Before Bahr could make his way out of the tent, something bizarre started happening. Fiendish zombified husks began to fill the tent en masse, scaring off all of the NPCs and a few of the weaker players who hadn't known what they were getting themselves into. Sure, Bahr hadn't known what he was getting himself into, either. But rather than responding with fear, elation coursed through his veins.

It was a good thing he had stocked up on consumables at the concession stand - it seemed like he was going to need them. Whoever or whatever this 'Jack' character was, he was fair, at the very least. He navigated to his inventory panel and populated two of the foods - an Obnoxious Corn Dog and a Funnel Cake. Within seconds, both were gone, and Bahr felt their effects beginning to take hold. But something felt... different.

OBNOXIOUS CORN DOG CONSUMED (+30 MIT)
FUNNEL CAKE CONSUMED (+3 DMG)

No time to think about that now. The items had been consumed - for better or worse - and the Zombies were closing in. It was time to spring into action.

Locking on to a grouping of four, Bahr poured energy into his sword and sailed forward, slicing into the lot of them before they could react. Well, most of them. Somehow one managed to escape the sharpness of his blade. It should have counted itself fortunate, but something told Bahr that it probably wasn't thinking much of anything at all. Oh well.

Their reaction was... different. Rather than moaning or shrieking or anything of the sort, the sound they collectively uttered seemed akin to laughing. Bahr wasn't the sort to scare easily, but he couldn't help but feel a shiver run up his spine as he deciphered the humored mumbles. Even the one that disintegrated laughed on its way out of this world. What a weirdo.

Whatever. That just made Bahr want to slay them even more. Repeating the same action he had performed before, he poured energy into his blade. As the sword illuminated with a multicolored light, he dove into the horde once more and let loose his attack, cleaving two of the flesh bags into blue mist while the third narrowly avoided taking any damage.

Wait a second.

That was the same one as before! Standing there, taunting Bahr with is full health bar. How could something like this happen? Bahr actually felt compelled to open up his menu and check his stats to make sure that everything was set accordingly, but he knew that there was no need. By all means, he should have hit this thing b y now, but it just so happened that it was ludicrously lucky.

And now it was laughing at him. Literally laughing. Well, about as well as a zombie could laugh, anyways.

"What? You think you can laugh at me? Just because you managed to avoid a few clumsy swings?" Bahr mused, resting the flat edge of his sword against his shoulder. Apparently the zombie did think that it could laugh at him, because it began cackling with even more enthusiasm than before. For a zombie, he was kind of a dick. "Alright, sure. Laugh. We'll see if your vocal chords still work after this one."

He brought back his blade and poured his energy into it once more, this time opting for a different attack. With the other Zombies cleared out of the way, he had the green light to use a more powerful single target attack - the Galaxy Destroyer. Easily his favorite Sword Art, and for good reason. The sword chopped through the mangled walking corpse like a hot knife through liquid margarine, its health bar depleting spectacularly but now quite reaching zero. Still, it laughed.

"Alright, something fishy's going on here," Bahr mused as he adopted a more relaxed stance, looking upon the revolting creature before him with scorn. It hadn't even tried to attack him yet, nor had any of its companions thus far. It could have been because he was killing them too fast, but this one in particular had survived far longer than its brethren. So why didn't it fight? Why did it stand there and act as a (barely) mobile punching bag for Bahr, cackling all the while? None of it made sense.

Whatever. It was time to put this pompous monster out of its misery once and for all. He charged up his blade once more, this time adopting a different hue as he selected yet another Sword Art from his library of available techniques. This time it was Astral Hell, a Sword Art that he had ground quite fond of during his time slowly leveling through the ranks. A few swings of his metal slab later, and the zombie was no more.

With the small horde of Zombies that he had finally managed to dispatch out of the way, Bahr looked around the tent to see how the rest of the players who had stuck around were faring. All about, he saw people charging up various Sword Arts with a variety of weapons, people dipping, ducking, dodging, weaving, and taking damage. Huh, taking damage. So it seemed that these Zombies were indeed designed to attack. But, then, why was it that Bahr hadn't experience anything of the sort?

How peculiar. He wondered if it was a consequence of the Evasion gear he was wearing. Perhaps the Zombies had a line of code somewhere that made them detect things like this and only attack when they were sure they would get a hit. Either that, or they were programmed to have the first batch taunt whoever they were fighting with standing around and laughing, draining the energy out of their adversary slowly. Too bad Bahr had energy to spare.

He saw a lot of familiar faces as he looked around the tent. Oscar was there, doing... Well, doing what Oscar did. He could have sworn that he had seen a flash of Lessa at some point, but he had lost her in all of the commotion. The strange woman who had entered his shop - the one with the sinister aura - was also around. Seemed she used a rapier, which was classy to a certain extent. Her fighting style belied a more ruthless demeanor than he had originally imagined. He'd hate to cross blades with her.

