Cosi was sent flying. He crashed into the wet ground by one of his own corpses and, as dazed as he was, saw the monster scale the wall of the cavern they were in. It scrabbled across the ceiling, pulling itself rapidly along with its four massive claws. Cosis shook his head to clear the swimming feeling and stumbled to his feet. Cosi saw that the demon's name was der Sensenmann- The Gim Reaper- how fitting. The Reaper moved along, hunting down Cosi, till it was right above him. Then it dropped, spun in midair- it was agile for such a large creature- and tried to crush Cosi with its spear like arms. Cosi tried to dive out of the way. Cosi just managed to avoid the claws but he didn't have his sword. So Cosi raced back to it, trying to outrun the Reaper. He hoped that he would be able to.

Cosi ran as fast as his legs would allow him, especially in the blood soaked dirt. He felt more than felt the Reaper charging after him. The ground shook and air was displaced by its movement. Cosi continued to run. He could just barely see the glint of his sword, Rasierklinge, laying where it had fallen. Cosi dove for the blade, scooped it up in his gauntleted hand, spun around, and instantly had to duck as he saw a claw coming right for his head. Cosi rolled under the attack and ended up beneath the Reaper. Taking advantage of the situation Cosi stabbed upward into its under side. The horror quickly scuttled aside and retaliated trying to pin Cosi to the ground. Cosi rolled to the side and scrambled to his feet. He had to dodge another two strikes then one claw slammed into Cosi's shield. The shield deflected the attack, but still the blow jarred Cosi's arm.

Cosi struck back at the nightmare monster trying to finish the fight as quickly as possible. He was screaming internally but he kept going, the fear actually mobilizing him to action. He swung his blade, and was surprised when the Reaper moved one of its massive claws in front of the attack. The blow bounced of the bone appendage, hardly even chipping it. Cosi heard a psychic hiss from the horror and he quickly backed away holding up Rose Gold to ward away the follow up attack. Another claw flashed out trying to take off his head. Cosi ducked and brought up his shield simultaneously to block the attack. Again the awesome force behind the blow jarred his shield arm. Cosi stumbled back and had to quickly side step as another claw tried to impale him. Those clawed arms were like barbed spears of bone, covered in more spikes and spurs.

Cosi jumped out of the way of a fourth strike- this thing was too fast and agile for something so monstrously massive- and then tried to attack back, hoping that he would actually hit this time. Cosi’s first strike bounced off the thick black carapace but he persisted. He evaded a swinging claw arm and jabbed his sword into the Reaper’s underside. He pulled out the blade and slashed it twice more. Black blood poured from the wound but it was thick, like syrup. The horror shrieked that same mind splitting scream that made Cosi want to curl up in the fetal position. Cosi grimaced but kept going. He tried to attack the thing once more but it scurried away on its many legs, avoiding the attack. It seemed to regard Cosi with its piercing red eye... or whatever it was. The red glow obscured any other features it’s head had. Although Cosi was glad he couldn’t see the thing’s face. He was sure that it was not pleasant.

Cosi had to quickly move as the nightmare creature tried to crush him again. He ducked and side stepped a claw, and then had to chase after the Reaper as it scuttled back. Its probably trying to stay out of reach of my sword. It has plenty of reach with those massive claws but I need to get up close and personal to attack this thing. Cosi dashed forwards and attacked three times in quick succession, slashing across the massive monster's underside. Again there was that psychic scream that made Cosi want to pull out his teeth, and the Reaper moved out of reach and tried to impale Cosi with its claws. Cosi tried to evade the spear like tendril, but as he stepped aside he slipped on a pool of blood and went down. The bone spear barreled towards him and it was all Cosi could do bring up his shield to block the titanic claw.

Cosi felt the claw collide with Rose Gold. It felt like a hammer hammering a nail into the wood and Cosi was the nail. He did not take any damage but the force of the blow literally pushed Cosi down into the blood drenched earth. Again the thing pounded on Cosi's shield, pushing him deeper into the black earth. The blows rained on his shield, filling the cavern with the sound of clashing steel and clanging metal. Not good, not good. Cosi thought to himself. He couldn't get out of the hole: the blows were coming to fast. And with every blow Cosi sank deeper into the ground. Great, this nightmare is going to bury me alive and way deeper than six feet under. Cosi braced Rose Gold with both hands. If I can just roll out of the way of those claws then climb out of the hole... Cosi felt the blows repeatedly smash into his shield, Who am I kidding. This thing is going to grind me into dust. There won't even be a corpse left to join the others out there.

Cosi struggled beneath the onslaught of bone. He grimaced as he tried to to learn the timing of the coming blows so that he could get out of this very bad predicament. Suddenly, Cosi felt a stinging pain in his leg. The Reaper had reached down and grabbed Cosi's leg in its pincer like claw. The serrated edges of the bone cut into his leg some as the beast picked up Cosi. Before the beast could eat or crush Cosi, he quickly stabbed the horror in the knuckle bone, making the creature scream and hurl him across the cavern. I guess he likes to be able to chase down his quarry, was all Cosi thought as he flew through the air. He would have braced for impact but there was no way to do that in the air. Cosi slammed into the cavern wall and slid down with a clatter.

