  • Potion of Fireball:  MD 9 - 120 AoE dmg + 24 burn dmg for 2 turns.
  • Poisoned Dagger: MD 10 - Lands critical hit on the player that has dealt the most damage to her. Player is paralyzed 1 turn and takes 16 poison dmg for 3 turns.
  • Unnatural Swiftness: At 200 HP and below, she drinks a potion to grant her +1 eva for the rest of the fight.

The witch was still down and Neo hoped to capitalize on that. While she was preparing to attack though, two things happened. First was that she was handed another red orb by Shield, which she promptly used to gain that little bit of extra damage that seemed to let her cut through the witch's defenses and do some damage. Secondly, she had to start containing some laughter at the sight of the witch spasming out and dropping a potion on herself while still paralyzed. Another one of those little corner cases the developers didn't think would happen. She remember a boy she thought was cute showing some video that was only things like this. It was actually quite funny, and the memory brought a smile back to her face as she slowly calmed down from the strange sight. Something she had been missing ever since remembering about her closest friend's death.

They were in the home stretch, with only a little bit of the witch's health left to whittle down. Shield decided that it would be a good time to try to get a jump on that last little bit. He lowered himself into a ready stance, prepared to parry and retort the witch's claws once again. However, it was not claws that came his way. As the witch stood, she snatched another phial off of the shelves and hurled it towards the center of the room. He braced himself, sacrificing his offensive stance to throw himself in front of Neo.

The flames licked at his sides, taking a slight cut into his health, but overall having as little effect as the witch's claws. "You know, I think one of these days I might need to pick up an offensive sword art," he sighed, glancing over to Neo. "We're getting there. This is pretty normal, I'm afraid." He turned his eyes back to the witch, glaring at her as the last of the flames died away in the room's center. "And this is again why I say that I don't mind you stunning her, cuz I'm not always guaranteed my defensive damage. Damage is damage is damage."

With the witch back up and moving, Neo was wary of whatever actions she may cause against them. One of which was her trying to dodge the potion she threw at the two of them. Though Neo was not going to have been able to react in time, Shield was able to thwart off the attack by sacrificing the retaliation he was going to have gotten. Silently thanking him as best as she could in the fight, she returned to trying to hit the Witch. They were moving much quicker now though, so Neo was unable to actually get an attack off in her direction. Retreating back towards the defensive line of Shield, she gave him a glance saying that she was trying her best. There wasn't much she could do, and she should've tuned her build a bit better. It was still in the early points of her leveling, but she did want to make sure that it wasn't a bad build before she ended up stuck with it.

Shield was less than concerned about Neo's build or having to take a few hits. He had designed his own build to be as self-sufficient as possible. He sent Neo another charge of red energy to boost her damage. "Having extra damage to help out is always appreciated, but I'm no stranger to the long gri-"

An icy something stuck him in the back, and he was unable to turn to look. "That's better," crooned the witch, stepping from behind Shield and slowly pacing around the tank. There was a smug look of satisfaction on her wart covered face. "Now we'll see how well you like being frozen in place! If you think you're going to best me a third time without my having to say something about it, you've got another thing coming, sonny!" Shield's eyes, the only parts of him capable of moving, rolled in his head with exasperation. The witch sheathed the dagger again and traced Shield's jaw with her clawed finger. "I hope you've got your affairs in order, my dear..."

Shield waited patiently, at least as patiently as he could. This was not the first time he had been immobilized, but it was still not something he was used to. Feeling powerless to move in a fight was never pleasant. His eyes watched the paralysis symbol in the top corner of his health gauge. He smirked on the inside as he saw the venom marker that had appeared on the witch's.

With the fight slowly dragging on and Shield reassuring Neo, she was trying to figure out how best to deal damage to the Witch. It seemed as though most any attack she actually did was ineffective against the magical protection the game had granted them. She had managed to get a few of her status effects to go off, though this time she was having difficulty finding the weak spots in the monster. As Shield was attacked, Neo thought she had found her opportunity, but instead ended up slipping on some of the residue one of the many broken vials of potion had left behind. As she was sitting there, she realized she shoudl've paid a bit more attention to her surroundings.

I really need to work on my fighting. I need to not be such a dead weight. I don't want someone to die protecting me, like Vanilla, or Amethyst. Why do so many die when I'm with them?

