[PP-F1] The First Steps

Recommended Posts

This was it. Today was the day the Sairies would step outside the safe zone. She was given her knife a few days ago, and it was then that she decided that this was what she wanted to do. She wouldn't just sit in the town of beginnings and wait for this game to get cleared for her, she'd at least try to have fun and enjoy the game while she could. She just needed to be careful. That, and Sairies wanted to feel free again. She wanted to run around in open fields once more and not hole herself up in a tavern praying that she didn't get PK'd. She was going to do this.

Steeling her resolve, Sairies walked to the front gate and stood there for a moment. Dagger in hand.  She took a deep breath, and then looked forwards. It was a nice cobble road with fields surronding either side. Sairies couldn't even see any mobs. But trying she was a nervous wreck trying to cross that barrier. So she stood there. Staring out into the open field waiting for her, but refusing to move. She just couldn't bring herself to take a step further. What if she was PK'd? Surely there was just blood crazed indiviuals waiting for weaklings like her to step out for their first time. Or what if the Mobs were harder than she remembered? Or maybe they'd gotten stronger due to others like her religiously clearing out the lower level fields to be safe. There were so many ifs, that Saries just froze.

Roulette rested the grip of his spear on his shoulder as he casually walked through the crowds of people. There weren't any quests available to him at the moment so he had decided he was going to do the next best thing; go stab a bunch of monsters. Though, he definitely knows he isn't going to be much of a damage dealing player, he knew he should at least take advantage of the lower leveled mobs that lurked the first floor. Plus, his build wasn't even based on his healing capabilities yet, so he should just focus on getting as much money and loot as he can for now.

It wasn't long before he had reached the front gate of the town. Boy, did he hate this hellhole. Who wanted to be piled up with a bunch of dimwits who were too much of a wimp to even get pass the front gates? He didn't wanted to be branded with those idiots. He was far from them, in fact. His plans for the not-so-distant future were inevitable.

He wasn't sure how long he was lost in though but he immediately snapped out of it when he bumped into someone. Ji-hu blinked momentarily before looking down to see another player. He looked her up and down and kept a passive face on. She didn't look like anything special, though he did note that the white hair was a weird thing, but he brushed that thought aside. The girl didn't have much on her, so  he quickly noted that she was probably just another low-level that inhabited the town.

Seeing that he had no use for her, his face morphed into a scowl. "Watch where you're standing," he spat, already walking away. "Some of us people have places to be."

Sairies was locked into her headspace when suddenly from behind she was ran into. The girl stumbled a few steps forwards, and the words she'd been dreading appeared on her hud.

You are now leaving the safe zone

Sairies froze. It felt like her heart stopped. Thankfully her skin was already fairly pale so it'd hide most of the sheer terror she was expressing, but not quite all of it. She could feel her stomach in her throat. She wasn't sure if she could vomit in a VRMMO, but she figured she was about to find out. However, once more she was snapped out of it. A man who looked like he was in starter gear with the starter weapon too spoke venom at her. "Watch where you're standing," he said. She could almost feel the venom on his words, and subconciously checked her health bar to make sure it didn't come with a status effect before he continued, already walking off. "Some of us people have places to be."

Sairies felt herself flair up. she was working up to stepping outside damn it. And who was he anyways? He didn't look much better off gear wise than she was. He certainly didn't seem as scared of the mobs as she was, but he still couldn't be much better. Before she knew what she was doing, Sairies felt herself moving forwards. The air filled with hum of her Violet dagger  as she switched to reverse grip and oozing a pink light began to emanate from the dagger. In a flash of movement she'd push in front of him, spinning and stopping her dagger mere iches from his throat. Though she was having to hold it considerably up due to their height difference. Her piercing red eyes glaring holes into him. "Watch where you're walking. Some of us have scenes to admire." So that definitely didn't come out as threatening as she would have liked, and as she turned around and sheathed her blade she was glad her skin was as white it was, because ever single step forwards into the fields beyond the Town of Beginnings felt like it might hold death for her. But her pride carried her forwards. Well past the fields that surronded the town and into the nearby forest, where she knew she'd find mobs.

