[EVENT-F1] Give Me My Sticker

Admittedly, Pinball wasn't a really big fan of game-wide events. He was more of a stick in the mud, if you will. He did, however, show up at this one; something that he wouldn't have expected for himself, as he was sure other people wouldn't have expected either. Pinball's feet carried him here and there with no real end goal in mind, trying to find a way out but ultimately coming across none. Which was unfortunate, to say the least. The concession stand, as crowded as it seemed to be, had a list of possible achievements to complete - each achievement would yield a point, and each point could then be cashed in for some type of reward. Pinball had already picked up the free sword - thanks, guys - and after that, he'd sort of been just itching to leave. But if there was nothing that would let him out, he guessed fighting a couple of zombies couldn't hurt.

As he slowed to a stop and turned around, Pinball was - more or less - delighted to see a squad of animated, shambling corpses ripe for the picking! With their flesh all gorey and loose, slimy giblets of skin dripping from their skin like rotten fruit, Pinball was at least ninety percent sure that these were the zombies that everyone had been tasked with killing - at least, before they'd been swept off to fight the Event Boss or whatever. Pinball wasn't really paying attention to that. Drawing his new sword, Pinball tossed his coat to the side. Evasion was something that he didn't want, if he was going to get the easiest achievements he needed to. And with the coat equipped, dodging would be so easy that the zombies would miss him even if he wasn't trying. That was just how the game's mechanics worked. Fortunately for them, Pinball was aiming to make this as easy as possible.

As the fight wore on, Pinball began to descend into a dance of fire, poison, flesh, and blood. Or, well, whatever passed as blood in Sword Art Online. It wasn't really an effect that you see a lot of, save for the name of the Bleed Status Effect. Otherwise, SAO was usually pretty PG-13. Or, if you explored a little bit too much of the settings, you could, er... find toggleable settings that were a bit more saucy. Regardless, that knowledge wouldn't help him now. Pinball wasn't playing with his sword, after all. He was fighting with a sword! And that, friends, is usually a lot more dangerous. He hadn't noticed the first strike a zombie had scored across his shoulder, but he did realize he'd just been clawed across his face. Backpedaling, Pinball put both hands on the handle of his sword, gritting his teeth.  But Pinball hit just as hard, if not harder. He'd opted to use his sword over his spear for... some reason he couldn't quite remember. Maybe it was because he wanted to keep up appearances? The One-Handed Straight Sword set him apart from other people, and it was a far cry from the spear. But he was known for using both. So why did he think it was an optimal disguise? Maybe it was just the illusion of safety that appealed to him. Maybe he really didn't care. Maybe a part of him even wanted to be found out. Or maybe, and this was probably the right guess, he was just tired of trying, and didn't quite care what happened to him or what didn't. All he knew is that right now, he wanted to fight these zombies. And that right now, he wanted whatever a Halloween Sticker was. It was around this time that Pinball got it in his head to try out his new Sneak Attack. Recently, his skill mod for Hiding had been replaced: Assassin had been swapped out for Trickster, which, instead of dealing increased damage, applied all of the status effects on a weapon at the cost of raw power. Which was good, considering the fact that Jack's Hellfire had two of them. Pinball took a step forward, and then suddenly reered back as one of the three remaining zombies lashed out at him. As he did, Zomekko's shadow overtook him, enveloping him in a shroud of darkness that was quickly and promptly scattered, leaving no trace of the boy behind. At least, from the perspective of the zombies. In reality, Pinball was still among them - they just couldn't see him. Pinball took a moment to take a breath, lining up the perfect shot.

It was when he threw himself into action that things finally took a turn for the worst. Pinball had never paid attention to his health; at first, out of recklessness. Later on, it became unnecessary. His health pool had become so large that he didn't have to worry much about his defenses, when he killed his enemies before they hurt him, more often than not. Now was not the case. Especially not when the mobs hit this hard, and they were in a horde. As Pinball spun around, applying his status effects successfully to each zombie, he took an attack or two, he couldn't tell. But it was the accumulation of that damage that shocked him. Glancing up to his health bar, Pinball was absolutely horrified to see how low it'd gotten. Things had just happened that hadn't happened for what felt like years. Pinball shuddered, staggering backwards. The stakes had just been raised dramatically.

