Summary:

Mining is the life and blood of Tomoika, and should it cease, the town would surely perish. The settlement is now in danger of that happening. The dark mines have become much more treacherous to travel. Rumors of dragons invading the caverns had brought mining down to a halt. You've been hired to enter the mines to confirm these rumors and clear out anything that isn't human. You've been told that for each skin you bring, you'll be paid handsomely.

The next boss fight was drawing ever closer, and if Shield was to be perfectly honest with himself, he was not satisfied with his build. He needed to scrape more experience, and to do so, he would need a reliable DPS and a worthy quest. The quest was no problem. There were still a number of them on the back burner that he had yet to take with the newest floors now available. That, however, did nothing to solve his other problem.

"I still need some damage," he said to himself, furrowing his brows as he sat at his kitchen table. "Beat is still off doing... whatever Beat does. However..." he thought to himself a moment. He had just recently reconnected with another worthwhile DPS player who was more than trustworthy. He popped open a message window, composing a correspondence.

'Baldur,

Thought you might want to join me for some adventuring up on the twenty first floor. Sounds like there are some drakelings that we can clear out for a little bonus experience and cash. Interested?

-Shield'

With that, he took the steak he had been marinating out of the pot and proceeded to wolf it down as quickly as he could while still being as hot as it was.

Thank goodness there's no actual pain here.

He washed it down with a potion and made his way out the door towards Taft.

Baldur had just seen Shield earlier that day to buy some tea to feed his addiction, when he got another message from the super-human tank. A request to go and grind out another quest and get some last minute EXP before the boss fight. It was definitely something Baldur needed. He was impressed, however, that Shield felt the same need. The tank had grown by leaps and bounds since the first time Baldur had interacted with him. It seemed the course of his life here in Aincrad, that he would help newbies at the start of their journey, and then be amazed at their rapid growth to become one of the top players. He still often spoke about the day Calrex came in for healing potoins. He gave the ultramarine knight a free one just in case, and it was the potion that saved his life. He had done no such thing for Shield, but the man had become a juggernaut of industry and the front line.

Shield: > OMW

Standing up from his spot beside the fountain, Baldur left to join the tank in Taft.

Baldur found Shield already waiting for him when he approached, giving them man a slight bow of the head in respect. The gaijin samurai was wearing his new full set of Tier 3 equipment, the most noticable difference being his armor. It felt good to be more 'caught up' though he needed to finish gathering his slew of weapons. At the moment, he only had the Muramasa and the Shukketsu, though he knew Shield didn't like the paralysis style that Baldur normally employed for safety. Shield simply didn't need it.

"Ohayo, my friend. How are you?"

Baldur took out a cup of Spot-On tea and began sipping on it as they stood there.

Shield inclined his head to return the greeting. "Ohayogozaimasu," he answered in kind. "I think you know the time crunch we're under, so we can exchange pleasantries on the way." As usual, his manner was not gruff, but very matter of fact. If one did not know him, it might come across as rather terse and unwelcoming, and perhaps to a degree it was, but practicality ruled Shield's world. "I have given some thought to our plans," he said, gesturing toward the teleportation plaza. "I still feel the need to meet with Zandra personally before deciding, however, I happen to have met a lower level player who is focused on healing. We can always train him up and see how he does, but that's a distant future solution. There is another solution worth mentioning, though I like it less. We will discuss that later."

Shield stepped into the familiar array, calling out the intended destination. "Tomoika." The twenty first floor's main settlement materialized around him, taking shape from the digital display of the warp animation. He stepped out and pulled up a map, walking briskly in the direction his broker had directed him. "In the mean time, our destination is to hunt drakelings. We need to kill a minimum of 10, but by harvesting their hides, we can net extra money, plus the experience that comes from the fights in the first place. I should be well equipped to keep you fresh as long as necessary, but that depends somewhat on our luck."

He led them down the rope bridge paths toward the mines, following the cursor on his screen to direct them towards their supposed destination. "People theorize that the drakelings are somehow connected to Tesseleth, some even suspecting them of being the dragon's offspring, but I doubt that," he continued, leading them down a spiraling stair that took them to the next floor down in the mines. "Drakes and dragons are very much different creatures, though that may just be a mistake on the part of the prog-"

A burst of flame shot past Shield. He was going to have to continue his speculations later. Two red-scaled creatures swept through the mine shaft, barreling at the players. Shield took a deep breath, filling his lungs with a less potent but equally effective weapon. "Come and get it, you overgrown chickens!" he called out, buffeting the winged hatchlings about and momentarily pinning them to the wall. They took his invitation very seriously, gaping their mouths. At the backs of their throats, red glows lit, forming into balls which spurted out and washed over both players. Shield lifted his trusty Manticore Mask shield, blocking the worst of it, but still took a slight hit to his health, while Baldur seemed uncathed altogether. "This shouldn't be too rough," he growled, keeping his eyes forward over the top of his leonine barrier.