His eyes darkened as he narrowed his eyes at her. "I don't think you have the power to tell me what to do, kid," he hissed, not even flinching at the dagger that was held so close to his chin. "And you're certainly admiring something oh-so-beautiful," he scoffed, tilting his head towards the town that was bustling like bees in a beehive. "Truly and utterly scenic, my good lady," he muttered sarcastically as he watched her walk away into the distance. Ji-hu rolled his eyes and gripped the shaft of his spear tighter. What was a brat like her telling him what to do? Roulette groaned, and ran a hand through his auburn hair.

Women.

He shooed the though away and started walking towards one of the nearest mob hunting grounds, which just so happened to be where the little lady was heading. He clicked distastefully and trailed behind her, keeping at least a few meters separating them. His dark eyes burned through her head, or at least he had wished they did. Something was off about this girl, and he didn't even want to bother finding out. Curiosity was never his strong suit, but he would much rather have his head on than to know a few close-kept secrets.

The padding of feet behind Sairies let her know that someone, most likely him was behind her. Whether he was following her or just heading to the hunting ground she couldn't be certain, but it mad her quicken her steps just that little bit much more as her heart beat raced him. She knew the chances of him being a PKer were slim. Even if he was an asshole, his cursor was green which mean at least for now he was an upstanding player. He also didn't look much stronger than her, and assuming Sairies played it right she might be able to outmatch him or at least make it back to the safe zone where his then orange marker wouldn't allow him to go.

Still, his steps were relentless, and as they got just a little ways into the forest, Sairies turned around to confront the man. "Are you just going to keep following me? isn't there ano-" her words were cut off by the glowing red eyes behind the man, and the red cursor behind him. Her eyes widened and she felt her heart sink and her chest tighten. That was it. That was a real wolf glaring down the two of them looking for a meal. That thing had the very real possibility of ending her life right here and now. She'd never get to see her mom again. She'd never get to read her favorite book again. She'd never find out-... her thoughts were snapped back to reality but the sound of growling behind her...

There was a second one?!? Sairies turned around and slowly started backing away from the growling creature slowly moving towards her. There was nothing between her and that monster right now. Nothing between her and something that wanted her very much dead, and had the power to do it. Sairies kept backing up until she hit something solid. Without looking she couldn't tell whether it was the man or a tree she'd ran into, but her eyes couldn't peel away from the beast in front of her slowly moving forwards. Sairies swallowed the lump in her throat. "So... what do you say we call a truce for now? I'm not sure I can handle both of these myself." she said. Her voice a bit shaky. With that she swiped her hand down and quickly sent him a party invite. XP and Col on Shared. If he did agree, she definitely didn't want all of the XP and Loot going to him.

Roulette rolled his eyes as he watched her visibly grow faster. Did this woman really think that he was going to kill her? He wouldn't waste such time doing that, especially if he didn't benefit from it. What was the point of killing her anyway? It's not like she would have anything good on her.

His half lidded eyes watched her spin around and face him. He groaned and rubbed his temples. "Look, lady. As much as I know you want a frekin' stalker, I'm not your man," he said in a bored tone. When her eyes nearly fell out of sockets, he quickly realized that there were mobs around them. What a drag. They shouldn't be too hard, right? Of course, they weren't! He had done research for this for weeks. He may be a risk taker but he isn't frekin' stupid. His eyes narrowed as he used his free hand to point something behind her. "Hey, I think there's something-"

He was cut off when he realized she had already seen it and was slowly backing away from it. He let out a small 'umph' as she backed straight into him. "Watch it," he muttered, gripping his spear tighter as he looked back and forth between the two wolves. "Truce?" He questioned, raising one of his eyebrows. "Whatever you say, kid. Just don't bite my head off before one of these things, yeah?" He looked at her one more time before starting up a sword art. As much as he would want to argue with the girl some more, he was in full concentration mode right now. He nodded his head over to the first wolf. "Start with that one."

