[EVENT - F01] They Like You For Your Brains, Not Your Body

Recommended Posts

It was time for this Zombie to meet its maker - it had taunted Bahr long enough. With how low its HP was, Bahr wouldn't even need to use a Sword Art to take it down. And so, without even putting any energy into the blade, he lifted it from his shoulder and swiped at the zombie, the giant slab of metal cleaving through the air and directly into the Zombie. A direct hit. There was no way that it could have survived.

And yet, it still stood. Health bar unmoving. It cackled at his attempts to slay it, much the same breathy chuckling that the first grouping of Zombies had given him when he attempted to cut them down. Just what the hell was going on here?

"That's, uh... Different," he remarked as he looked into the ghoulish eyes of his adversary. They stared back at him, hollow and empty, setting his teeth on edge as he thought about what to do next.

Well, if at first you don't succeed, you're supposed to try again. And so Bahr did. He heaved the gigantic sword forward, which felt a lot heavier than usual without the energy of an actual Sword Art behind it, and cleaved it through the Zombie once more. Much to his delight, this time the creature was actually snapped in twain as it should have been the first time, each of the halves smashing like blue glass against the backdrop of reality.

At long last, it seemed like his struggle was over. Well, not really. He still had dozens more to slay. But that wasn't a problem - the more he killed, the more revved up he became. So long as he didn't run into any more zombies that slowed his progress by... well, simply not dying when they were supposed to, he could ride this momentum through as many of the ghouls as he needed to to bring this cursed event to a close.

Speaking of momentum, it would be wasteful to quit now. But Bahr knew that if he ran into the next group before he was ready, calamity would await. So it was time to once again reach into his reserve of consumables and force down a few of those horrid energy drinks that he had suffered through before. They may not have been all that great in the taste department, and their effects were marginal at best, but they did the trick in a pinch and allowed him to quickly put himself back into the fight.

And so he opened up his menu, navigated to his inventory, and produced two more of the cans of disgusting liquid. Cracking them both open and pinching his nose shut, he downed the Offbrand Energy Drinks as quickly as his body would allow, one after the other. Instantly he felt more energized, but it came at a cost. He dry heaved for a moment, throwing the cans on the ground where they shattered into countless blue polygonal fractals.

After shaking his head and clearing his throat, he set his sights on another grouping of Zombies not far from him. Despite the fact that ehy were constantly flooding into the ten, it seemed that Bahr and the rest of those who had chosen to stay were doing a decent enough job of holding them back. At the very least, the volume of Zombies within the tent didn't seem to be growing at all.

He charged his blade up once more, charging in and ripping it through the horde of Zombies. In his typical unlucky fashion, he somehow only managed to hit three. The fourth managed to avoid taking any damage, this time. The good news was that, out of the three that he had hit, one of them had decided it had had enough and burst into a blue polygonal mist. The bad news, however, was the fact that one of the Zombies that had survived decided to lash out, its claws drawing a gash against Bahr's bicep.

That was fine. Bahr could handle a little bit of damage when it really came down to it. It wasn't like he didn't have consumables that could replenish it, anyways. And as it so turned out, his passive healing between fights was pretty decent in its own right. After this wave, he would eat one consumable and let his out of combat healing handle the rest of it. He'd be ready to go again in no time.

Not that he wasn't right now, that was. He charged up his blade once more and dove back into the horde, managing to strike all three of the remaining zombies in one fell swoop. While one of the Zombies crumbled into blue pixels instantly, another managed to cling to life with a sliver of HP. Right as it reached out to scratch Bahr, it too disintegrated once the Bleed it had been afflicted with sucked away the remainder of its HP. It seemed that that was the secret to bypassing their apparently passive ability.

That was good to know - for future reference. He could just have to focus on getting critical hits from now on. Because it was just that easy. Not.

Whatever. It didn't seem like they managed to cling to life every time he would ordinarily kill one. In fact, it didn't seem to happy very often at all. That was reassuring, at the least. Maybe, if he got lucky, he could get a crit about as often as they clung to their measly sliver of HP and eradicate them at a fast rate. His momentum was strong as it was now, so if nothing else, his tenacity would hopefully be enough to bring them down.

He stared into the hollow eyes of his singular remaining opponent, and it stared back at him. And then they sort of just... stood there. Both unmoving. Was it a battle of wills? Was it mind games? Not really. Bahr was just waiting for the right moment to strike, and the Zombie was looking at his skull and imagining what his brains must have taste like.

A thought occurred to Bahr. What if he just turned his back to the Zombie? Would its urges finally get the better of it and compell it to attack what it would certainly perceive to be an easy target? He doubted it had the wherewithal to notice that it was an obvious trap. With a shrug, Bahr turned his back to the creature, whistling idly as he waited for the telltale signs that it was approaching from the rear. Sure enough, it didn't take long for him to hear the raspy breathing of the Zombie slowly growing nearer.

