{SP-F21} No More Grinding <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

He'd come here three times now, and truth be told, Pinball was getting kind of tired of it. The same old caverns and the same old damp, slick, cold stone walls. The same foreboding and ominous underground ambience probably shoehorned into the game as white noise in a half-assed attempt to make the area more "spooky" or whatever. All it really did was annoy Pinball. It used to frighten him when he was of a lower level, but that was like... months ago. And he had seen and done much scarier things than fight off a couple of cave goblins or frogs or whatever the hell it was he fought on this floor. He'd seen plenty, but nothing he had had trouble mopping the floor with. It was with a reluctant sigh that Pinball entered the familiar cavern, searching for his prey. He'd be making some more money today, but after that, he didn't want to have to do anything for a while. Hopefully he'd be able to rest for a few days without being bothered by those dreams.

He took a second to analyze his surroundings. Same, boring rocks and the same, boring bluish hue to the darkness. There were splotches of color here and there, the dark illuminated by patches of neon mushrooms that glowed and cast strangely colored lights in a radius. It was bright enough to see, though, and that's what mattered. Pinball tapped his spear against the ground and then opened his inventory. Scrolling through the UI with quick fingers, Pinball materialized, one by one, the buffs he was going to need for the upcoming fighting. He pulled out his Apple Cider and his cake, and then his potion and chocolate coin. This coin, though, was different from the other three he had crafted. It was filled with caramel! One of the perks of buying a house with a kitchen, apparently, and Pinball was all for taking advantage of it. He started to eat and drink, savoring the cake and apple cider and chocolate and choking the potion down after. He should really start trying to drink the potion before the good stuff.

And with that, Pinball threw himself into combat. His boots hit the floor hard, echoing in the cavern as he charged. He held his spear - no, his staff, low and by his side, but his grip never faulted. As he jumped into Weeping Moon, he knew that his aim wouldn't either. He struck each Glow Frog one after the other, his weapon smacking into each one of their small, slimy, amphibian forms. They were sent flying, where they hit the stone and skidded across the stone. In turn, they were all stunned and rendered immobile, leaving Pinball standing alone in a group of motionless Glow Frogs. While it was a successful exchange, and he knew that he would be making some good money with their deaths, he couldn't help but feel as though that the means didn't really justify the end. Wait, no, what the hell did that mean? Pinball squinted.

As the Glow Frogs shook off their stun and Pinball was left dead in the center of the eyes of four, stupid looking amphibians, he took a defensive stance. He held his spear, raising it up to about chest-level, his grip on the smooth oak weapon tight and unyielding. He looked all around him. He was in the thick of it now, but was that really so bad? He was quick, and he was practiced, and the Glow Frogs were sluggish and not at all dangerous on their own. In groups like they were, though... he flinched at the thought, recalling the time he had been dogpiled by the monsters. His health had suffered then, and he wasn't too keen on letting that moment become a reality once again. As they hopped toward him, their wet feet slapping against the stone ground, Pinball rushed out to meet them, his bo staff lashing out with a vengeance.

Their health was in the red and steadily waning. Pinball prepared himself. They were already on their last legs - one more hit and they'd shatter into a cloud of those transluscent polyognal shards, useless bits of data turned into nothing more than a bit of extra cash in his pocket. The teenager's tired blue eyes looked his opponents over, their stupid, slimy faces and lolling tongues urging him forward. Pinball met them as they inched closer to him, his staff whipping out to meet them as they approached. One jumped and landed near his boot. Like a soccer ball, Pinball kicked it up into the air and smacked it to death in a single swing like he was using a baseball bat. The second approached, and he jerked to the side, sending his staff out into a jab that impacted the frog's face and sent his eyes so far back into its body it would have had a good view of its feet. The third died in a similar fashion, but the fourth - that bastard - somehow managed to elude him.