As soon as he ended his sentence, the boy dashed off, spear in both hands. He brought the spear up and slashed it down the wolf's torso, earning a loud howl from it. A red gash was left in place and the brunette smirked when he watched it's HP go down considerably. He backed away before the wolf had the chance to lunge at him and looked at the white haired girl beside him. "Well? Get on with it."

"Whatever you say, kid. Just don't bite my head off before one of these things, yeah?" Well at least he agreed to that. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all, just a bit irritated. Had she jumped the gun a bit? No, even if he had been in a bad mood running into her and then scowling at her for him not paying attention wasn't good manners in the slightest. Even her sheltered upbringing would tell her that. But, at least he'd be patient and work with her for now.

"Start with that one." he said, nodding to the one in front of him. He gripped his spear in charged straight in slashing down on the wolf and carving a considerable amount of it's health bar. 'Wait he has beginner equipment right?' Sairies watched as the health bar of the wolf tanked. He did so much damage to it! they could definitely get this done easily. "Well? Get on with it." he shouted next to her, but she was already moving forwards. Some of her instincts kicked in. The creatures health bar looked low enough that she could probably just swipe at it with her dagger so at least theoretically she could skip on the sword art for now.  "On it!" she shouted as she moved passed him, dagger in reverse grip ready to strike.

She readied her blade and slashed, however the wolf didn't shatter nor did she even graze him as it lept deftly to the side of her lunge. It then made it's own lunge at Roulette, not managing to find purchase. It was however enough of a distraction that the second wolf managed to get in an attack. Sairies cringed as she watched his health bar drop. He hadn't accepted her party request, but she still felt bad. If she'd made that attack there, he might not have taken damage. As she spun around to face the monsters, sliding to halt she shouted out "Sorry! he got away from me" as she then began to charge back in.

Ji-hu never took his eyes off of Sairies as she lunged after the wolf. Though she was low level, she certainly looked like she knew how to fight. The brunette internally groaned as she missed the wolf. That moment didn't last too long, however, as he was suddenly knocked back by a powerful force. God damn, it still knocked the breath out of him even if it didn't hurt. The player grit his teeth as he was launched at the trunk of a close by tree. Roulette narrowed his eyes at the red-eyed mob as he glanced at his draining health bar. It dealt a fraction of his health and he wasn't too worried about it for now, but it was going to become troublesome if they don't kill the wolves soon.

He readied himself once again and lunged at the first wolf. His eyes widened by a fraction as his blade narrowly missed the wolf by a hair. Damn, guess the glory of his first attack didn't last too lock, did it? His expression morphed into a scowl as he retreated back to the other player. The fight was reassured, he knew that, but it still troubled him that they could've killed the first wolf already. He turned his head towards Sairies and huffed, "Try to kill this one, this time," he said crossly, finally accepting the party request with a tap of the finger.

Seeing the brown haired man get slammed into a tree by the attack of the wolf really didn't help much with her desire to not really be out here. But she was here and she was committed. The man then lunged himself at the same wolf that was already injured, the one they'd been trying to kill up until this point, but the wolf lept backwards narrowly avoiding his attack. He then also jumped back next to Sairies shouting at her "Try to kill this one, this time," as he accepted her party invite.

Sairies looked up into the top left corner of her HUD. So his username is Roulette huh? She'd make a mental note of that but for now she needed to focus on the task in front of her. The girl charged forwards, The 1st wolf still targetting Roulette, she aimed to drive her dagger into it's head. However as she started her plunge forwards, she noticed the other wolf in closing in on her her from the side. She spun underneath it as it lept over her completely whiffing her, but it caused her to move just enough that she just caught the hairs on the other wolf running past her which slammed into Roulette. A soft "damn it..." escaped Sairies lips as she began to move back towards Roulette and the wolf. With how low it's health bar was they definitely should have finished it off by now, but after the first hit it they just couldn't seem to find any sort of purchase on it. It was frustrating, especially because they still had another to deal with.

