<<Avalanche>>

This quest takes place on Floor 4
This quest is repeatable

Word from the Information Brokers speaks of a hidden respawning Field Boss on Floor 4. A small party reported having farmed the <<Ice Elementals>> found throughout the Tundra awakened a hidden Field Boss in the form of a giant <<Ice Elemental>>. This monster, identified as <<Avalanche>>, proved to be a dangerous opponent for the relatively low leveled party, and dropped a powerful Alchemical Concotion.

Requirements:

  • -At least two [2] pages of Rp  (21 or more posts)
  • -Avalanche must be defeated
  • -Maximum Party Size of 3
  • -Repeat completions will only yield <<Snowfrost>>

Avalanche Information:

<Avalanche> is a respawning Field Boss and has the following statistics:
HP: 100
Damage per Attack: 40

Rewards:

  1. <<Snowfrost>> This incredibly potent alchemical salve can be applied to a piece of armor, increasing resistance to Fire Damage for one battle. [The wearer will only take half damage from the burning damage over time effect]
  2. 2 Skill Points

Running her fingers over the short, curly fur that covered her companion's long body, Callie sat on a bench near Snowfrost's teleport gate. Danesh lay curled in her lap, eyes closed while his horned head pressed into the palm of her other, immobile hand laying beside him. She stared out over the city, dimly lit with the thick cloud cover overhead that brought a light snowfall across the wintry town. After having requested Shield's assistance with another quest and making arrangements to meet the man that afternoon, she realized that she had taken a liking to the scenery. Despite the bite of the chilled air that she only assumed grew more harsh farther away from the safe zone, the architecture was more rustic than the busy snow-lined streets and buildings she would sometimes see back home.

"Do you think we'll find anything interesting out there, Dani?" She presented her idle thoughts to the familiar resting in her lap. Her eyes trailed over the frostbitten signs that hung outside of shops while she daydreamed about what hidden wonders a snow-covered floor might hold, more looking forward to sight-seeing than completing the quest she had picked out.

Shield stepped out of the teleportation gate and set about tracking down the player who had requested his aid. He had gotten along fairly well with Callie since their rather unconventional first meeting, during which he had had to remove her foot from her mouth due to a challenge from an overly braggadocios player with red hair. He typically did put in so much time carrying the same player through quests, but it had been good for him to get out of the dungeons a little bit and breathe some different air.

In his sleeve, Lilith was bundled up tight, the little colorful serpent bound up in a custom vanity clothing item. Essentially, it was a sleeve from a knit sweater, but to a snake, it made the perfect sweater on its own. He patted the uneven lumpy bundle in his sleeve and continued to walk. Eventually, he spotted the pale, seafoam hair of his adventuring partner and raised his hand in greeting.

"Glad to see you're well," he said, giving his head a slight incline. "Between loud red-heads and holes in floors, you seem to be struggling to remain in one piece."

The unmistakable form of a player making their way towards her caught Callie's attention at the corner of her eye, causing the woman to turn and offer Shield a soft smile. With his words, her expression quickly shifted with narrowed brows and a widened smirk. "Hey, I think I've--" She stopped herself short and took on a slight paused before finishing her sentence. "managed." The note of confidence she started out with had faded quickly, realizing that Shield had plenty of room to give her a hard time over her previous mishaps.

Her features softened, and she gave a short exhale through her nose. Cupping her hands to scoop the snowy familiar up from her lap, she guided her sleepy companion to his usual perch across her shoulders and stood herself up. "Anyway, thank you for meeting me out here. I'm able to handle plenty on the low floors, but this boss sounded like a bit much."

"It can be,"  Shield said with a nod, remembering his last time he had completed the quest. It had been a long, unproductive fight, to say the least. "As such, we should get a move on. Not that I'm in a hurry to get out of here, but this fight has the potential to last a lot longer than seems probable on paper."

He knew that he had leveled quite a bit since the last time, but he wanted to be prepared for the possibility of another slug-fest in the snow. He led the way, following the little path out of town that led out into the snow-blanketed forest beyond. He kept his gait at a moderate pace, not wanting to get too far ahead of Callie and remembering that on their last outing she had preferred to take a little time to sight-see.

"Someday I may bring you back up here for another quest in return for me helping on this one," he said, nodding towards their left as they walked. "That way is one of the most profitable quests to farm. The drop gives you an item that adds enhancement slots to imperfect items. In most cases, it's best to just commission a better weapon, but if you have something with a unique enhancement... well, then it might be worth the grind to improve a potentially potent item."

