(I will be taking the Honest Route for this quest.)

Bahr marveled through his window at the garden of multicolored mushrooms that had started populating in his garden. Living on Floor Ten was seen as a strange choice by many, seeing as it was regarded as the Underworld of Aincrad. If it had a River Styx, that would be a difficult assertion to deny. But Bahr found a sort of quaintness to the environment. The glowing crystals and foliage made more an interesting terrain littered with interesting things to look at no matter which direction you turned.

But it seemed that he would never get the time he needed to simply sit down for an afternoon and enjoy it, as indicated by a message notification that populated in his peripheries. With a groan, he opened up his menu and navigated to the messages panel. To his surprise, it was none other than Ali, asking Bahr to meet him in a tavern on the Seventh Floor called the 'Drunken Crane.' With a sigh, Bahr readied his gear and set out for the Seventh Floor.

When he arrived at the tavern, it wasn't difficult to spot Ali.The first thing that Bahr noticed was that he wasn't accompanied by his brother, Cassim. How peculiar. He beckoned Bahr to join him for a drink, and within seconds there was a cold pint of virtual beer sitting in front of the Crimson Marauder. He hungrily scooped up the mug and downed half of it, the chilly liquid slithering down his throat and into his stomach, satisfying a myriad of senses.

"Have you heard?" Ali inquired in a hushed tone, checking around to make sure that nobody was paying attention to their conversation. He leaned in before continuing, "They say that those bandits have tamed a legendary being, some strange mixture of a lion with the wings of a dragon, and the tail or a scorpion. They captured it from the other side of Nimbus, high up the mountain. Can you check it out for me? Maybe slay it if you can and bring back some proof? You did a great job with those bandits I doubt you'll have a hard time with a little beast like that." He then let out a laugh, giving Bahr bad omen vibes.

Bahr chuckled as he leaned back in his seat, downing the remainder of his drink in a few large gulps. So this was the part where Ali tried to get rid of him. Bahr knew too much, so he needed to be removed from the equation. Little beast? Some sort of legendary creature? The notion was absurd. Surely, whatever bandits were involved in the quest would be mere cannon fodder, but the truly fearsome mobs of Aincrad were those belonging to the animal kingdom. From what Ali had described, this was going to be one of the trickier ones.

"Sure, I'll take care of your problems, again," Bahr chortled as he slammed his empty mug down against the table, accepting the quest window that had populated. "Looks like you'll be owing me again, huh? I'll be back with the head of that beast in no time." With that, he stood and exited the bar, ignoring Ali's awestruck expression.

It didn't take long for Bahr to navigate to the location indicated by the coordinates that had been issued to him by Ali. To his surprise, he had managed to make it all the way to the cave entrance without being assaulted by thieves. or so he thought. As soon as he approached the maw of the cave, three materialized seemingly out of thin air mere feet from him.

Bahr had been anticipating this, and his hand was already on the hilt of his sword. He drew it and charged it all in one smooth motion, slashing forward in a wide arc and striking all three of the thieves in one attack. To his surprise, they hadn't actually managed to slay any of them, and they were quick to counterattack with Sword Arts of their own. They each landed a decent blow on Bahr, enough to inflict a Bleed status effect, but the sharpness of their blades against his actual armor was nearly laughable.

The Bleed affliction was annoying, but it wasn't anything that was going to slow Bahr down. Judging by the rapid depletion of their health bars, all these idiots needed was one good hit and they would go down. In accordance with this, Bahr poured some energy into his blade once more, and it began to illuminate as the signature Sword Art whistle rang through the air. He brought it forward and into his enemies once more, two of them instantly going up in clouds of blue polygonal fractals. The third, seemingly slightly more elusive than the other two, managed to escape damage and come in for another pass at Bahr. This time, its strike was even more pathetic than the last, feeling like a mere tickle more than anything. It seemed that without its buddies to back it up, it couldn't so much as pierce through Bahr's skin and inflict a Bleed status.

