{F21-PP} A Peculiar Compromise <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

A Cavern! And a lonely one at that. Pinball had been looking for just the thing.
See, he needed Col. Badly. While he had a penchant for sleeping around in unusual places, he was driven more than a bit paranoid when he had to make sure his sleep was constantly broken up into segments so as to avoid being caught unawares. He was only wanted for questioning, he knew, but the last thing he wanted was to wake up in chains. So Pinball's sleep for the past few weeks has been made up more of naps than any healthy, long rest; and it showed in the way he walked, talked, and carried himself. His temper was short, and his attention span was shorter, but Pinball had dedicated himself to this task.
He needed to save up for a place to stay. A safe place he could sleep, a place that nobody knew about. He stood, gazing about the Cavern, locking on to the odd mob here and there. He'd probably lead a group of them into a cluster and then have his way with them like that. His thoughts drifted to the Demonic spear in his inventory, and he squinted his eyes. He didn't want to use it. He had fought with Mars, and been forced to fight with his spear on some occasions, but it was always a horrible experience that Pinball regretted taking part of at all. So, even though it still made him a bit uncomfortable, he equipped his old staff that functioned like a spear. He planted the butt of it into the ground, opened his inventory, and materialized a potion in his hand.
He started to think up a plan of attack as he drank.

Neo had made her way towards the twenty-first floor once more. It was something that she was prone to od, just wander aimlessly about and stop for some fishing. It helped to clear her mind. That was getting harder and harder to do though as she kept making memories here. There was the time she nearly watched a level 10 player die to a goblin. There was also the time that she had fallen in love with Hazado. That wedding was going to be soon, she should probably prepare. But for now, she just wanted to get some more gathering done.

Walking towards the familiar cave system that she knew had some increased drop rates, Neo noticed that like many times before, she wasn't here alone.l It appeared that an orange player was here as well. Her parasol was black as she flipped it over her shoulder. Though she thought about using her sneak skill to sneak up behind them, she decided against it. She had met a few orange players, and for the most part they seemed nice. Of course, that wasn't to say that they hadn't done terrible things, but she knew that people could change. Instead what she did was simply walked up to the side of them, not speaking a word, and lean against the side of the cave's entrance. Waiting to see how long it would take for them to notice her presence, Neo looked into the cave to make sure there wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

Pinball gave his spear an impatient tap. He squinted, looking the weapon up and down. It was weird. It didn't radiate the same icy aura Cold Fervor did, and it didn't even have the same weight or feel to it. His spear had a leather grip. His staff was just smooth, carved wood. He grit his teeth. But it was too similar. And while the memories that arose when he held the weapon weren't as debilitating as those he felt when he actually considered wielding his Demonic weapon, but it still made him very uncomfortable.
But there were things he needed to do. He needed a place to stay. Somewhere to stay - somewhere he could safely and comfortably put his head for the night. Trees and grass and rocks and balled up cloaks made uncomfortable pillows, and he only ever really found himself sleeping when he passed out from exhaustion.
For that, he needed money.
He materialized one of his cakes. He was hungry, and was going to need the buffs anyway.
Tired blue eyes searched the clearing around him, looking for a cluster of mobs that had spawned close together - and came to rest on a single player, standing off to the side.
Pinball frowned, lifted his staff, and let the weapon rest across his shoulders. He didn't speak, but he stared. Is she here to try and take me in?

It didn't take too long before Neo was noticed. Though she had yet to find herself some suitable clothes to match the appearance of her corrupted parasol, she still seemed to be a bit darker than usual. Perhaps it was the influence of the weapon, or maybe the game was finally getting to her. Realizing that the orange player was Pinball, Neo debated about trying to drag him in for the Aincrad Police Department. SHe honestly had no clue what he did to get on their wanted posters, though rumor had it he had attacked some tier one players. He had the orange cursor to prove it, but for all she knew, the APD would try and kill him for something like that. As much as she wanted to make sure PKers couldn't thrive, she had no intention of killing any of them unless they went after her or her friends. That was the reason there was only two people in mind that she wanted dead, and Pinball was not one of them. Instead, she just gave a smile and a wave towards him.