Luckily, at the time being, though, it seemed that she was busy doing her own thing. You know, fighting zombies and whatnot. It was what he should have been doing. But instead, he was just lollygagging around, gawking at the people doing all of the work, slowly letting his energy recover so that he could be ready for the next batch. Come to think of it, hadn't he purchased consumables to that he could recover his energy a little faster in between fights?

Eh, too late. His energy had managed to fully replenish itself without the use of consumables. That was probably for the best - he could hang onto them and use them later once he really got his momentum going. For now, it made sense to take things slow and go one mob at a time. Or, well, four at a time. Whatever fell into his lap at the time, he supposed. Or, in reality, whatever he went hunting for. It wasn't like these things were going to slay themselves, after all.

And so he approached another grouping of four. They all craned their heads toward him, their jaws lazily hanging about and swinging around with the pivot, all staring at Bahr as he charged up his blade. Without skipping a beat, he dashed forward and ripped his sword into the horde. To his surprise, his first attack had much the same effect on this grouping as it had had on the last - one died, two were reduced to the red, and the fourth managed to avoid damage entirely.

Bahr's temper was starting to flare up a bit. Ever since his excursion with Lessa against the Lich King, he had been off of his game. Apprehensive. Unsure of himself. Constantly missing like he was now. How had he been so weak to allow a situation like this ingrain itself so deeply in him? What did he care if some noob got herself hurt? It wasn't his problem, right?

So why had it felt like it was?

Well, it was partially his fault. He had gone against the plan. His actions had almost gotten her killed. In fact, if he just hadn't brought her along, they never would have found themselves in that situation in the first place.

But then, would Bahr be alive? Would the Lich King had had its way with him as it had with Lessa? Bahr shuddered at the thought. Without even realizing it, he poured his frustration into the Scarecrow's Sickle, and as if acting on its own, it lashed out at the grouping of Zombie before them.

To his delight, the three Zombies that remained instantly turned into a heap on the floor, shortly thereafter vaporizing into clouds of triangular azure polygons that dissipated into oblivion near instantly. Once again, his eyes flickered around the tent, looking to see how the fight was progressing for the others who had chosen to attend. From the looks of things, it was a bit of a stalemate at the moment. Plenty of Zombies were being killed, but there were always more to take their place. A near infinite number of them. It reminded Bahr of the Star-Crossed Lovers event that had happened back when he was still green as grass. What had happened with that event, anyways? Had it concluded? What were the rewards? Bahr... couldn't remember. No mattee how hard he tried, he couldn't bring himself to recall what had happened.

Weird.

Feeling his momentum beginning to kick in, Bahr materialized a few of the items he had purchased from the concession stand to recover some of his energy.

Ew. Gross. These knockoff energy drinks tasted horrendous. And sure, they did the trick by raising up Bahr's energy, but only by a marginal amount. He hated the fact that he had bought so many of them. Well, there was no use in wasting them. Even if they tasted like horse pee, he was going to drink every last drop. To be wasteful was... well, wasteful. And Bahr wasn't a wasteful person. Or, at least, he tried not to be.

Another horde of Zombies. Perfect. Bahr was mid-drink when they lumbered over to him, groaning his direction as he helf up one of his pointer fingers as though to say, 'please wait just a moment,' and chugged the remainder of the can he had in his hand. Without skipping a beat, he then charged up his blade and swung into the grouping, only managed to strike half of them somehow. Even though the ones he had missed had a perfect opening to strike, it was one of the ones he had actually hit that managed to lunge in and swing a claw at him.

Bahr was surprised. It turned out that the Zombies had finally gotten fed up with being used as punching bags. This was as amusing to Bahr was it was frustrating. Even though he enjoyed a challenge, he had enjoyed the almost meditative experience of cutting down hordes of zombies without so much as the slightest hint of resistance. It offered its own unique flavor of catharsis, which Bahr had become too comfortable with.

So comfortable, in fact, that he had accidentally allowed one of the Zombies to land yet another attack on him. He wasn't too worried - after all, his MIT was higher right now than it had ever been before, and the Zombies didn't hit for very much anyways. Still, he could see how they might be a thread if he were to dawdle and let them get too many hits in. In accordance with this, he charged up his blade and cut through the grouping once more, managing to get a hit against all of them this time.

Then, he was struck again. Holy cow, these things really had it out for him now. While he had managed to avoid taking damage up until this point, it seemed that they were really out to get him. They probably had some sort of programming initiative that made them more hostile with the more of them that he killed. Made sense.

And it also made him smile.

It didn't matter how many of them there were. It didn't matter how tenacious they became. Bahr wasn't about to allow himself to get cut down by the likes of these weaklings. And what was more, he felt that familiar blood lust beginning to bubble up, deep down in his darkest core. It was a bittersweet feeling - he had been trying to leave this part of himself behind, but he couldn't deny that it felt really good.

So he poured that blood lust into his blade, lunging forward and smacking two of the zombies with the giant slab of metal he held in his hands. They combusted into blue clouds instantaneously.