"Wow. That was pathetic. Do you want to keep evading and prolong the inevitable, or accept your fate like a man?" Bahr inquired, pointing the tip of his blade toward the trembling NPC. It seemed like to was ready to carry on with the fight, but Bahr didn't give it the opportunity. He charged up his blade once more and stepped foward, unleashing a flurry of rapid strikes into thief's body, causing it to combust into a cloud of blue triangular pixels by the end of the ruthless assault.

With that out of the way, Bahr sheathed his blade against the small of his back and silently walked forward into the cave. No doubt, the creature that Ali had informed him about would be somewhere up ahead. Once he found it, he'd cut it down with a few strokes of his blade and be on his way back. With any luck, there would be a healthy serving of col as a reward for this task, just as there had been for the last.

As it turned out, the network of caves was quite a bit more expansive than Bahr had initially imagined. It was akin to a pseudo-labyrinth of sorts, its varying winding corridors branching off in a myriad of directions with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Bahr hated places like this, as his sense of direction was already bad enough as it was. In an effort to even the playing field a bit, he resorted to opening up a map panel and beginning to map out the immediate area so he could get a rough idea of how the network of caves was set up.

The further in he went, the more nervous he got. It seemed that they were burrowed so deep into the mountain that they could have led right out of the floating castle Aincrad itself. Just what had made caves like these, he wondered? Clearly not erosion. Though it was a little silly to wonder about such things, considering the world he inhabited was computer-generated. The more time he spent in Sword Art Online, the more often he had to remind himself of simple things like that.

But that was just it, wasn't it? It didn't really matter how real or fake this world was. He had spent over two years here, at this point it was about as real as real life itself. He ate, slept, and breathed this world twenty-four hours a day, every damn day. That's one of the many reasons he had decided to venture out and make the best of what this world had to offer. Idling around and waiting to return to the real world just wasn't going to cut it anymore. This was the nature of his true reality now.

Which was a bit depressing in itself, as well. To imagine that his reality, his life, could be relegated to some silly video game. What a bizarre realization to come to. Bahr, along with the other nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine players that had started the game on launch day had all been forced to face this new reality. This new life. Their reality scattered to the winds and replaced with a shell of its former self.

Almost as though sensing that something was troubling Bahr, Swine Bajesus emerged from his pocket and maneuvered its way to atop his shoulder, regarding its master with scorn. It was disappointed with him for being so weak of mind. A few minutes alone, and he was already lamenting the nature of his imprisonment. But, could one really blame him? It was, after all, a fairly hopeless situation. Over two years in the game and they had only managed to clear a quarter of the game, not even. They would all be dead from malnutrition far before the game itself was cleared.

No, that was more of the same negative thoughts that Swine Bajesus was upset with Bahr for. He shook his head and gave the tiny boar a pat before lifting it from his shoulder and sliding it back into his inner coat pocket. He was fortunate to have a partner like this, but ultimately it was just pixels like everything else that surrounded him.

Bahr had been so lost in thought that he had actually stopped paying attention to his map. Not like it particularly mattered, given that it wasn't going to help him much at this point anyways, given how expansive the network of caves was. At least the cave was lit. He dismissed the window and rounded a corner, stopping dead in his tracks as soon as he saw what was on the other side.

Standing no further than fifty paces from where he stopped was none other than the object of his mission; the Manticore. It looked exactly as Ali had described it, a mishmash of various different animals smashed together into one final grotesque product. Bahr visibly grimaced when he saw it. Luckily, it appeared as though he had not yet been spotted by the creature. He was going to have the opportunity to land the first strike.

Manticore found!

Spoiler

Encounter: Manticore
HP: 647 | DMG: 65 | MIT: 50 | ACC: 3 | EVA: 2
Inflicts T2 Burn damage on non-critical successful attacks after modifiers, except an 8.
Double attack: The chimera attacks twice in one turn, once on a successful BD and second on a successful MD. Evasion/Accuracy or any kind of Battle dice related action applies to the Monster dice as well. This acts as two distinct normal hits, each being mitigatable.
Partial Phase: The chimera will always deal a minimum of 24 normal damage per hit, even through Armor and Armor Abilities/Mods. Except for the following Fire Breath attack.
Fire Breath: On a natural BD/MD of 8-10, the chimera will breath fire, releasing a AoE attack that will affect all players fighting it for 40 normal damage and Tier 2 Burn Damage per post, for the next 2 individual player post. It is possible to simultaneously release 2 Fire Breath attacks if the BD and MD meet the requirements for it. In this case, Burn Damage does not stack but resets post count, while the normal attack damage combines into 80 normal damage; this value is then mitigatable.

