[F01- SP] Aggressive Gardening «Secret Medicine of the Forest»

Recommended Posts

Cosi punched the ground once more, before getting to his feet. Why does this game hate me? I've killed four or five variant nepents- i can't remember- and I haven't gotten the drop yet. Cosi grimaced, his face the definition of angry determination. "But that doesn't mean I'm going to quit. Nope, not any time soon" Cosi went back to the river and continued to follow it. It had led him to some nepents so it was doing what Cosi had hoped it would. As he followed the river Cosi looked for any materials he might be able to use. But so far he was coming out dry. There was nothing of use in this forest, except the plethora of variant nepents and their healing herb and for some odd reason treasure chests. Cosi had literally tripped over the two chests he had found. Cosi had literally tripped over the two chests he had found. It was absurd but true. Cosi must be lucky when it came to treasure but not healing herbs.

Cosi continued walking down the bank of the river, scouting for nepents, materials, or more random half buried treasure chests. The river had both widened and deepened, the current increasing till there were actual rapids. Cosi definitely didn't want to go into the river now. The river meandered and twisted, finding the path of least resistance through the dark forest. And Cosi just followed the turns, keeping one eye out for enemies and one eye out for materials. The forest was mostly tall oak trees, with lots of undergrowth- bushes, small trees, ferns, and fronds- covering the forest floor. The soil was dark and covered in many fallen leaves. The forest was also full of sound. Things rustled through the bushes, birds cawed, insects made... whatever noises insects made. Cosi kepet following the winding river. As he did he noticed something in the river, lying in the shallows. It glinted so it wasn't a stone. Cosi bent over and fished it out of the river. It was a simple bar of iron, surprisingly absent of rust or wear. "Must be good metal" Cosi said to himself as he pocketed the bar.

Cosi kept walking, kept looking. The nepents seem to be getting more scarce, Cosi wondered as he pushed aside bushes and branches. Maybe I've scared them off. Or killed all of them. Though Cosi doubted either of those were the case. The nepents were most likely laying in wait for him, or they were deeper in the forest oblivious to his presence and actions. Hopefully the later. So Cosi kept trudging along, searching for his prey. As the warrior strode deeper and deeper into the forest the trees loomed higher, their branches let in fewer beams of light, the undergrowth of bushes grew denser, and the woods fell silent. Creepy, Cosi glanced around warily, and gripped the pommel of Messer. Then he saw them. Two more nepents on the same side of the river as him. Cosi drew his blade. Messer caught a stray ray of light and its runes glinted. Time for more weed killing.

Cosi, not one for subtly, simply charged the nepents hoping to surprise and attack them before they could react. Cosi attacked the nearest plant monster, swinging his sword in a mittelhau aimed at its upper torso, while raising Rose Gold to ward of the other nepent's attacks. Cosi's attack hit and ripped through the first nepent pushing it back. Cosi ducked under its return attack as it shrieked in rage. Cosi then quickly turned to the second nepent to see it charging him. Cosi stepped out of the way and brought up his heater shield to block the creature's flailing spiked tendrils. The vines thumped into Rose Gold causing no damage. Cosi grinned just as he felt thorns rip down his back. He turned as he retreated. There he saw that the first nepent had continued its assault and had ended up hitting Cosi while he was focused on the other creature.

These evil plants always came in pairs. Cosi grimaced as they circled him, their vine arms writhing in the air. Cosi hunkered down behind his shield trying to keep both nepents in view and to keep as much of him protected. Cosi quickly moved in and struck the first monster, trying to kill it so he would only have to worry about one nepent attacking him. As soon as he struck Cosi retreated back, raising Rose Gold to ward off retaliating attacks. The strike cut across the monster's chest and as the nepent turned into crimson code as it weakly tried to attack back. Cosi ignored the now dead nepent and turned to the second one, his shield upraised. He heard the other nepent scream, then saw its thorny vine arms swinging towards him. Cosi quickly side stepped the attack and brought up Rose Gold, just as a precaution. One that he didn't need.

After blocking the attack Cosi pushed his shield up, throwing away the monster's tendrils, and advanced forward trying to get as close to the nepent and inside the reach of its tentacles. Cosi thrust at the creature's torso with his blade, trying to catch the monster before it could scramble away like they always did. Thankfully the thrust connected, sinking into the sentient plant's cellulose like skin. Cosi pulled out the blade, seeing its gold runes flash. Ha I paralyzed the thing. The nepent shrieked and before its muscles completely stiffened it attacked back. Cosi tried to raise up his shield but both tendrils connected, knocking him completely off his feet. Cosi flew back a couple feet and landed by the edge of the river as the paralysis took hold of the nepent. It dropped like a log. Cosi ached as he got up but he could already feel the cool healing energy for his shield wash over him. This fight would be over soon.