Cosi rose unsteadily to his feet. That had hurt a lot- his entire body felt bruised- but his armor took so much of the force of the impact that Cosi really hadn't taken too much damage. I need to go thank Macradon for this armor because I'm not taking any damage from this nightmare. Cosi shook his head and tried to roll out his weary body and tired arms. Then after a moments respite- and noticing that the Reaper was quickly charging towards him with its lumbering gait as it clawed it’s way forward on its clawed bone arms and scuttled with it multitude of insect like back legs. Cosi hefted his sword and shield and waited the thing, bracing himself. Then right before the thing crushed Cosi, he side stepped the claw, slashed across it, ducked under another claw, and slashed across the thing’s under belly twice more. The thing screamed that awful scream then smacked Cosi aside with another arm. Cosi stumbled and nearly fell as the bone claw hit across Rose Gold. Then he struck back cutting sinew and bone with his attack.

The Reaper screamed and rested up on is back legs. It lunged at Cosi with its bone claws mostly warding him away and not really attacking. The demon was so very close to defeat and death, Cosi knew it. He charged in with his shield held high to defend from attacks. One more sword art ought to finish it off and I think I’ve got one left in me. Cosi ran straight for the Reaper, determined on finishing it off now, and swung his sword with all the strength and energy left in him. The first strike bounced off a shielding claw, hardly chipping bone. Cosi moved passed and tried to strike at the thing's belly but it scuttled away causing Cosi's next attack to miss the horrible monster as well. Cosi's last attack was less of an actual measure strike and more of a wild rage fueled swing that went completely off its mark. Cosi stopped his assault, breathing heavily, then had to retreat and block a retaliating strike from the Reaper.

Cosi blocked another strike meant to impale him, then ducked under the next and rushed the monstrous reaper. Cosi's lungs burned as he ran, he was so tired now, but he kept moving. He needed to kill this thing even if he was too tired for sword arts. He would kill this thing. Cosi ducked and slid under another bone claw then got up and kept running. His armor and shield was heavy but Cosi did not let that slow him down- okay he let it slow him down a little- and kept charging the Reaper. Once in measure Cosi swung at it trying to find a weak spot in the carapace of bone. The strike cut into dissected flesh but Cosi felt the bone hide sap most of the forc of the blow. Still the thing screamed its unearthly scream and tried to crush Cosi forcing him to duck and retreat from the massive swinging bone arms.

Cosi made a tactical retreat, keeping his front- and more importantly his shield, Rose Gold- towards the monster that was trying to make a last ditch onslaught of attacks before Cosi ended its sorry existence. Death no longer held any fear for him. Not after he had seen countless numbers of his own dead corpse- mutilated and torn apart- and nearly killed a giant death machine monster that looked like the cross between a centipede and a spider with a glowing red face. Yeah nothing's really scarier than that so I think I'm done with my fears. Cosi side stepped a titanic swing that pounded into the bloody earth and sank about four feet into it. Then he broke into a run and tried to finish the thing off. Cosi got inside its reach and again he aimed for a weak spot hoping if he hit just right it would be  kill shot. The blade slipped right through the black carapace like bone and the Reaper screamed in agony.

Cosi was suddenly thrown off his feet as the think reared and then smashed Cosi with one of its four arms. The massive monster made of white bone and black sinews started convulsing with pain but it did not die. I'll help it along to its own death, Cosi smiled as he stood. Cosi hefted his sword as the thing trembled with pain, took aim, and did the most stupid thing a sword user could do. He through his sword. The weapon flipped end over end as it sailed towards the dying creature, flashing red with the light of the Reaper's eye. Cosi sincerely hoped the sword would embed itself in the horror's chest and finish it off or he would be without a weapon. But the blade sailed true and as the sword sank hilt deep into the creature and it screamed one last time, Cosi resolved to never throw his sword again.

Cosi watched as the Reaper- der Sensenmann- began to melt as it psychically screamed in utter agony. The sound torn at Cosi’s brain and made it seem like it was being constricted and slowly crushed. Cosi clasped his temples, sank to his knees and began screaming just like the monstrous being. The Reaper slowly but surely crumbled to ash, it’s bones cracking, it’s flesh decaying at an alarming rate, and it’s muscle atrophying just as fast. The last demon convulsed and twitched as it turned to nothingness. It’s scream became a piercing yell, than a cry, and finally a pitiful gurgle that caught somewhere and stopped. Now that his did not feel like it was being squished into mush, Cosi rose unsteadily to his feet. The Reaper was nothing more than a disgusting pile of ash, blood, and guts that was already slowly sinking into the blood stained ground adding to the horror and filth.