Bahr wasn't going to take any chances with something that looked this tough. He readied his sword and poured his energy into it, the blade beginning to vibrate in anticipation and adopt a scarlet hue as it waited for the energy to be released. Bahr then dashed in toward the unaware beast, gouging the sword deep into its thick hide. His eyes widened as he witnessed his strongest attack barely managed to chunk a fifth of the creature's health away.

And it was none too happy about the surprise attack. It spun around with surprising agility, swiping at Bahr with one of its gargantuan claws. He managed to avoid the attack, but wasn't fortunate enough to evade the fiery breath that followed. It scorched his clothes and flesh, inflicting a burn status affect that licked away at Bahr's health bar even more. Luckily, it seemed that he hadn't been damaged too badly.

"Damn! You're a big boy, huh?" Bahr jeered as he readied his blade once more. Deep rumbles emanated from the Manticore's throat as it strafed him, seemingly waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Bahr strafed as well, and the pair began to walk in circles around one another, locked at the eyes and studying one another's movements. It seemed that Burn damage was going to be what the creature attempted to whittle him down with. Fair enough, Bahr would just have to burst its health bar out before it managed to deal any serious damage.

Without warning, the Manticore lunged forward, and Bahr was ready. He weaved past the first swipe of the creature's claw and counterattacking with a swipe from his own blade. But the beast was too quick, deflecting Bahr's sword before it could hit its mark with its other claw before dashing back and out of range.

Bahr thought that the distance that had been put between himself and the mob might allow for him to get a moment of reprieve, but he was not so fortunate. It reared his massive head back and coughed up a massive blast of fire that surged toward Bahr in a wader arc that he could avoid. The flames surged across his frame, singing his clothes and depleting his health bar much further than it had the first time. When it was finally done, he placed a hand on his knee and bent over slightly, trying his best to catch his breath.

What the hell was that? The first time, the fire had barely hurt him at all. It was the Burn damage that had worked its magic and chipped away at his health. This time, in addition to the Burn damage, the attack itself had managed to chew through his mitigation. On top of that, the beast was so elusive that Bahr was having difficulty getting a bead on it.

Bahr didn't have time to sit around and contemplate. It seemed that the Manticore had learned that using its fiery breath as opposed to dealing damage directly was the way to go. It reared back its head and let loose another stream of fire, seemingly lighter than the last, which scorched Bahr's flesh and reset the Burn timer. This time, however, Bahr wasn't going down without dealing a little damage of his own. Once the attack had concluded, he charged up and dashed forth, getting ready to slash into the creature before realizing-

It wasn't there.

He peeked around looking for it, only to discover that it was used the time that Bahr had spent dealing with the damage to reposition itself. So not only was it powerful, it was smart. As much as Bahr knew the situation wasn't looking good, he couldn't help but feel a little excited. A worthy opponent, at long last.

"Crafty little [censored], aren't ya? I'd love to turn you into a nice coat. Something feminine. Maybe I could convince Kit to wear it and parade your failure around. We'll see, won't we?"

The Manticore roared in response, the decibel level enough to shake the floor of the cavern. Either it was comedically perfect timing, or the thing could actually understand human speech. Regardless, Bahr had gotten what he wanted. It lunged forward in response, taking the physical route as opposed to using ranged attacks. This time, however, it opted to go for a strike with it's scorpion-like tail ass opposed to using its claws. "Stupid," Bahr spat as he easily evading the choreographed strike, charging up his blade and ripping it into the animal with all the force he could muster. It yelped pathetically and jumped back, lowering its head and baring its teeth with a deep, sinister growl.

