[F3-PP] <Feeding the Enemy> What is, will be

Recommended Posts

As Benjamin managed to knock the spider down to it's last few slivers of health, the behavior of it shifted to one of desperation.  Ben, not having noticed this quick shift, spun himself in to finish off the low health foe.  The spider, however, put on a quick burst of speed and managed to dodge out of the way of the attack.  It momentum brought it into the wall of the pit they were fighting in, and it used the speed to bounce off the wall and straight at Benjamin's head.  Luckily, Ben's evasion item was first class, and he ducked out of the way in time, rolling over to the side as it passed him by.  This fight wasn't quite as over as he had first thought it was.  Ben got his weapons ready for another bought of violence, and the spider he was fighting against got itself ready as well.  It was time to take this thing out.

Benjamin charged forward, pressing his advantage against the enemy he had encountered, trying to take the enemy out before it started to cause himself any more damage.  Ben jumped forward, trying to keep up with the spider's newly enhanced speed.  Unfortunately for the enemy spider, he could only maneuver so much inside this enclosed space, and it wasn't able to dodge it's way around Ben's attacks.  He smacked his daggers, one after the other, into the spider's carapace, taking off the last few slivers of it's health bar off.  The enemy flew back into the wall, and finally dissipated into a bunch of pixels upon impact.  It was dead.  It was also too low of a level to give Ben any sort of benefit.  He didn't get any loot, or items, or even any xp from that.  It was just a distraction that he had finally managed to deal with.

With the battle finished up, Ben started trying to catch his breath.  He didn't want to deal with battles while he was on this quest, and hadn't been ready for this one.  Luckily he hadn't lost any of his health with the fight, but it had made a lot of noise around the area.  He hoped that didn't mean that there were more spiders coming to check up on the area.  He was probably safe though, since spiders aren't really known for running around in groups.  Since he was near this one's hunting territory, there probably wasn't going to be more following up.  So, while he was still keeping his ears open for anything suspicious, he also leaned back against the wall to relax while he was there.  He had been walking and creeping through the forest for a while, and was getting tired.  A quick break felt really nice right now.

After a while, Ben felt a bit better.  He pulled a flask of water out of his pack to get a drink (he was glad he remembered to get one of those after the last few long quests he had done without any water one him- it wasn't a pleasant memory).  He then turned to the sides of the insect nest that he was in, and started looking for a good set of handholds he could use to pull himself out of there.  After a few minutes of looking around he did find a good spot, and sheathed his weapons so he could use both of his hands to climb.  He was a bit worried about being ambushed as he poked his head over the side, but if there were any monsters around they probably would have already jumped in to attack him.  So there probably wasn't anything up there just waiting for him.

Ben lifted himself over the edge of the hole, no trouble in sight.  The clearing he was in was the same as he left it, and there was no other monsters wandering in.  So that was a good thing, so far.  He still needed to find a new place to search, so he headed the opposite direction that he had come to the clearing from.  Maybe he would find something he missed last time.  So he walked back, around the giant spider webs and empty insect nests taunting him as he went.  The fog had at least gotten less thick- as it was want to do when he had already walked through the area- so he could see where he was going a lot easier.  Now he just had to figure out which way the insects in this area he run off to somehow, though at least he had checked one direction off of his choices, but there was still at least three other cardinal directions he could go, and not many clues to go on.

Ben looked around at his choices of where to go.  This mists of the forest blocking most of the sight lines made this decision a lot harder to figure out, and covered up most things that he could use as clues.  Or, he could think of it as making the decision easier.  He picked one of the directions he hadn't gone in, and started walking.  There was no sense in thinking too deeply about the decision if he couldn't find anything to help him make the decision.  Especially since he had enough time to check out the other choices if he came up empty the second time.  So, it was eastward he went (if you considered east to be the right side of the map in his HUD, which was a usual assumption, but not one he had ever looked into confirming).  He hoped that he would have better luck in this direction.