With a nod, she moved to follow his lead, walking beside Shield while her gaze naturally traveled along the rolling hills of snow that the floor had to offer. The frost-covered trees that lay sprinkled throughout the landscape were hardly as breathtaking as the underground city on the twenty-first, and so her attention lingered in the direction Shield pointed out as he described another quest he was familiar with. "Sounds fair." She certainly had no quams for paying back his time with her own, though she would admit a touch of surprise at the thought of him needing her help for anything. Sure, tank builds typically lacked in damage and she might be able to pick up some of that slack, but after remembering how quickly the bandits on the ninth floor had fallen to his defensive damage she wondered what on this lower floor could withstand much of that punishment.

She had gained a handful of levels and increased her weapon skill since their first excursion, and so there was a bit of curiosity in the back of her mind to see those bigger numbers in action. They continued well into the white forest with few signs of passive wildlife, let alone monsters. "I read that it was hidden, or could at least be hard to find. Think we'll have to do any searching?" She asked, filling the silence that had fallen over them.

"I've never particularly known this boss t-" As if in response to Shield's incredulity, a nearby hill began to rumble. Shield whipped his head around, sword and shield already at attention and his eyes sharp, barely having time to draw in breath to <Focused Howl>. "Don't you know that it's rude to interrupt!?"

The monster's head snapped toward Shield, the ice covered foe considering him for a moment before leaping into the air, raising both hands at once. Its great fists came down together, sending a cascade of snow in all directions. When the dust cleared, he was in the middle of the creature's forearms, his fist having struck just behind him.

"Well," he thought aloud, "I saw that attack going very differently." He shrugged and dipped down into a defensive stance, Shield up and ready. So far this was not shaping up to be any different from the last fight.

Not expecting the monster's messy appearance, Callie stopped short. Her left arm hurriedly raised in front of her face that winced away from the flurry of powder that filled the air after the field boss made its landing in the otherwise clear blanket of snow in front of them. "Nevermind, then!" She said simply, reaching her opposite hand up and over her shoulder to grab at the hilt of her broadsword.

She drew the weapon and held it straight in front of her, taking just a moment to remember its weight. She took in a deep breath of chilled air through her nostrils, shifting the blade to her left before she leaned forward to close the gap between herself and the monster's flank. With a soft white glow around the steel of her weapon, she drew four long slashes across Avalanche's glacial body. Watching its health bar drop, her brows lifted slightly with a mumbled thought, "Well, that's definitely an improvement."

Since Callie had been the only one to successfully harm the thing, Shield had no choice but to focus on pumping her up. He focused his attention to the tip of his sword, gathering a ball of energy which he flung her way with a snap of his wrist. He then turned his focus back to the Avalanche. So far, it had not proved itself to be any more of a threat than it had been before. Granted, the second encounter of this beast included freeze effects and a nasty AoE attack, but Shield had fought its first form ad nauseum, and it had never showed any signs of having such an ability.

Still, he braced himself behind his shield as the boss swung back its great fists, unleashing a brutal hay maker that sailed directly over both players' heads and took out a nearby tree. It was all he could do to not throw up his hands in exasperation. As a tank, one of the greatest frustrations was an enemy that did not have high accuracy. It became a challenge of trying to jump in the way of poorly aimed attacks and do the enemy's work for them.

"This fight might be all you, Callie," he called out, the slightest of groans audible behind his words. "I can only do so much if it can't land a hit."

She found herself stumbling backwards, arms shifting to either side of her avatar as the glacial beast heaved its body to try and deliver a clumsy strike against the players. Callie had stiffened, only flinching when the crash of Avalanche's fist hitting the forest behind them rang out, and she cast a glance over her shoulder at the torn roots that hung in the air. Turning her attention back to their foe, she brought the claymore back to her front and gripped it tightly.

If she wasn't so focused on reminding herself of core combat mechanics, she would have wondered how much danger she was really putting herself in. Barring any unexpected area abilities or sudden environmental effects, she shouldn't have to worry about the boss giving her a second thought. And Shield would have warned her beforehand had he known of anything out of the ordinary. Having missed her opportunity, their target was already raising his bulky arms for another attack. "No pressure, right?" Callie called back with a tiny smirk.

"None at all," Shield answered, though it was evident from his tone that he was speaking plainly and without sarcasm. "He's clumsy, or my thorns would have finished him off a lot faster. We just have to whittle him down," he called over to her. He tightened the grip on his sword, darting to the side to draw the boss' attention. Even he had to admit that the attack had come a little close to Callie. He needed to create some distance. so that she would have more of a buffer to be able to relax and focus.

