Shield heard Baldur's words, running a quick analysis in his head. He glanced at the other player and the remaining drake as he thought through their options.

If he's not going to be ready to attack for a moment longer, and if my Sharpness mod isn't ready yet... I might as well boost my energy pool a little.

He slid his sword through the strap of his Manticore Mask before pressing his palms together and bowing his head. His body lit up with a pale blue light that danced around him like a smoky flame. It licked at his frame, and as it did, his energy bar spiked, recovering a healthy chunk of its length. The drakelings took advantage of his opening, shrieking out in triumph as they cut through his body with their clawed appendages. However, their cals turned to anger as their health gauges both plummeted. A tiny bit of progress was lost from Shield's recovery, but not enough to matter much.

He opened his eyes again and let out a calm breath. "Considering how long I've had that skill, it's a little odd that it's taken me so long to use it. It seemed like we might be here a while though, so it seemed prudent."

Baldur quickly pulled the bottle out of his inventory and drank it. The fluid tingled slightly as the game simulated the act of swallowing something tart, and then the icon appeared in the corner of his vision, indicating that he had received his damage buff. It wasn't big, but it should hopefully be enough.

"Alright, that should do the trick. Sorry about the down time, but this should let me start one-shotting these freaking annoyances."

Assuming I can hit them.

They weren't as annoying as the bat people that Baldur had fought with Hestia and Calrex, but it was close.

Turning back to the drakes, Baldur lowered his blade and readied his sword art <<San Ge>> and prepared to charge the weapon. He would go for the Drake that had the highest health, assuming they didn't kill themselves on Shield's armor before then. But if they were gonna farm these things for SP, then he might as well go all the way.

The drakelings landed on Shield, scurrying around, biting and scratching everything they could get their little claws and jaws onto. He sighed, turning to Baldur. "No no, it's fine. No rush here," he drawled, one by one peeling the little winged pests off of him and tossing them to the ground. They scrambled back to their feet and flapped their way into the air. From deep in their throats, Shield thought he made out a slight glow of red light.

"Whatever you're doing, you may want to do it sooner rather than later," he urged. "Not that I can't survive a little heat, but it's still not exactly pleasant to be blinded by hot air. Kinda chokes you and sucks the air out of your lungs." He raised his shield, preparing to defend one way or the other. "This fight is just the perfect blend of frustrating and irritating. It's a good thing we were only planning to have to fight about a billion of the little bastards." His eyes remained forward, and he braced himself. Behind these drakelings, more were beginning to gather. One way or the other, it seemed he was going to be taking a few belliesful of fire. It just depended from which lizards it would come.

Baldur's eyes shifted from the potion he had just drank, and back up to the drakes that Shield was fighting. Throwing the bottle aside so it would shatter into polygons before it hit the ground, Baldur grabbed the <<Muramasa>> and quickly unleashed his best AoE sword art, <<Amatsu no Homura>> and suddenly became a blurr of blue and orange as the system assist took control of his body, charging the drakes, and his slashed cleaving through their tiny forms even as they opened their jaws and glowed with the light of fire, prepared to try and blow Shield away once more.

It would have been a difficult slash, but with all of the buffs that Baldur had consumed by nwo, they were able to move quickly through them.

"Whew. Alright, sorry about the down time, but I think we're ready to really mow these things down now."

Baldur flicked the sword to the ground out of habit as if he were cleaning the blade of blood.

As Baldur mowed down the remaining drakelings, a fresh pair appeared in their place, their mouths gaping, spewing the same fire attack that those before them had died attempting. Their attacks scorched right past Baldur, billowing through the air like great fans of heat. They flames licked at Shield's body like hellish tongues, and his health dipped a god chunk. However, with his healer familiar on standby and his battle healing functioning as well as it ever had, he was hardly worried about a little extra damage.

"Heads up, Baldur!" he said, swinging his arm out to charge up another energy sphere. Once completed, he swung forward, sending the orb to collide with the samurai's back. "If you're going to be chopping through them at maximum efficiency, then you'll need a little something to keep you swinging!" He checked the inventory briefly and compared it to the information he had gathered, keeping mental tally of their spoils thus far. "Looks like we're most of the way to the bare minimum for the quest, but brokers have said that returning more skins nets us enough to make the fight worth continuing. As long as you've got energy, I say keep using it!"