With his sword against his back, he pumped it full of energy and simply ripped the blade upward when he felt the timing was right. The signature noise of a mob bursting into countless blue fractals sounded behind him, signifying a successful mob destruction. With a grin, Bahr turned around and watched the shards dissipate into oblivion.

Nice. That was, what twenty Zombies down? Bahr wondered how the other participants in the event were doing. He didn't want to toot his own horn, but he had a feeling that there were likely few that were able to keep up with his Zombie slaying prowess. Though, that probably wasn't true. He was still only a mid level player, after all. He was probably just being arrogant about it. Or was it simply self confidence? The line between the two always seemed to thin to tell. Not like it mattered that much to someone like Bahr, anyways.

So what if he was a little bit full of himself? It wasn't a crime to have a bit of an ego - as much as some people tried to act like it was. If he really was that insufferable of a person to be around, certainly he wouldn't have made all of the friends in Aincrad that he had. He always carried with him the sense that actions spoke louder than words, and he did whatever he could to lead the life of a moral and virtuous person.

That being said, he was sure that there were probably people that didn't like him due to his over confident demeanor. Their loss. Bahr knew that he was a trustworthy and reliable person to have around, and resourceful at that. If people wanted to steer clear because sometimes he seemed a little full of himself, that was their problem. Bahr wasn't going to be missing them anymore than he missed people he hadn't ever formed a relationship with.

Speaking of relationships that had gone sour, he wondered how Kirbs was doing. He hadn't seen her since their last encounter - when he stepped in the path of what would have been a killing blow against Kityuisa. It wasn't that he was particularly thrilled about that encounter, the outcome, or what Kirbs was becoming. But... something was nagging at him. He couldn't help but feel at least a little worried about her. Who was to say that she wouldn't continue down this self destructive path?

Great, another horde of Zombies had entered the arena. While the other players focused on the Zombies that had already flooded the ten, Bahr decided he would be one of the ones that took care of the ones that were just starting to show up. If he could hold back the ones coming in while the others took care of the ones already in the tent, they could stabilize the situation and give themselves enough breathing room to formulate a plan. It seemed like they would need one, considering there didn't seem to be any end in sight for the mobs.

In accordance with his newfound plan, Bahr pumping his sword full of energy and dashed toward the horde, slicing into all four of them and depleting their health bars with ease. While one disintegrated instantly, the remaining three survived with an amount Bahr had become accustomed to seeing throughout this event.

Nice. Now all he had to do was actually hit all of them in his next attack, and pray that he didn't proc whatever ability it was that was allowing some of them to hang on. He charged up his blade once more, a yellowish hue illuminating the immediate area and a few crackles of electricity permeating the air, and swiped the blade into the horde with ease. To his delight, he managed to hit all three targets, and watched as two of them burst into shattered blue glass before his eyes.

But therein lied  the problem. There was still a single mob that had managed to hang on - a product of one of the most annoying passive abilities that Bahr had encountered so far in this game. He was in luck, though, and the Bleed that it had become afflicted with from Bahr's attack sapped away the remainder of its HP just as it was reaching out to sink its surprisingly sharp claws into Bahr's flesh.

As the Zombie shattered and dissipated into oblivion right before him, Bahr counted himself lucky. If he was remembering correctly, that was actually the first batch of Zombies that he had managed to slay in two shots like that. All of the waves before that had presented some sort of problem for him - whether it be a miss, them hanging on by a sliver of HP, or any other myriad of variables that seemed to be plaguing his combat experience a of late. Perhaps he was finally getting back into his groove.

With that last batch having been so easy to dispatch, Bahr felt like after downing one of those disgusting energy drinks, he would be able to take another easily. He opened his menu and navigated to his inventory, populating the last remaining Offbrand Energy Drink and gulping it down as quickly as his body would allow. Though this body was physically revolting against the liquid entering it, he managed to keep it down, and felt its effects immediately.

It was a good thing that he had chosen to slurp down one of those disgusting energy drinks as opposed to simply waiting around for his energy to recover, because the next batch of Zombie had already arrived. In fact, they had come so quickly that Bahr hadn't been expecting them, and only discovered that they were there once he felt the teeth of one of them sink into his shoulder. He shook the fiend off of him and swung his sword wildly, somehow missing it completely but striking the other three on the grouping. Two of them died instantly, while the third held on with the typical amount of HP.

Bahr was mortified. They had scratched him before, but this one was a bite. Did that mean that he was going to become on of them? No. No, that couldn't happen. No way. There was no way that he would ever allow himself to become one of those monsters.