He found a spot on top of a small hill, making him stand out from the landscape more than he already had. From his obvious vantage point, he gripped harder on the hilt of his sword. Whatever attack finally landed would be potent. He needed to make sure he kept the grip on his weapon to drive his riposte home. The Avalanche, following him with its beady eyes, lumbered through the snow, each footfall knocking sheets of snow from nearby trees, or the few that had still managed to cling onto their snow. With a deep bellow, it drew back its fist, but Shield could already tell its attack was going wide. He sprinted to the side to try to catch the attack, but it sailed past him, colliding with a nearby tree.

"Damn."

With the immediate threat of danger no longer as pressing in her mind, Callie's eyes followed Avalanche's movement as it turned away from her to focus all of its attention on the tank that drew it further away. Grateful to no longer have the monster's tall gaze in her general direction, Callie gave a shrug of her right shoulder to jostle the familiar who seemed to be trying to ignore the battle. "Honestly, are you always going to be this difficult?" She questioned the dragon with an exasperated tone. "The sooner you help out, the sooner we can leave." She tried to coax Danesh into action.

Callie's eyes found a chance to strike as Avalanche had pulled back for an attack of its own. Without waiting for her familiar to leave his perch, she pulled her blade to her right and dashed forward through the uneven snow. The steel gave off another soft light and her energy bar drained slightly with the empowered attack, landing another set of blows into the wide icicle that served as its left leg.

Shield stood at the ready, prepared for the next strike. His shield was up. His sword was out and on guard. With the extra damage that Callie had dealt, Shield knew that whatever he could land on the thing would be its undoing. All he had to do was wait for the moment. As it wound up for yet another attack, Shield could see the determination in its eyes.

This is it.

There was something in its timing that felt smooth and natural as it stepped into the attack. It launched its fist forward.

Here it comes!

As it sped its attack on, there was a hitch in its step. Shield glanced down, wondering what might have thrown it off. Had it stepped on something or slipped in the deep snow? His eyes found the source of the problem. Where Callie had hit, there was a set of fresh red welts glowing on the Avalanche's leg. It teetered for a moment, and then its leg completely separated at the point of impact. With a great flailing of its massive limbs, it came crashing to the ground.

You have got to be kidding.

Callie had put just enough distance between herself and the frozen monster to catch her breath and run her eyes over the exposed portions of its body for anything that might make her job easier. They caught on the area she had just withdrawn from, spotting a few cracks in the ice alongside the red, pixelated gashes. As the monster's weight leaned onto the limb to support its attack, thin tendrils branched out until it gave way.

She stopped short, once again bringing her left arm up to shield herself from the white powder that flew through the air after the boss had crashed into the ground. Her impromptu defense didn't do much, leaving patches of snow clinging to her hair and clothes while she backed up to put a bit of distance between herself and Avalanche again. "Oops..." She mumbled under her breath.

Shield rolled his eyes back and lifted his chin, looking up into the trees in exasperation. Just as he did so, a fresh wave of snow fell from their boughs and landed on his face. He stood there, facing straight up into the layer of snow that now covered his face, considering the battle so far. With a sigh, he wiped the snow away and marched himself forward.

He stopped just short of the boss, staring straight down into its face which was literally half his height. He held out his sword and tapped the flat of it against the fallen boss' cheek.

"Hey! Big guy!" he shouted in the thing's face. It snapped its eyes onto him, blinking in silence. Clearly, nobody had used this tactic before. "I'm right here! Hit me!"

The Avalanche propped itself up onto one elbow and swung its other arm back, bringing a hammer fist down directly on top of Shield. The point of his sword thrust up into the attack, and the boss' health immediately drained down to zero. With a shortened roar, the enemy bust into light blue polygons and was gone.

"Finally," he sighed, slacking his shoulders and banishing his sword. "Never again."

Callie let out a huff of air that bounced off of her lip and ruffled her cerulean bangs. They fell back into place while she brought the tip of her broadsword back to its sheathe, her fingers then working to loosen the clumps of snow from her hair and pat them away from her clothes. Trudging through the white-topped ground towards Shield, she tucked some loose strands behind her ear with an apologetic smile.

"Sorry, that one was a bit of a pain." She chuckled lightly. From her perspective, the fight hadn't gone half-bad, and if she had known just how clumsy the monster would have been she almost wanted to say that she could have faced it on her own, despite her lack of defensive stats.