Roulette let out a inaudible gasp as he was once again knocked back by a wolf. "God damn it," he muttered, using his spear to help himself up. He scrambled back to his feet and tried attacking the first wolf again. His face broke out into a deadpan when he missed, again. He doubled back and scowled. How could he have missed twice in a row? He had enhancements for this! Why the hell weren't they doing their job?!

Stupid game.

Her muttered more profanities under his breath as he gazed a deadly glare at the one-hit-away wolf. He wasn't one to get angered so easily but God damn, this whole battle was messing with his head. Numbers and stats weren't playing their respective roles right now. He retreated back a few more steps and pushed up his glasses instinctively. He knew they were useless in a game like this where it solved all of sensory, hearing, and sight problems, but he had to keep them or he would look like an idiot pushing up his invisible glasses in public.

Roulette quickly maneuvered to his feet, recovering from his attack.  She was glad he wasn't at least wasn't complaining about her not being able to hit the creature in the slightest. Though, he didn't have much room to complain Sairies noted as he charged his spear in and the wolf nimbly evaded that strike as well.

'Holy [censored]' Sairies thought to herself. "did we encounter a field boss or something? this wolf is way too skilled for us at this level' Sairies was sure that they would have had it fairly quickly after the initial burst that Roulette had dealt to it, but apparently not.  Sairies nimbly evaded the other wolf whom they hadn't even got to yet and then went in for another attack on their priority target.

The wolf ducked underneath her blade as it bite down on Roulette yet another time. She just couldn't hit it for one reason or another. She winced again as she watched his Hp bar fall just that little bit further. It wasn't in the yellow yet so there wasn't much need to worry, but still it made her feel bad to know that someone's actual life total was falling because she couldn't hit a damn mob. If it got any worse she'd offer to switch with him as the other wolf hadn't been able to touch her health bar yet.

"Stupid overgrown mutts," he muttered hotly as one of the wolves bit down on him. He kicked it back with a harsh push of his foot and scowled. "I'm finishing this damn thing," Roulette growled as he charged forward yet again to stab the creature. As he heard the sound of flesh tearing and a pained cry, he let out a sigh of relief. As the wolf exploded into dozens of red shard, he chuckled soundlessly.

All the items had already been transferred to his inventory so he walked back cautiously to the 'comforts' of his party mate. "That one has been taken care of. We just need to take care of," he paused, taking a moment to shoot daggers at the other wolf, "that one." He internally groaned at the thought of doing this all over again but refused to let it bother him any more. "Let's just kill the damn thing and get it over with."

"I'm finishing this damn thing," Roulette Shouted as he charged the wolf that had bit him. Sairies eye widened as he drove the spear into the wolf's pelt. The creature let out a gratifying howl and then burst into tiny shards. Sairies was so excited she almost jumped for joy, but then she remembered that they had another problem to deal with.

Just as that thought crossed her mind, she heard the padding of feet behind her. She dodged out of the way just as the wolf lunged past her. '[censored] that one was close' She thought to herself. However now that the other one was dealt with there was something she wanted to try. As Roulette stood next to her and grumbled about getting rid of the next one, Sairies nodded to herself and said aloud "Right. Cover me for a second while I replenish my energy a bit..." She said as she leapt backwards a bit and knelt in a crouching position. Her blade reverse grip behind her, she leveled her eyes at the wolf and waited...

"Cover for you?" He questioned, but she had already bounded behind him. The player sighed to himself and fixed his gaze back on the second wolf. He hoped that this wouldn't take too long, and boy was he wrong. It didn't matter though, he just wanted it dead by now. His facade was quickly slipping from his fingers and the only way for it to come back was to kill this damned wolf. Seeing that Sairies wasn't going to attack anytime soon, he charged back at the wolf, running his spear down its fur and leaving a large red, pixelated gash on its abdomen. Roulette let out a triumphic huff as he watched it's HP drop bar by bar. The player quickly retreated back and tilted his head at the other player. "You should be able to kill it if you land your sword art. I got it down to half for you."

