ran, having his small owlbear sprint after him.

This was quite the ordeal he hadn't thought of being caught up in. He would have to find that broker again and talk to him about this. Rumor or not, this was quite serious that something like this could happen. He would think of possible places where scumbags like those could ambush a group of low leveled players, where they could easily take them out in a sneak attack and grab whatever they had on them, or perhaps just for the thrill of killing. Macradon shivered, he had seen murders first hand, and he nearly killed another player because of that. He wouldn't let people like this roam these fields, they had to be sent to either a jail or eradicated, making them unable to continue these foul actions.

Eyebrows packed tightly and lips sealed, Birdie gave the Knight a solemn nod and took off after him. Sirius took charge ahead of the Fencer and kept a steady pace with Mac, his weary eyes and keen sense of smell scouting the area as they weaved between barren trees and dead shrubs. At Mac's question, Birdie's eyes pulled together and fell to the floor in contemplation, but she gave a regretful sigh. "No, not at all. If they're using <<Sneak>> then it'll be tough to find them unless we know exactly where to look." She briefly recalled her scout training with Itzal where he ran over the basics of player stealth.  Shadows are a bandit's best friend, but they know you know that. If they're smart, they'll hide either side of the darkest spots they can find.

"W-wait, I have an idea! If the broker's in on it and has player names, he would have passed them onto an orange player so they know who to pray on. People like to lure mobs into a clearing so that there's plenty of room to fight; let's focus our search on shadowed spots and nearby trees." Birdie prayed to God her suspicions where correct - she wasn't hoping that player killers were present, only that if they happened to be somewhere on the thirteenth floor, they'd be camped out in predictable hiding places.

The sound of three successive swords clanging against armour rang through the air. The Fencer's eyes darted around in search of the source direction, though the third clang was loud and unforgiving- and came from straight ahead. "Mac! Can you see them?"

Birdie wasn’t the only one to hear the clash of steel, and it was a fierce sound. Macradon was quite used to the violent delights that came from this game, he had become somewhat addicted to fighting these monsters everywhere, wanting to learn how to fight every single one of them to the most optimal level that he could, honing his blade as much as possible. “Aye, I can hear it too” he replied and his cursor pointed at the same way, the sounds came from, so he would turn off his Tracking overlay of his vision so he had a clear vision of everything. “Bal, give me an analysis!” he said to the owlbear as it would scan over the monsters and what seemed to be players being surrounded by way too strong monsters for them. A loud screech would emit from Balthazar’s beak and would indicate that the far right was where Macradon would be able to hit all the monsters and not tangle the players into his AOE sword art “Thanks” he said to his owlbear, whom would now sit down and watch from afar as Macradon used his <Charge> skill to quickly come to the player’s aide. “Aaaarrgghhh!!” he roared as 6 heavy but swift swings would cleave through the 4 Elite Undeads, taking down their HP quite a notch.

Macradon ran ahead to deal a devastating chunk of damage and Birdie hung back, taking point between the mobs and three lower-level players. "Are you guys alright?" she called out to them, gazing backwards with a fire in her eyes that caused them to nod and mumble incoherently. "Good, stay put if you wanna stay that way!" There wasn't any time to explain the severity of the situation and she had reservations that they'd sussed out the scam, so instructing them to keep nearby was the safest course of action.

The Knight's attack dropped the Undead's HP to above 50% and the blue-clad Fencer sprung into action, shifting her limbs into the correct position for the strongest Rapier-class Sword Art. Free hand grasped tightly behind her back and Fleuret pointed forwards, she tilted her blade slightly to delay Over Radiation's activation and darted forwards for that extra bit of speed, and her weapon shone a brilliant blue as aim assist system controlled her motions. A crescendo of slashes and thrusts and jabs proceeded until the very last strike, where she withstood a brief second of inactivity before leaping away. "All yours!"

Watching only taking down to not even half health on the monsters with his attacks, Macradon would scoff at them and whip up several feral swipes aiming to decimate them as much as possible, taking down just one of the Elite Undeads without much effort, but keeping three of them alive, Macradon would be assured that Birdie would be able to take care of yet one more, and Macradon would then be able to proceed and take down the last remaining to with some strong strikes again, perhaps a <Tempest> or lower than that. His 6 strikes cleaved right through the 4 undeads, killing the one and leaving 3 left with very little health left. Again, just enough away from the border to make it into the next zone. Making a very audible “Tch” Macradon would face towards Birdie, hoping that she understood his intentions that she should jump in and take one of them out so Macradon would have a better chance of angling his attacks so he wouldn’t hit the players as he would say "1 down, 3 to go". But now that one of the undeads were dead, they would surely be able to escape their surrounding tactic.

She cast a look over to Macradon as he spoke, giving a nod in reply. "Got it!" Though the enemies had been grouped up nicely before, with the defeat of an Elite Undead, a gap had opened up between the three remaining. In an effort to control the crowd and allow Mac to finish off the last two, the bluenette focused on the straggler and pulled her blade forwards, getting into the ready position for her favoured Sword Art Over Radiation.

Tempest Fleuret came to life with a sheen of luminescent blue light and Birdie shot forwards with help from the aim assist system, tearing through what remained of the Elite Undead Vagabond's health bar until nothing remained. As the monster released a bellowing cry and shattered into a thousand digital shards, she briefly inspected the loot window for any sign of the fabled unique materials, though any remaining hope that the rumour was true had already died. The last two could easily be taken out by an AoE Sword Art from Macradon and in realising that, the fencer sheathed her blade and awaited the fight's end.

Quickly with little effort, Macradon would sidestep quickly, having the two remaining monsters lined up before him with no players in his direct line of attack. With his sword raised up over his right shoulder, Macradon’s sword, Sword of the Ancient, would glow in a deep orange color as it was thrusted heavily towards the monsters. The first hit bashing the skull of the Elite Undead, sending such a heavy blow outwards that also struck the one behind it, decimating its skull making it break into fragments as its health landed to zero and dispersed into crystalline polygons. Quickly resheathing his sword onto the harness on his back, Macradon would look over at the players who had seemingly been ambushed or perhaps outnumbered by the monsters. “Are you hurt?” he asked with a caring tone, he would not let anyone die while he could do anything against it, it would only leave more regret in his life.