Baldur had miscalculated once again. His single target sword arts would chew through these things, but his AoE was not enough to one shot them, even with a slightly buffed Muramasa. His damage just wasn't high enough with an AoE. He enjoyed having a decent AoE attack compared to most others, but thinking back to his time with Calrex and Hestia, the AoE of Axe was just incomparable to his. Still, Shield had a better luck attribute, so if Shield's thorns or vengeful riposte could take them out, they had a better chance ot getting what they were after.

Still, Baldur hated not just killing them. Perhaps he would switch to single targets after this, then at least they could keep moving through them. They would have to see how this round went. The Drakes should attack the tank, and with luck, die against his shield and armor's thorny attacks.

Although the drakes did not drop, they were close. Shield switched in, pivoting around the front of Baldur to cover his front and raising his shield. He took in a deep breath, putting power and energy behind his voice as he howled point blank at the drakelings. "Don't get too comfortable! You won't last long!" he shouted, his voice blasting in the little foes' faces and sending them tumbling back. "If they didn't deteriorate when they died, there would already be quite a little pile here to mark the deaths of those that came before you!"

The drakes retaliated, swooping in after Shield and slashing at him with the foreclaws at the joint of their wings, raking at his body and then flinching back. They squawked in pain, once again having to recover themselves as they attempted to both fly back and simultaneously nurse their scratched and burned wings. "You know, I know it's pointless to taunt lifeless enemies like this, but for some reason it just makes howling so much more fun when you can say something to verbally sting them a bit."

Baldur breathed a sigh of relief as Shield seemed to have fun now that they were making progress again. His thorns had not been enough of a 1-2 punch to take out the drakes for any sort of farmable efficiency, but they would change it up with the next ones and see if it was any better. The AoE with two targets seemed to be the more energy efficient, but Baldur didn't like the way it felt. Next he would try to <<San Ge>> one of the drakes and drop it, so that at least they were killing things faster.

Perhaps it was just a psychological thing. Baldur was the kind of person who would rather have a trip take longer, but be moving the whole time, than take a quicker route where he had to sit in traffic for most of it. It may be the less efficient choice, but ultimately it was the one that would hold his attention better.

"Alright, let's draw in the next!"

As the next wave of drakelings arrived, a new plan began to formulate in Shield's mind. Both he and Baldur were burning through their energy stores at an alarming rate, and some of the actions he wondered were still necessary. "Baldur," he said, still thinking his words through even as he said them. "Since they launch their AoE every time they join the fight, in theory, my howling is unnecessary. If each time a new one arrives you allow it to AoE and then one shot it before it gets time to act again, in theory, I should never need to howl. You're not drawing fire from them unless you attack them each directly, and if you don't leave survivors, then I can focus on maintaining without spending energy drawing their attention."

It was sloppy, but in theory, it would work. The drakelings had yet to harm Baldur, and even if they managed a few lucky hits due to inattentiveness, Baldur was no pushover. He nodded to himself, satisfied with the concept. Holding out his sword arm, he charged up another orb of energy and tossed it to Baldur. The new drakelings were already clustering around Shield, and he prepared for their attacks. Flames raced around the Manticore Mask, but only some of them managed to damage Shield. None of it even reached Baldur. "You on board?"

Baldur considered Shields words and gave him a nod. They had yet to hurt him, and the only attack they were really getting was the opening salve. Not to mention, in the bizarre chance that Baldur should get low on health, then Shield would be able to taunt them off him before Baldur was capable of building enough threat without killing them. It just wasn't possible for their lives to be at risk. Especially since they appeared to refuse to attack Baldur and Shield in anything more than pairs.

"Sounds good to me!"

Whipping his sword around with so much practice, that the complex maneuver appeared nonchalant, Baldur activated his <<charge>> and <<San Ge>>, his forming almost seeming to disappear next to Shield and appear next to the drakes, when really he was just movement being unnaturally sudden due to the system assist moving him at inhuman speed, and Baldur having mastered the pre-motion for each of his sword arts. As it ended with an overhead chop through their tenth drake, it ended with a satisfying shatter of the monster's 3d form, and a rain of luminescent polygons.

"Damn... that just feels so much better."

There was a certain amount of satisfaction to be had in seeing a mob on such a high floor drop in a single hit. However, it was not as satisfying as only having to take one fireball to the face. The newest arrival shrieked and blasted a hot wave of fire at him, taking another unmitigated chunk of his health, as well as causing him to momentarily choke. "I guess with our staggered strategy, that's just going to be happening as quickly as you mow them down, huh?" he half coughed, half chuckled.

