[F10 - Grandmaster Appraiser] You've Hit the Jackpot

Recommended Posts

Nobody ever goes to Floor Ten. It's home to countless creepy crawlies such as Cave Spiders, Giant Centipedes, and more. On any given night you may hear the wretched shriek of that infernal Banshee. The abandoned jail that overlooks much of the floor casts a sinister tinge across its every nook and cranny, filling your casual adventurer with an unsolicited sense of dread and foreboding.

But for those willing to look beyond its flaws, they'll find one of the most vibrant floors that the floating castle Aincrad has to offer. Luminous crystals and vibrant flora fill the cave-like expanse with a soothing glow, and the dead quiet can work wonders for a loud mind overcrowded with invasive thoughts. They can also find Jackpot's shop, a small hole in the wall - literally - in which the interior matches the exterior.

Some people might be reluctant to buy goods from a goofball that lives in a cave inside of a cave. Then again, you aren't most people, are you?

IMPORTANT NOTICE: RULES
1.) You must pay in advance for Identifications.
2.) Please keep the items in your list organized (groups weapons together with other weapons, armors with other armors, consumables with other consumables, etc.)
3.) Try using the word spelunker in your post, if you feel like it. Jackpot hates that word with a passion, for some reason.

Neo walked into the shop, a large bag slung over her shoulder instead of her usual parasol. This place seemed new, as much as the already dank smell made it seem like. Still, it would be a place for her to finally unload some gear that she really didn't need. Giving a nod to the shopkeeper, she dumped out the contents of the bag, what would probably be a literal ton of food in the real world. Sending a message with a col amount that was her quote, she waited for the transaction to be approved. No sense dawdling here any longer than she needed to.

Imagine opening up a shop in the middle of nowhere and getting a weird customer within the first ten minutes.

Imagine a gigantic smile creeping across your face as you take a deep breath, opening your mouth in preparation to welcome your first customer with exuberance and help guide them through your wares.

Imagine the soul-crushing realization that they were only there to unload their stuff onto you.

Jackpot didn't need to imagine.

He begrudgingly snatched the sack and rifled through it. It was a ton of food. Like, a literal ton, or at least it would have been in the real world. After a few moments of ruminating over the disappointment of not actually getting to sell anything during his first exchange, he junk sold the heap and paid the woman her dues. Afterward he grunted and made a dismissing gesture with his hands, taking a seat on his stool behind the counter and burying his face in his palms.

It was a good thing that Dederick had Jackpot on his friend list, otherwise he never would have found this place. He walked into the cave inside of the... cave, regarding the violet-haired ruffian behind the counter with scorn as he entered. Jackpot seemed surprised that Dederick had managed to find him. "Nice place you've got here. Maybe now you can start paying me back for trapping me in this hell," he spat, throwing some equipment on the counter. "I'd say that once you've done work for me totaling to 10000 col, we'll be even."

It may have seemed like a joke at first, but the stone cold expression that Dederick wore proved that he was dead serious.

Jackpot played it cool for a minute after hearing Dederick's demands. He even chuckled a bit at it. Before long, the chuckling turned nervous. Then it stopped as he realized Dederick was dead serious. "T-ten thousand col!? Are you out of your mind!?" he shot back, raising his voice as he leaned over the counter. Dederick didn't flinch. With a sigh, he leaned back and let out a huge, exasperated sigh. He had just started this business, and already he was over a barrel. He didn't have to do anything for the kid, but Dederick was right. Jackpot was partially responsible for getting them into this mess.

"Fine," he relented with a scowl as he snatched up his magnifying glass, examining the pieces of equipment and... thing that Dederick had placed on the counter along with them. Was that a muffin? Pasta ball? Strange meat? It was impossible to tell. Before long, everything had been properly identified. "This brings your IOU down to 6320. Don't you think for a second that I won't keep tabs, because I will."

Day 2

Jackpot scowled at his luck. Brand new shop and he was already bleeding money. It wasn't the Dederick didn't have a point, but it's not like Jackpot knew they would end up trapped in this stupid game. Did the little religious boy really think that Jackpot would have dawned the NerveGear as well, had he known? Whatever. Perhaps if he identified some decent gear for the kid, he would lay off.

But no such luck. As Jackpot examined the pile of items he had accumulated from his recent venture out of town, he came to the realization that none of it was much better than what Dederick had found. Curses. He would just need to try again some other time.

Oscar had heard rumors of a new up-and-coming Merchant on Floor 10. So he decided to throw the guy a bone and have him identify some things for him. Oscar stepped into the shop. Or, rather, the cave that served as the shop and dropped a few items from his last hunt down on the counter. They were all Unidentified Tier 2 Equipments. Things he really didn't have much use for but were still cluttering him his inventory all the same. The perfect items to train ones Profession on. In the event that they turned out really nicely, Oscar would love to put them to good use. He had been toying with the idea of swapping his build for a while now. Maybe he'd get lucky here. Oscar dropped some Col on the counter and regarded the shopkeep with a wide grin. The pile of Col was far more than was necessary for the identifications. "Consider it an investment in your business. I know it sucked to get my shop up and running. If you're ever hungry, come on down to Floor 1. I'll have a hot dog waiting for ya."