With the quest completed, Callie looked over her shoulder. "Well, not sure if there's anything else out here worth your while. Although," A curious smile crawled across her lips as she turned back to Shield. "I think I saw something like a passageway hiding behind some trees at the base of that mountain we passed."

Shield took another breath and with his exhale, he used his hand to wave aside the apology as unnecessary. He had not raised his voice, but the irritation had begun to show. He reigned it in now, returning to his usual calm state.

"No need for that," he said to reiterate the point. "This was actually nothing compared to how fruitless my last bout with the cretin was. The player I dragged along was literally level one and had no way to help, plus my defenses were nowhere near as effective as they are now. Even so, when monsters have no real accuracy stat to speak of, fighting defensively becomes problematic."

He shrugged at her suggestion, not having noticed anything himself, but overall enjoying the idea of doing anything aside from fighting that fight again. "Lead the way," he said, making a quick adjustment of his gear to replace his bulky armor with a pair of small hoop earrings. He then gestured back the way from which they had come. "I trust you remember how to get back there?" He reached a hand into his sleeve, checking to make sure that Lilith was still in one piece. She had not moved from her little sweater tube, enjoying what little warmth there was to be had in such a cold world, yet inside of such a warm set of sleeves.

"Yikes." She frowned at his description of the last encounter with the icy field boss. She felt a small, fleeting sense of pride that she could at least contribute, even if she didn't hold the confidence to be going out and soloing these types of encounters.

Her sympathetic expression faded and she took on a satisfied smile when Shield agreed on a bit of exploration before they would head back to town. She nodded, turning on her heel as she started off in the direction they had come, veering a bit to the right towards the snow-covered mountains she had been referring to.

She hadn't thought anything of it at the time, but sure enough they came across a cluster of tightly-packed trees standing very close to the base of the mountain's edge that looked a bit out-of-place compared to how the rest of the flora was spread out around them. Callie took the lead, slipping past the bark and branches and entering into a tunnel that seemed to be carved out of the surrounding rock. "Some more caves, huh?" She thought aloud, continuing on into the dim, empty passage. The walls looked jagged and natural, but the floor beneath them was smooth and almost patterned. Besides the light that spilled in from behind them, Callie's eyes were drawn to the small fixtures that stuck out at an angle towards the bottom of the walls, providing a soft light from something that looked like small lanterns hung from stakes that had been driven into the rock.

"This place is a planned encounter of some sort," Shield thought aloud, going first into the room to inspect and make sure it was at least somewhat safe. Lately, the trend seemed to be throwing caution to the wind and falling through floors, but they had managed alright so far. As long as they avoided undue risk on higher floors, they should be fine. "It's hard to know what to make of it from just the entrance," he said, running his hands along the walls. "We'll have to venture deeper. Could be the entrance to a dungeon, or maybe just a treasure room."

As he poked further into the entrance, turning the first bend, Shield spotted a bit of ore running through the nearby wall. It seemed actually to be growing out of it like a piece of fruit intended to be harvested rather than actually being a part of the living rock.

I suppose this is how they have materials spawn without forcing players to actually mine up the environment to get them.

He plucked up the red stained stone and pocketed it.

"Hmm," She let out a thoughtful hum. "Yeah, it's certainly different from the caves on the twenty-first." She commented, staring at the different giveaways as they walked. For a short while, the path continued down with the same lanterns lighting the walls and the same marble floor beneath their feet. Callie's interest was sparked once more at the sight of a fork in their path, and when they'd drawn closer she stopped to survey a large tapestry that hung from the cave wall.

Her head cocked to the side, inspecting the illustration that depicted a large snowflake--or at least, something that was shaped like a snowflake--nestled away in the center of a snow-topped mountain. Without taking her eyes off the picture, her chin turned towards Shield. "Think that's the prize inside?" She asked with a slightly amused tone. "Problem is," Her hands found her hips and she finally pulled her gaze away from the tapestry. "I'm awful with puzzles, and mazes." Callie frowned as her head turned from side to side to look down each identical path to either side of them.

Shield gave a shrug at the question. Most of his expertise on the lower floors came from farming known spots, but this one was a little ways off of his radar. "Don't ask me," he said. "This is your little side-quest. I'll lend a hand if I can, but right now we don't have much information to solve whatever all of this is."

He took it in turn to look down either branch, but in the end, there was yet no way to distinguish the value of choosing one over the other. His guess so far was as good as hers, so he might as well give her the satisfaction of being able to pursue the prize more actively. "I think you should decide. Our information is about equal, but this is a venture likely best suited to your level more so than it is mine." He stood back and crossed his arms, waiting to see what Callie would choose.
