[F22 - PP] No One Mourns The Wicked! <<Witch of the West>>

Recommended Posts

Neo had heard of an item that would help boost her crafting that could be foudn on the twenty-second floor. It was a suspicious deal, but would be wonderful if it was true. Of course, she knew that there was no way that she could take on a boss on such a high floor while at her current power level. Posting her help wanted ad to the board, she sat inside a nearby inn to wait for someone to take up her offer. Hopefully it would be someone who could tank the hits for her. That wasn't to say there would be no danger, but she really wanted to help people out mmore with crafting for the next raid no matter how far out it is.

Objectives:

  • Must defeat 4 Flying Monkeys
  • Must defeat 1 Elite Flying Monkey per player
  • Must defeat The Witch (unless every participant has already defeated The Witch previously)

Summary:
Deep past the Forest of Memories stands The Castle of the Witch. Rumors have spread around the town about a woman was seen walking around the floor's peaceful meadows and lake's edges, collecting ingredients for her sinister experiments. A few players that have had the misfortune of encountering the woman claim to have heard her spout threats of a terrible curse that she plans to unleash upon the otherwise peaceful floor of Aincrad. On more than one occasion, the main settlement of Coral has seen the shadow of winged beasts raiding their storerooms in the dead of night and stealing supplies and fleeing without a trace before any of the villagers could manage to catch them in the act. The two have said to be connected, and lately the villagers have started asking players if they might be able to find the witch in her castle and put a stop to whatever foul experiments she's running.

Trekking past the edge of the forest, you first see nothing out of the ordinary, but then you hear it. The sounds of wings flapping, and suddenly monkeys surround you. This quest is almost starting to sound like a childhood fairy tale you might have heard of. The monkeys stand in the way of the darkened brick of the castle that awaits you, the sinister glow of black fire flickering from torches affixed to the wall.

Those who have already felled the wicked witch once before will no longer find her brewing potions in the solitude of her castle, but after defeating the winged monkeys that still loyally defend it players will find that the vials they could have sworn were empty before have been mysteriously refilled.

Shield had been scanning the listings for a while. He sat on the bench near the teleportation plaza in the Different requests slid in and out of view on his HUD, none of them particularly catching his eye, until one scrolled by. It caught his eye for two reasons: for one, he knew the player, but more to the point, the quest was one that he had been looking to grind more often. He opened a reply window and penned a response to the author.

Quote

'Neo

I can join you presently. I'll meet you by the inn.

-Shield'

As he made for the exit, he pulled an immolation potion from his inventory and downed it, walking briskly through the door. He stepped into the gate and called out the floor where he was heading to meet Neo. Walking along the crowded street, he spotted the inn. He craned his neck, trying to spot his ally over the passers by.

Neo had been sitting in the inn, waiting for a response to her request. She wasn't really expecting any response because of how low of a level she was, but was surprised when an acquaintance of hers sent in a response. It was from someone she had only seen a few times, but knew that they were quite the trustworthy person. She had never seen them fight, but based upon the gear they had on them before the raid they were likely a tank or at least someone who could take a hit. Knowing that they were on their way, Neo made her way outside of the inn and leaned up against the wall of it. She didn't know when they were coming, so instead decided to let her pink hair signal where she was to Shield. Sending out a thought , she let her familiar know that they would be leaving for an expedition soon. They would probably stay flying about for a bit on their own, but they would at least know she was getting ready to head out and not be left behind.

It did not take Shield long to spot the familiar flamboyant hair of the person he was looking for. He approached Neo and raised his hand in greeting. "Good to see you again," he offered genially. "I assume you don't mind walking as we chat?" His mouth twisted slightly at the corner, knowing full well that Neo would not be speaking at all. He motioned for her to follow before taking off down the road toward the edge of town. As they passed out of the milling players and NPC's, Shield took a breath, glad to be away from the noise.

"This will be my fourth time tackling this quest," he said, his eyes staying forward on the path. "Once you have completed this one, the final boss no longer appears upon repeating it. However, that's only true if everyone with you has also completed the quest. As it stands, I've had to battle the witch two of the three times previously and will have to do so again today." They drew nearer to the woods, and Shield could already see the mist licking at the roots of the trees and hear the distant screeching of flying monkeys. "That's not to mention fighting the witch back before the revamp of the quest, back when there was a cowardly lion and a scarecrow to tag along."