Cosi moved away form the edge of the river and approached the prone nepent. Cosi stood over it, looking at its twitching muscles and sporadic movements and its wound glowing with red code. Cosi hefted his sword and then stabbed down with all his might. The blade sank up to the hilt. Particles floated up from the wound. Cosi pulled the blade free and watched as the nepent dissolved completely into red pixels and drifted off into the air. Cosi sighed. The fight was over, now to wait for the vari- Cosi was cut off a a loud crash sounded from the other side of the river. Cosi turned and saw a variant nepent standing across the river from him. Its tendrils and mouth twitched as the flower on top of it seemed to stare at Cosi. Cosi stared back then looked down at the river, and then back at the nepent variant. At this point in the river it was probably nearly twelve feet across and too fast and deep to ford. Why did you have to be on that side of the river?

Cosi gathered himself. Jumped up and down once or twice, then backed up a good twenty feet. The variant Nepent's flower cocked to one side as it regarded him quizzically. Cosi sheathed Messer then... sprinted straight towards the river. His armor clanked as he sped towards the edge. But before he quite reached it, Cosi pushed off the ground and jumped. He sailed across the gap and realized he would clear it. Then Cosi realized he would also collide straight into the variant nepent. Can I hit it from in mid air? Cosi thought to himself as he scrambled to try and pull out his sword. Can I hit it with a sword art in mid air? Cosi was still trying to unsheathe Messer when the variant nepent lashed out with its tendril, grabbed Cosi out of the air, and then threw him behind it. Cosi crashed into the solid earth. He shook his head. He hadn't sustained any damage but that didn't mean he was a little bit jarred.

Cosi quickly got up, turned to the variant nepent, ducked under a swinging- reaction time saved him there- and then sprinted towards it. He still had plenty more energy for a sword art and if he just hit the thing once or twice it would probably go down. Cosi chopped into it with his sword before it could race away- he hated how fast these plant monsters were- and then hit it again. The bark like armor of this thing was tough but it was vulnerable to repeated, forceful strikes. Cosi hit the plant creature's torso once more time. The thing screamed and tried to scuttle away, flailing its arms as it whip. Cosi didn't let it get away. He felt a thorn cut across his face but, implacably, Cosi pursued the monster. He backed the variant nepent up the the river bank and then when it could run no more he thrust his blade into it.

The variant nepent crumbled into red particles and was carried off by the air. Cosi held his breath as he waited to see if he got any loot. He would have died from lack of oxygen. Cosi had still not gotten the dumb drop. That medicinal ovule was going to be the death of him. Cosi couldn't understand how he hand't gotten it yet. He had killed about five of those nepent variants and still nothing. It was infuriating. He stumbled and tripped over treasure chests but still no damn ovule. Cosi breathed out trying to calm himself down. Okay, okay. You're done ranting to yourself. Now how about I go find some more regular nepents and one more variant. Maybe I'll get lucky then. So Cosi went off to do exactly that. He was on the other side of the river so maybe he would find more of the evil plant creatures on this side of the forest. On his way through he happened upon a small jewel that could probably be used in crafting so Cosi picked it up.

Cosi continued walking through the forest, straying a little ways away from the rushing river just so he could hopefully hear any monsters- specifically nepents- better. Cosi kept moving his eyes flicking back and forth between any movement he saw. The twitch of a bush from the wind. The snap of a twig. The randomly falling dead branch. He did not see any monsters, materials, or treasure chests. Still Cosi kept his eyes open, hoping to spot one of his three goals. He definitely wanted to spot a treasure chest. He did not want to trip over a third one while he was in this forest. He'd go crazy. The treasure chests were more silent and sneaky than the nepents he could hardly find anymore. Still Cosi kept moving, kept searching, and most importantly: he kept hunting. And while Cosi didn't find materials he thought he heard something scuttling off to his right, towards the river. Cosi went to investigate.

Cosi rushed around a bend and past a couple trees, trying to find the source of the movement. It was probably a nepent or two trying to sneak up on him, but they had already tried that so Cosi was prepared for anything the evil sentient celery sticks tried. Cosi moved around through the undergrowth probably causing as much noise as whatever he was pursuing, but Cosi did not care at all. He wanted to find those plants and turn them into compost. He wanted to get that drop and then get out of this forest as soon as he could. He'd been in here much too long. Cosi burst out of the bushes and found himself at the edge of the roaring river with no nepents in sight. Cosi cursed and kicked at a rock which went flying into the river. Cosi hadn't even seen any more materials and now he had lost the nepents. Damn it! Cosi really hated those things and he was beginning to hate this forest.

Then just as he was turning to continue searching, Cosi heard something shuffle off to his left. Cosi quickly moved and jumped behind that tree. There was a nepent there trying to scurry away from the armored warrior. "Got you" Cosi grinned as he approached the plant monster, "But where's your friend?" These things always traveled in pairs, so where was the second one? Not worrying about the inconsistency Cosi charged the one that he had in front of him and attacked it. The thing scuttled backwards and danced out of the blade's way and attacked back. Cosi quickly brought up his shield and blocked the thorn covered vines. Then Cosi heard something behind him. He spun just to see a second nepent's spiked tendrils about to hit him. Cosi tried vainly to bring up his shield or evad the strike but he couldn't move in time. Both tentacles hit him. They didn't get past his armor but still they threw off his balance and Cosi stumbled back towards the first nepent.

