[F8-SP] Scrounging in the trees

Recommended Posts

Benjamin backed off into the woods a bit, searching along the sides of the thorny area that he had encountered.  It was big and full of tightly intertwined branches with lots of thorns to defend them, and likely way too thick for him to get through.  He decided that the best route for him right now was to go around the outside of it, seeing what was there to harvest, and hopefully encountering an entrance sooner or later.

He got a few promising bushes to search, adding another pinch of materials into his pack for later crafting with.  He was making some progress, and he had found something interesting for him to check out.  Maybe he would even find something inside of there that would be worth the extra effort he was making to find out.  Now though, he had to make sure he did not slack off on finding materials for crafting as he did so.

As he walked through the thick underbrush, trying to make his way through so that he could find some more materials for his crafting attempts.  It would be a bit harder than usual to keep himself close to the thorn brush, at least close enough that he could keep sight and not miss anything interesting in it that he would pass by.  It wouldn't do to just walk past the spot he had come out here to look for.  Still, with the thickness of the brush, it was getting harder and harder to both search and properly keep his eyes on the place he was looking at.  So, he stopped going out of the way to find some searching areas, and concentrated on moving for now.  He would find some good spots for searching later on, and for now just wanted to get out of this spot and to some areas he could more easily search through.

Benjamin continued his search, trying to keep himself steady enough to not knock his familiar off of his shoulder again.  Having him growl more about his movements wouldn't make things any easier.  For now, he stuck to the bushes on the side areas where he was walking, hoping to grab a good haul out of them.  It seemed that his bad luck was continuing though, as he was not getting a single stash out of the places that he was looking in.  He really hoped that looping around this area would pan out in the end for him, because right now he was not having any luck at all with refilling his supplies.  If this kept up, he would be out here all day and have barely anything to show for it.  Well, at least Sebastian would be happy for the fresh air and the walk, even if he didn't actually do any of the walking himself.

As he continued his long and boring march down the trail, hoping for some better luck in finding some good materials, and hoping for something even better.  He was getting tired of searching through so many bushes with nothing to show for it but wasted time and a bunch of scratches from and the nature he had to trudge through.  With a sigh, he got back to work, looking through one bush after another.  Only this time, he finally found a good stash of material in one of them.  He had to lean in carefully to grab it while not waking up his familiar, but the boost to his confidence was well worth it.  Sometimes it just took a bit of success one time or another to help you get through the long searches out in the woods.  Now, it was forward march to find some more stashes like this one!

Benjamin had been checking his messages a few times while he was walking.  He still had a few orders out, and was waiting on players to pick them up.  Some days it seemed that half of his time was spent waiting for others to come buy his wares.  But, he had more important things to focus on for the time being- such as finding some more crafting items.

For now, he crept forward to start looking for something else to search in.  The bushes around here were unfortunately full of a lot of thorns and debris, which made it a lot harder for him to try any type of searching.  He decided that it would be better to just keep going for a while before trying.  He was not going to have as many materials as he wanted by the end of this, but that would be fine, really. At least in the long run.

As he crept on forward, he kept on bumping into all of the thorny areas that he had been trying to avoid.  It was extremely frustrating to not be able to get anything at all to add to his supplies, but he had to keep moving forward.  Sebastian woke up while he was slipping around the more dangerous areas, and took a look around at what was going on.  He decided that it was time for him to stay awake, and seemed to want to help out and give directions as he went.  It mostly just turned into him crooning into Ben's ear as he tried to concentrate, which was less than helpful.  But very cute, so it was helpful in a way.  He had to admit he was glad to have the company around, and that it was much better than running around here alone. Ben gave him a scratch on his head for his help.

Benjamin finally made it would of the bunches of thorns that had been in his way for a while.  Now, he was reaching some easily searchable bushes to check out, and getting a few bits and pieces to toss into his pack.  And now that things were back to normal, Sebastian let out a big yawn, and he started to curl his way back into Ben's scarf for another nap.  Ben gave him one last pat on the head as he crawled back in- he needed his rest.  I suppose.