A glance at his status panel showed nothing. It didn't seem like he had been afflicted with anything. But wasn't that how all zombie infections started!? One moment you felt fine, the next moment you felt sick, and before you knew it - BAM! Zombie mode. He shuddered at the thought of being reduced to a lifeless husk, shambling about the tent in search of its next brain meal only to be effortlessly cut down by one of the other players.

He had been so distracted by these thoughts that the same Zombie from before managed to bite him again. With a pitiful shriek, he slashed out once more, scoring a hit against both it and the other remaining Zombie that was already lunging toward him.

He took a few steps back, breathing becoming slightly ragged. He had never felt quite like this. Like impending death was right around the corner. It was probably all just in his head. Or was it?

He shook his head, trying to shake the thoughts away. He couldn't afford to get distracted with something like this. If he didn't keep his head in the game, all that would happen is that he would suffer even more damage. And if he had gotten lucky so far and hadn't been infected with some sort of Zombie virus, then the last thing he wanted to do was expose himself to the potential virus even more. After all, who was to say what could or couldn't happen? Truthfully, they knew absolutely nothing about this event, or the mobs that came along with it.

He'd had his back turned toward the Zombie while having these thoughts, but spun around and thwacked it away with Back Rush the second it got too close. To his dismay, it seemed that the creature had managed to hang on. It seemed he would need to put it thought just a little more abuse to put it down.

These stupid Zombies. Bahr hated them. The fact that they could hang on after a deadly strike, for no reason other than the fact that they were Zombies, was incredibly annoying. Never before had Bahr encountered an enemy with such a passive. It slowed his momentum, and before long the tent with be overcome with rotting husks if he kept getting stuck on one enemy at a time. There was only so much he could do if they refused to go down just because.

One of the advantages of an enemy only being at one HP, though, is the fact that you don't need to actually use a Sword Art to take it down. In accordance with this, Bahr simply flung his sword out in front of him, smacking it into the Zombie that had foolishly returned to him, knocking out the last sliver of health it had and scattering its contents like weightless shattered glass through the air.

As Bahr looked around, it seemed that things were beginning to stabilize a bit. There were definitely some that were having a more difficult time handling the Zombies than others, but it didn't seem that anyone was in immediate danger yet. Which was good, because Bahr barely had the energy he needed to prevent more Zombies from entering the arena. If he had to leave his post to go help someone else in need, not only would he be throwing himself in harm's way as well, but there would be nothing to keep the incoming mobs in check.

Speaking of, none had shown up for a minute or two. Also a good think. He was out of consumables that boosted his Energy, and he doubted that he had what it would take to clear another bunch at the moment unless everything went absolutely perfectly. Since only one batch of mobs had gone well so far, he wasn't going to get cocky and press his luck. He wasn't good to anybody if he wound up dead.

Speaking of, his health was still a bit low from the damage he had suffered from that last mob. No problem, he had purchased concessions for just such a thing. He opened his menu and navigated to the inventory panel, populated one of the Diet Sodas he had in his stock and cracking it open. As the aspartame infused liquid slid down the back of his throat, he felt his vitality beginning to return at a much more rapid pace than what was typical for him.

When the soda was finished, he tossed the can aside, where it disintegrated into a blue mist upon making contact with the ground. One of the great things about Aincrad was that it was actually completely impossible to litter - whatever was dropped to the ground would either disappear upon contact, or sit there for a day or two until its durability ran out and it disappeared on its own. Either way, nobody had to worry about running around and picking up trash, because it just took care of itself anyways.

DIET SODA CONSUMED (+120 HP)

And then the next batch of Zombies was upon him, coming out of seemingly nowhere and swiping out viciously with their claws. Having not seen them approaching, he had no choice but to suffer the damage as opposed to attempting to dodge. Had he tried to avoid the attack so flippantly, he was likely he would have lost his balance and ended up on the floor. From there, the rest would have been history. They would have torn him to shreds.

After eating the damage, he retaliated with a strike of his own, pouring energy into his blade and slashing into the group with all of the ferocity he could muster. One exploded into a mess of blue polygonal fractals, whereas the rest remained, staring Bahr down and delivering their signature sinister cackle. He felt his skin crawing as he took a step back and prepared himself for the next round of attacks.

Nah. He wasn't going to wait around for them to attack. What was he thinking? Where had his momentum gone? During times like this, he was supposed to be on the offensive, suppressing the enemy before they had the opportunity to mount a counterattack. It was a method that had worked for him countless times in the past. So why shake it up now? After all, if it wasn't broken, there really was not point in trying to fix it. No need to reinvent the wheel - it already turned.

Without another thought, Bahr poured yellow energy into his sword, the amber light emanating from the blade and the crackles of electricity it emitted casting themselves upon the immediate vicinity of the interior of the tent. Dashing forward with breakneck speed, he tore the blade through the collection of mobs, reducing the health of every last one of them to zero. Within seconds, they were nothing more than fractals of blue glass floating through the air.