The witch continued to pace around Shield, smiling her smug smile and cackling softly to herself. "Where to  target first?" the cock AI pondered aloud. "Shall I slice your throat?" she said, dragging her razor sharp nails over Shield's exposed neck. "Shall I gouge out your eyes?" she held her fingers in front of hem. Shield rolled them again, but she took little mind. "No, I think I'll just give you a good one right..." she plunged her hand in Shield's stomach, "Here!" She withdrew her hand immediately, watching as almost all of her remaining health was drained at once. She snarled, "Oh come on!"

Even with two different stacking damage effects and an unprotected hit, Shield's overall health only suffered slightly more, ticking back up to almost the exact same point where it had sat ever since the monkeys were eliminated. The paralysis icon on his health gauge began to flash and then disappeared entirely. With a sigh, Shield rolled his neck and shoulders. "Neo, if you can land one more good hit, she's done. Between my venom and your bleed, that should drain her even if she can't land a hit. We're set."

As the Witch began to poke and prod at Shield, Neo stood in shock. Sure he didn't take much damage from the eventual attack to his stomach, but that would still have to hurt some. Even with the pain dampening the game gave, it couldn't dampen a stab to the gut like that. As retaliation, Neo quickly sprung in to take out the Witch, or at least try to. She didn't seem to be ready, and was able to be caught off guard this time. Neo quickly stabbed her in the other eye, effectively blinding her now. The game would probably still give her a sense of sight through its sensors, but Neo got the satisfaction of knowing that the witch no longer had eyes. Her status effects also took hold of the witch, the electricity of the paralyze and the draining health bar of the bleed. She wasn't certain, but this witch was likely going to be dead before she could attack again.

Shield cracked into a legitimate smile and slid his sword into the strap of his shield. "Well done!" he boomed, extending a fist for Neo to bump as the witch stood motionless, her little remaining health dwindling away. "At this point, she'll shatter just as she gets her mobility back. See what I mean? Damage is damage is damage!" He walked up to the witch and flicked her nose. Her eyes followed Shield, glowering at him the whole time. "We just need to wait around for the loot drop."

He took a seat on the floor, his legs crossed and his hands leaning on his knees. "For someone who isn't leveled for a fight of this caliber, you held your own quite well. A little bit of damage over time is always helpful. At low levels especially, it's a smart move. It's the easiest way to get through defenses since that damage bypasses the mitigation altogether." Shield stretched out his arms and his back, twisting slightly to either side. "I'm not a huge fan of grind fests like that, but I am used to them. I've completed most of the quests I do solo, so I've had to do plenty of this by now. Including this quest itself." He gestured to the paralyzed witch who continued to glare at the back of his head.

With the Witch reeling, Neo prepared to take another swing at her. Shield instead just had her wait back, offering a fist-bump. Neo timidly bumped fists with Shield, and blushed a little at his compliment. She was honestly still not certain how her build would really work at all. All she knew was that it was something she hadn't seen anyone else using. None of the info brokers really had a guide on the status effects and from what she knew of the front-lines, no one there used it either. She didn't feel like she handled the fight too well, but she was still alive and unharmed thanks to Shield's protection. Sitting down next to Shield, she grabbed herself a small sandwich from her inventory and began to eat into it. Nothing that fancy, but tasted better than a lot of things made by NPCs. Not many people ever ordered from her shop, but at least she could make some stuff for herself and not get rusty.

Behind Shield, the witch gave a roar of anger, lurching forward just as her health dropped to zero. She swung her arm, but the only thing to reach Shield was a wave of light shards that washed over him and melted away. "There's something very satisfying about that timing working out that way." He stood up and stretched, turning to glance at the congratulatory banner that sprang to life in midair. He reached down to offer Neo a hand up, smiling as he saw the crafting consumable appear in the loot readout. "And that's what we came for."

He turned toward the exit and made his way out, moving at a much more leisurely pace now that the quest mobs were all defeated. "So what are your aims, Neo?" Shield asked. "Everyone has different ideas of what they hope to accomplish along the way to floor 100. I've tackled a lot of mine already. What about yours?" His gait was brisk, careful not to get too far ahead of Neo as he led her out of the castle's front gate and back into the woods, now much more peaceful without flapping wings and monkey screeches echoing out of the darkness. Overhead, the moon began peeking out from behind tree branches up through the dead canopy.

