[F21 - SP] <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

Since there appeared to be a lull in between the waves of spiders, Bahr decided to take a look around and see if there was anything he could get his hands on. As luck would so have it, there was a treasure chest in the area that had been right under his nose the entire time. How had he missed that? It had been staring him in the face, just waiting for him to come over and take a peak. Bahr almost didn't believe that it could be real, it was so out in the open. There was probably a decent chance that it was a Mimic.

Whatever. He could handle a Mimic. That wasn't an issue. He practically pranced over to the ornate box and couched beside it, reaching out to open it but... hesitating. For some reason, he had a bad feeling about this. Had he ever actually had a good experience with a treasure chest before? Probably not. He only ever got crap from them. Still, something was better than nothing.

When he finally shrugged off his apprehension and actually opened the thing, he found himself as underwhelmed as he usually was when it came to things like this. Once again, a chest had given him mediocre loot. Yippee.

Whatever. At least it hadn't been a Mimic.

His attention turning back to the stomping ground he had been abusing for the last however long, Bahr found himself a bit shocked that more hadn't spawned yet. Worked out for him, allowing him to heal up enough to put himself right back into the green again on health. With any luck, he would perform better against the next batch than he had against the previous ones. Though with his anger setting him on edge, it was anybody's guess how that would turn out.

He suspected that he would probably lose control at some point during the outing, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Part of this whole experience was learning where the line was so he could tow that in a way that allowed him to make use of the rage while also maintaining enough control to have the precision he desired.

And then, finally, the new batch of arachnid suckers materialized into existence. Bout time.

Bahr quickly got to work, jumping into the middle of the horde and charging up his blade as usual. He swung the slab of metal in a wide arc, striking all but one of the revolting creatures he was facing. The last one, apparently more elusive than the three before it, managed to narrowly avoid the tip of the blade and strike back with its massive fangs. They sunk into Bahr's flesh, and he had to wriggle away to prevent the damage it was dealing from getting too high.

He had been so close. So close to finally having a perfect round against these things. He had been on the brink of perfection, and then all of this happened. Completely disappointing. He stared down the creatures with disdain, wishing death for all of them as his temperature began to rise. He was close to popping, he could feel it.

As he charged up his blade and swung once again, the exact same thing happened. He managed to hit all but one of them - and it just so happened to be the same one he had missed the time before.

And for some reason, this just set him off.

He dashed toward the spider, and the strangest thing happened. It actually started to run from him. It knew. It knew that it was being hunted as an animal, by an animal. It was no longer man versus beast. It was beast versus beast. Any part of Bahr that had remained human disappeared for that instance. And try as he might, he could not catch up to the spider went it got into its full stride. He ran and ran and ran until he exhausted all of his energy, only finally stopping the lens of red that had taken over his vision once he stopped.

The spider recognized when his frenetic fervor had finally stopped, and instantly began to close in. But just because Bahr had winded himself, that didn't mean that some lowly pest like that could just waltz up to him and attack. And so he spun, his blade charged, clocking the creature once directly in the face and sending it hurtling into a nearby wall.

The only thing that that creature would see through its eight peepholes would be the crimson outlined silhouette of its death fast approaching. Or, you know, slow approaching. Bahr certainly seemed to be taking his time with it. Was it possible that he had pulled something? A hamstring perhaps? That would have really been something, considering injuries like that weren't supposed to even be possible in the floating castle Aincrad.

And then, he was finally upon it. He looked down at the creature with a silly grin plastered across his face. Well, silly wasn't really the right word. More like sinister. It wasn't a look that someone who knew Bahr could probably ever say they had seen come across his face. Contrary to the usually dual toned eyes of green and red, they were both stained the color of blood now. His two crimson orbs stared into the eight of his adversary, and then, in a flash, it was over.

Splick!

Just as quickly as it ended, the crimson haze was lifted and he felt more himself again. He refused to believe that he was capable of turning into the monster that he became during battles like this. Outright refused. It went against everything he believed he was. There was absolutely no way that someone like him could turn into something so... sinister.

No, that wouldn't be right. The whole point of this excursion was to find himself amidst all of this hate and anger. To simply deny that it had happened would be to deny himself. To deny who he was, in the end.

Pathetic. And he had actually started to believe he could be with someone again. To put the past behind him for the first time in years and focus on the now. It had been a fleeting feeling, and he knew that. He knew that it would probably leave him as quickly as it had come. And even though it played out exactly like he had predicted it would, it still stung. He felt like a monster. Nobody could ever truly love him. He wouldn't allow them to.

Being around him only put them at risk. And how could he do that to someone he had feelings for? He couldn't. He could take on small quests or go to little social gatherings, but he could never allow someone to get close. That would have simply been a fool's errand.

