Bahr materialized in Vulcan Village at the teleport, his boots thumping against the ground as he stepped off from the platform. There had been rumors circulating about a powerful Cerberus-inspired mob that spawned in a cave on this floor, where temperatures were so hot the unaware traveler's HP would deplete simply for stepping inside. The implications of the quest were exciting to Bahr; he would be forced to go all out and defeat the foe before he died from a combination of heat exhaustion and the damage he took from the fight. It was a dangerous mission, but that's what made it all the more tantalizing.

Word on the street was it was a two day journey to the cave with no shortcuts, not that that bothered Bahr. Sure, the floor was a lava-infested mess and it would surely take a physical toll on Bahr for being exposed to it for so long, but that was just another aspect of the quest he found appealing. It would be rigorous, grueling, and test his mettle every step of the way. Being his first time on the ninth floor, he wouldn't have it any other way. In the spirit of this sentiment, he wasted no time leaving town and setting off due south toward the supposed location of the cave.

While traversing through the hellscape that was the ninth floor, Bahr couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the heat. It was easily the hottest place he had visited so far, arguably hotter than even the fifth floor. As he walked along, he practiced some mental techniques to convince himself that he actually liked the heat, contrary to his usual disdain for all things hot. He had practiced the same technique several time growing up, only with the cold, as the midwest United States tended to be ruthlessly chilly for the majority of the year. Where he lived in particular, it would often get colder than Siberia.

Reaching the end of the first day, Bahr was absolutely exhausted. He found a depression in a nearby crag to hide in, hoping that it would shield him from any would-be attackers that lurked the area during the night. Before long, he could feel himself slipping away due to his exhaustion.

When he awoke the next morning, he felt stiff all over. Certainly a rocky crag in the middle of Aincrad's hell wasn't actually a good place to get a full night's rest. That was probably why he had only gotten five hours or so of sleep, waking at four in the morning and being unable to get back to sleep. With a resigned sigh, he stood and exited the depression, starting to walk south once more.

It was honestly astonishing how large the floor was, and how difficult it was to maneuver. Countless times he found himself at the edge of a steep cliff, and was forced to walk around in order to proceed. Were the terrain not so treacherous, it would only be a one day trip, easily. Bahr knew that it was because he had been spoiled by the lower floors that he was thinking this way, and reminded himself of what he had come for. He didn't expect this to be easy, and he hadn't wanted it to be. This was supposed to be a test of his endurance and skill.

Bahr knew he had gotten closer, but it didn't exactly feel like it. The treacherous terrain sometimes felt like it was leading him in circles, what with everything looking the same no matter what direction he looked. It was maddening, to a certain degree. He eyed the in-game clock, noticing that it was already 10PM. If he wanted to be well rested for the battle the following day, he needed to find another place to rest. But where?

There was no such depression in a rocky wall that he could take advantage of this time. It seemed that he would need to find the most remote place possible and be okay with leaving himself exposed. He found the best spot he could, which was nothing more than a corner of sorts, and sat down with his back against it. After some time, he was able to slip away into unconsciousness once more.

When he woke up again, it was to the sound of screeching. Apparently a Large Eagle that had been circling overhead hadn't taken a liking to Bahr's intrusion on its territory, and was screeching whilst in the middle of a swooping-style attack. As soon as Bahr's eyes were open, he scrambled to roll to his side, narrowly avoiding the attack. Unsheathing his blade and charging it up all in one smooth motion, he struck the bird countless times before it squawked and flew off.

Finally having a chance to get to his feet, Bahr clumsily stood up and checked the time. It was three in the goddamn morning. The stupid bird had violated his shuteye, but he supposed he hadn't missed out on much sleep in comparison to the night before. Hot beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, caught by his brow and eventually permeating through to sting his eyes. He knew the fight wasn't over; the eagle would be circling back for another pass any minute.

