[F21 - SP] <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

Perhaps it was time to take this venture to a different floor. One that was a little more his speed, and perhaps not filled to the brim with mobs that were above his level. After so he departed from the hunting spot, making his way back to the nearest settlement and teleporting to the eleventh floor.

FLOOR 11

Taft - the main settlement of the eleventh floor. It had never really left a lasting impression on Bahr, which was probably to be expected at this point. Why would any of the towns he passed through on his way to a hunt become super memorable?

After waking through the woods for awhile, Bahr came across his favorite Tier Two hunting location. As opposed to how it usually was (swamped with mobs), it was actually completely vacant at the time. Likely that the system hadn't generated any mobs because there was nobody nearby enough for the past several hours (or possible even days) to prompt it.

As he waited for mobs to spawn, he perused the list of physical loot he had acquired so far. Tons of perfect armor and weapons, perfect consumables, perfect trinkets, the works. The only problem was that all of it was Tier Three. Considering he wouldn't be Tier Three until some point in the murky future, it was difficult to find any use in them just yet. At the very least, though, he had something to look forward to once he reached that level. Provided the equipment actually offered anything useful to him once it was identified, that is.

In the meantime, it would behoove him to acquire some Tier Two equipment to tide him over until the big switch. That being said, there was a distinct lack of mobs in the area at the moment. Something he wasn't accustomed to when coming here. he figured that some would have spawned by now, but they really seemed to be taking their time.

Just as he was thinking that, he felt the sensation of something pinching into his back. Like a razor sharp vicegrip, the pincers of a grotesque overgrown ant tore into his frame, abruptly reducing his HP and forcing him to lurch forward involuntarily to escape the clutches of his aggressor. He unsheathed his blade and poured his energy into it, turning around and slashing in the direction of the insect that had accosted him.

And it was a good thing that he did, because the bug was accompanied by three more identical models. Luckily, his attack had managed to slice into all four od them, rendering the other three unable to connect an attack being thrust backward. Bahr gripped the hilt of his blade tightly as he prepared for combat. Though the mobs of the eleventh floor were certainly less aggressive than the twenty-first, Antmen were nothing to toy around with.

One more slash and it was all over. Four Antmen down, reduced to sapphire dust the scattered with the breeze that rolled through the area. When the loot panel populated, Bahr's eyes just about popped out of his skull. Over 30,000 col, several Perfect quality items, armor, and more. It was the motherload. Never, in his entire career, had he managed to net so much loot in a single attack. Absolutely nuts.

And they had been easier to kill than the Cave Spiders. Even if they were a bit sneakier. Bahr's senses were sharpened now, though. The likelihood of another Antman sneaking up on him and getting a surprise attack like that again were slim to none at all. And while he prided himself on being a durable man among men, Bahr couldn't deny that a few more hits like that and he would be toast. He had to stay vigilant.

But that was a little hard to do when he was so thoroughly wiped out. He was beginning to wonder if going to the eleventh floor for extra loot was a good idea in the end. His encounters with the Cave Spiders from earlier had drained away all of his stamina, and he felt like he had just worked sixteen hours straight doing manual labor. Was the extra loot, materials and col really worth all of the physical anguish?

Well, of course they were. Bahr was sitting at over 200,000 col acquired within a single hunt. He was on the precipice of over tripling the amount that he had had going into this. He was willing to tolerate a lot of guff to come out of this experience with anywhere between 300,000 and 400,000 col. That was the sort of experience that you couldn't put a price on. Except that you could. Because it explicitly dealt with money.

The equipment was what he was most excited about. One of his recent identifications at Dagger's shop had rewarded him with a weapon that had a unique enhancement - payment for all of his trouble on an earlier hunting venture. It wasn't easy running hunts like this solo, but it was definitely worth it in the end. If he ended up with another weapon that had a unique, or better yet, a piece of armor with a unique he could use, that would make him extremely happy.

In fact, judging by the numbers, it was probably more likely that he would get a unique than that he wouldn't. He had acquired so much loot at this point that it was probably a mathematical improbability that he would walk away from this experience with no unique enhancements of anything. Whether the unique enhancements that he could would be of any actual use to him, that remained to be seen.

Speaking of loot, there was the next batch of Antmen. Ripe for the picking. They must have recognized that Bahr was looking at them as though they were nothing more than a meal ticket for him, because they seemed to be particularly ferocious this time in comparison to most times. Rather than trying to be stealthy, they beared their pincers at him in a menacing fashion and made strange ant noises. Was it possible that they planned to avenge their deceased ant brethren?

Fat chance.

Bahr charged up his sword and dashed forward before the pack of humanoid insects even had time to react, his sword cleaving through the lot of them and reducing all of their health bars to the yellow. There was a counter assault, of course, but Bahr was far too nimble to be caught up in such a clumsy rouse. He maneuvered around the volley of attacks and readied his blade for the next round of attacks.