The witch dissipated into the shards of light and Shield helped Neo get up. She confirmed the reward of the quest, and saw the crafting consumable pop into her inventory. It was going to be quite useful in the future. She didn't think she would want to use it now, but perhaps later when she could craft more quickly she could use it. As the two of them made their way out of the castle, she contemplated how to answer Shield's question. It took until they were outside of the castle for Neo to write out her response to him.

@Shield

I don't have many things in mind. The only major goal I have right now is tracking down the people who killed my friend. The memory resurfaced after I had repressed it for years, and now I want to do what I should've done a long time ago. I don't wish to kill them, but they need to pay for what they did.

Shield read through Neo's response, frowning slightly at her answer. "Revenge is a nasty endeavor," he said plainly, flicking through menus to trade out his defensive gear for detection. "It can consume you. Even if your goal is not to kill." Shield was unsure of how to express the exact concerns without sounding cliche and obvious. "I guess I just mean that, if it were me, I wouldn't want my loved ones taking undue risk to follow up on my death in a way that, in the end, doesn't benefit me." It was blunt, but he hoped it would not sound judgmental. His tone was ever even and collected, more matter of fact than preachy.

"In any case, I think I'm going to try to track down a little more loot," he said, fixing the earring that he wore. "That consumable is nice, but new gear is new gear. You never know when you'll find that one in a million drop that makes or breaks your build." He knew what he was after, but it really was close to one in a million odds to find gear, identify it, and have the proper enhancements without detracting from his build. "In any case, what about the intent for your build? We all have plans for what we hope to accomplish on the battlefield, as well as in the game itself."

Neo just shrugged as Shield talked about not seeking revenge. Sure it may not be the healthiest option for her, but it gave her a reason to become more powerful. Vanilla deserved better than to be forgotten for years as she cried in alleyways in the Town of Beginnings. In the end, Neo didn't know what to do. She had so little reason to come to this game other than to speak, and even then she didn't wish to acknowledge the terrible price she had paid for that gift. In actuality, she was scared. Scared of her own death, making Vanilla's story die. No one else knew of her, except for maybe a few of the info brokers who made obituaries for the deaths of the early days. For all she knew, someone was trying to solve the mystery of Vanilla's killer, and Neo held the answers to that investigation. She kicked a rock away, not noticing the material hidden within.

The topic went stale and Shield took the hint. Not that Neo ever really vocalized, but she usually gave more than a shrug. Shield turned his eyes back to the darkening forest, glancing around for anything out of the ordinary. Sure enough, he soon saw the familiar glow of his Seeking Aura earring casting golden light onto the trail forest floor below him. Craning his neck, he soon spotted a small stand of trees growing close together. He stepped nearer, the closer he came, the brighter his trinket's glow.

As he rounded the first trunk, he came to a tangle of roots. Many of them were arranged with wide gaps in between, enough to fit through. Shield shrugged and crouched down, lowering himself between them until he could drop down into the earthen chamber below. The roots of the trees wove together into a set of lattice-work walls, enclosing a space with a large, wooden chest at the center. Shield smiled triumphantly and called up to Neo. "There's a chest! I'm gonna crack it open. Get ready to haul me up when I'm done!"

The two were moving along in Silence, and Neo just continued to be lost in thought. She likely would've continued that way until Shield started to veer off of the pathway back. Knwoing he was searching for a few items to find, Neo followed him until they made their way to a group of trees. There didn't seem to be anything to her, but Shield was likely seeing something different. He seemed to look through the roots, and eventually called out that he found a chest. Nodding to his request, Neo began to prepare a little bit of rope and tied it around one of the many trees nearby. She wasn't sure how well she would be able to haul him up, but she could at least give it a good try to make it easier for him. Surely the game wouldn't want to put something that gave loot in a place that was impossible to climb out of. Perhaps a place to kill you, but not one that would create a situation with no escape even in death.

Using Golden Key

Opening Chest:

ID# 109035 LD:15+7=22 CD:10 4,800 Col, 10 T3 Materials, 1 T3 Perfect Consumable, 2 T3 Perfect Weapon

Shield took out his ring of keys and selected a golden one, holding it up to the lock. With a tinkling of metal, the key vanished in a puff of gold dust, and the lid popped open. The familiar display window came up, listing the contents of the chest. Giving a wry smile, Shield selected the option to collect all of the contents, turning his back as the chest behind him shattered now that its inventory and stamina had been reduced to zero.

