History / Personality
As long as he could remember, Hikaru has always been intrigued by the lifestyle and history of the Japanese swordsman. Ever since he was five years old, he had attended kendo and martial arts classes to train to become a swordsman himself. In his off time, he would study up on Japanese culture. In particular, he studied the eras of the samurai, including everything ranging from the beginning of the Samurai's history in the Nara period to the Meiji period in which the imperial government shut down the rule of the samurai. As time went on, his skills with a sword had continued to improve and now currently owns his own dojo where he teaches kendo and martial arts. Despite his young age, he had proven that, although he is far from being the best around, he was a great teacher. 

If there was one other thing that Hikaru loved to do, it was play games, especially RPGs and MMOs where he could become a swordsman. On a trip to Japan, Hikaru heard about Sword Art Online and how it was due to release within the next few days. After doing some research and learning that it was a Virtual MMORPG, he couldn't help but get excited as he envisioned himself as a Samurai and wearing the armor himself instead of watching it all on a screen. He wasted no time reserving a hard copy and a Nerve Gear, which proved difficult but he managed it. 

When SAO finally released, Hikaru rushed to the game store that had his reservation and immediately took it to the hotel at which he was staying and got set up. Upon entering the game, he was so shocked to find that everything looked so real. Kneeling down, he felt the cobblestone beneath him and was amazed to find that it really felt like actual cobblestone. He was in a new world and couldn't wait to explore it.

Once the news of the Death Game was announced, however, Hikaru's heart sank... He was worried, as anyone should be. He knew that he would have to make sacrifices that he wouldn't make normally in a game. He had to make sure that he set up the way he needed to and not how he wanted to... Even if it forsakes the traditional Samurai flair...

Kind-hearted and gentle, Hikaru is quick to help those who need it, though he won't go out of his way if he feels that they are asking for too much. As social as he can be, Hikaru prefers to keep to himself in his off time and likes to read. Doesn't make friends too often, but when he does, they become family to him and will nearly always put their needs before his own. Calm and collected in the face of a challenge and serious to a fault when facing said challenges. 

Virtues:
Understanding 
Hikaru has always taken other people's views into account whenever he makes a decision involving a group. He will do his utmost to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and is tolerant of other people's views, ideals, and opinions. It is rare that Hikaru will speak out against someone, but it is usually when they are obviously in the wrong via evidence and facts.

Gentle
Hikaru had always made it his goal to be friendly towards anyone he meets and would never intentionally hurt someone. Many people tend to trust him due to his warm smile and caring personality. Should he or someone he cares about be insulted, however, it's like day and night... (See Venomous in the Flaws section)

Calm
Self-training and meditation had helped Hikaru to develop a peace of mind and a calm demeanor even in the face of overwhelming odds. This helps him to focus and concentrate on the task at hand and keep a level head to minimize any errors. Because of this, he can typically find the correct solution to most situations with ease.

 

Flaws:
Venomous
Hikaru is, by nature, not a mean or spiteful individual. If provoked, however, he can become your worst nightmare and will do his utmost to make sure you know it. The most common trigger to this mean side of him is to insult someone he considers family.

Loner
Although he can be pretty social when he wants to be, Hikaru prefers his solitude over the chatter of a crowd. Oftentimes, he can be found alone under a tree reading a book of some kind. Should someone try to insist on talking to him while he is trying to relax, he will get up without a word and just walk away. 

Solemn
Hikaru has always been serious and calculative. Sure he can be a nice guy, but when it all boils sown to it, he much prefers to not be bothered. He also lacks a sense of humor, which tends to aggravate a good number of people he meets. However, despite all of this, his solemn demeanor can also be looked at as being collected and composed.