Ben counted the amount of materials he had gathered so far - it was barely enough to last four days of crafting so far, which was much less than he wanted.  Perhaps he would settle for this so far, then work on searching some other floors next and hope that he had better luck.  It would have to be better than banging his head against the wall here.

With Sebastian back to his napping spot, Ben was free to continue on his way with his gathering.  There were some easily reachable bushes in the area that he could grab, and they had exactly the kinds of results that he was looking for.  After bending down and emptying them out, he had found that he added a few more parts into his inventory once more.  Maybe his luck was finally going to be turning around now that he was through the less plentiful parts of this floor.  After all of the crafting that he had done this week, it would be a welcome addition.  There were others who needed items made for them, and if it kept up like this he would have a lot of other orders coming in soon enough.  Now he just had to finish gathering up what materials he could from here, and see what was up with the big bunch of thorn bushes he was following.

As he moved along, Ben got himself closer and closer to the main parts of the thorns.  He had started running out of good bushes to search as he moved along.  The ones he did see were thorny enough that he did not want to even try to check them- the bushes in this area were tough to grab anything out of, and it was enough of a pain that he did not want to deal with it.  Or risk his familiar waking up and being angry when he twisted his way into the bushes to look.  As he moved along, he began transferring a few more of the materials from his pack into his inventory so he could free up some space for later.  It was getting full again, and he was hoping to find a few extra patches on the way back to fill it up again in.

As Benjamin moved through the brush, he decided it was time to take a turn and try to find a way towards the center of the thorny brush that might have something good in it.  The problem was that the walk would get his familiar a bit rattled.  So, Ben decided to stop and take care of that first.  He hoisted Sebastian out of his scarf, listening to his complaints as he was moved from his favorite spot, and put him safely into his pouch for the time being.  Now remember, don't eat any of the things in here with you.  I have gone to a lot of work to collect them, and they're not snacks.  OK?  With a sigh, he told his little worm this, not really expecting that he would listen completely, but hoping that he was too sleepy to actually do anything that would damage his items in the bag.

As Ben made his way forward, his excitement building with all the work that he had put into the search, he managed to stick his head into the area past all the thorns that was blocked off.  And it was... a few plant monsters in the distance.  He didn't have any reason to go in there and start a fight, so as it turned out this whole walk about was a huge waste of time.  And now he had to start heading back to town and back to his usual route once more.  As he pulled himself away from the thorn bushes, he picked Sebastian back out of his pack.  Well, that was a huge waste of time, wasn't it?  How about you head back into my scarf for now and I'll start our walk on the way back, OK?  Sebastian gave a disgruntled noise as he settled back in, ready for the rest of the trip.

Ben popped open his HUD, looking at the map he had of the area.  He needed a new route back to town, and he did not really know this part of the forest well.  After a few minutes of looking around, he found a path that would probably get him back without much trouble.  It even connected up to a small foot path that would go for a large amount of the way to town, hopefully keeping the rest of the trip smooth.  Unfortunately, there wasn't any good places for him to search on the way past the thorns once again.

He gave another long and heavy sigh as he walked on.  He was still not finding anything good from his searching once again.  Well, at least it couldn't get too much worse than it was now with his luck.  Maybe he could at least find some treasure chest or another big bunch of loot on the way back that would make up for all this.

Benjamin was nearing the path that would lead him through the forest and back towards the town he started from.  It looked like the surroundings were starting to become more and more like the usual trees that he was used to as he walked on back.  There were going to be plenty of berries and leaves to check, and quite a few bushes to sift through.  Ben took a deep breath of fresh air in as he searched- it was one of the few times he was able to deal with this much nature without his allergies acting up so bad that he couldn't breathe.   It was kind of enjoyable to be out here without it, after all.  But he had to stay on his objective- he was here to keep on searching, not look at the beautiful scenery.  Still, he did stop to admire the area for a little bit, absently giving his familiar a few scratches on the head as he did so.

  • 2 weeks later...