She smiled and waved. Pinball stared for a second.
That seems fake.
But he turned, gripping his weapon tightly. It was Neopolitan. He had only seen the girl fight once, and it was only just briefly. But Pinball had a feeling he would be able to get away - she wasn't somebody who could kill him easily. Not yet, anyway. Pinball didn't bank on survivability, but... that wasn't something he wanted to think about right now. Instead, he tried to turn his attention back to searching out a group of monsters... and couldn't focus. He was too worried about how he had exposed his back, so he kept glancing back over at the girl, not wanting to let her get a free shot at him when he wasn't paying attention. So instead he turned around to face her, letting his weight lean into his staff.
"I'm not moving 'til you do somethin'," he grumbled.
He opened his inventory, and lazily materialized an Apple Cider. He uncorked the jar and started to drink. It was both precaution and preperation for whatever might happen next.

Neo could still see that pinball was suspicious. She would be too in his position. Most people who were wanted would probably be watching their backs constantly. She was surprised she could sneak up on him at all without using her skill. Though it was fine of him to be suspicious, Neo just rolled her eyes at his comment. She didn't mean any harm to him. Quickly composing a message, she sent it off towards him. Hopefully the two of them could work together with this and then they would be able to actually get something done rather than stand here like a pair of idiots wanting to get killed by goblins.

Quote

TO: Pinball

I'm not here to turn you in. I'm here to farm for some unidentified weapons and materials. You seem to be here to farm as well so let's work together. I know you probably don't want to trust anyone, but believe me when I say I don't feel like dealing with the politics going on between cliques. I was on the brunt end of that enough

Pinball let his staff fall to the floor. He still didn't trust her. And it'd be easy to lead him into a trap, he knew; if she let him start fighting a group, and then paralyzed him, it'd be all too easy for the monsters to have a field day. Still, though, that was what he had Teleportation Crystals for, he knew. But he honestly wasn't comfortable with risking his health like that.
So if she tried anything, he'd make sure she didn't bother him again.
He visibly flinched at that thought, and he felt a pit in his chest. He didn't like that. He turned his head. I'll trust you.
With that, Pinball found a cluster of goblinoid figures in the not-so-distant distance. Pinball charged. His spear struck out, sending blasts of radiant energy into the sides of the pale cave goblins. Some were sent skidding across the floor while some just dropped prone under the impact, but all of them were stunned after his initial strike.

It was plain by Pin's reaction that he didn't trust her, and Neo felt a little bit hurt because of it. She let him lead the way towards a group of goblins though, finally engaging her hide skill as he took the first charge. it was powerful to see so much damage done in one hit, though Neo did remind herself she had seen others hit a little bit harder. of course, it seemed as though Pinball was holding himself back for the time being. Maybe if she fought with him a bit longer, she could coax him into showing his true power. Staying on the outskirts of the fight and out of sight, Neo made sure to jump in in case things began to go south. for now, she would just watch and learn from one of the many players above her level. A number that was slowly but surely dwindling.

He took another step back. As usual, his Stun didn't last too long. Pinball glanced around his shoulder, but found Neopolitan nowhere. He found himself glaring at nothing. I swear to God, if she tries to...
Pinball gave his staff an angry twirl, catching it mid-flip, and then threw himself into Weeping Moon again. There was the sound of his boots hitting the stone, and then there was a grunt as Pinball lashed out with his weapon, surely striking fear in whatever little hearts those virtual goblins had.
His spear hit each one of the goblins in rapid succession. Two took swings at him, and Pinball hopped back twice too, their claws or daggers or whatever those little pointy things they gripped were missing him by a long shot... but the last one jumped at him, and before Pinball could move swung that sharp point into his shoulder.
Pinball cursed, throwing the monster off. "Bastard," he grumbled, taking another step back. He murmured to himself. "Out of practice.