A familiar face approached Neo as she was waiting for Shield. She nodded to him, it was good to see a familiar face. And she shook her head, not minding if they walked as he talked. It would mean he might need to glance over to her to see her responses, but they could at least make their way towards the quest area while they went over things. As they talked about the quest itself, Neo was realizing the hole she was putting herself into. Feeling a little guilty for dragging Shield along when they didn't need to fight the boss should they go for it themselves, Neo made sure that her gear was as good as it could be. It wasn't much, but it would hopefully help in the battle to come. Her cobalt blue pseudo-dragon also came down to coil itself loosely around her neck. Its scales were cold, but gave her comfort. It wouldn't be long before they reached the castle though, so she sent a thought to her familiar and had it change to rest on her shoulder instead.

As they slipped through the forest, their footsteps falling out of sight in the dense mist that blanketed the ground, the castle in the distance began to show through the tops of the trees. Overhead, circling shapes soared up high, scouring the forest below on their patrol. "Since my thorns will probably a big chunk of the damage we deal, I'm going to try to attract as many of them as I can," he said, glancing over to Neo to make sure she was following and agreed to the course of action. "The more of them we have swinging at once, the more damage they'll rack up on my defenses."

A swish of wings and a nearby primal shriek told him that they had been spotted. "Looks like it's show time. You're welcome to first swing. Don't worry about them," he added, pulling his shield down off of his shoulder. "Once I give them a shout, they won't even know you're there to attack you." The beating of wings drew closer, and Shield began scanning the air overhead for the wings' owner. "Should be an easy enough quest, if not a little time consuming. Let's do this."

It seemed Neo was right in here assumption that Shield was a tank. Was in his name after all. She nodded in agreement to his strategy, though unnsure how he would actually draw their attention off of her. It seemed like he had everything planned out though, so that meant she would be able to at least do some damage. Hearing the flapping of wings, Neo looked up and saw the flying monkeys, almost begging to be attacked. Hoping Shield was speaking true when he said she would be able to attack them, she charged up a sword art and leapt into the air. She gave a feww thrusts into the lead monkey and ended with a downward thrust into the ground. It didn't do that much damage, but at least she could back off of it and let the other monkeys also see Shield as the target. The battle had begun.

Shield let Neo get a head start before gathering up a lungful of air. He waited until the airborne primates were down below the canopy before unleashing the built up pressure, sending a wave of sound and force into the tangle of flying foes. "What are you all looking at?" he bellowed, the power of his lungs knocking the monkeys off-kilter, flapping to regain their balance howling and hooting with confusion and anger.

Righting themselves in the air and trooping single-file at Shield. He took the brunt of their attacks, each one after the next striking harder than the one before. Their health totals began to plummet, the burns and scrapes from his armor taking their toll on the monkeys. The third one got wise and veered to the side sending a flurry of claws at the side of Shield's head. The stalwart front liner took the hit, his health ticking down little bits at a time, but more importantly as it wheeled away through the air, a little venom icon now decorating its health bar. The final monkey thought better of the attack, bailing out and circling overhead with its allies to regroup.

"Neo," Shield called out. "Those ones that are poisoned or have taken hits are only one more good hit away from death. Let them kill themselves. Focus on that healthy one. He's likely going to outlive everyone else!"

Neo watched as Shield taunted the flying monkeys onto himself. She was still baffled at how easy it was to distract the AI, and it was completely ignoring her. Most of them just barreled into him and their health bars began to plummet. Debating who to strike next, Shield directed her towards one of the more healthy ones. It was the one that had hung back a bit and not connected a hit against Shield, likely because they were seeing their own friends get hurt. She went in for a swing at them, but was unable to actually connect the hit. It was moving just fast enough in blind rage against Shield that she wasn't ready for it to move out of the way. Jumping back in fear of getting attacked, she let them continue to go after the tank. It felt good to not worry so much about taking a hit, unlike whenever she was the strongest in the party and that made her tank by default.

Shield watched as the little troupe of flying monkeys regrouped and circled around. Watching them scramble into order, he frowned as he realized that they would be hitting him in the exact same order as before. He did his best to take them each as they came, deflecting them with his shield in order to maximize the damage they took from his defenses, but they matched the previous attack almost blow for blow. The second in line managed to slip his defenses altogether, but the first died on impact, bursting into light shards, and the third once again swung around his barrier to strike him full-on. The venom marker on its health gauge renewed as its hit points began to show signs of trickling away.