By the time Bahr had determined the direction the oversized bird was coming from, it was too late. It swooped in at high speeds and, with surgical precision, raked its razor sharp talons against his back, causing him to gasp and arch his back while lurching forward. By pure instinct alone, he managed to charge his blade and turn around in time to deliver various vicious strikes, clocking the mob no less than seven times before it squawked and flew off once again. He had taken a pretty good hit, but he still had plenty of gas left in the tank.

He wasn't entirely sure, but he was fairly certain he had seen the creature's health dip below a quarter of what it had been originally. One more well-placed attack and he could kiss the mob goodbye. Whether or not the loot on this floor was any good remained to be seen, but Bahr saw this as an opportunity to find out. Hell, maybe he could even get out of here with a nice eagle dinner.

The thing about this bird was that it clearly wasn't smart. It used the same attack patterns over and over again, always aiming for the back if it was able. And every time it swooped in, it let out this godawful screech that let Bahr know it was coming and roughly how far away it was. When it did just that, Bahr charged his blade and used one of his older Sword Arts, Back Rush. He twirled on the ball of his foot and lashed out with his sword, striking the bird clean between the eyes as the Bleed damage eradicated whatever trace amounts of HP remained. It blew up into a cloud of blue pixels, and a loot panel populated in front of Bahr.

Turned out the loot here wasn't terrible. The trinket was dismissible, but extra col never hurt anybody. Satisfied with the result of the battle, Bahr sheathed his weapon and started heading south once more. He was tired from the lack of sleep, overheated from the environment, and exhausted from the battle, but he knew he had to press on.

As Bahr moseyed along, he started to notice things. Things that fluttered about at the edge of his peripheries. Things that teased at his every sense in a way that seemed like a mockery of true stimuli. Things he knew couldn't actually be there. Dark shadows that darted behind corners the moment his eyes flickered to meet with them, warpings in the rocky structures that waited behind every turn, distant cackles distorted freely between octaves. He knew that these were merely delusions of his overworked body and sleep-starved mind. That being said, it didn't stop them from startling him on occasion.

He wanted to pick up the pace so he could complete his quest sooner, but he didn't feel like he had the stamina to do so. Keeping steady at the pace he was going was already challenge enough. He knew that if he overexerted himself, he wouldn't have any gas left in the tank when it came time to fight the boss.

Still, these visions were nagging at him. Every sense felt dulled while simultaneously lit up. He would smell something absolutely foul, and it would fade instantly. He would see some menacing figure lurking ahead, only to find that it wasn't there when he rounded the corner. He would feel something breathing down his neck, but there was nothing there. He would hear a wicked mishmash of overlapping voices and maniacal laughs. He even tasted some things, however briefly, that he would rather not describe.

All of this from some simple sleep deprivation and heat exhaustion? Bahr could hardly believe it. And according to what he had heard, the inside of the cave was even more sinister still, the temperatures rising to levels that threatened to sap away his health just for existing within it. If he had set out to test himself, he had succeeded. He only hoped that he could manage to actually defeat the monster he set out to fight when the moment arose.

Finally, and against all odds, Bahr had located the cave. He stood at the maw of the intimidating corridor, feeling the heat radiating from within. It filled him with a sense of dread and foreboding that was difficult to describe. The visions and voices he were experiencing layered onto the unease, bringing Bahr to the brink of hysteria. He gulped the feelings back down his hot throat, mouth dry and tacky from the hell he had put himself through over the past couple days.

A cursory glance at his stats indicated that he had a little bit longer to wait until everything was fully replenished, unless that was just his senses playing tricks on him again. He sat down beside the entrance to the cave and waited, keeping an eye on his stats and waiting for them to full restore before rushing in. It was a strange experience, as though he was waiting to face his very death. Once everything looked good and his stats were fully restored, he sighed and stood, heading into the cave to get this quest over with.

As soon as he entered the cave, he was blasted with the hottest air he had ever experienced in his life. Imagine a gigantic hair drier shooting hot air into your face outside in the middle of a hot July day in Texas, and then add another ten degrees. He put his arm over his face to mask it from the horrendous heat, braving the elements as he marched into the cave.