He gave his weapon a twirl, catching the staff mid-swing to point at the enemy in front of him. He took a breath. He had to remind himself; these things were dangerous. No matter how stupid or harmless they looked, he knew from personal experience that the kicks of their legs were like the punch of an arrow and the slash of their tongues was sharper than most razors. The light dangling in front of their eyes, attached to their head by some sort of thin appendage, like an angler fish, did nothing to blind them. That much he knew. Pinball threw himself forward, looking to end the fight in a single thrust of his weapon. In a blast of bright energy, Pinball was confident his attack had struck... until he instinctually glanced to the right, and the Glow Frog was sitting there unharmed. The tip of his weapon slowly went to meet the floor as Pinball stared, incredulous.

Well, there was no harm in trying again. Pinball let himself take a few steps backwards. He needed room to strike, and he wanted to see just how the hell this stupid, sluggish looking frog had managed to evade his previous strike. Was it quicker than it looked? He had, in past fights, been surprised by the speed some mobs seemingly hid. He had learned the hard way that it probably wasn't a good idea to underestimate creatures in that regard. Still, though, by all means and rights, this thing should have been dead by now. It should have been dead a long time before. The boy's eyes slowly began to narrow as he brought his spear up, focusing. He remained fixed in place, motionless, until in a sudden burst he let himself fly forward, his staff thrusting into the Glow Frog's small form in a burst of bright red energy. He felt the impact this time, and he saw the blue shards that once was the monster's body floating in the air beside him.

As soon as the first group of Glow Frogs had been wiped out, the next took their place. Pinball readied his weapon, reacting to their hops in a way that ensured he struck first. And he struck fine and true - his weapon whacked against frog after frog, sending them all sprawling across the cave floor. Just like the ones before them, and just like the ones that would come after them. Pinball took a deep breath, watching their health plummet... and then he watched them shake the stun off, and get back onto their stupid little skinny feet, turning their huge heads to regard Pinball with amphibious eyes. He snorted. Whatever. They'd die soon, and Pinball would be able to dip. Finally. Thank God. He jumped in place, giving his spear a test by twirling it around his head and shoulders. That'd get their attention. Hopefully he could wrap this up nicely.

They had successfully shaken off their stuns now, but that didn't phase Pinball in the slightest. He had fought too much and experienced too much at this point to be put off by a couple of frogs - no matter how hard their legs might kick. He'd survive this. He'd push through like he always did. So as they approached, bounding over to Pinball with a vicious intent, he simply stood his ground, making sure his stance was steady and firm. He deflected their attacks, tongue and leg alike, with a flick of his spear or a quick kick of his boot. His movements were fluid and confident, honed by months and months of fighting with the assistance of Cardinal. They were burned into his memory, and he knew how to take advantage of the featherweight feeling that came with being an unarmored frontliner. He returned each deflected blow in kind, but with his own signature ruthless ferocity.

They were starting to panic now, it felt like. He didn't know whether it was the way they seemed to shake as they hit the ground or the hesitation behind each one of their once reckless attacks. Whatever. They wouldn't be left standing in a few seconds anyway. He easily evaded the hopping monsters with a few backward jumps of his own, his spear held loose in his right hand. Pinball snorted. Too slow. The other groups had landed a few lucky shots on him earlier, but these guys were kind of pathetic, weren't they? Pinball sighed. No fun... why was he enjoying the fighting? Was it really this fun? Was it supposed to be, in their situation? Pinball didn't want to think about it, so he didn't. Instead, he went through the process of tagging the four standing Glow Frogs again, killing three of them in the process. But one was left standing.

Pinball didn't want to let this one get away. So he wouldn't.

  • 3 weeks later...

With one final, fatal thrust of his spear, the final remaining Glow Frog exploded in a cloud of digital shards. Pinball took a step back, letting the butt of his spear touch the cool cave ground. The illuminescent crystals that seemed to light up the chamber almost felt like they were dimming now. Or was that just his imagination? But it was over now, and for some reason his internal musings had sucked the fight right out of him. Pinball wasn't in the mood to figure out why that was. He was done, now. Pinball lifted his staff and let the weapon rest across his shoulders as he turned, ignoring the rewards screen that blazed to life in front of him. He didn't care right now. He just wanted to go home, wherever that may be at this point, and sleep.

Yeah, sleep would be nice. Just a nice long nap, but only for a couple of hours at most. He had to keep moving... always moving.

And no more grinding. Jesus Christ, he was sick of it.