"Well, that was less productive than I had hoped," he sighed. "Same deal as before. That last one managed to slip by me again, and he's likely the only one that will survive a single hit. He's priority target right now." He frowned at the soaring simians, not entirely certain that their attacks hadn't been somehow orchestrated "The AI in this game can be infuriating."

Neo watched as Shield was attacked repeatedly by the flying monkeys. He seemed to be doing fine as it was, but she wasn't sure if he would be able to keep it up indefinitely. Regardless, she listened to his directions. He seemed to be confident in this encounter so she felt no reason to distrust that. At the very least, she wanted to give it her all. One of them did go down from the returned damage of Shield's armor, but three were still remaining. She saw that the healthy one was starting to go behind Shield and prepare for a back strike.

Oh no you don't.

Neo quickly charged up her sword art and flung herself at the monkey. Her strikes were true and she was able to thrust the monkey back over to Shield's front side, it's health bar dipping quite a ways. It seemed she was given a bit of a buff from Shield without knowing it.

Shield held out his sword arm. Rather than the red sphere he had summoned a moment ago to boost Neo, he this time charged up a more neutral colored pale blue sphere. With a flick of his elbow, he tossed it to his teammate, topping off her energy stores. It was likely not necessary, but if it meant being able to push through to the next fight without a rest, it was worthwhile.

Overhead, the monkeys were not as satisfied as Shield was by the tides of the battle. A chorus of screeches and howls went up from their flapping formation. With their comrade down for the count, they took a moment of scrambling to settle into a new formation, barreling once again at Shield single file. This gave Shield all the time he needed to prepare for them. This in addition to their new numbers meant Shield was able to visibly track each without difficulty. Unfortunately, only one of them was accurate enough to land a hit. Its health dropped dramatically, which was fine by Shield.

"They're each one hit away now," he called to Neo. "Take your pick, but I'd leave the envenomed one to die on its own. It has a finite lifespan!"

The monkeys were flying towards Shield, and Neo did her best to find an opening in them. It was rather difficult to find the opening she wanted, but noticed that one oif the monkeys had broken off for a little bit. Capitalizing on it, Neo activated her strongest sword art and attacked the monkey with all her might. The first thrust immediately clipped the wings, cuasing it to tumble back to the ground. She didn't let it fall naturally though as the second thrust drove it into the ground. The third thrust launched it back up a little bit while the fourth thrust put it back into the main group to go attack Shield. She noticed it also had a bleeding effect going on it while it lay there motionless. Though it might have been a bit of a slowdown, it meant that Shield would have that much less pressure on him.

Shield watched as one of the monkeys dropped out of the sky, slowly bleeding. Still, he knew that a downed monkey was a monkey that couldn't die on his defenses. He frowned slightly but did not let himself become distracted. He held out his sword arm, conjuring up a fresh crimson red orb of light and launching it towards his ally. "Focus on the one that's down! The poisoned one is dead on its next attack! The other one is mine!"

Unfortunately, Shield was left eating his words, as the healthiest of the monkeys missed him entirely, tumbling through the air as its claws swiped and connected with nothing. It chattered angrily as it fought to right itself after missing its target. The only remaining flyer however swooped down from behind Shield and latched onto his back, screaming into his ear with a primal intensity that left his ears ringing. It bit his neck and flapped away, cackling in its inhuman babble. "Well, that went well," he sighed, watching with a slight satisfaction that the biter's time was dwindling down to nothing.

Neo continued to watch the monkeys quite literally murder themselves on Shield's armor. It was a strange sight to see them causing so much harm to a stronger target when Neo was clearly the better target to choose. Not wanting to complain about it though, she quickly followed Shield's instructions. She went for the weakened monkey that didn't have poison flowing through its veins now. Of course, she had to pick a time like this to completely whiff her attack. She decided to make her way behind Shield as deftly as possible and let the monkeys die by his retaliation instead. She would have to ask someone if there was a place where she could just train up her weapon. Perhaps then she could be a bit more use in a fight. As it stood, Neo was practically doing nothing to help, Shield was taking everything down. Hopefully she wasn't just slowing him down by making him guard against the attacks.

The fight was nearly at its end now, or so Shield hoped. The troop of monkeys circled back around, charging the tank with fierce determination despite their losing strategy. Shield relaxed, sitting back on his back foot a little further. The first monkey struck his barrier and burst into light shards. The second, its health dwindling to nothing, followed suit despite not even touching Shield this time. The final monkey, blinded by the storm of shards left behind by its fallen companions, flapped angrily in circles, swiping at its eyes with its gnarled hands.