It didn't take him long to encounter some mobs. Hell Hounds, the minions of Cerberus. He knew he had to defeat them before he got the chance to fight the big bad. He unsheathed his oversized sword and held it out with one hand, the other arm still occupied covering his face. The first one lunged and Bahr sidestepped it as he charged up his blade, swinging flippantly at the other two with an AoE move. To his surprise, they both exploded into pixels upon impact.

Now that he knew how glassy these mobs were, Bahr didn't feel at all threatened. Sure, they probably packed a punch if they could hit him, but if he could dispatch them so easily, then he didn't have much to worry about. With his EVA so high, the chances of the last one actually hitting him was slim at best, and if he got to it first, it wouldn't matter anyways.

He charged up his blade and began to spin on his heel as the last Hell Hound approached, slicing into its face four times in a row and causing it to combust into a cloud of blue triangular pixels. Knowing that the real fight was yet to come, Bahr kept his weapon out and stepped forward cautiously. His eyes flickered to his health bar, and he noticed that he had already taken a bit of heat damage from being in the cave. He needed to find his target and finish this quickly.

As he walked further, he heard a deep voice bellow through the cave, its decibel level high enough to shake the floor and rattle the loose rocks against it.

"LEAVE NOW, MORTAL! THE LIKES OF YOU ARE FORBIDDEN IN THIS LAND. YOU, WHO ARE POWERLESS, ARE NOT WORTHY TO STEP FOOT HERE."

The three-headed dog descended from the ceiling, the crash from it hitting the floor causing the entire cave to tremble.

"Wow! I've never seen a talking mutt before. You know, in a dog show, you'd definitely take first place."

"YOU, A MERE HUMAN, MAKE A MOCKERY OF ME?"

"Easy, Fido! How about I take you out for a walk? C'mon puppy, let's go!" Bahr taunted as he gestured for the overgrown mutt to follow him, clapping his hands together to get its attention as he would a small puppy.

"YOU'LL REGRET THIS, YOU WORM!"

Already bored with the theatrics, Bahr leapt into the air with his sword charged, unleashing Tempest and striking all three heads. Both heads to either side of the center exploded into pixels immediately, the third and center taking enough damage to destroy it. For some reason, it hadn't blown up yet. Cerberus fell lifelessly to the floor, groaning in agony. Bahr fell back to the floor on his feet and sheathed his weapon, approaching the final remaining head as it began to speak.

"You are not human, are you?"

"Who knows? I'm not even sure myself."

"Regardless, you have proven your strength. I acknowledge your ability. Take my soul and go forth. You have my blessing."

With that, the final head and the rest of the body exploded into a million blue pixels, and a loot panel populated in front of Bahr. He had acquired the Cerberus Soul.

"Too easy!"

As soon as Bahr exited the cave, he was greeted by a rampaging goat headed straight for him. He narrowly managed to escape its path, the goat's momentum carrying it toward the rocky wall. It's horns clanked loudly against the hard surface, prompting an <Immortal Object> message to appear above it.

"Wow! I just got out of the cave! You'd think I'd have a clear shot back home, but I guess that's just too much to ask for."

The goat had already turned to face Bahr, stamping its hoof loudly against the ground and dragging it back. It was working itself up for another attack. Anticipating the charge, Bahr charged his blade and waited for the creature to approach. It launched forward, and when it was within striking distance, Bahr viciously thwacked it away with his blade, landing a nice crit and inflicting some Bleed damage, causing the goat to yell out in pain.

The goat was none too happy about its embarrassing performance so far, bleating angrily toward Bahr as it prepped itself for another attack.

"I don't think that's going to end well for you. You saw what happened the last time. Or felt, rather," Bahr mused, cokcing his head to the side as he observed the strange animal. Without a second thought, it charged forward, seemingly with no care for its own well being. Bahr rolled his eyes and charged his sword again, unleashed a rapid flurry of strikes that sent the creature veering wildly off course. It shrieked as it made impact with the wall, the damage that Bahr had inflicted and the Bleed damage already starting to take their toll. "I told you. Didn't I tell you?" Bahr taunted.