Baldur's interest was peaked when Shield mentioned he had found a perspective new frontliner that they could help train and groom.

"I think working on relations with Zandra will be good regardless, but I really like this idea of finding an up-and-coming player who we can supplement the front lines with. It looks like 4 teams might become the standard, so it would help to have another healer along, and let Hestia be primarily a tank, rather than jerking her back and forth. The more stable the teams can be, the better."

It was shortly thereafter that suddenly fireballs were being lobbed at them. Thankfully, Baldur's lightweight armor and mobility meant that he was able to respond quickly and get out of the way of the fire before it caught him, but Shield wasn't quite so lucky. After waiting a heartbeat for the tank to taunt them, Baldur activated his sword art, charging his best AoE attack and launching forward at the drakes. Unfortunately, one of the drakes was just out of the range of his AoE attack and got off scott free, but his attack that did land knocked the drake straight into yellow.

"No, if I can land my charged attack, I think we can plow through these pretty quickly."

"Don't mind! On it!" Shield focused his attention on the first drakeling, which had been just lucky enough to escape the samurai's blade. Shield held out his sword, preparing to counterattack once the little firebreather decided to strike. He was not disappointed. It lunged forward, its mouth open and lips curled back to expose vicious fangs. Shield plunged his sword straight down the thing's gullet, so far in fact that its jaws still clamped shut around Shield's hand. It hung on, screeching through gritted teeth and flailing at the pain in its stomach.

The other, already below half health from Baldur's strike, raked at Shield's back, but let out a cry of pain and flapped back a few feet, its flaws now charred and scratched with angry glowing marks. Shield exhaled, turning his eyes back to the drake on his arm. Beside its health bar, he saw a small icon appear. "It took my armor's venom. Think you can get it down to near death in one hit?" he called out behind him, eyes still darting between their foes.

Baldur watched as Shield tried on a Drakeling gauntlet, the one that had gotten away from him, and smiled at Shield's request for an assist. Baldur took careful aim, an the unleashed his San Ge, curbing the movements of the sword art just so that he was able to tag the creature without cutting into the tank's arm. It had been a long time since he had practiced a strike like that, but his restraint was measurable as he had just basely left it with a sliver of health bar left.

"Damn! Not quite enough, but I think it bit off more than it could chew going for you." Baldur gave a slight chuckle. It was clear they weren't in any danger, nor did he ever think they were with him an Shield. Shield could heal himself, and he was more hedgehog than man. And Baldur always had the safety net of knowing that he had AoE healing crystals which could be activated in an instant should anything go downhill.

"Alright, let's get one of these rare tank kills. I think there's more on their way."

Baldur turned away from shield where he saw more drakes that seemed to be flying towards them.

The venom of Shield's armor bled the first drakeling of the last of its health, and with a sound of shattering glass, its body burst into shards of light. The second, seeing how quickly its companion had died, put on air brakes, flapping furiously to stop its flight and pull higher into the air, flapping angrily and screeching like a banshee. Shield cursed under his breath, but there was nothing he could do if the creature would not attack.

He instead held out his blade, letting it amass energy as he focused on the tip. A small bead of light formed, growing as more motes of light gathered in its center until it had reached the size of Shield's palm. He flicked his sword and sent the energy towards Baldur, replenishing his stores a little. "Nothing I can do from here. Take this for now. We might be here a while..."

Baldur lashed out at the last drakling, trying to intercept it before it got to Shield, but the creature suddenly put on air breaks and flapped backwards in retreat as the multiple arcs of light from Baldur's sword cut through the space it had been heading, but just out of range of the final creature.

"Oh come on!" Baldur grumbled as he was stuck in the combat animation of the sword art as it ran its course without a target. Moments like this tended to be flukes, but it was no less annoying.

"Sorry man, looks like you're gonna have to give this one the thorn."

As the sword art ended, Baldur was free to move again. Neither he nor Shield had been hurt, other than his pride. He hated missing, and it happened rarely, but he still needed to take steps to minimize this as much as humanly possible.

The drakeling, still flustered at seeing its clutchmate shattered midair, continued to flap about the ceiling, squawking up a storm. On occasion, it would make a half-hearted attempt to swipe at Shield with its claws, but it was still too far away to actually connect with any of these attacks. Shield sighed. "I mean, I want to..." he replied to Baldur's imperative. "The drakeling has other plans though."