Shied gave Neo a glance and a nod. With only one monkey left standing, and almost all of its health bled away, suggestions on tactics were no longer necessary. He stepped to the side, allowing Neo full access to the battlefield without restriction, preparing himself to step back in as soon as Neo had taken her next strike, just in case she did not connect and finish the job. It had been nearly as grindy as his first time fighting them. Still, having company this time made it slightly less irritating.

The monkeys continued to attack Shield without a worry in the world. It was still just as disconcerting to see the enemies throw themselves against the stronger of their foes. She would probably never really get used to it, even though she was certain it was fairly common to watch that happen. As the last monkey began to go reeling backwards, Neo noticed the glance and nod from Shield. A smirk formed on her face, she didn't need to told twice. Leaping into the air after the monkey, she charged up one large thrust. The sword pierced all the way through the monster, causing it to shatter like all the others before. As Neo came down for a landing, she quickly tumbled and slowly clambered back up. It could've been a bit better, but she still had a smile on her face. She was proud not only to have finally done something to this game but also to have not just been the one to slow down their fight. That wasn't to say she wouldn't just become a burden later on, but she would hopefully be able to still do some damage against the mobs they were facing.

Shield extended his hand out to give Neo his customary congratulatory fist bump. It was not the most difficult fight of the quest, but it was still a decent performance. "We have the witch and her elites next," he said, pointing up to the tall spire of the witch's castle in the distance. "Since your health and energy are both in pretty good shape, I'd recommend pushing onward. We'll knock this out in no time!"

He led the way, trudging through the haze that began to thicken on the ground around them. The journey was not a long one, and with the monkeys on the outside already dealt with, the gates stood unguarded. Shield walked through them, pushing open the massive front gate with a little effort. He walked down the main hall, up a spiral staircase, retracing the now familiar path up to the witch's workshop. Without so much as a knock, he kicked in the front door and strode into the room.

The witch was hunched over her cauldron, caught off guard as she gazed dumbfounded at the players. She shook her head and straightened up. "Welcome my pretties, I-" her eyes fell on Shield and she squinted. "Hold on... oh no. Not you again. Don't you ever get tired of bothering me?"

Shield took in a sharp breath, during which the witch grimaced and covered her ears in anticipation. Two much taller and more muscular monkeys, one on either side of the room, took to the air to defend their mistress. "Nooooooope!" Shield bellowed, plastering the elite flyers to the wall behind the witch. They blinked, completely blind-sided by the blast of air and sound. "Neo, I'd say focus the witch. She's going to take the longest to kill by a long shot!"

With the monkeys down, Neo let out a quiet breath of relief. She didn't notice Shield's fist extended for a bit, then rushed to quickly give him a fist bump. She wasn't really used to anyone really offering her much more than just a handshake, and that was only for formal occasions that required it. They were able to make their way into the tower without further incident, and Neo ended up just trying not to get too scared. She had one of the best tanks in the game protecting her, but that didn't mean she could remain safe. Once they made their way to the Witch, she seemed to recognize Shield. And once the fight began, Neo immediately lunged for her. Her blade struck the witch, but seemed to do nothing against her. Backing up behind Shield, Neo gave him a worrying glance. it seemed as though they were going to be slowly chipping her down with his damage reflection.

Shield watched as Neo's attack passed through the witch with next to no impact. Before he had a chance to act, the witch brushed past Neo, clawing at Shield with her long nails and screeching at the top of her lungs. "Why won't you just die!?" she shrieked, trying to sink her nails into his eyes, but failing to find purchase on his face, instead raking down his shoulders. The elite monkeys spun through the air, appearing at either of Shield's shoulders and clawing at him as well. The first failed to land a solid slash, with the second reeled back, nursing its scratched and burned hands.

"See if this is a little better!" Shield called, pushing his attackers back easily with his shield. He focused his attention now to the tip of his sword where a bead of red light gathered. The light formed into a sphere that he tossed to Neo, upping her damage once again. "It's not a lot, but it should get you through her defenses at least!" He assessed the state of the fight. Neo seemed shaken, but one of the elites was already nearly half dead, and the witch had a good chunk of her health missing. "Stay alert! This fight is already off to a good start!"