Cosi retched slightly- okay it was actually a lot- as he saw the giant pile of ofal that the last demon had become. He stood shakily and stumbled towards it because, as much as it sickened him, his sword was in that pile of blood and flesh and Cosi was not losing his sword. Thankfully the sword was not too hard to find. It was the only solid thing in the pile besides the occasional rib bone- why did this thing have twenty four ribs?- so it was not too difficult to fish around in the stuff and find it. Also Cosi only puked three times which better than he had thought. After searching through that filth, Cosi staggered his way away from it even though he had no idea wher to go. After defeating and killing the last three demons Cosi had simply be teleported back to the door he had entered into. But no this time.

Cosi walked around the cavern like a drunk man. He stepped over his own corpses and slipped in pools of blood. Cosi wandered listlessly, wondering what he was supposed to do or where he was supposed to go to get out of this hell scape. He stumbled around for what seemed like eternity, looking, searching, hoping for anything that would take him outside to the place of green grasslands and cloudy skies. then Cosi saw something: an open doorway. A doorway made entirely of light that shone like a beacon in this darkness. The light nearly blinded him, but Cosi used all of his strength to run towards the welcoming light. The light was not a harsh light but a warm, comforting, and beckoning light. Cosi couldn't help but run- a little haltingly and unsteadily- over to the doorway, hoping that this was his ticket out. Please let it be the way out.

Cosi practically dove head first through the brightly glowing doorway. He found himself laying face down in green grass with a light sprinkle of rain falling on his back. Cosi pumped both of his fists out in an exultant cry, although it was muffled by the grass that he was face down in. "Yes! Yes!" Cosi yelled and began rolling around on the fresh grass, letting the rain fall on his face. "Ha! Suckers! You're all dead!" Cosi sat up and pointed at the doorways in victory, then he paused in his revelry. The doorways had changed to four majesty stone arches. Gone were the symbols of death, betrayal, and fear. They had all been replaced by sculptures of leafy vines, blossoming flowers, and symbols of life and peace. Cosi stopped his victorious cries and just sat there, taking it all in. He had conquered all four of his inner demons.

They were all defeated and dead. Gone. No more guilt, or having to lie to himself. No more hopeless feelings or fear of death. It was all gone and that was because Cosi had faced them. It might have been in a virtual game but the same emotion and struggle that he had gone through in here, he had gone through in the game. Thankfully he had not had to fight literal demons in the real would. Cosi laughed to himself at that thought. He stood up from his seated position feeling quite rejuvenated and began to stretch out his arms and back. They were still sore after those four fights. Then Cosi noticed something, something had made his face split into a massive grin. The rain had stopped and snow flakes had begun falling. The snow fall picked up dusting the green landscape with white and suddenly in the distance Cosi could see in the distance a forest of pine trees, that had definitely not been there before, all dusted with snow. Cosi yelled with joy and began spinning around in the falling snow.

This landscape, whether it was his inner mind, his soul, his emotional state, or all three, reflected the peace in his mind and heart. It had been stormy and chaotic when he got here and now that he had defeated his four inner demons it had transformed into a winter paradise, just the place Cosi felt most at home and most at peace. He grinned even wider then stuck out his tongue to catch a falling snowflake. This part of the game he could not believe was virtual. There was something supernatural going on here. The NerveGear read your brain input so it could tell which stimuli brought which emotions but it wasn't smart enough to read surface thoughts or connect memories and fears to those stimuli...was it? No that had to be something from SAO. Just another something the creator had made to screw with the players. Suddenly Cosi really wanted to leave this place.

Turned to where the guide had been waiting the entire time but the shadowed and featureless being was gone now. Looks like I will have to find my own way back. Better start moving. Cosi began his trek back to the flat rock that he had woken up on. It would be a lot more difficult without the smiling guide. Mostly because with the snow it would be hard to spot and the two of them had walked for what seemed like eternity to get to the semicircle of doors that were now archways. Cosi turned back to look at those arches one more time. They were now dusted with a couple inches of snow but that only added to the beauty of the sculpting and their design. Cosi sighed in remembrance and then kept moving. There was no point in waiting. He needed to get back to the real world.

Cosi quickly traveled through the snow and the magically appearing pine forest. It was amazing how this place reacted to his emotional and mental stat. It was making his own preferred paradise. Cosi was surprised to find the flat stone so easily. It lay in a small clearing between the pine trees somehow untouched by the snow. Cosi shrugged at this but did not let that fact bther him. He walked over and laid down on the rock, closing his eyes and letting the snow fall over him. Sleep came quickly. 

And just as quickly Cosi found himself stirring as he felt the warmth of the sun and the rock on his back. He felt mist from the waterfall on his skin and could hear its soothing roar. Cosi blinked his eyes, rubbed away the lingering sleep, and sat up. He was back in the real world. Well he was back in Aincrad. Cosi stood up. He stared at the waterfall. He felt different. More balanced and at peace. There was no turmoil inside him anymore. Cosi grinned and turned to leave.