Jackpot's face rose from where it had been resting on the desk as he heard someone shuffling around his cave. Was it a customer? Robber? What time was it?

When the man in Azure approached and laid the equipment on the table, Jackpot's ears were still adjusting to actually being awake and subjected to desiphering sounds and words. But after a moment of staring at the newcomer with eyes wide as owls and a couple of slow blinks, he finally caught on. Glancing at the panel that populated in front of him, Jackpot did his best to hide his glee. "Thank you for your generosity. I'll have these figured out for you in a jiffy."

The next day...

"Yeah, sorry. That took a lot longer than I thought," Jackpot admitted as he emerged from the back room. He was going to lie about how one piece of armor kept giving him trouble, but the reality was that he had gotten all of the identifications complete within the last five minutes. He had simply fallen asleep again. Rather than lie, he simply chose to omit the truth and say nothing. "Here's your equipment - some are better than others. Let me know if you want to Junk Sell any of them."

"Hnnwha-" Oscar said groggily.

You see, he had waited for quite some time for his identifications to be completed. Unfortunately, it seemed that the man had taken all night and all day to do what should have been some fairly simple identifications. In the first hour of waiting, he began to regret his investment. In his second hour, however, he'd fallen asleep on the counter. Oscar looked over at the items that were identified. The only ones he saw that were worth keeping for himself were the axe and the trinket. Although he didn't have much use for the trinket, he had some prophetic feeling that he would probably be passing it on to some noob eventually. So, he accepted those and then pointed at the Armor that had the rare Frost Thorns enhancement. "Junk the rest, but keep that one for yourself. You can probably get a pretty penny for it. It's worthless to me though. See ya." And so, Oscar exited the cave, Big Chungus and the Mystical Banana in tow.

"Is this really the place?" Bahr mused as he beheld the entrance to the cave. Didn't really seem like a place for a shop. Then again, who was Bahr to judge? His shop was in the ghetto, after all.

It felt strange that there was now a merchant so close to his house, though. It was convenient, for sure, but he honestly felt a little guilty for poking around. He felt like he was betraying Dagger in some way. But Oscar had recommended the place, so Bahr felt compelled to at least check it out.

He sauntered into the cave and silently dropped his load of items on the table, waking the shopkeep who have evidently fallen asleep against its surface in the most jarring way he could. "Need these identified. Think you can do it?"

"Oh course I can," Jackpot said in a grumpy tone, snatching up the items and carrying them toward the back of the shop. "I'll have these out for you soon," he promised as he disappeared into... whatever other extension of the cave there was.

He grumbled as he perused the items, not finding anything particularly of value in the bunch. There was, however, a Trinket that stood out from the rest of the wares, possessing an Enhancement he had never seen before. Perhaps this red fellow would see value in it. Or, perhaps he would leave it for Jackpot to reap the benefits of instead. Either way, it was a win-win.

"Alright, here's the list of the stuff you submitted," Jackpot sounded as he emerged back into the main cavern, a digital panel populating in front of Bahr. "What would you like to do with these, boss?"

Bahr mulled over the list, not particularly seeing anything that he liked. "No, that's alright. I'll let you keep it. Also, here's your payment."

It was a gross over payment for the service the man provided, but Bahr could tell that his shop was just getting started. Besides, perhaps getting on the Merchant's good side now would bode well for Bahr's future. After all, a trip to this shop was a lot quicker than one all the way to Dagger's. "There's a bit extra there for you - hopefully it helps you start off your shop the right way. I actually live on this floor, so I'll be in from time to time."

"... Surely not..." Yukiro glanced at the map he had open. The marker that had put there was indicating that this was the right place. "I more expect to find some kind of troll than any kind of shop, much less a merchant."

Yukiro hesitantly entered the cave. To his utter shock, there was, in fact, a merchant living there. His goofy face simultaneously put him at ease and put him on guard. He tried to think of something to say.
"You must be... quite the spelunker, living here. Haha... ah, pardon, I have some items for appraisal," he said as he opened his menu and began pulling the items out one by one and setting them down.

"Spelunker?" the man's voice inquired, his goofy expression fading into one of neutrality. "Spelunker?" he repeated, leaning forward as his visage became more sour, a tinge of venom added into his inflection.

"SPELUNKER!?" he practically shouted, an expression of pure rage now slung across his face, teeth bared toward his 'customer' and pounding the counter.