As Ben walked onward, the mists parting and giving him a view ahead as he went on, There wasn't much ahead for him to see that was worth noting- just more trees, scraggly bushes, and creepy looking webs all over the place.  This really was an unpleasant forest to walk through.  Still, he had a few good spots to look in up ahead.  A lot of the larger groups of trees would be good places for him to start to look, and maybe if he was lucky he could find a few different giant insects for him to choose from.  He just had to make sure there were no trapdoor spiders preparing some nasty surprises in the underbrush.  That first one that he had to fight was enough of a overly long and annoying distraction for him, and a second one would slow the quest down even more than it already had been.

Ben managed to get to the first large outcropping of trees without any hassles.  There wasn't any patrolling monsters in sight, lucky for him.  Having to sit and wait while another group of dark elves or a giant spider wandered by on whatever business it had elsewhere in the forest would be a pain.  He just wanted to get in there and start looking, if at all possible.  All this running around the forest, finding the perfect familiar to tame, as much as it was going to be worth it in the long run, even if it was running him ragged in the present.  He hoped that it would be worth it, at least.  He hadn't met anyone else who had gotten a familiar for crafting, and he hoped that it worked as he heard it did.  He didn't have an FAQ to reference, so it could do something other than what he expected.

Ben pushed some of the branches out of the way as he forged his way into the trees.  He went slowly and carefully since there might be a nest anywhere, and stepping into it (or falling into one) would probably not make a good first impression on his new friend.  So he had to lean down, getting onto his hands and knees to crawl through the junk.  After a quick thought, he pulled out some of the snack food that he had brought for this purpose.  He hoped the salad leaves were something that they would like.  Or at least something they would like more than the wet junk they had around here.

After a few minutes of crawling around (and getting his scarf super dirty, which he should have thought of beforehand) in the woods for a while, he eventually saw a small nest up ahead that might have something in it.  Holding out the food in front of him, he crawled forward to try and get a better look at what was there.

He actually got snagged on a few branches as he crawled in, which slowed he momentum down quite a bit.  He was most worried about getting his scarf torn up as he was moving around down here.  It was his favorite scarf, and he wasn't sure how hard it would be to get someone to repair it if he got it damaged.  Or, hopefully he wouldn't have to find out, what would happen if it got destroyed.  He had gotten it as one of his starting items, and he hadn't seen any shops that would be able to make another.  Or at least not without a huge waiting list.  Well, that was something to find out if he ever needed.  Or maybe sooner just to be safe.  But he had a caterpillar to go find, and plenty of time once he got back to town to figure out the answers to these fleeting thoughts.

A small pair of black eyes poked up from the nest as Ben got closer, letting out a curious cooing sound as it did.  It was a caterpillar- perfect!  He had finally found what he was looking for!  Ben stood as still as he could as it crept it's way out of the nest, tentatively sniffing at the food that was offered it.  It took a small nibble... but then moved in closer to Ben on it's own.  He was afraid the caterpillar was going to attack after a minute, but instead it reared up on it's back half and started trying to chew on one of his potion bottles.  It seemed this guy liked his work.

After waiting a few minutes for the little guy to satisfy himself on his potion vials, Ben slowly reached into his pack to pull out a few of the crafting leaves that he had picked up before.  The caterpillar made a beeline for them, crawling its way up Ben's leg and torso, ending up sitting on his shoulder while playing with the offering.  Well, I guess that means you and I are friends now, huh? Ben asked.  His new partner just gave a happy trill as a response, which was fine with him.

Ben crawled his way out of the bushes he was stuck in, his new friend still hanging out on his shoulder.  He gave the little guy a few more leaves as he pushed himself up to begin the walk home.  At least there wouldn't be much trouble now that his map showed the route out of the forest pretty clearly now.  So, I guess I'll have to name you now that you're going to be sticking around.  Something regal, and reliable.  How about... Sebastien?  You like that name?  Sebastien cooed happily at that.  OK, I guess you like it.  So, we are heading back to our new home then. I'll make you a nice little nest at our workshop, and be sure to feed you some tasty leftovers.  You just gotta help me find the good ones in the bunch, so we can make some good stuff for everyone.

Sebastien responded by starting to nestle into his scarf.  This looked to be the beginning of a cozy little friendship.
