It was about time to do some more grinding. Oscar consumed a veritable smorgasbord of buffs and consumables to get ready for the occasion. He was running low on alchemist buffs for damage. He was beginning to think that he would have to find a new go-to alchemist as his order from the Tipsy Witch still had yet to be filled. Either way, Oscar was fully prepared. So off he went to floor 11 to get his grind on. He heard of a particularly choice farming spot in a cavern tucked into one of the Antmen lairs. It was risky, but it the reward would be well worth it. He followed the directions exactly and eventually came to an expansive cavern where resources were abound. He could hear the chittering of the antmen in the distance so he readied his sword. It was about time to fight.

From deeper within the cavern, the antmen filed out one-by-one. They encircled Oscar and his familiar, the deadly edges of their spears pointed directly at the pair. With his blade at the ready, Oscar tapped the guard with the side of his clenched fist. Emerald-green light winked into existence, cloaking the blade in its radiance. Two warm-up slashes. Not so much intended to deal damage as they were a required animation of the Sword Art. Then, quick as a flash, Oscar whipped his weapon around his body three times. Each pass carved chunk after chunk out of the health bars of the Antmen. By the time he was done, Oscar had half-depleted the health of his foes with a single attack.

Then the Antmen sprang into action. Oscar danced between their blows, weaving in between the deadly edges of their spears. One of the Antmen was more precise than his peers and managed to score a clean hit. Thanks to his armor, however, he was able to avoid suffering the majority of the damage. Oscar came to a stop, allowing himself a moment for the pain to ebb away. The Antmen encircled him once more. He stood motionless as they did. Their programming set them up to be vulnerable to wide-area attacks and it would be inefficient to try to disrupt that.

The second round had begun. Emerald-green light flowed upward from guard to tip, following the edge of his blade. His two warm-up slices flew out, hitting nothing but air. But then, Amatsu no Homura came out in earnest. Three strikes cleaved through the ranks of the Antmen surrounding him. Each slice brought each one closer and close to defeat until, finally, they all shattered. Oscar was rewarded with a loot interface. Many items were dropped into his pack, alongside a king's ransom of Col and materials. The latter was the true reason he was here. He could really care less about unidentifieds at this moment. He just needed Col and Materials to help maintain his shop. With his energy nearly half-depleted from the combat, Oscar sheathed his sword and made a point to avoid getting into any further combat for the time being. At least until his energy regenerated.

With nothing else better to do, the prudent course of action was to begin gathering materials by hand. Risking combat at this point would be a fool's errand. He couldn't possibly kill another pack of four until his energy restored to full. Ergo, the gathering. He searched around, looking for a glowing spot to gather from. The problem wasn't so much finding a spot as it was successfully gathering from one he found. It took several attempts, but finally he was able to successfully gather an onion from the dirt. Was were there onions growing in a cave? Video game logic most likely. He wasn't complaining, however. Onions were the perfect toppings for hot dogs. He felt he had worked himself into a corner with the hot dog motif. At this point, they were beginning to grow dull. But, his name was Oscar. It would be foolish not to stick with the brand name pun.

Oscar continued to search around as his energy regenerated. It wouldn't be long now before he was back at full capacity and would be able to fight monsters for rewards once more. Until then, he busied himself looking for more onions within the cavern. It was strange to find so many of them growing here. Regardless, he failed more than he succeeded. But, finally, succeed he did. Oscar tugged an onion free of the dirt and added it to his pack. Just in the nick of time too. He heard the clicking of the Antmen's mandibles in the distance. They must have just respawned and were coming back to do battle with Oscar once more. He drew his blade and placed both hands on the handle. He hoped that by the time the Antmen reached him and combat began that his energy would tick back up to full. Otherwise, he'd have to try escaping and coming back.

The Antmen filed in, yet again. Their mandibles clacked together as their stick-like legs bore them into the cavern. They seemed to form something of a marching cadence with the sounds of their clicking. It was quite interesting to watch. Like the previous group, they surrounded Oscar, their spears pointed directly at him. Oscar readied his blade as it erupted with emerald-green light. Two slices came out and then he whipped his sword around his body three times, carving off progressively larger chunks of the Antmen's health bars with every pass. They lashed out with their spears, but Oscar deftly danced between their deadly tips, emerging completely unscathed by the assault. He readied his blade again as his Recovery enhancement restored a little extra energy to his pool. Round two was coming up.

Round two was a resounding success. Cloaked in the emerald aura, his blade carved through the ranks of the Antmen like a hot knife through butter. One by one, they each shattered into a thousand pieces, scattered to the winds. In their place were loot windows. Loot windows that Oscar hurriedly interacted with. He could hear the clicking cadence of another wave of Antmen approaching. He wanted to be ready for when they inevitably surrounded him and began combat. Materials and Col rained down upon Oscar, filling his wallet and stores with much-needed resources. The clicking grew louder and Oscar knew he didn't have much time. He could pick through the loot he wanted later. For now, he needed to get ready to fight. He was a little leery about entering combat with such little energy, but such is life.

