Hawthorne's Journal

Recommended Posts

Hawthorne is a lean young Caucasian man, only standing at 5'8" tall and weighing a mere 150 pounds, he has short black hair and dark brown eyes. He is trim and muscular, but doesn't have much mass or bulk to his wiry frame. He has a hard, clean shaven face- all firm bones and piercing eyes. He can seem grim or dour at times, but that's just how his face looks at its resting expression.

About: History/personality
Murdoch O'Doyle is a fiercely competitive person. Ever since he was a child he has spent the majority of his mental focus finding things he enjoys, and learning how to excel in doing those things. He found in elementary school that he thoroughly enjoyed competing against other children, and found his first great arena in tackle football. He followed his love for sports through his school career, finding also that he enjoyed mental competitions as he placed and won in spelling bees, debate contests, and chess championships through his childhood. He didn't find that he enjoyed what he saw as, "echo chamber intellectualism" that defined academia, wherein supposedly intelligent people are told to think and feel a certain way about a very few writings and philosophies from thousands of years ago and agree with the professor of his class so that he could pass. He gave the answers asked of him, dismissed academia as foolishness that had failed to keep up with a changing world, and looked for other pursuits worthy of his mind.
His love of competitive pursuits and eternally bored mind led him to professional gaming, wherein one must constantly find new ways to get one over the other players and adjust to an ever-changing game. He loved it, and became quite good at it, even landing a spot on a professional team. At that point, his hobbies took a turn for the physical. His job was solely a mental pursuit, but he grew restless only paying proper attention to that one part of himself, so he began hiking, swimming, fighting MMA at his local gym, and competing in airsoft tournaments. Ironically, his return to the physical world is what brought him irrevocably into the virtual one. Akihiko Kayaba, the developer of Sword Art Online, put on an open tournament to build excitement for the already awaited release of his game- a 5 day long free for all in the Rocky Mountains. Players had to travel, camp, fight, and ultimately, be the last player standing, to claim victory. Players were to be armed with their choice of the provided weapons (all nonlethal synthetics, of course), told to gather their camping supplies, and sent into the mountains. This sounded like a competition he was born for, combining the physical abilities he'd developed with the tactical sense he'd learned from his gaming career, he could genuinely win, so he packed up for the week and drove to the Rockies. Five days later, he'd personally beaten fifty-seven other people in combat, ambushed another forty-two, gotten only fifteen total hours of sleep, and come out on top. The grand prize was a substantial amount of prize money, plus a copy of Sword Art Online. On Launch Day, Murdoch leapt into the World of Sword Art Online eager to find challenges to overcome and intricacies of the world to learn, only to find that was all he'd be doing for quite a while. He dove in and hasn't looked back.

Virtues

Excellence- Murdoch loves learning and honing skills, and he'll work tirelessly to unlock new potential. Once he knows how to do something, he focuses on becoming the best he can be at that thing, preferring to focus on one skill at a time when he can manage it. He is only temporarily satisfied with any level of ability he believes lower than his greatest potential.

Bravery- Murdoch does not shy away from challenge, knowing that he'd rather try and possibly fail than stagnate at his current level of ability. He is willing to risk much to gain much, and will put himself in danger and through pain to do what he must- mostly gaining strength and clearing the game, at the moment.

Cunning- Murdoch knows that sheer determination isn't always the right tool for the task at hand. He will change up his tactics when he finds that one method doesn't work, not wanting to stick and be unable to proceed because he refuses to adapt. He looks for the path of least resistance, seeking ways around problems rather than through them whenever possible.

Flaws:

Selfish- Murdoch didn't become great at One-versus-Many competitive tournaments by being naturally giving. He will work with others when he can see a clear and concrete reason to do so, but if he doesn't stand to gain from his risks, he simply doesn't make those risks. This makes him a poor team player unless he knows the capabilities of those working with him, and trusts them to accomplish what they intend.

Antisocial- Murdoch isn't inclined to hang out with groups of people, chit chat, or gather with others for any unnecessary reason. He can work with others to achieve a common goal, but the act of working with others doesn't naturally come to him. He likes to keep his social interactions businesslike and to the point, eschewing social pretense and focusing instead on what the people around him actually WANT.

Elitist- Murdoch doesn't understand how others can stand to be mediocre rather than their strongest, and tends to hold those who don't improve on their mistakes in low regard. He might even be openly disdainful with those who are lazy, or content with a level of ability that he would call, "weak". He will not charitably aid those he believes will waste his efforts with their weakness or continued failures.