Solitude wasn't Bahr's first choice, but it was the choice that had been thrust upon him. Perhaps, once he could finally get rid of this damn sword, he would be able to move past all of this and become a better person.

No, the time to become a better person was now.

Why wait? Why let the sword decide his fate? Why fall victim to it? Why not learn to harness it? That was, after all, why he was out here training.

Enough of this mental nonsense. It was time to get his head in the game. He needed to harness this rage for good. He couldn't allow himself to become a monster like Ssendom had been. He couldn't allow himself to give into his darker temptations and become the very thing he reviled.

He couldn't allow himself to fall into solitude.

There were too many people depending on him. There were too many people that needed him to be the rock. Beating around the bush with his shortcomings wasn't the key to success. He needed to tackle these demons head on.

And then the next batch of mobs spawned. And he continued to fail. He swung his blade, hit all but one, and two sunk their teeth into his flesh. He managed to fend them off and double back, but then he fell to his knee.

"Damn it! Why can't I do it!? Why can't I harness this!?"

His frustrating voice boomed through the cave-like cavity that the floor resided within, but nobody answered. Certainly not the mobs, which were slowly closing in on him. No matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried, it didn't seem like he was making any headway at all. He continued to miss. He continued to fail to dodge. What the hell was wrong with him? Why couldn't he bring himself to overcome this hurtle and be as good as he knew he could be?

Ever since he had encountered Lessa, this had been a problem. He was apprehensive. He doubted himself and his abilities. Never before had he performed so poorly during a hunt. And the worst part was the fact that he wasn't even enjoying it.

He just didn't find enjoyment in it anymore. The violence, the carnage, the adrenaline rush of a near death experience. As he watched his health tick every closer to zero, he didn't feel that excitement bubbling up inside of him. All he felt was remorse for thinking that this was a good idea. Anxiety that his health was inching closer to zero. Uncomfortable. And to think, that same uncomfortability was the very same thing that had fueled him before. How foolish.

He couldn't believe that he had been so reckless with his life in the past. Why had he done that? He had always known that there were people counting on him - both within the realm of Aincrad and on the outside. But, somehow, that hadn't stopped hiim from running around with wild abandon, attacking most anything that moved and wouldn't give him an orange cursor for doing so.

A flick of the wrist, three dead.

In fact, was that all that had been holding him from going on an all out rampage? The threat of becoming one of those dreaded orange players? The looming possibility of actual consequences? Was that all that had actually been holding him back?

He would have loved to had thought that, no, it was because he was a moral person. But he wasn't sure.

The climb into the higher tiers had started taking their toll on him. He felt himself becoming more robotic with every passing day. Was this what Pinball had meant when he said that the frontliners were barely human? Not necessarily that they had become evil or corrupted, just that they had ceased to feel things like an ordinary person would. Would Bahr suffer the same fate if he continued down along this path as so many had before him? Would he, in the end, be capable of handling the pressure?

Enough of this. He was going to be fine. Bahr was going to be fine. There was not way that he would allow himself to turn into a robot - or become corrupted. It just wasn't who he was or what he stood for. It would take a serious calamity in order for him to turn to something as dark as that. And he had already recognized that things about his personality were changing - so now was as good a time as any to identify exactly what was going wrong and correct it before it developed into a full blown issue. For the time being, things wer still relatively tame, and he need not worry losing himself in the storm. Even with this blade staking its influence over him.

He needed to be strong and press on.

Though, admittedly, the first step probably had to be ditching the sword. It was powerful, and Bahr was grateful that Macradon had given it to him, but it was too much. Bahr even questioned whether or not it would be a good idea to hand it off to the next poor soul that "needed" it. What if it changed them as it had changed him?

Yeah, giving it to someone else at this point would be like handing someone a mattress littered with bedbugs. Even if they really needed a bed, the bugs weren't worth it. And if they hung onto the mattress for too long, the bugs would spread and infect everything they owned and plague them for the rest of eternity. That was not a fate that Bahr would wish on anybody.

Nor himself.

Then it was decided. He needed to find himself a new weapon, explain the situation to Macradon, and either hide or destroy the sword. Probably hide, in all honestly. Even if it was an evil device that led its host down a path of heinous treachery and mental anguish, it was still probably worth hanging onto. For now. You never know when you might just need something like that.

He needed to finish up his hunt and get to work on the rest. With any luck, he could find something quickly and put the Scarecrow's Sickle down for good. Until then, he needed to lean on its power for just a little bit longer.

Before he knew it, the next batch of Cave Spider had spawned. His eyes flickered to his health bar, taking stock of how much life he had left before he was done in for good. He wouldn't help but feel the nervousness rise within him. He hadn't been ready for the next pack yet, and with each encounter his health dipped further and further toward the end. Due to his distracted state, one of the spiders managed to score a gash into him easily when it suddenly leapt forward, raking one of its legs against his torso.