Now all that remained was Bahr and the singular Zombie that had managed to evade him. He once against rested the blunt edge of his blade against his shoulder, his free hand placing itself firmly against his hip as he regarded the creature with a snide smirk. "Dunno what you're clinging to here, buddy. Hope? Do Zombies even have that? No, I think you're just too stupid to die. You can't possibly think you have a shot in hell of taking me on," he spat, grin growing wider and wilder with syllable he enunciated.

The Zombie didn't respond, because it was a Zombie. Well, it sort of grunted, but it was difficult to tell if this was a response of some sort or just what Zombies were meant to do. Perhaps a little of both? Or neither. Bahr wasn't a Zombie Whisperer, so it wasn't like he had a chance of figuring it out. Not that it mattered anyway, this thing would be dead soon enough.

"Well, I guess it's time we put an end to this. What do you say? Ready to meet your maker?" As if he was going to wait for a response. Milliseconds later, Bahr had closed the distance between them and unleashed a flurry of surprisingly rapid slashes into the Zombie, chopping it into bits. All of the pieces that fell from the husk immediately burst into azure confetti, which them dissipated into nothingness. Nothing like a good slice and dice to end a mediocre standoff.

And what of the others in the arena? Still hacking and slashing, it seemed. The edges of Bahr's lips curled upward into a crooked grin, teeth like fangs slipping out from between the pink flesh as it slowly separated. He could feel it. The roiling power of controlled rage bubbling up, surging through his veins and moving his body for him. But at a time like now, he had to take a step back and wait.

Even if he was raring to go, Bahr knew better than to jump headlong into a horde of mobs without first allowing his energy to recover, and ensure that his HP was up to the task. It wasn't like he had taken a lot of damage int hat last exchange, but it was certainly more than he was bargaining for. If he was going to sustain through the remainder of the fight, he was going to need to keep his wits about him and his HP high. To press on unprepared was a fool's errand, and a mistake he had learned from in the past.

As such, he cracked open one of the Diet Sodas he had acquired from the concession stand and consumed the liquid quickly, allowing its regenerative effects to fill his body with the sensation of healing that it offered. As usual, it tasted absolutely horrible - but Bahr had been expecting this. The last drink he had swallowed hadn't tasted all that great, and he had never liked diet soda to begin with.

But dang, did it work. Bahr couldn't remember the last time he had used a consumable with such potent healing properties. In fact, he didn't think that he had ever ingested something that healed him up so quickly.

Come to think of it, the last time he had used an HP recovery item was one of his leftover Beginner Potions. A Beginner Potion! That was all he had ever taken to heal himself up. He had always just relied on natural healing instead of using items to do the trick. There was a multitude of reasons for this, namely that there was a low supply in Aincrad, he didn't want to spend the money, and he had too much pride anyways. One of these days he was going to have to go to Kit and get her to whip up some premium health restoration potions for him so he could go on a real hunt. Probably throw in a few damage potions as well, just to make sure that he had everything he needed to truly kick mob ass.

For now, though, he had everything that he needed to get back to work. His HP was mostly replenished, his energy was fully restored, and there was a fresh batch of mobs just ready to get their butts kicked. And so he crept up on them, sword beginning to illuminate with a crimson hue, and lashed out with an attack that actually managed to hit all four at the same time. It was a miracle. Looking back, Bahr couldn't remember the last time he actually landed a hit on four mobs all at the same time. Something weird always happened that would leave one or more unscathed.

But boy, they were mad. They all came at him at the same time, and he dodged the only way he could think to at the time - with the legendary face slide. He dove to the ground, losing his handling almost immediately, and slid across the floor for an impressive distance on his face.

"Hey buddy!" a familiar voice called out as Bahr skidded across the floor on his face. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see an azure blur, and he recognized it as his own work. Ah, it was the Librarium Overcoat, the work that Bahr had given to Oscar when they first met. As Bahr slid across the floor past his friend, he simply raised an arm and gave the man a thumbs up. Hard to talk with a face full of concrete, after all.

It didn't take long for Bahr to recoup and make his way back over to the mobs that he had so brilliantly dodged just moments before. But on his way back, he saw what he could have sworn was Oscar grabbing a Zombie by the ankles and flinging it around like a giant club. Bahr wished that he could have stopped to watch, but he didn't have the time. With one swift motion, he attempted to carve into the grouping of zombies once more.

This batch in particular was filled with stubborn ones. For one reason or another, they just didn't want to die. Well, most things didn't want to die. But Zombies were, well, already dead. Wouldn't getting killed again just be like going back to sleep for them? That's what Bahr had gotten from his encounter with the first batch, the ones that had laughed at him. Perhaps he was just reading too much into things, as usual.

When he swiped his blade again, one of the Zombie nimbly avoided the strike with surprising agility, retaliating immediately and scoring a direct hit against Bahr. Luckily, the other Zombie had taken the full brunt of his attack, and shattered into blue glass that scattered throughout the tent before dissipating into oblivion. The one that remained hung on by only a sliver of HP, and Bahr was confident that he could eliminate it with his next attack.
