[EVENT/F01/SP] An Axe-ellent Time

Recommended Posts

After a brief rest period, Oscar was ready to rock. He took the time to devour a Funnel Cake to boost his damage and then hopped right into the fray. He began looking around, searching for the best place to apply pressure to the ever-encroaching swarm. Unable to decide, he decided to go repair the tightrope that he'd used earlier, just in case he needed to use it later. It was annoying to climb a ladder while carrying a rope with no slack to it, but eventually he managed to get to the top. Then, he fastened it to the platform and slid down the ladder. Readying his axe, Oscar approached the horde of undead again, this time deciding that he was just going to swing at the first group that got in his way. It was much easier to make a decision that way than trying to be tactical. This wasn't a time for tactics anyway. It was a time for raw, unmitigated ultraviolence.

Oscar swung hard into the first group of zombies. The head of his axe glowed with a fearsome red energy as he cleaved through the four closest undead to him. Three of them shattered like glass instantly. The fourth hung on, thanks purely to its whole invulnerability shtick. It tried to lash out at Oscar, but he smashed it across the jaw with the butt of his axe, sending it sprawling into another group. It slowly and jerkily clambered to its feet and turned to face Oscar. Oscar spun his axe around over his head and turned to face it as well. He grasped his axe tightly in both hands and made ready for the next round. But he wouldn't strike just yet. He wanted more zombies to group up near  the other one so he could cleave through a group in one mighty blow. The only way to make this efficient was to keep the zombies flowing into the kill zone.

More zombies clambered in around the first one, replenishing the group's numbers to a solid four. He swung his axe over his head, chopping one way and then the other. Then he brought his axe down for a mighty slam. Wind burst out from the point of impact, blasting the zombies with shrapnel from the ground. Two of them shattered like glass. The first zombie survived due to its invulnerability and another was missed entirely. Oscar shrugged and spun out of the way of their sluggish lunges. He readied his axe once more and circled the zombies. He had to keep his distance until another small group joined this one. Papa doesn't get out of bed for anything less than 4 targets and all that. Oscar smiled confidently and flipped his weapon in his hands. He was having much more fun with an axe compared to a katana. He felt like he was actually doing some damage now.

Zombies kept filing in and Oscar kept cleaving through them like butter. The head of his axe glowed with a deep red light as he swiped to and fro with his weapon. His third and final strike came down and dug straight into the dirt. Oscar's muscles tensed as he wrenched his weapon from the ground. The action caused chunks of stone and dirt to fly into the zombies and cause those that weren't invulnerable to shatter like glass. The zombies lurched forward, their hands grasping at his neck and chest. Oscar dipped to the right and smacked them both across the back of the head with the butt of his axe. The impact caused the zombies to stagger and fall to the ground. They slowly rose to their feet. Oscar was going to let more Zombies file in but, unfortunately, he was out of energy. He would need to dispatch these two before he could fight any more.

With no energy left, Oscar had to choke down a foul-tasting energy drink. It would have been no problem to do so if he could have plugged his nose. But holding an axe and trying to dodge zombies made it difficult. So he got the full brunt of the nasty drink. It was sickly sweet, like someone had cranked the saccharine up to 11. Not only that but it was hot. Not lukewarm. Hot. Imagine a cup of coffee that had just cooled down enough not to burn your mouth. To make matters worse, the heat had killed any sort of carbonation that there was in the drink. If he didn't need energy so badly, he would have thrown it away then and there. Honestly, the foul mixture brought a tear to his eye. But he choked it all down, dodging the zombies' sluggish attacks. It gave him just enough energy for another, low level AoE. With the zombies being stuck at 1 HP, it would be more than enough.

Two immortal zombies left. Their whole survival shtick was really getting under Oscar's skin. But, now he had a little energy in the tank. And with it, he could go for another AoE. Oscar smacked the butt of his axe against the ground. With the motion, a deep blue light erupted around the head of his axe. The grasped the weapon tightly in his hands and spun it around. As the head of the axe traveled upwards towards the zombies, Oscar put a little more "oomph" into the motion. The weapon whipped around and caught one of them under the chin, just barely missing the second. The one he hit shattered like glass. The other one surged forward, grasping at Oscar's form. He dodged out of the away and sighed. Why couldn't he hit anything? This one zombie was taunting him by continuing to exist. He sighed and and rested the butt of his axe against the ground.

It was annoying, really. Having just one adversary left that simply refused to die. Whether it be from Oscar suddenly being unable to hit the sluggish creature for whatever reason or its own innate invincibility. Oscar was beginning to grow increasingly frustrated with both himself and the situation that he had suddenly found himself in. Nevertheless, the only thing he could do was keep pushing. He let out a groan audible enough to be heard over the din of the ever-encroaching zombie horde as his swing just barely missed the zombie. Thankfully, he wasn't the only one who didn't seem to be able to hit anything right now. The zombie lurched forward, its hands grasping for Oscar's throat. It missed, of course. Thought that didn't really help Oscar's predicament too much, all things considered. He was still locked in combat, despite his best efforts to disengage so he could recuperate some energy.