The Antmen filed in and, just like the last group, surrounded him and pointed their spears at his body. Not wanting to become a human pincushion, Oscar immediately through out an <<Amatsu no Homura.>> His weapon blazed with verdant radiance as he carved through the Antmen's ranks. He managed to hit all but one of them. No big deal. He could catch it on the next pass. The Antmen responded by jabbing their spears at Oscar from all directions. Through a combination of evasiveness, blocking, and a little luck, Oscar was able to escape completely unscathed. He readied his blade for the next round, hoping to dispatch some of his enemies so he didn't have to deal with so many spears all at once. The full heal bar of one of the Antmen was taunting him. As if to say he would be stuck in combat for an extra round because he was bad at hitting things.

Oscar let fly another <<Amatsu no Homura>>. The Sword Art carved through the ranks of the Antmen, dispatching three of them and dealing heavy damage to the remaining one. It was then that Oscar made a bit of a mistake. You see, he probably should have waited for the remaining Antman to attack, tried to dodge it, and then looted. But he didn't do that. On instinct, he interacted with the loot window. It was at that point, while he was claiming all of his loot, that the remaining Antman plunged its spear into Oscar's back. He swore as the spear was yanked from his back and whirled around, getting ready to dispatch the Antman for good. He had no one to blame but himself for such a poor display of combat. He made a mental note to dodge first, loot later. It would save him much pain in the long run.

Oscar tensed his arm and delivered a powerful onslaught of slashes to the remaining Antman. The wind kicked up by the attack lifted the enemy into the air and sent it flying into a wall. On impact, it shattered into a thousand shards, its health bar having been completely depleted, and presented Oscar with a loot interface. Haku Senpu had never failed Oscar before and it certainly hadn't started now. He collected his loot and left the general area he was standing in swiftly in case more Antmen showed up. He was in no position to deal with any more combat at the moment. Not until his energy regenerated, at the very least. So, it was back to gathering with him. Hopefully luck would be on his side and he could successfully gather more onions for his hot dogs. That would be such a nice thing to have happen, for sure.

His attempts at gathering were met with endless frustration. Every node he attempted to harvest failed right as the progress bar was nearly full. Rather than become upset and have it throw off his focus, Oscar sat down upon a rock and really took in the scenery around him. Not that there was really much to see. If you've seen one cavern, you've seen them all. What took Oscar by surprise was just how plentiful the gathering nodes were here. And they all looked to be onions. He would have to mark this location on the map as "Onion Cave" in case he ever ran low on toppings for his hot dogs. It was a laughable concept. One material could translate into a fully-cooked hot dog, bun and all, with all the trimmings. But it still tickled him to have a place called "Onion Cave" in his little black book of grinding locations. Humor was fun.

With the thought of "Onion Cave" fresh in his mind, Oscar elected to go ahead and get himself some more of those sweet, sweet [censored] foods while he had the opportunity. There were no Antmen in sight, but Oscar knew that wouldn't hold up for very long. This time, he didn't run into the same issues as the last time he attempted to gather materials. The very first material he attempted to gather wound up being a resounding success. By which I mean, he had gathered two whole onions instead of one. Oscar pocketed the items and he heard the tell-tale clicking of mandibles in the distance. Oscar by no means was prepared for deal with any combat at the moment, but perhaps by the time the Antmen truly arrived he would be. It would only take few more seconds for his energy to zip back up to full. When that happened, he would be ready to go.

The clicking of the mandibles grew ever louder as the Antmen approached the cavern. With his energy restored, Oscar was ready to do battle. Same as before, the Antmen encircled him, pointing the deadly tips of their spears towards his body. Oscar's blade began to shine with a radiant green energy as he performed his warm up slashes and then cleaved through their ranks with <<Amatsu no Homura>>. With all of the Antmen now firmly in the yellow, Oscar got ready to dodge. He danced in between their blades, but got caught in the leg by one of the spears. He swore and winced in pain, but he didn't let that keep him down for very long. Next round would end the fight anyway, so he cared very little for whatever damage they did to him. All he had to focus on was keeping them from swarming him before he was ready for his next round of AoE.

The second <<Amatsu no Homura>> came out quick as a flash. Each strike cleaved progressively larger chunks of health away from the Antmen. Until, with their health values having reach zero, the shattered one-by-one. In their wake, they left much loot. Oscar collected his hard-earned spoils and heard the sound of clicking in the distance once more. The second wave was approaching. He was a touch leery about going into combat at only half energy, but he decided to push his luck. If worse came to worst, he would need to flee combat. He still had a king's ransom in Col, materials, and other items. He wasn't at all concerned about the prospect of needing to run away. So, he readied his sword and waited. Soon enough, the Antmen would appear and the next wave would begin. He looked towards the tunnel with a bored expression as the clicking grew louder and louder.