Sairies watched patiently as her energy bar ticked up one. She grinned as her dagger began to glow a bright purple, humming with the distinct sound that said she was about to use a sword art. she let it charge up for a second as she began to run towards it. She then let the sword art release when she felt it was ready. However she could tell immediately that she let it go too early, and her result proved that.

Sairies blade ended in front of the wolf. She didn't even get to take her second strike as the combo was stopped at the first strike. Anger flared in her. Was she really this nervous? She hadn't been able to hit a single wolf yet, and it was frustrating. Sairies let a disgruntled "[censored] hell are you serious?" as she missed. She wasn't sure if this was just because this was now real and so she wasn't sure of herself or if she was scared of dying, and that made her nervous enough to miss every strike. But, whatever her issue was she needed to resolve it soon.

The wolf then moved it's way past her and went directly for the person who has damaged it most recently. The most Sairies could do was spin herself around, sliding to a halt. As she watched the wolf lunge towards Roulette. Thankfully it missed. Sairies began preparing for another attack assuming that Roulette won't kill it this round. Even if he did manage to kill the creature Sairies being prepped for the worst couldn't be a bad thing.

Roulette nearly stumbled down to his bottom when the wolf charged back at him again. He let out a silent yelp and narrowly avoided its baring teeth and claws. Jesus, how many times could this woman miss? He'd been doing the majority of the damage, if not all of it! He gave a silent glare to Sairies before charging back into battle with his spear. The glassed nearly slid off of his face as the wolf dodged his attack, missing by a hair. His face broke out into a signature scowl as he backed away from the wolf again.

"We've exchanged multiple attacks with this mutated mutt and we still haven't killed it yet?" He scoffed to himself as he lowered his spear. Honestly, it seriously wasn't even that hard. They could've been finished by now if she landed two of her attacks. The brunette didn't bother expressing this to the other player. She seemed like the type to go off on his ass if he made one single negative comment about her, anyway.

"We've exchanged multiple attacks with this mutated mutt and we still haven't killed it yet?" Roulette scuffed as the wolf managed to dodge yet another attack. She'd agree. This was some BS if she'd ever seen it. But still. They had to kill it. She had to kill it if she ever wanted to get away from this guy. Though knowing that he was struggling just as much as she was put her might a little bit more at ease around him. Please he seemed to ease off being the biggest A-hole at least while they fought, which Sairies had been grateful for.

Still, she grew tired of not being able to take care of mobs on the first floor? How was she ever going to progress if she couldn't even kill the basic mods.  Sairies eyes narrowed at the wolf as she got down into an aggressive stance. She let out a sigh as she let the anger in her broil. It shouldn't have taken this long. She have finished off these wolves by now and moved on. Sairies face tightened in anger as her eyes narrowed. Sairies shot past Roulette and 'lunged' at the wolf. Her movements hadn't been aimed by the system, it was more of an arm movement as far as the system was concerned then an actual attack. Still, the wolf launched to the side and then lept straight towards her aiming to bite. The corners of Sairies mouth turned upwards in a bit of a sadistic grin. She foot turned sideways slowing her momentum by quite a bit. She then put her left foot forwards, spinning as the wolf lept towards her. Quickly flipping the dagger in her hand, she brought the dagger down at an angle as she spun. Slamming her dagger into the base of the wolf's skull, effectively blocking the attack and securing the hit in one move.

The wolf let out a howl of pain as it's health bar dropped dangerously low.

Roulette sighed in relief as the wolf's HP bar dropped to practically nothing. At last, the girl had done something! As soon as she had finished her attack, he rushed passed her, both hands on his spear with an iron grip. It didn't take much of an effort for him to finally kill the damned creature. Thank the Gods for that. The wolf howled one last time before bursting into a cloud of red pixels. The player huffed as he slowly stood up and gave a once over of where the wolf once was a few seconds ago. "About damn time," he mumbled, walking over to where Sairies was. His eyes grazed over the name in the corner of his vision and quirked and eyebrow. "Sairies, huh? Interesting," he unequipped his spear and crossed his arms.