Annoyed, Oscar swung again. This time, his axe bit deep into the Zombie's shoulder. It remained stuck there for a moment. Just long enough for Oscar to begin to wonder whether or not the zombie's invulnerability had activated yet again. But then, after several excruciating seconds, the cracks began to form on the undead creature's model. The cracks spiderwebbed across the zombie's form until, finally, it fractured and shattered into a thousand shards. Oscar wasted no time leaping straight up into the rafters again. He wasn't about to get himself caught up in another fight with no energy left. It was good timing because several zombies had taken notice of him and had tried to advance on his position. He moved a bit faster for them to be able to track so they stumbled around where he used to be confused for a moment. It was a touch humorous, if Oscar had been in any mood for humor at the moment.

And so Oscar sat there, kicking his feet off the edge of the wooden slat he was sitting upon. He didn't really watch anything in particular other than his energy bar. The rate it filled was agonizingly slow. It felt like an eternity before the first pip of energy was restored. Oscar began to let his mind wander. Once he had been able to see this low-stakes invasion of the undead for what it was, Oscar couldn't really bring himself to be extremely concerned about the goings-on down below. He began to hum a tune from a song that that been popular on the radio before he'd gotten himself trapped inside the game. He wondered how much music had changed in the outside world over the past two years. Probably not by much, he decided. It wasn't like music was evolving by leaps and bounds or anything. There might be a new popular artist or something, but they wouldn't be revolutionizing anything.

Oscar 640/640 HP | 7/64 EN | 18 DMG | 3 ACC | 3 EVA | 41 MIT

His thoughts drifted from songs to his plans for the weekend. It was coming up soon after all. So what was he going to do? Was it just going to be more of the same? Wander about aimlessly on a random floor with his familiar? He did that last weekend though. He wanted to do something a little different. A little more interesting. But what would fit the bill? Maybe he could go for a swim? Could he even swim in Aincrad? He made a mental note to check into that later. Hopefully the water wouldn't be a death plane and he would die immediately upon contact. The game couldn't possibly be that shoddily made, now could it? He sighed. There weren't any good ideas coming to mind right now. Perhaps he'd go another round with the zombies and decide what he wanted to do later. He hopped down from the rafters and readied his axe. That sounded like the best possible plan in this moment.

He swung his axe in a wide arc, carving through the zombies like a hot knife through butter. He sliced left and right, batting the zombies aside as if they were nothing but empty husks. He certainly enjoyed the way the two-handed battle axe felt in his hands. He like to hit things really hard and, while the katana was certainly good at doing that, it simply lacked the ability to deliver such devastating damage on a large scale. The battle axe on the other hand. Well it's rather difficult for the hordes of the undead to advance when a man is doing his best rendition of a blender right in front of them. Even when he was forced to dodge an attack, his onslaught wouldn't cease. He felt like a man possessed. He fought with strength he could never hope to have in the real world. And he wasn't a weak guy by any stretch of the imagination in the real world either.

The fundamental difference between the Oscar of Aincrad and the Oscar of the real world was that he didn't really get tired in Aincrad. Certainly bad things happened when he didn't get enough rest, but he had almost infinite stamina here. He could swing his massive axe like it was a mere feather with absolute impunity. Though he couldn't keep it up indefinitely, he would certainly be able to do it for all of his waking hours. Aincrad was good about mimicking stimuli, but not when it came to one's personal endurance. Speaking of stimuli, he certainly felt no small amount of pain when a prone zombie reached out and sank its teeth into his leg. He growled lowly and kicked the undead abomination hard in the teeth, shaking it loose in the process. He made a mental note to not get so caught up in the melee that he didn't pay attention to when things were actually dead.

And then it happened. The dream. Every single hit of his Explode Catapult landed against the enemies close enough to be hit by it as a critical. In the face of such explosive damage, the zombies staggered backwards. They seemed to glitch out for a moment before finally shattering in unison. Oscar took a passing glance at his Energy Bar and noticed that it had been completely depleted. So, he launched himself upward into the rafters once again to get away from the battle and recuperate. He placed his axe on the wooden slat next to him and slowly kicked his feet back and forth as he surveyed the fighting down below. He had certainly done some damage to the horde. There was a bit of a dip in their ranks. He'd managed to force them back more than a few feet. So much so that the shambling undead that attempted to close the gap were having a tough time of it. Maybe they could actually fight their way out of the tent before sunrise.