Neo watched as Pinball continued to whittle down the goblins. There was still no need for her intervention, but she was going to be there in the chance that pinball missed. She knew he probably had a lot of accuracy stacked up, so it was going to be a small wonder for him to miss. It would happen eventually though, which is where Neo would come from and take the advantage. Knowing how wary pinball was, he was probably a little freaked out by her sudden vanishing. She had no intention to harm him, but she would never say as much. Leaving him on his toes was a bit of fun after all. And perhaps if he did decide it was best to kill any witnesses, Neo was ready to run away if he started looking for her instead of fighting monsters. That was certainly a two way street of course. there wasn't much one could do to stop the other from getting away.

Well, by the looks of it, Neo didn't have any intention of returning to his field of vision. "By the looks of it" was a funny thing to think when he couldn't actually see the thing in question. Pinball blinked. He was tired. If he wasn't in the middle of fighting, he'd probably fall asleep if he just sat down for a moment. He really needed more sleep - but he didn't have a safe place to do it, and the... dreams made it hard to even when he did. He shook off the thought, though, since it probably wasn't in his best interests to get distracted in the middle of a fight.
He threw himself into his attack. He collided with the group of goblins for one last, final exhange - if you could call it that. They didn't put up much of a fight when their bodies burst into pixels, their goblinoid faces twisted in whatever expression of horror they could muster. Pinball took a step back as a rewards screen blazed to life in front of him, his rewards accumulating as the transluscent polygonal bits of data faded into nothingness.

Neo continued to watch as Pin slew all of the goblins that were around. She was mildly impressed by his performance, but what else was there to expect from someone high level that was also fighting mobs that were likely just at or below their own level. What would matter would be how well he kept it up. Though she could help out, Neo felt as though that would probably just slow the player down. Instead, she kept to the shadows, letting her hide skill conceal her from sight. Pinball was probably rightfully worried about her sneaking up on him, but he didn't need to worry. Unless he came after her, she saw no reason to attack him. The blade inside of her parasol was feeling different, but Neo did her best to quiet it down. It may want the blood of whomever it can get, but Neo knew that there was more to this game than bloodshed.

He glanced around, but didn't really search for the girl who had up and vanished. if she wanted a fight, she wouldn't find one with him. Pinball frowned. He didn't care about the things he fought and killed anymore. They were just chunks of code. The "thrill of the hunt" had left him... at least, that's what he told himself.
Pinball got into a ready stance as more Cave Goblins approached the largely unarmored boy. They came at him quickly, and Pinball rushed forward to meet them. His spear lashed out quickly, knocking Goblin, left and right aside, sending them skidding across the stone like ragdolls are whacking them so hard they just hit the ground and stayed there. It was kind of fun, in a morbid way. A sadistic way? Pinball didn't have the words, really, but it was basically the equivalent to smacking a baseball out of the park. Their health dropped significantly, and Pinball knew from his last fight that he'd only have to hit them twice more to reap his rewards.

There was little for Neo to actually do. SHe wasn't going to be needed for now, however much her rapier felt differently. Unless Pin missed one of the creatures, they would be going down just as fast whether she had tagged along or not. And at this rate, it was going to be a small miracle for Pinball to miss one in the first place. It was appearing to be more and more that she was slowing the fights down rather than actually helping out. But at least she was there for backup in case things went Awry. Not that she had seen pin get anything of value to her anyways. She was still looking to find that  perfect piece of gear for her to use. Until that had been found though, there was little else for her to do but sit and wait inside of these shadows. These, dusty, boring shadows.

Pinball was looking to make this exchange just as brief as the last. He readied his weapon. He hadn't missed one of the little goblin creeps yet, but he'd been hit once as well. When you balanced those two things against each other, though, he wasn't doing too bad. Especially - and he almost grinned to himself just thinking about it - when he had made that much money from just four monsters. He'd need to go grinding more often! He needed it, or would need it, surely. He liked having a fat wallet.
Pinball threw himself into Weeping Moon, bracing himself for impact as the system yanked his body through the motions. He didn't think much about it. It was just the same thing he had been doing, and it would be over soon, and they'd be dead, just like all the others. Some more mobs slain for those juicy... numerical values?