The day had been getting late as he moved along- he had been gathering all afternoon, and had to eventually get back to his shop for some actual crafting soon.  Orders would pile up if he didn't, though he did love it that players were beginning o take notice of his little lab and its works.  Still, it would be nice to be able to do more.  A few upgrades, a couple more rooms to spread out, and maybe a nice bedroom to relax in after a hard day.  It was a nice goal for him to work up to... though it would also mean he needed to get a lot more materials into his lab.  It was going to be a hard fought battle to keep churning out what he needed, even if players began to start to pay him in materials for the jobs.  Which was something he did like a lot.

Ben checked on the bushes along the path, picking out the best of the berries that he could find from each of them.  Even with the sun starting to set, he still had a large amount of bushes that he could be able to shift through before he had to turn in.  And as long as he kept on moving forward, he would be able to harvest a good bunch from these berry bushes before he got back home.  The next few bushes he started to look at, thankfully, were full of some good finds.  Ben grabs them and started stuffing his bag full of some more.  At least with the nice, clear path on the way home, he would be able to check each of the bushes at his leisure and likely be able to start grabbing some (hopefully really good) bunches from them.  HE kept moving, scratching at his little familiar as he went.

Benjamin kept on the path home, his spirits lifting a bit as he checked each of the bushes on the path, getting more and more materials as he went along.  Well Sebastian, it looks like we are going to be getting enough stuff to be crafting for a while.  I know how much you like to nibble on the leftovers once I'm done with them.  And your food bowl has been pretty low the past few days.  he told to his familiar, watching his eager eyes light up as he heard the news.  As big of a pain the little worm could be, it was a joy to see his happy face when it was time to play.  He grabbed a few of the less useful bits to use as snacks, both of them munching away as they searched along.  It was going to be a good day if this luck kept on up.

So Sebastian, I guess there's another quest happening that will allow us to get more materials when we search.  We have to get a few extra materials to craft with... especially the big tier three ones that would be good for selling.  It seems like we would get a better price from those ones if we sell them to the front liners.  Or at least that's my hope.  It would be nice to finally have enough col to start to upgrade our house a bit more.  he said as he gave Sebastian another berry and a scratch on the head.  His luck had still been holding strong, and his basket was filling up with a good amount of items.  It was getting pretty close to the end of the walk, and he would have to get back to work pretty soon.  His orders would be stacking up soon at this rate, and he would really need to get started to begin to make a dent in this pile he was bringing in.

Benjamin kept on moving along the trail, grabbing a few more berries from each bush as he went along. He was having a blast with his big string of luck, and was finding his bag getting more and more full as he went.  All right Sebastian, I'm going to stop here for a minute.  My bag's getting a bit full again, so now I need to transfer some of these to my inventory. he told his familiar.  He then opened up his HUD, pulling the items into his inventory along with the rest of the materials he had in there.  By now, he had enough to last most of a week of crafting, as long as he wasn't going to be using them to start making more crystals.  But since there was not much of a reason for him to do so, unless he was going to be making attack crystals, that would not be a problem for now.

Ben made his way down the path, spying the town he was heading back to in the distance.  He was getting a bit tired- he probably got some good exercise in today.  Or he would have if this were real life.  Working out in the game probably didn't do anything for his body back home.  Or at least he thought it didn't, nobody seemed to know very much about it.  I guess I'll just chalk that up as one more thing about this game that we don't have a clue about, and put it with all the others.  He sighed as he walked on, trying to shake the dark thoughts out of his head.  It was a nice day, and he had gotten tons of loot for later.  This wasn't the time to be sad or moody.  Besides, he could still pick up a lot more mats before he got back to his lab.  More would be good.

Ben popped open his HUD, looking at the orders that were going to be waiting for him when he got back.  It was starting to pile up, though he found a lot of players who messaged him just stopped responding when they heard the price- any price really.  Maybe they were expecting it to be free to get new items?  Or maybe they just didn't want to go forward when prices were talked about at all.  Well, he still had to stock his shop even if nobody else was going to special order things.  He sighed as he began to organize things, his mind wandering to the future as he walked.  He realized he should have been checking more of the brush as he went, but sometimes you just had to get things organized.  It really helped out when he was in a rush to get orders out, and didn't have time to check on much else.