Using the continued lull, he charged up another ball of energy and tossed it over to Baldur. His eyes followed their adversary, but it was no use. For now, at least, the scaly little menace seemed to have no intention of coming down. "I don't know that I can get up there to do much, and even if I did, it would likely run away from me before I could. This is gonna take the lightning reflexes and precision of a DPS, I'm afraid."

<<Tsuji Kaze>> finally made short work of the final drake, the drawing strike cutting it cleanly in two once Baldur had managed to target it. He always hated missing with fiery passion, it bothered him more than anything else, but then, his damage was finally at a point where he didn't have to work much about not doing damage. Outside of a boss fight, or a PVP fight, it was unlikely he wouldn't at least hurt something. It was his competitive streak. He didn't mind losing, but he hated not performing well, and he always felt like a miss was due to him failing his obligation. It wasn't as much of an issue when he was by himself, but when he was in a team, it was his job to at least hit it.

"Alright, let's see if we can't refine that process to be a little better. I think I'll stick to single attacks. I think with a charge I'll be able to one shot them."

Shield nodded. From the looks of things, a single hit AoE wasn't a likely kill, so the single shot might as well be their backup plan. He turned his head, hearing the approach of more wings. Sure enough as he did so, two bursts of flame engulfed him, and he saw his hit points take a dip down from full. It was sudden, but it was not enough to worry him just yet. He had taken many hits far worse. Besides, they only seemed to hit once with their flame attack, or at least so far.

"New arrivals!" he called out, as if it wasn't already obvious. He filled his lungs, squaring up with the beasts and projecting his voice in their faces. "Your brethren have proved to be entirely inconsequential! Show me what you're worth, if you think you're any better!" If scales could bristle, that is what the drakelings' did. It was like watching the hackles of a threatened wolf.

Again, new drakes fired searing hot balls of flame at them, exploding about them, but Baldur's agility allowed him to leap high above the flames, hanging in the air long enough for the fire to clear before he landed from the back flip. It had given him some distance from Shield, and so he crouched low again, holding his katana down at his side against his says as he charged up another <<San Ge>>. He targeted the closer drake, and waited until it had finished sweeping down and closing on Shield. Once it's movement had paused, Baldur released the sword art and exploded forward in a rush of blue and orange.

The azure bands of color following his sword were the only movements that could be seen as his sword flashed out and struck the Drake several times, tearing the wings from it's small body and exposing the red wire mesh of its 3d model.

"Not quite enough." Baldur frowned. They just barely had any life left. "Just a hair short. Hopefully you can get them with your thorns."

Shield watched as the health of the first drake plummeted, halting just short of death. "Ain't that just the way it goes," he sighed. He held out his blade, charging up a fresh batch of energy for Baldur. Maintaining DPS was an incredible drain on resources, so as much as Shield could assist, he did. "It's a little odd tanking for a katana wielder. The energy output is a little different." The sphere of energy at his blade's tip reached completion, and with a flick of his wrist, he sent the mass towards Baldur.

The drakes, neither proving as cowardly as the last had been, screeched down out of the air at Shield. He managed to intercept one with his shield, catching it with the full force of his thorned defense. However, the other slipped past the barrier, slashing him across the stomach. This did not prove as safe of a move for the drake as might normally be. The winged lizard reeled, scratching at its own claws which were glowing with a sickly green light. "Looks like the venom hit that one. He'll be dead very shortly no matter what, but hopefully we'll be able to take care of him before then!"

Baldur turned from the Drake he had attacked before, since it was so close to dead it would hopefully impale itself on Shield's... shield. He focused his eyes on the fourth one now, and the red crystal of a mob appeared above it. It was a more faint red, almost pink, because it's level was lower than Baldur's and it didn't really represent a threat to either of them. He unleashed another <<charge>> and <<San Ge>> on the wounded one, and was able to finish it off with a satisfying sound of shattering glass and rainbow colored polygons. The sound effect was music to his wounded ego at not being able to finish off the earlier drake.

"That's more like it. Now then, Let's see if we can't start building up some rhythm."

There were more on the horizon on their way to attack them, but they kept coming in pairs. If only they would come in larger flocks. Or wings.

What do you call a group of Drakes? I like the sound of wings. 'A wing of drakes.'

Whatever they were called, he and Shield still needed to get rid of this pesky living one before the others got there. They would attack with more fire, but Shield seemed to be able to heal himself up from the damage before the next group spawned.