Continuing to lurk within the shadows, Neo felt the tug of her weapon hiding within the sheathe of her parasol. It thirsted for blood, any blood. She didn't even know how it knew the taste of blood. This game had no gore settings to it at all, just some occasional blood effects for sideshow stuff. None of the enemies actually spewed blood when cut, it was just red lines everywhere. Thinking about it, that was actually quite odd. There was a bleed effect that her other rapier had, but that caused no bleeding animation.

Yanking herself out of that mental rabbit hole before going down it too far, Neo watched as Pinball continued to slay goblin after goblin. There was definitely no shortage of these guys, and he was hitting them continuously. She would probably get a break from all this hiding when he ran out of energy. Not that that would last very long before he was back to fighting.

And with that previous sweeping attack, they were all on their last legs. Pinball let himself take a few confident steps backwards, his spear twirling overhead. He twirled his spear a lot. He should stop that. Stop twirling it. Yeah. He let it fall to rest at his side, though he kept his grip on it tight and true. The Cave Goblins shuffled in place, their grotesque forms hunched over. Their sniveling and drooling was almost comical, and their ashy grey skin and pitch black eyes, further accented by sharpened yellow teeth really drove home the "cave" aspect of the mobs. But look at what he was doing - analyzing the monster design in a video game. You'd think he belonged on Reddit, arguing with some other egotistic neckbeard hundreds of miles away. Pinball threw himself once more into an attack, and his thoughts quickly shifted to the rewards he was about to be reaping.

Once again seeing Pinball take out all the goblins currently in sight, Neo decided she should come out of her stealth for a little bit. At the very least to let Pinball know that she was still there as backup. He was probably starting to get a little bit tired. After all, she knew that he couldn't go on forever. At the very least, she knew that the two of them should be able to keep fighting for quite some time. Though she didn't know what Pinball's regenerative capabilities were, they couldn't be much slower than hers. In fact, his were probably faster as she was a lower level than him. Hopefully he would notice her waving, and giving him a thumbs up. Maybe he was just too absorbed to actually see that she was trying to encourage him. And maybe he was just not wanting to acknowledge her presence. Either way, she was ready in case he began to mess up.

And with them dead, it was time for Pinball to rest. He took a step back from the cloud of pixels that had erupted in his attack's wake. All four of them dead in the span of a few seconds. Not bad by any means, but he knew that weapons like the Battleaxe were infamous for getting that kind of thing over with faster. Still, he was making money, and that's what mattered.
He glanced to Neo, who, emerging from the shadows. At least she hadn't tried to hurt him. Pinball let a hand slide over the wound on his shoulder, a glaring red gash in his black shirt and the pads of leather he wore as "armor". The Cave Goblin's dagger had pierced straight through it, as if there was nothing even there. He sighed. If the leather did nothing to cushion blows he was dealt, what was the point in even wearing it? Maybe he could find some sort of ring or necklace to wear instead. Then it wouldn't even be as uncomfortable to deal with.

Pinball didn't seem to be doing too well, but Neo figured he would be fine. He had taken the one pretty bad hit from the goblins, and his armor seemed to do nothing to stop it. She wasn't sure why, probably something to do with his refusal to wear armor in the first place. It meant the game didn't want to give him the benefits of wearing it. Either he would get used to wearing armor and that would increase his damage deflection, or he would just give up on it out of frustration. He certainly didn't seem to be the type to have any patience for these things.

Neo's parasol was open over her shoulder, gleaming black from the crystalline glow of the room. It was strange that her parasol had immediately turned black the moment she equipped the angel's weapon. And though she couldn't see it, there was thin tendrils of black beginning to climb up the arm holding the parasol. Some strange force trying to corrupt Neo in her entirety.

Her necklace grew slightly warm, but then it faded into nothingness. Looked like there was just a slight reaction to the loot of the goblins they were facing.