He hastily snatched the equipment the man had laid before him and retreated into the back room, mumbling things to himself about how stupid customers could be and how he never should have become a merchant in this wretched world. He emerged only minutes later, tossing the equipment onto the counter and casting a glare toward the newcomer. One thing was for sure - when he was angry, he could actually get stuff done quickly.

"Here's your crap," he spat, leaning against the counter with a single elbow. "For future reference, we don't say that word around here." As the youth began to open his mouth to respond, Jackpot quickly interjected. "Spelunker, spelunking, whatever. Not allowed. Ever. If you can't keep it out of your mouth, don't return. Bye now!" With that, he only offered the kid a dismissive wave, obviously done with the conversation and wanting nothing more to do with him.

The merchant's work was swift and sure, that was for certain.
His personality seemed slippery and somewhat dangerous. That was also for certain. It was certainly made clear that he had no tolerance for the word spelun-- for that word whatsoever.
"S-sorry, my apologies. I meant no offense," he quickly apologized as he examined the items with all his speed. He started adding everything he saw value into his inventory.
Yeah, good equipment. Let's focus on his quality of work.

He left the two swords he'd had identified on the counter. "Um, you can keep the swords. Junk sell them, I suppose, or give them to someone in need."
Another look at the merchant's face showed that there was no room for conversation. It also implied that staying was uninvited if not outright dangerous. Yukiro didn't even bother adding the last item, a small vial of some kind, to his inventory. He just snatched it up and made haste towards the door. "Thank you for your work! I'm sorry! I won't say it again!"

He never said the word spelunker again, for as long as he lived.

Dederick walked into the shop - though calling it a shop seemed a bit too forgiving - and strode to the counter to join whoever was already there. Judging by the angry tones Dederick had heard from outside, it was likely the man had used the forbidden word within Jackpot's domain. Not even Dederick could get away with something like that.

"Evening, Jack," the blond-haired youth mused with a wry grin. "Got something else I need, Hope my tab is still good? Of course it is. Ten Immolation Potions, please." He made the demand without batting an eye, unwavering from his position leaning against the counter. Jackpot seemed to hesitate for a moment, but inevitably gave in and went to retrieve the items. Dederick gave the man beside him a look out of the corner of his eye, along with a very knowing nod. It would probably come as no surprise that a shady character like Jackpot would owe money to someone.

Once he had the items in his possession, he stuffed them away into his inventory and started walking toward the front door. "Thanks, as always," he called out with a backward wave.

Yukiro cautiously entered the cave. He'd made... quite the impression last time. He could only prey things went better this time. He walked up to the table Jackpot was at.
"Pardon me. Er, my apologies for last time. I need to junk sell some items. If I may, of course," he declared nervously. He opened his inventory and summoned out the items, trying to avoid eye contact lest he anger the hermit merchant again.
"That's all I need to get rid of. I'm grateful for your service, it's an important one." With that Yukiro took a step away from the counter. "Again, thank you. And sorry for last time."
The wild Yukiro fled!

Lessa treaded cautiously into the cave, footfalls impossibly loud against the packed earth. Her hands were jammed deep in the pockets of her long, black coat, which she wore over a pink blouse and black slacks. Shopping fully outfitted in her gear always struck her as... uncomfortable. Granted, she never liked shopping, no matter what she wore. But this trip was mandatory, as the purchase couldn’t be helped.

”Uh, hello,” she called out, her voice warped strangely by the cave’s acoustics. “Hi, yeah, I’m looking to purchase five teleport crystals.”

Sleeping at the counter again? Of course he was.

"Mmlrem?" Jackpot driveled as he stirred, his eyes still closed as he slowly lifted his head from the table, a trail of drool connecting his lower lip the the tabletop. He slowly pried his eyelids apart, though only on a squint, peering through the slits toward the source of the noise that had woken him. After a few blinks, his eyes slowly widened and a grin danced between his cheeks.

Who was this goddess standing before him?

He hastily wiped the tendril of saliva on his sleeve and perked up, straightening his back and giving the gorgeous blonde a stiff nod. "Right away, miss!" The line was delivered with enough enthusiasm that he could have sworn an involuntary salute would have followed. Luckily, no such goofiness occurred.

Pulling out one of the drawers lining the counter, Jackpot produced a succession of five crystals, which he laid neatly in a row on the table.

"For someone as stunning as you, the first purchase is on the house. No payment necessary."

Koga hadn't been up to this Floor before. He'd been too busy trying to grind through some of the lower ones and raise his level. Being up here though, it was quite interesting. Foregoing the disgusting colossal insects, Koga actually quite enjoyed the Floor. He'd always had a thing for cool, dark places. When Koga walked into the shop, he waved at the store owner, "Hey there, I was wondering if you could ID some items and sell a couple others." The man set four items onto the counter, a couple of consumables, a trinket and a weapon. "If you could ID the consumables and sell the weapon and the trinket, that'd be great. Oh also, I'll take that Spyglass please."