With the next pair of drakes hanging back, waiting for the current battle to end, Shield decided to try to end it early. He poised his blade, preparing a counter strike. As the drake came in, he caught the incoming bite with his sword, rending all the way down the drake's side to the tip of its tail. There was a brief moment where it soared past him, its side opened wide and glowing an angry red from the wound, before the entire thing shattered. A leathery pelt dropped onto the ground which Shield quickly scooped up.

"Number three!" he whooped. "Let's keep 'em coming!" Seeing the end of their friend, the next pair of drakelings dropped in, circling around the players in a would-be menacing manner. "Aww... they think they're fierce. Baldur, why don't we put the fear of god into one of them and a world of hurt into the other?"

Baldur smiled as Shield took down another drake and found another skin as well.

"Nice job. Let's see if I can't do mine a little better." Once more Baldur crouched down into what was quickly recognizable as his <<charge>> stance to activate his <<San Ge>> attack. The azure blands of light that followed his black and red katana tore into the drake. It's hp dropped... and dropped.... and dropped into the red... and then without any visible HP left, the drake endured.

"I cannot tell you how upset I am right now Shield. I really have no words."

The samurai flicked his sword off to the size facing the other drake with more than a little visible annoyance in his body language.

"It should die of the bleed effect, but still. That's just... I can't tell you how frustrating that is. It's gotta have like... only single digit health left.

"I wouldn't worry too much," Shield said, pointing ahead of them.

He watched as the drake that Baldur had struck seized up and shattered, dissipating in a storm of polygons. As it did so, Shield felt the telltale sensation of needles piercing his neck. The other drake had latched onto his back, sinking its razor sharp fangs into his skin. It screeched, spitting and hissing at Shield as it flapped away, a fresh Envenom icon displayed beside its monster tag.

Shield bent down and scraped up a scrap of skin that had been left behind after the other drake's death, banishing it quickly to his inventory. Beyond the sphere of their fight, more wings drew near, their loud flapping creating even further chaos in the echoing mineshaft. "I feel like this is an infinite grind quest. I'm down to push through it to try to grind out some extra experience if you are!"

"After this drake, let me change out my load. This is pissing me off so much, I'm going to drag out the <<Muramasa>>. I usually try to avoid using it for quests, but in this case I'm doing it for my own sanity."

Baldur took aim at the last drake and focused on it with his steel blue eyes, selecting it as the target of his next attack, a <<Charge>> <<San Ge>>.

He streaked across Shield's field of vision as a blue and orange flash of color as he launched into his attack with determination, but his timing was misjudged, and instead his sword art slashed at the air just below the drake, the height of the flying wyrmling just out of reach of Baldur's katana.

"Damn it. These things are really pissing me off!" Baldur vented his frustration and then just had to chuckle. They were in no danger, but he felt like he was playing wiffle-ball with a toddler when it came to these bats. They were just unpredictable and didn't follow the normal rules of combat.

"Let's kill this thing so I can take this fight seriously."

Shield gave Baldur a nod, turning his attention back to the scales and teeth in front of him. A new drakeling had just joined the fray, filling the hole that its fallen companion had once occupied. He took in a sharp inhale of breath, pressuring his chest and focusing a torrent of sound and air plastered the newcomer against the wall. "Don't get too comfortable, you sack of scales and bones! Between my thorns and the Muramasa, you're in a lot of trouble!"

The beast responded in kind, opening up its maw to unleash a storm of fire, screeching out in rage at having been bested so early in its fight. The flames licked at Shield's body, ignoring his armor, but still unable to put a significant dent in his considerable pool of hit points. Baldur, on the other hand, had avoided the blast altogether. In the chaosThe other drake swooped in, hoping to catch Shield off guard, but as it bit into his arm, its health dropped dramatically, and it flapped away, crying and sputtering in confusion.

"You do what makes sense for you, Baldur," Shield called out over the din. "I trust your judgment."

Baldur leapt away as another ball of fire came roaring in their direction, the edges of his hoari coat almost being singed in the flames. As his whirled away from it, his boots skidding on the loose rock of the mine floor eventually came to a stop. Opening his menu, Baldur began to trade out his items, and switched his sword to the legendary <<Muramasa>> blade. He hated to try and do this during the fight, but it was that or wait until they didn't have any enemies left anyways, and Shield was not in danger of being taken down.

Finally hitting the accept button on his equipment change, the sword disappeared from his hands, and the <<Muramasa>> appeared at his hip in its place.

"Alright Shield, I've switched blades. I'm going to use this rare damage potion as well, and then I should be able to AoE the Drakes down."

Baldur then began to reach back into his battle-ready inventory for the potion he should have used from the start.