What the hell? Were there claws at the end of its legs? How had Bahr not noticed that before?

No time to sit there and wonder about it now. In response to the jarring interruption to his internal monologue, Bahr charged up his blade and ripped it into the whole pack. Miraculously, it seemed that he had managed to score a hit against all of them.

One more slash, and all of the mobs were kaput. They exploded into billions of minuscule blue fractals instantaneously, the azure dust scattering to the winds and slowly fading into oblivion. After a moment, one of the most lucrative loot panels in Bahr's entire career populated before his eyes. 25,803 col. What an absolutely ridiculous number. What would Bahr even spend the money on? He had lost count of his total col acquisition for this hunt longer ago. Curious, he opened up his inventory and tallied up the lootings since he began.

155,743 col.

That was more than he had ever possessed at one time. Having started out the hunt with barely over 100,000 col, he had more than doubled what he had had previously. It was absolutely mind boggling. He could completely upgrade and furnish the hell out of his house with this sort of cash. Seeing as there wasn't much else to spend his money on in Aincrad, he had a feeling that that was exactly what he would do.

Or perhaps he would spend some of it on a respect for his Skill Points. He had picked up the Searching Skill, but he wasn't really convinced that it was working out for him. Sure, the loot and col that he was acquiring were insane, but it seemed a bit gratuitous at this point. If it was his goal to aim for the Frontlines, it didn't really make sense to go around squandering his SP on flippant skills that had close to nothing to do with combat. His lucky boots, a luck consumable, and he would be good to go. No reason to use a skill for even more luck.

Yeah, that would have to be one of the first things that he did. Dump his skill points into more combat-oriented skills. It seemed like the smart thing to do. Perhaps if he became more proficient at combat, he wouldn't spiral into these madening fits of rage every time the opportunity presented itself. Though, perhaps that was a pipe dream, as well. The Scarecrow's Sickle really seemed to have its claws dug in deeply.

Or did it? What is possible that all of this was just in Bahr's head? Was it so ridiculous to entertain the notion that the source of his rage could be coming from within, rather than externally? After all, it did seem a bit strange that a virtual object could be having such an influence on him, despite its origin. Could ones and zeroes really carry so much weight? Could they really push him to the edge and over? Had Bahr's mind degraded in this hellscape to the extent that he had actually allowed himself to believe these fairy tales?

It was too early to find the answer to any of these questions.

If he could just get his hands on a different sword. If he could just try out something else. Even for a day. He was sure that he could find the answers. But he felt compelled to use this thing now. After all, Macradon had entrusted him with it. He had been tasked with passing it down to the next promising two-handed sword wielder. But how many of them could be left? And if the sword was influencing him, could he really pass that legacy on to someone else?

As usual, he didn't have enough time to sit around and figure things out. Once again, Cave Spider had spawn all around him, and within seconds he found himself on the defensive. Two lunged at him at the same time from opposing angles, and he managed to sidestep both. As the spiders clumsily collided with one another, a third jumped over them toward Bahr, but quickly found a sword in its face. As the gigantic slab of metal cleaved forward, the two that had jumped at him first also found themselves caught in the fray, and all three of their health bars dipped into the yellow. The fourth and final Cave Spider was not far behind, lunging toward Bahr's back while he was distracted. By some stroke of dumb luck, it actually completely missed him without him having to do anything. Perhaps the evasion buffs were finally starting to kick in.

Say what you will about the mobs of Aincrad, but they know how to bounce back quickly. Bahr barely even had time to catch his footing after the last attack before they entire pack was upon him yet again. Once more, in a stroke of complete luck, he managed to thwack all four of them before they could reach him, avoiding any and all damage while causing three of the mobs to burst into clouds of crystalline azure polygons. Bahr did his best not to take a peek at the loot panel that populated afterward, not wanting to risk the final Cave Spider rearing up and getting a cheap shot on him while he was distracted. Sure enough, the creature was quick to pick itself up off of the ground and take another pass at him, but Bahr was able to easily and nimbly avoid the clumsy attack with little to no effort.

For the first time since he had started the hunt, he had managed to make it through an entire encounter without being hit. The evasion armor was finally starting to pay off. Though, not that it hadn't in the past, just that it didn't really seem to have been doing its job during the hunt up until this last encounter. Still, though, Bahr was going to take the victories where he could get them. It was better than losing more health and becoming even more nervous than he already was.

With a single slash, the Cave Spider was reduced to bits. Bahr stood still for a moment after delivering the killing blow, his tired frame trembling ever so slightly as he gasped for breath. He hadn't realized just how tired he had become during the fights. It seemed like, all at once, the sensation of becoming a brick of a human being settled into him.