The Antmen were quick to recover and go in for another attack, but Bahr responded with equal ferocity. Once again, he managed to charge up his sword and strike the lot of them before they had a chance to react. One by one, they all burst into azure confetti and dissipated into nothingness.

Finally. The perfect combat.

He had slain all four of them without taking a single point of damage. He had not missed any of them. They had all fallen within two attacks. It was the most optimal result he could have hoped for. And it felt good.

It felt good.

There it was. That sensation of pleasure associated with dominating in combat. He hadn't been feeling it because he, well, wasn't dominating in combat. But this last rotation had been different. He hadn't just won, it had been a very convincing victory. This was what he had been hoping for.

The loot was always a welcome reward, too. Once again, he had come away from the encounter with a plethora of col and various unidentified artifacts. It seemed that his stash of Tier Two loot was beginning to accumulate as well - though something was telling him that he wouldn't invest as much time into acquiring Tier Two gear as he had spent on Tier Three. The sky was beginning to adopt a scarlet hue, and he had no desire to be out past dark fighting monsters in his exhausted state.

For now, though, he had more time and energy to burn. It would make the most sense to maximize his profit from the venture. If he turned in early, there would always be the "what if" factor. What if he had stayed out for one more and gotten that weapon that he really needed, or what if he had just collected another ten thousand col. There was no way to predict the future, and the way to have the best chances at something good was to continue to persevere.

It was starting to get a little boring, though. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had been at this far longer than he reasonably should have been. How many people went out solo and hunted for an entire day? Not just committed a day to it, but literally fought monsters the entire day? From sun up to sun down? Probably quite a few, but they were a rare breed for sure. And Bahr was now a part of that club. Dedicated to improving combat and acquiring the absolute best equipment he could so he would be prepared when it came time to engage with the Frontlines.

Which still wouldn't be for awhile. But that was no reason for him to feel discouraged. Being overprepared at this stage just mean that he woudn't have anything to worry about when he actually finally graduated to that level. And that was a good feeling.

Bad move. He should have gotten away when he had the chance. But he had gotten cocky, and now he was paying the price. While he had been distracted, the next group of Antmen snuck in toward him from behind. Three out of the pack managed to score hits against him at the same time - their giant pincers cleaving through his body in three different locations. His HP, which had been steadily recovering, plummeted once more. He was in really dangerous territory now - only two hits from death, surely. And with four opponents, that was always a troublesome reality to face.

And so he spun around, swinging his sword clumsily, managing to only clip two of them. This was getting really bad now. Even if he managed to hit all foud on the next attack, it still left open the opportunity that the remaining two could do him in. Or, worse yet, if he missed some of the ones that were closer to death, he faced the very real threat of being dispatched by their attacks as well.

When he cleaved forward the blade again, he was pleased to find that it managed to find its mark in all four of his enemies. Two of them combusted into clouds of blue pixels, while the remaining two launched their counter attack. Bahr was able to dodge the first one easily enough, but the second had predicted where he would land and took measures to ensure that its attack would land there. It successfully sunk its pincers it's Bahr's torso, causing him to gag and double bag.

Red. Flooding in from his peripheries. He had never been this close to death before. Was it the game causing his vision to turn scarlet? Or was it his own rage, which was now surging to the surface faster than he could ever hope to contain it?

Not that he wanted to anyways.

This was the adrenaline he craved. This was what had kept him going through everything that had led him to this moment. He couldn't let a few measly mobs like this do him in. He would never be able to live it down. Or, well, live at all.

No. Not like this. Not against these revolting weaklings. They didn't have the right to take his life.

unleas10.jpg

Vibrant scarlet hues blasted into existence around Bahr, coalescing around his hunched over frame as the unadulterated rage erupted from his body. What he had before tried to keep bottled up now burst from his every seam, thick crimson energy practically dripping from his every orifice as he looked up and regarded the two remaining Antmen with a murderous intent so palpable it literally sent a shockwave coursing through the area. Was this a feature of the game? Some unknown skills that burst to life when Bahr needed it most? Who really cared in the end?

And then he was gone.

Only to reappear behind the pair within milliseconds of his abrupt departure, dispatching them both instantly with a slash so vicious and swift that the untrained eye would have missed it completely. And as soon as they gone, so too was the aura. Left behind was Bahr, gripping his chest, gasping desperately to catch his breath, health bar still wedged in the red zone.

What the hell was that? Bahr had entered states of pure rage before, but nothing like that. Nothing that incurred an actual physiological change, or anything crazy like an aura like that. He had heard about these things called 'Unique Skills' in the past, but he had never imagined that he would be fortunate enough to receive one. But had he, actually? It didn't seem like anything that came him an advantage by the numbers.