Cosi stabilized and then tried to attack the first nepent. He slashed at it with his sword trying to chop it in half. The plant creature scuttled away on its many legs then struck back with its long tendril like vine arms. Cosi brought his shield to block the attack, and then side stepped and turned as he heard undergrowth being trampled behind him. He caught sight of the second sentient carrot stick charging him. Cosi dove out of the way just barely avoiding the slashing vines. He really did not like it when these things were smart and tried to ambush him. They were not very good at it but Cosi wasn't smart enough to recognize it. So they three just ended up swinging and missing each other for a couple minutes, which was a best annoying and at worst infuriating. And Cosi was past getting annoyed at this part of the day.

Cosi tried again. He ducked under the first nepent's flailing vines and charged at it trying to kill it quick so he could move on to the second one and then go find a variant nepent to go kill. These evil vegetable monsters were getting really infuriating. Cosi lashed out with his sword and again thee nepent was too damn fast! It scuttled away and lashed out with its thorn covered tendrils. Cosi managed to block one but the second arm managed to get past his defenses and slice across his cheek. Cosi stumbled back and into the second nepent's own attack. Cosi felt the tentacles pound against his back and he he flet something snap- just a little- inside him. Cosi yelled a primal yell and swung his sword at the monster. The blade hit hard and cut deep, actually slicing clean through the creature. The nepent's top half- spraying red particles- was propelled away with the force of the blow. Cosi turned back to the last nepent, breathing heavily, and moved to attack it.

Cosi ran towards the last nepent standing and swung his sword in a oberhau, aiming to split the plant monster down the middle. The creature backed up but for once it wasn't fast enough to avoid Cosi's attack. The blade slashed across the thing's chest leaving a deep gash in the cellulose like flesh. Cosi grinned in triumph then he had to quickly bring up his shield for cover as the sentient stick of celery attacked back. He steeped back and felt the thorny arms strike Rose Gold but they did no damage to him. Cosi heard the thing shriek- a high pitched noise that was not human- as it realized its attacks were useless against Cosi's armor. Cosi moved past the swing vines and attempted to get closer to the nepent so he could finish the monster off. But the flailing arms kept him at bay. Cosi would have to make a reckless charge at the creature.

So he did just that. Cosi charged passed the slashing vines and headed straight for the nepent. He brought his shield up to cover his head- I really should get a helmet to cover my noggin- and tried to move fast so that the nepent would not have a chance to get away from him. Cosi charged in and slashed at the plant creature. The sword tip just barely as the nepent moved back and attacked Cosi with its vine arms. Cosi didn't even care about the nepent's retaliation. He strode forward, letting the spiked tendrils fall across his shoulder, and he thrust his sword into the nepent's torso. He winced as he heard that internal whine that came with taking damage but other than that Cosi didn't flinch as the attack hit. All he cared about from the nepent now turning into lines of crimson code before him. It was dead.

Cosi sheathed his sword and sighed. Now that that fight was over, all Cosi had to do was find a nepent variant and hope that when he killed it he would get the herb drop from the darn thing. So that's exactly what he did. Cosi kept following the river hoping to find a variant nepent. He pushed through the under growth and past tree branches, clearing his path along side the winding river. The river itself had narrowed- maybe only six or eight feet across now- but it wasn’t any slower. It still roiled and surged. It’s rapids moving fast.

Cosi just kept moving along the bank, looking for a variant nepent or materials if he spotted any. Or maybe he would trip over a third treasure chest but Cosi doubted his luck was that good. Or that bad. And it seemed like he would find none of what he was searching for.

Cosi's luck had become utterly normal. Neither good nor bad. He didn't stumble over any treasure chests, or find any materials, or even get ambushed by any damn nepent variants which was what he was really looking for in the forsaken forest. Without anything to collect or kill, Cosi just kept walking along the river bank, listening to the sound of rushing water and rustling trees as he continued to search for his prey: a variant nepent. All he needed was one drop of that ovule from one of those things and he could be out of this forest. Then he could collect his rewards, probably level up at least once, and then head back up to his shop on floor four to identify all the stuff he found on this terrible excursion. Of course if his luck would give him the damn drop once he found a nepent to kill.

Cosi decided to branch out and leave the river side, he hadn't found anything worth while there yet. So he struck off in a random direction and headed deeper into the forest. At least he was fairly sure it was deeper into the forest. He really hoped he didn't pop outside of the forest and have to go venturing backing into those forsaken trees.

Thankfully- as thankful as Cosi could be to continue travelling in a dark forest- that did not happen. Cosi kept walking through the trees, pushing past bushes and branches. His armor clanked and really was the only sound in the forest which was very for boding. The forest got darker and even more over grown, which only made things creepier. Cosi hoped that it was really the trees growing thicker and closer together and not the sun going down behind the mountains. He did not want to be caught in this forest in the night time. That would not be fun.