The goat did not reply, because it was a goat. It slowly turned around, lowering its head and seemingly getting ready for another strike.

Bahr sighed as the creature charged forth once more, charging his blade and readying himself for the attack. He unleashed yet another flurry of strikes, this time dealing enough damage to put the poor thing out of its misery. A loot panel populated in front of Bahr shortly after, awarding him with more col, another rare trinket, and a couple of T1 Materials for his troubles. At the very least, it looked as though Bahr wouldn't be leaving empty handed.

As he began to walk north, the fatigue that had gripped him before the adrenaline of battle shook him awake began to set in yet again. It was a long trip back to town. He fantasized about spending time in the snow, reveling in the comfort it brought as its soothing cold seeped into his every pore. He felt pretty picky these days, not liking the cold when he was subjected to it but also disliking the heat when he found himself in such an environment.

He wandered along sluggishly for quite some time before finding a tiny cave of sorts. It wasn't very large, really only big enough to fit himself inside if he ducked. So he climbed on in, curling into a ball and falling asleep instantly, completely exhausted from the day's exploits. His sleep wasn't peaceful, his feverish temperature and horrid dreams causing him to toss and turn uncomfortably through the night. When he awoke at 6AM, he could hardly believe he had slept that long. It felt like he hadn't gotten any shut eye at all.

With a groan, he picked himself up and continued onward, due north, trying to mentally prepare himself for yet another day of grueling marching through the hellscape wasteland that was the ninth floor. Why had he done this, again? Oh, right, he wanted to prove he could. 'Test his mettle.' What a laugh. The hardest part of the entire quest was the journey. He had slain Cerberus with a single attack! To think that he had struggled harder against foes on lower floors.

There came a point when enough was enough. Bahr no longer had the patience to endure the heat. Whilst still walking, he opened up his menu and navigated to his equipment panel. From there, he swapped out his trousers for more accommodating vanity pants that were more airable, and his thick vanity gloves for the Gloves of Caerus. The Gloves were a mystical feat of tailoring excellency, offering the wearer good luck through thick and thin. He knew it was risky to take off his combat gear on a level like this, but he simply couldn't take it anymore. The change in clothing allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief, and he stepped forward with a bit more pep in his step now that he was more comfortable.

It was still a long trek back, and the heat was still miserable, but Bahr had caught a second wind. He had endured it so far, right? All he needed to do was endure it for another day or so. Easy.

After what seemed like eons, night descended upon the landscape once more. As luck would have it, the very same rocky depression that Bahr had used just a couple of nights ago was right around where he decided to stop for the evening. He climbed into the depression and conked out within seconds, his exhaustion from days of grueling heat having definitely taken their toll.

This time around, he found that he slept easier. Perhaps it was due to the new clothing he had put on, allowing his body to vent heat much easier and not trap it to such a ridiculous degree. He dreamed of many wondrous things. Flying, fishing, filleting meat, freezing, fixing clothing, and other verbs that start with the letter "F" that I'm not allowed to write here. When he woke up the following morning, he felt extraordinarily refreshed, ready to tackle the world and all of its quandaries.

At long last, he could see the city on the horizon. The moment he laid eyes on it, he broke out into a full on sprint, not caring about his overheating or dehydration any longer. He could see it. He was almost there. No need to hold back any longer. He ran and ran, and finally, he was at the city's gates.

He sprinted through the streets and made his way to the teleport gate, screaming, "Teleport, Snowfrost!" the moment he was within earshot. The teleport gate obliged, teleporting him back down the fourth floor where the air was crisp and cool. He against sprinted from the teleport gate, running out of town and throwing himself into the nearest snowbank he could find.

He sank into the snow with a satisfying sizzle, steam billowing from his body into the air above. He laid face down in the snow for at least ten minutes, reveling in the absence of heat, and rekindling his love for the cold.
"Never again," he muttered.