Oscar 571/640 HP | 1/64 EN | 18 DMG | 3 ACC | 3 EVA | 41 MIT

God this was boring. He almost wished that he could hack his own energy bar so that he didn't have to bore himself to tears every time he ran low on the only resource more important than his HP. But, it wasn't all bad. He had a comfortable piece of wood to stretch out on, a musty tent to exist in. The smell of stale popcorn down below was almost stifling up here. Someone didn't remove it from the heater and now it was burning. Oh well, nothing to really be done about it now. The zombies were kinda bigger issue when compared to burning popcorn. It wasn't as if it could actually catch the tent on fire or anything like it could in the real world. Wait. Could it? Was that the grand plan. Wait until halfway through the night and then light the tent on fire to add a little more chaos to the mix? Given the way this event was going, Oscar couldn't say he doubted it.

Oscar 611/640 HP | 2/64 EN | 18 DMG | 3 ACC | 3 EVA | 41 MIT

As his health and energy ticked back up, so to did Oscar's level of boredom. It would be nice if he could remain involved down below while still having his energy recover. But, alas, the game was really finnicky about what constituted "combat." If he entered combat now, he would have to wait even longer for his energy to recover, something he very much did not want to have to deal with for any longer than he had to. So, begrudgingly, Oscar's butt stayed planted on the support strut as he watched the zombies shamble forward towards the rest of the players in the middle. Thankfully, it wouldn't be long now before Oscar was back in fighting form. Then he could go back down and slay zombies willy-nilly until his energy inevitably bottomed out again. He didn't want to think about that. The sheer level of boredom he was experiencing did not lend well to anticipating additional boredom.

Oscar leapt from his perch and landed amidst the undead once more. Their sluggish reaction times gave Oscar plenty of quarter to begin carving through their ranks like a hot knife through butter. Undead were blasted to and fro as Oscar performed his best rendition of a blender. Though they were sent flying by his attacks, most of them didn't suffer much damage. The game had this thing where it would only lock you in combat with four things at a time. Therefore, you could only damage four things at a time. It wouldn't be a huge issue if two of the zombies he was fighting had not suddenly decided they didn't want to die and activated their invulnerability skill. So there they were, stuck at 1 HP, trying in vain to attack the nimble, Axe-wielding man that had just sent so many of their peers flying. Truly, these things were more annoying than they were dangerous.

Oscar continued his assault, the head of his axe flying in all directions. The blade of the weapon glowed with a fierce red light as Explode Catapult destroyed three zombies in one fell swoop. The one that survived, however, managed to get in close enough to scratch Oscar across the chest with its nasty claws. Upon receiving the blow, Oscar danced backwards. Best to get away from any other grabby hands before he got himself into some real trouble. He spun his axe round in his hands and squared off against the surviving Zombie. He let out a low growl, becoming more and more irritated with their invulnerability powers by the second. He didn't even have enough energy left in the tank for another Explode Catapult. So he was stuck basic attacking this one jerk until he could disengage, yet again, so his energy could recover. Fun times, for sure.

Oscar wasted no time rushing forward and bopping the zombie in the face with the butt of his axe. The zombie staggered backwards and then began to splinter. Cracks spiderwebbed across its form. With its health bar having reach zero, the cracks continued to form until the creature, eventually, shattered. Oscar sighed and shouldered his axe. Instead of heading for the rafters again, he decided he wanted to make a stop by the concession stand and get a snack. Most of the food had been sitting out most of the night so it probably wasn't of the highest quality. But not everything could be one of Oscar's hot dogs. Approaching the pile of greasy victuals, Oscar slung his axe across his back and began to search for the least revolting things within the mass of the food. Basically, the things that would keep throughout the night without going completely bad.

And that's when he found it. A chorus of angels seemed to fill the air as his eyes fell upon the thing he never thought to have seen here. One, lone hot dog sat towards the back of the table of food. It taunted him relentlessly. There was no safe way to grab the hot dog without sending the rest of the mound of food toppling to the ground. On the one hand, there was a hot dog ripe for the taking. On the other hand, he would waste all of this food trying to get to it. It wasn't a very hard decision to make. With one swing of his mighty axe, Oscar swept the table clean of the mound of food. With the way clear, Oscar reached forward and took hold of his destiny. His destiny, of course, being a room-temperature hot dog that had been sitting out all night. But not everyone could have amazing destinies and Oscar was content with his. He opened his mouth and took a bite of the delicious meat cylinder.

The taste was almost enough to send Oscar reeling, and not in a good way. He didn't know who exactly they had placed in charge of the preparation of the hot dogs, but they definitely needed to be strung up by their toes and beaten senseless until they suddenly learned how cooking worked. He spit the foul-tasting wiener out of his mouth and threw the rest of the hot dog on the ground. His destiny certainly tasted disappointing. He needed something to distract him from the rank taste in his mouth. Slaughtering hordes of undead seemed like the perfect way to go about doing such a thing. He'd need to wait just a bit longer for his energy to regenerate. He almost considered downing one of the diet sodas, but they wouldn't really make matters any better. The diet soda actually tasted worse than this pitiful excuse for a hot dog.