"Looks like you made out pretty well on this one," Shield called out. "Alright, I'm ready." He took a quick step and jumped, grabbing hold of the rope. He hauled his way up, clambering up out of the pit until he could reach one of the nearby roots and get a proper hand hold. From there, he pulled himself up high enough to find footing, and the climb was a cinch from there. It was not exactly a graceful exit, but it was good enough. "Thanks. You'll be pleased to know that there was not one but two perfect weapons and absolutely zero armor. If you don't mind, I think I'll let you keep the weapons and hold onto the rest myself. I tend to be a little too generous and rarely hold on to any Col myself, so this might be a blessing in disguise."

Neo raised an eyebrow as Shield called out, not sure what he meant by it. After he said he was ready, Neo did her best to help him out of the pit. Sure the game gave her a little bit of extra strength, but her size still meant that she couldn't do that much to help. Once he was up and had explained what he found, Neo gave a small grin. It was nice that Shield was so generous, and she didn't mind him keeping the rest for himself. What she had been looking for was the weapons, and she didn't really need the rest that would be found in a chest. She had no idea if it would do her any good to get them IDed now, but perhaps Shield would be kind enough to let her ID them with his consumable the two had just received. Regardless, he was the best person to go to right now if she wanted a good chance at getting the enhancements she had been looking for. Giving a quick nod to agree with his deal, Neo prepared to receive a trade invitation from Shield. Or maybe he would just drop the weapons on the ground. Neo had not done enough of this sort of thing to understand what was typically done in these situations.

Shield dusted himself off and opened a transfer window, sending the items over to Neo before closing out of his menus and stretching his neck. "Come on, I'll see you back to town," he said, motioning for her to follow and taking off back towards the main path. The walk was a quiet one, and Shield did not mind it terribly. Between the consumable and the extra loot from the chest, he had plenty of gains from his time out in the woods. Perhaps finding an armor would have sweetened the deal, but a perfect consumable was always useful. He put it out of mind for now.

They arrived at Coral with no troubles, the path being surprisingly clear for night time, even considering how relatively docile the twenty second floor was compared to its neighbors. Shield walked Neo to the teleportation plaza and gave her a little nod of his head. "This was productive, even if a little slow. You know where to go when you need those weapons appraised." He gave a little wave and turned towards the floor exit. "Bye for now." With that, he stepped into the teleporter and called out, "Eleventh floor! Taft!" He was enveloped in light, and by the time it had dissipated, he had gone.

The two were able to make their way towards the town in safety. There wasn't anything in their way on this rather peaceful floor. Sure it was unusual to encounter no more mobs, but Neo wasn't going to complain. Shield may be able to tank them for her, but she wouldn't be of much use in taking them down herself. Once in the town, Neo just nodded at his almost obvious request to bring the items to be identified at his shop. It wasn't like she had anything better in the way of merchants. Shield currently had control of the market, though there was another merchant who seemed to be ranking up at a decent pace. She waved as Shield left, likely for his shop or house. Once he had dissipated, Neo made her own way into the teleporter and navigated the menu. Selected the seventh floor to go to her shop, Neo mentally prepared herself for whatever orders may be waiting for her there.

Shield materialized once again in Taft, and he set out at once for home. It was still dark, so the going was a little slower, but he knew his way well enough by now. He drew nearer to the mountains, watching them as the moon began to slowly rise behind them. By the time he arrived back at his little gathering of buildings that made up his home and his shop, the moon was out completely, and it cast a dim glow over the scenery of his grounds. Stepping inside, he was just about to unequip his gear when he thought better of it

He stepped out into his side yard and took out his sword. There were no enhancements on the blade, but he wouldn't need any for the enemies he would be facing. He tripped the ground trigger and a dozen green blobs materialized out of the ground. "Got to keep up my experience gain. Can't get lazy just because I'm running out of quests." The slimes gibbered to themselves, wobbling about and bumping into one another, occasionally remembering to attack their quarry, only to be cut down and replaced by another identical slime. By the time Shield had had his fill, the moon was at its zenith. He sheathed his sword and returned inside. "Good enough. Time for bed."