He hastily opened his inventory and navigated to the Skills panel, investigating to see if anything new had turned up. To his dismay, there was nothing new there. Not even anything new that he had access to spend Skill Points on. With a sigh, he dismissed the window and once again resigned himself to the fact that he wasn't truly special in this world. Just really stubborn, and with a tendency to lose his cool in combat.

Or, perhaps, it had been foreshadowing for what was yet to come. Perhaps he would eventually have access to a Unique Skill, and this was merely a precursor to that. Did he need to learn how to control what had just happened to gain access to the skill? It was difficult to say.

There was also the much more likely possibility that it had been the sword. Perhaps, despite its best efforts to corrupt its user, it still didn't want him to die and would do everything in its power to prevent that from happening. Even taking full control of its host if absolutely necessary.

Come to think of it, what was the Unique Skill that Ssendom had had? The original owner of the Scarecrow's Sickle. 'Berserker,' wasn't it?

That seemed awfully akin to whatever transformation Bahr had undergone. Was it possible that the Berserker Unique Skill still had a residual impact on the game, even after Ssendom's death? Could the sword be a carrier for whatever those residual remains were?

Would Bahr become the next Berserker if he continued to use it?

He would have to figure it out later. There was another mob approaching. While distracted by the possibility of having earned a Unique Skill, Bahr had neglected to leave this area in search of a place that was more safe and accommodating. The silver lining was that there was only one mob this time, so there wasn't as much of a risk as there had been previously. At least, that's what he was hoping. There was really no way of making that guarantee, was there?

But one target should be fin. He charged up his blade and got the first strike, thwacking the creature and sending it flying through a nearby tree. The tree splintered and cracked and fell the ground with a deafening boom, disintegrating into a cloud of blue dust shortly thereafter. Somehow, the mob had survived this, however. How, Bahr would wonder for the rest of his life. But that was no problem - one more good hit would do the revolting bug in for good.

And so it did. One more cleave of his gigantic sword through the air, and the creature was gone for good. All that was left behind was the azure dust and a loot panel, which displayed a decent amount of col and another perfect weapon. The edges of Bahr's lips curled into a wicked grin as he examined the panel before dismissing it. A perfect weapon? Something more perfect than he already had? That was the talk of a fool.

But wait - wasn't he trying to get rid of this damned blade?

That's right. He was trying to free himself from its clutches. So why had he so very suddenly transitioned into thinking it was the perfect blade? What had that most recent outburst changed in him, besides the obvious? Had the sword clawed its way into his mind even further, burrowing itself within his cerebellum and making a home for itself there? Was Bahr now doomed to believe that this was his only way of life from this point on?

Another mob. So soon? And only one, just as it had been with the previous encounter. It seemed that Bahr had managed to throw off their spawning pattern. Which was fine, having only one target to concentrate on at a time made things much easier, and a hell of a lot safer. Even if it meant that he would collect loot at a slower rate, this was a consequence that Bahr was willing to accept. The possibility of death seemed far worse than not getting loot super fast.

As he had with the previous mob, Bahr dashed in and thwacked it with his blade, sending the creature flying off into the woods. A tree did not collapse this time, so the poor thing got hurtled out even farther than the last one had. Which was honestly pretty funny, at least in Bahr's eyes. Instead of chasing after it, he buring the tip of his sword into the ground and waiting patiently for it to come back. He had its aggro, so he knew it wasn't going to rest until either he killed it or outran it. It would return soon enough.

And boy, it sure took its sweet time getting back. Like, ten minutes at least. It was a miracle that nothing else had spawned in the area while Bahr was waiting. At one point, Bahr actually forgot what it was that he had been waiting for. He just came to the sudden realization that he was waiting in the middle of a clearing in the woods for no discernible reason, leaning against his sword and letting the time pass him by as the sun continued to set. It was almost over the horizon now.

But then he remembered it. Yes, he was waiting for that pesky Antman he had smacked into the woods. Yes, that's why he was standing there goofily without so much as a care in the world. Well, expect the wave of anxiety he was still riding from having come so dangerously close to death not half an hour before. But there was hope, as he now saw the Antman scurrying through the woods in his direction. It seemed that the humanoid insect hadn't forgotten about him after all.

And as soon as it was within striking range, Bahr thwacked it again so hard that it flew right back into the forest once more. But before it could get too far, it combusted into a cloud of azure dust that dissipated with the breeze. Just as it dissolved into nothingness, the sun officially went down over the horizon. Satisfied with the day's events, Bahr sheathed his sword against the small of his back and wandered toward the edge of the clearing.

It was time that he got home and rested. The day had been a particularly taxing one. It was bizarre to imagine that he had come closer to death today than perhaps ever before. Even Swine Jesus didn't get him so close to death, right? Actually, it had. That's right, it had gotten him within one hit of being toast. But that was so long ago, and he had been so inexperienced at the time. Was this an example of him returning to that inexperienced state?

Nah, he just killed hordes of mobs all day. He was good.