Yeah, this thing had a temper. It reared its head back and widened its jaw, tangerine hues glowing from between its razor sharp fangs as it prepared its next attack. Bahr was prepared to dodge the incoming beam of fire, but it did something unexpected. It launched an orb of flames into the air which, upon connecting with the cavern's craggy ceiling, burst into countless droplet os fiery energy which rained down upon the battlefield. Bahr raised his forearm to protect his eyes, the red-hot particles of energy singing into virtually every part of his body. There had been no way to avoid the attack.

Bahr lowered his arm once the onslaught of flames had ceased, staring daggers into his adversary. That had been clever. Too clever. If things kept going like this, there wasn't actually any guarantee that Bahr would make it out of here alive. If his health kept falling this steadily, the prognosis didn't look very good.

That was it. This thing needed to be eradicated. Not just so that Bahr wouldn't die, but for the good of all of Aincrad. It just wasn't responsible to allow something like this to live. It was too agile, too powerful, too intelligent. It needed to be put down. To this end, Bahr charged up his blade once more and dashed to his target with astounding speed, reaching the creature in the blink of an eye. His blade tore through it with vicious ferocity, and the beast doubled back with a shriek in response.

It was quick to retaliate, however, regurgitating another bucket of flames directly into Bahr's face. Once again, he held up his forearm to protect his eyes from the fire, the almost liquid material washing over his body and singing his equipment. The odor of burning flesh permeated the cave, setting Bahr's teeth on edge. At the very least, it didn't seem like his health was going anywhere too quickly. The Manticore, on the other hand...

... was hanging by a thread. Bahr's charged blade sliced into the creature, this time inflicting Bleed and dwindling its remaining HP to nearly nothing. And that was it. Nothing left to be done. Any more attacks would just be a waste of Bahr's Energy. Bleed would take care of the rest.

Not that that meant the Manticore was going to go down without swinging. I roared at his expressionless face, rearing back its head and unleashing yet another torrent of fiery material directly at him. He didn't even try to dodge or shield his eyes this time, he simply let the red-hot sensation wash over his unresponsive body. After a few moments, it was done, and Bahr literally laughed in the creature's face.

"You're one of the stronger one's I've ran into lately, but you don't stand a chance. Didn't even get me below half health. What a disappointment. Pathetic."

The chimera yelped back in response, but it was weak. Frightened. Bahr couldn't help but laugh at it again. "You won't be terrorizing anyone anymore. This is goodbye," he jeered as the creature's health bar dipped into full depletion. It was about to lash out with a final attack, but just as its claw was centimeters from Bahr's face, the monster burst into a cloud of blue triangular pixels. They slowly wafted away from one another, eventually dissipating into oblivion, leaving nothing behind of their epic battle other than the scorch marks that now littered the surfaces of the cave as well as Bahr's armor. But they, too, would disappear with time.

A loot panel populated in front of Bahr as soon as the Manticore was gone. Tier Two Light Armor. Taunt, Flame Aura, Mit. It's actually pretty good. Bahr actually contemplated hanging onto the piece of equipment, but only for a moment. If he proved himself to be untrustworthy, Ali might take notice and stop bringing Bahr along on these little adventures. No, it was best to stay truthful in an effort to get himself as close to this wondrous cave Ali seemed to be obsessed with.

Amazingly, Bahr's sense of direction actually seemed to kick in for once, leading him back to the beginning of the cave with little to no effort required. He didn't even have to use the map. How miraculous was that? Obviously, defeating the Manticore had simply improved his self confidence, allowing him to navigate the murky depths of the cavern effortlessly. Yes, that had to be it.

But as soon as he reached the exit, he was accosted by two more pesky thieves. What a drag. "Ahh, right on cue. Alright, let's get this over with." No sooner had Bahr completed his thought than he was upon the pair, his glowing sword ripping into them both and depleting their health bars to nearly zero. They retaliated, of course - not that it particularly mattered. Their blades simply bounced off of his armor like moth running into a lamp. It even made a similar sound.