The less recent of the two drakelings missed Shield entirely, its claws skating off of his shield and off into the air as it swooped by. "Since you're dropping things in one hit, do we want to focus your attacks on fresh mobs rather than anything that took damage from my thorns? If we do things that way, it should in theory be faster, since you won't be wasting damage, and even on a turn where you kill something, my thorns could in theory kill something else and get us one kill closer to our end goal."

"I like this plan." Baldur said as he ducked under another fireball, while at the same time making his way closer to the next Drake so that he could use his sword art. Spinning as he moved, Baldured haori flared around him, the flames on the hem seeming to come alive as they billowed with movement, until they could no longer be seen. When Baldur activated his <<San Ge>> the Samurai's movement ceased to be perceptible, as the blue and orange streak darted around the drake in circles, slashing it from each side faster than the eye could keep up, and finishing with a chop that seemed to pause time as the crimson arc of light bisected the creature, both hanging in the air for a moment until the shattering sound of glass was followed by luminous polygons floating through the air.

Baldur whipped the sword to the side as his steel blue eyes surveyed the fight around them.

"One more until we finally get something worthwhile out of this thing."

With the game plan set, Shield checked the energy stores once again. Both were still above half, but he needed to stay on top of it if they were going to reach their goal in one push. He took a breath and pressed the fist of his sword hand into the palm of his shield hand. A new drake arrived and blasted fire in his face, and the old one managed to slash him across the face with its foreclaw, both of which were just enough of a distraction to throw off his concentration, but still, by the time he opened his eyes, he was a little more energized than he had been.

On the other hand, as he was assessing his energy, he noticed that his health had continued to decline, and his battle healing was just low enough that it wasn't keeping up. "Lilith," he hissed down towards his collar. A little multicolored head popped out of his armor, staring unblinkingly up at him with her viper eyes. "You're up!" Without another word, the snake unhinged her jaw and struck at his neck, digging in her fangs and massaging her venom glands with the muscular action of her jaw. The veins in Shield's neck bulged for a moment as his health flashed up towards full, and then Lilith released.

Baldur watched as one of the drakes lashed at Shield, managing to get through his defenses, but still was afflicted with his venom. The status effect began to show on the drake, even though it didn't show any damage yet. Turning towards the next drake to show up, Baldur rushed forward, trying to get it before it's fire breath could hit them, swinging his sword in front of them, Baldur's sword art the the flame in half, allowing Baldur to evade the attack, and cleave the drake in half, but the altered course of the fire breath appeared to be just enough of a diversion for Shield's defenses to be in the wrong place, and he ended up taking some damage from it.

"Sorry!" Baldur said with a laugh as Shield healed himself with his familiar. As the sword are finally released control of his body, Baldur whipped the sword around and slowly began to sheath it. He had practiced this many, many times before.

Just as he clicked the blade back into its saya, the drake shattered into thousands of polygons, dying gravity and floating up into the air.

Baldur had a satisfied grin on his face.

"You know," Shield said, narrowing his eyes at the little bugger that had so far twice avoided his thorns and dug its claws deep into his face, "I'm getting a little tired of this little upstart's attitude." He lowered his body into a ready stance, his mundane sword out and at the ready, prepared to receive whatever attack was next. The relacement drake arrived, launching a fireball into the midst of the party that caught both Shield and Baldur.

It was then that the other drake lunged. Its claws stretched out to cut at Shield, but he caught them on his blade and sliced lengthwise up the creature's arm all the way to the shoulder. It was not a powerful cut, but it was deep, and the counterattack used the drake's own momentum, dealing practically as much damage as his thorns might have on their own. "I was also getting a little tired of you having all the fun," he quipped over his shoulder at Baldur, his normally stoic face bearing the slightest hint of a smirk. "Half health after one turn ain't bad for a no-sword-arts tank."

"Yea." Baldur said with a grin as his sword art caused another Drake to explode into light imbued shapes that floated towards the roof of the cave they were in. "Not bad at all. But do you think we could hurry up with this tank kill so we can spawn another pair?" Baldur teased, now that they had build up a comfortable momentum in this fight. Gone was the frustration he had felt building up to this fight.

"So let me pick your brain. I'm working on building up for a secondary set. I want something more accuracy and AoE focused for when we do stuff like this. A katana with absolute accuracy would be perfect if I can get my hands on one, but that would require I fill out the familiar mastery tree. I also want to pick up the skill for additional inventory, so I can carry more buffs and debuffs. What do you think? I love how Itzal has been able to use performer debuffs on bosses, and I'd like to use that more often. I was also thinking about picking up bull rush for the stun."