"I suppose we have to sort out who gets who, huh," he sighed and opened up his menu. A few quick taps later, he was in his inventory. "I'm not in the mood to fight with anyone today," he said boredly as he glanced at the other player from the corner of his eye, "so I suppose I'll let you have the more... rarer item here," Roulette sighed as looked up at her for confirmation. "Of course, the Col will be distributed evenly, as well."

Sairies didn't even get but a moment after she finally managed to plunge her dagger into the wolf before she felt the resistance basically vanish as she watched a spear pierce through it on the other side and the wolf howled before bursting into shards and vanishing.  That was it. They were done. If felt like they had been fighting for both way too long, but like it all happened in an instance. Should really couldn't imagine it was more than just a few seconds or a minute or so at most, and still it was all over.

Sairies arms shot up, dagger still held in reverse grip as she shouted "We did it!" as excited filled her to the brim. There was a clear smile on her face and nothing but joy.  She was alive! They were alive! they had killed monsters and not died in the process! the thought was exhilarating given the kind of mental state and pure fear that she'd been feeling over the past few months.  That was until she remembered who her companion was, as she spotted Roulette walking over towards her.  Her arms and face dropped a bit. 'Riiiggghhtttt... him' Sairies let out a sigh as he approached.

"I suppose we have to sort out who gets who, huh," he said rather dejectedly as she opened up his menus "Who gets whaa-" she stopped herself short. 'oh right! Items! drops!' Sairies had totally forgotten about those kinds of things and was honestly just most thrilled to be alive. I'm not in the mood to fight with anyone today, so I suppose I'll let you have the more... rarer item here," He said eyeing her out of the corner of her eye. Sairies sheathed her dagger as she began her natural response "oh no... you really don't-.." She cut herself off again and looked at the trade menu. She knew she hadn't really helped. But honestly, he was extending an olive branch to her. Rejecting that might look poor, and she wasn't really in the mood to argue anymore either. "Actually, I'll take it" Sairies said hitting accept on the trade offer before he could change his mind "Thank you Roulette... for offering that I mean. I understand I didn't really help out much in the fight. So that was kind." She said as she dropped her hand down to open up the menu and then navigated to the party options, leaving the party. She then walked over to Roulette and offered her hand to shake. "I'm not gonna say it was nice to meet you... you were kind of an asshole through most of it. But I'm fairly confident I would have died without you here, and you didn't even complain that much about me when we were fighting... at least not audibly. So thank you for saving me." She said with her hand extended offering to shake. If he said anything else, she'd stay and listen, and/or if he didn't take her hand she'd drop it. Either way after it was all over, She'd turn around and start to head back towards The Town of Beginnings. Stopping briefly to say back over her shoulder "Seriously. Thanks for this." Then she'd wander off.

In a weird way, she hoped she see him again. Maybe at least that time he'd lighten up a little bit. A small part of her thought that if he'd chill out a little bit they could maybe even be friends. Maybe. At some point. Waaayyyyy later.

"It's not a problem," he said, shrugging off her whole speech. He was pretty pooped out and he felt like if he made a sarcastic remark of any kind, this whole thing would blow up again. He sighed as she offered out her hand to him but took it grudgingly anyway. He shook it once before retracting his hand and stuffing it into his pocket. It wasn't like it was certainly a joy ride with her, either, but he didn't comment on it. "No problem," he said one last time, offering a small but stoic wave to her as she walked away. Once she was finally gone, he let out a small sigh. He was never a talkative one, thank the Gods for that, but he couldn't help but be amused when he stumbles upon someone with as much ferocity as her. It was quite interesting, to say the least. He was certainly going to have to fix his behavior in this world since-- judging by her actions-- the way he was acting now simply wasn't going to do. After all, this was a place where friendships could lead you straight to the top.

Sairies.

The sides of his lips tugged upward into a smirk as he started walking away from the hunting spot. I'll remember that.
