His parents were both Law Enforcement Officers, as was his grandfather on both sides. He was destined to become a third generation Officer. He was a good officer too. One of the youngest members of S.W.A.T. the force had ever seen. But unlike many Officers that wasn't all he was. Enjoying books and role-playing games just as much as Serving and Protecting, he was considered strange by many of his co-workers. Life was good, until he got hurt. During a firefight with some gangbangers, he pushed his partner out of the way just as a car exploded. The explosion was unlike anything he had ever experienced. Bones broke, fire seared skin, then everything went black. He awoke in an hospital. Thanfully his body wasn't shattered and was already on the mend. The only thing that he truly loss was his right eye. The trauma was too sever. There was no saving it. Even though in under a year he was back into fighting shape, he was discharged from the force due to his eye. So when he heard about Sword Art Online, he jumped at the chance to play. He lucked into pulling security for a big unveiling ceremony in the States. It was there he got his chance to actually get the game and the NerveGear. Soon enough the day arrived. Just getting work, he was exhausted but there was no way he was missing out on launch day. Settling into his bed, he powered up the NerveGear. After a deep breath he nearly shouts the words "Link Start!" and slips into an adventure he never asked for. Virtues: Honor - Duncan has a particular sense of Honor. Being a Police officer has firmly ingrained a sense of right and wrong in him and by his own personal honor he will always do what is right. He holds himself to his honor, much like the Knights of the old stories. Courage - His life has been molded by his being a Police Officer. He was faced with dangerous situations, all of which he faced head on and without backing down. No matter the situation, Duncan never wavered. Selflessness - Courage under fire is one thing. Throwing yourself in front of the fire for your fellow man? That's something completely different. Something that Duncan didn't hesitate to do. Something that cost him his eye. Flaws: Honor- Double edged sword - While his honor is his virtue, it's just as much a flaw. He has landed himself in many adverse situations that could of been avoided, but refused to compromise his honor. Once challenged, he will fight to keep his honor no matter the stakes. Reckless - While being courageous is nice, add that with recklessness and you'll eventually find the sweet taste of death. Duncan has always been taught to think fast, hit first, hit hard. This is reflected in his day to day life in SAO. Vengeful - Being stuck in this death game has made him want to seek vengeance. Against it's creator and against those who would prey on the helpless. This vengeance drives him and sometimes clouds his better judgment.