The march of the Antmen led them straight to Oscar. The encircled him, pointing their spears at his body. He readied his blade. Once they had completely encircled him and drew in close enough that he could almost feel the tips of their spears brushing against his skin, he struck. With a verdant light, his blade traced a trail of green light in the air as he cleaved through the Antmen. Well, two of them. The other two must have been more elusive than the others, because they were able to dance away from the deadly edge of Yukianesa at the last moment. Combat already wasn't faring well. Distracted by this development, he provided just enough opening for two of the Antmen to skewer him with their spears. He only had enough energy left for one more AoE and it definitely wasn't going to kill the Antmen he had miss. Oh well. He could collect some loot from this fight at least.

Quick as a flash, Oscar whipped his blade around him three times in rapid succession. As he expected, he had only managed to reduce the healthier duo to half health before he had run out of steam. He danced in between their spears before collecting his loot, learning from the last encounter that looting only set himself up to be hit. Then, he decided to somersault over one of the Antmen and try and get some distance. Pin one behind the other so he could more easily dodge their attack while he attempted to flee combat. Of course, it seemed as if the system made the Antmen more aggressive now that he was out of energy. They gave him very little room to maneuver, both of them attempting to flank him and cut off any means of escape. It was very unlikely that he would be able to fully disengage while both of them were alive. He'd just have to bide his time and try anyway.

Though they were definitely more aggressive, the Antmen were also decidedly less accurate than when they had fully-formed ranks. Oscar was able to deftly dance, parry, or deflect the incoming blows. Two antmen definitely couldn't encircle him so he had plenty of room to maneuver, even though they were staying on top of him as much as possible. Nevertheless, he tried to head towards the entrance of the cavern, but one of the Antmen cut him off and forced him to dance away from his prize. The AI was smart, Oscar would give it that. His energy ticked up a bit more. It wouldn't be long before he would have enough for a lower-tier Sword Art that would dispatch one of the Antmen. There was no sense losing his head. He had plenty of health. They could wail on him with impunity until he gathered his energy and they still wouldn't be able to kill him.

Just a bit longer now. Thankfully, his Recovery enhancement activated and gave him a shot boost to his energy. Oscar merely needed to hold on for one more round and then he would be able to dispatch one of his targets. He parried their blows, trying to get enough breathing room to make a break for the entrance. But every time he got close, one of the Antmen was forcing him back towards the other. It was certainly good practice, but Oscar didn't enjoy being stuck in this deadly waltz with no way out. But all of that would change next turn. With only one enemy left to worry about, it would be much easier to escape their clutches. He just needed to bide his time a little longer and be patient. That was all. Right now, he wasn't showing any signs of having trouble keeping up with their blows, so there was absolutely no reason to panic.

Oscar planted his feet and turned to the Antman with the highest remaining health. His blade moved quick as lightning as it kicked up a fierce gale. The wind shear carved deep gashes into the Antman's exoskeleton. Finally, a final burst of wind sent it flying into a wall, where it then shattered. Again, Oscar made sure to dodge the remaining Antman's attacks before collecting his loot. As it was placed in his inventory, Oscar inched closer and closer to the exit. If he let the Antman put itself between himself and the exit, he would never get out of here. The Antman tried to maneuver Oscar away, but he was able to keep his back to the exit as he dodged and danced around the attacks. He wouldn't be denied here, nor would he be forced to wait until his energy regenerated enough for a second Haku Senpu. He wanted to go home and he would be leaving next round.

Oscar 576/600 HP | 4/60 EN | 19 DMG | 4 ACC | 3 EVA | 51 MIT | ID: 124716

Fleeing Combat. LD20. Success.

Antman3 132/300 HP | 90 DMG ID: 124714 MD4-3. Miss.

The moment he saw an opening in the Antman's attack, Oscar sheathed his blade, turned his back on the enemy, and booked it for the exit. He sprinted out of the cave in nothing flat, leaving the Antman and its spindly legs in the dust. Oscar didn't stop running until he was back firmly within the safe zone. He didn't want to get stuck in combat with anything else on his way home. One good thing about this being a video game was that one didn't feel as winded when they sprinted as hard or long as Oscar did. He made a beeline for the Teleportation Platform and transported back down to Deepedge. Once there, it was only a short jaunt back home. After dinner and some cleaning up, Oscar headed to bed with his familiar. It had been a long, profitable to day he just wanted to lie down, unwind, and get some rest. Indeed, some well-deserve rest and relaxation was just what the doctor ordered.