"Well, if you're in a fight with me, don't you dare rob me of my thorns damage by stunning enemies," he jabbed. He held out his blade and focused his gaze at the tip, watching as the familiar blue bead of light formed and expanded to the size of Shield's hand span. He swung the weapon and tossed the orb to Baldur, watching his own energy drop as Baldur's grew. "Getting yourself bigger pockets is a very new kind of strategy that's really only become viable with the advent of the Quick Change mod. Without that, trading out weapons mid battle would be entirely impractical."

The drakeling before him let out a screech and flapped towards him once again, raking its talons over Shield's forearm. Its health plummeted down to practically nothing, but it was not quite enough to finish it off. "Disappointing. In any case, that option is basically building yourself the floor bosses, since other situations are predictable enough with info brokers and such to more or less never need to change out equipment. Now there are builds that would benefit from a quick change and some extra slots." He straightened up a little and watched the drakeling flap in small, angry circles. "For example, I think Hikoru would benefit from a double proficiency, hitting once from the shadows with a maximized sneak attack and then switching to a more viable weapon until the next time he had a chance to slip into the shadows and charge again."

Baldur smirked when Shield brought up stunning the enemy and losing out on his thorns damage. He had forgotten the tank didn't like stuns, though they had been a weapon of choice for Baldur as a DPS who mostly ran with DPS. If he couldn't one shot something, he could generally 2 shot something.

"You're probably right. I wouldn't want you to fall asleep during a boss fight!" The laughed sparkled in his eyes, mostly because the last few fights had been easy.

"The extra pocket space is to carry around performer debuffs, both in case Itzal isn't there... and in cases where the enemy may have a high evasion, or an on hit effect. I did a quest with Hestia and Calrex, where the mobs applied paralysis, and Cal kept getting chain paralyzed. They were also high evasion mobs. I know that situations is isolated, but I prefer to have options on hand. Same with the swords. When I'm not using Muramasa, I tend to carry around both a bleed and a paralysis sword, depending on the situation calls for. But I was thinking in boss fights more about Bialas. If I had been using my bleed sword, I could have been in a bad situation. The extra slots would let me keep a secondary weapon, just in case. Or also, more healing crystals."

Baldur watched as the last drakling tried to kill itself on Shield's defenses, but it survived with just a few HP. So Baldur walked up, and with a quick pair of slashes, ended the drake's life without pausing in his speech.

"I like the idea of bullrush because I can often prevent something, like these fireballs, from taking effect in the initial turn, and then finish them off in a second without anyone being hurt, rather than having to downgrade my attack to a lower damage for stun. Or use an AoE stun. Progressing my familiar mastery just feels like a waste."

"How do you usually divvy up your battle ready inventory slots for boss fights?" Shield asked, turning just in time to see the newly arriving drakelings. Both of them gaped their jaws and unleashed their flames, washing over Shield. He threw up his shield arm, but it had very little protection to offer for the heat that overtook the air around him. Despite the wide area that the attacks covered, Baldur only seemed to have been caught in the nearer of the two. It was not a powerful enough attack to put either of them at risk, but after enough time, it might prove more irritating.

"Not to say that buffs from performers aren't helpful, because they definitely can be," he said, remembering the Bialis fight as well. "I wish that it had always worked out better in previous boss fights than it has at times. It's just that I've never felt like there was just that much stuff that I've needed." In truth, he had been meaning to begin stocking up on some of the more specialized performer buffs, but they seemed to be more of a luxury or specialty item than something that he would need to carry regularly.

Baldur paused for a moment and tried to remember, "Well, I've got a dimensional backpack already. So I typically carry a teleport crystal, extra safeguards, antidotes, group heal crystals, and healing potions, as a minimum."

Just then, Baldur realized he hadn't dodged in time for the fireball, and the fire enveloped him. He felt the flush of heat on his skin, but the sting of pain and burns wasn't there. He was unconcerned. They were far from needing to heal, and even then, the Drakes couldn't survive long enough to be a threat to Shield and he. If they needed, they could finish off the ones they were fighting and back off to heal and recoup energy.

"I would like to carry around an accuracy debuff song, and a evasion debuff song. They have the ability to turn the tide. It doesn't seem like a big amount, but it can be the difference."

Baldur's sword art cleaved through another drake without really even absorbing much of Baldur's attention.

"I figure, if we're going to try and organize the frontline and turn it into something that is looking to professional move this forward and save lives, then we need to wash our cottage cheese."