He actually might die here. The realization set in right as the adrenaline did, pumping fear and anxiety through his veins. He started to shake; not violently, and not enough to disrupt the rhythm of his movements, but enough to where it was noticeable. Panic gripped him by the stomach, icy hot stabs of horror piercing his chest. 

The zombies suddenly looked a lot less comical and a lot more terrifying.

They all lunged for him at once, and Pinball reacted violently. One went low - lower than Pinball had been expecting - and his swipe went wide, sending an arc of crimson energy rocketing away. It took hold of his leg and bit into his calf. Pinball watched his health drop, his heart racing.

Then the second came. Its claws held out, aiming for his throat; Pinball was looking death in the face.

But wouldn't death - that peaceful release - actually be kind of... nice? No more fear, no more worrying. No more stress. No more sleepless nights. 

The image of someone Pinball owed an apology came to the forefront of his vision, and his blade cut through the zombie's neck, separating its head clean from its body.

Remember what you're fighting for. It's not for himself. Dying here - to mobs like this - would be nothing short of embarrassing. Pinball reared back, sending a boot flying into the zombie's face. He could have sworn he heard a crack. Taking a step back for a moment and gathering his bearings, Pinball placed a shaky grip on his sword. 

Hadn't he bought items that would heal him for one of those achievements? Pinball swiped open his inventory in a flash, scrolling through the numerous items he'd acquired over his years in the game. Most consumables, if not all of them, were crossed out with a big red "X". Was that some sort of Room Effect, maybe?

Luckily, the sodas weren't. Pinball popped open a can and pounded it like his name was Kyle, crushing the soda and tossing it aside when he was done with it. It would hit the ground and disintegrate, leaving Pinball to face the steadily recovering zombie.

And play it safe. Just because he'd given himself a second to breathe, didn't mean he was out of hot water yet. Pinball, shaky and maybe a little bit delirious, watched his health slowly crawl up bit by bit in sparing glances. Most of his focus was still on the zombie in front of him, as it should be.

As the zombie stood to its full height and began to shamble forward, its flesh hanging loose like soggy bandages, Pinball took one step back and vanished. Like walking through a portal, Zomekko's shadow consumed him and then blinked out of existence. 

The zombie was none the wiser, and slowed to a stop, standing there like it hadn't even been hunting him to begin with. 

Pinball breathed in. He took a second to level his sword. The color in his blade refracted what light was in the tent, causing the weapon to dance and shimmer like fire in the moonlight.

An explosion of color and light, juxtaposed by the thick black fog Zomekko seemed to be made up of. Pinball burst into existence, carving a wicked line across the remaining zombie's chest from its shoulder to its waist. In what was probably a super anime moment, Pinball ended up behind the monster, his blade crackling with a deep red energy. His mouth twisted in a snarl, his posture leaning forward and slouched, Pinball was temporarily frozen in place by his sword art's delay. 

The walking corpse burst into flame, flesh smoldering as black veins crept across its body, poison seeping into its system. Pinball turned, watching the unholy creature's health drop and then drop some more. Into a deep red, to Pinball's dismay, it came to a halt just before its HP value hit zero. 

"Damn it," Pinball growled, spinning around to have his body face his foe. How was it still standing, after that? What kind of power was that?

He'd seen it before, hadn't he? In the flurry of fire, sword, and claw, he hadn't noticed. But thinking back on it, he could have sworn he'd attacked a zombie on its last legs, only for it to remain standing when by all rights it should have died. 

Whatever, it didn't matter.

The zombie moved forward, and Pinball unleashed one last bolt of energy, cutting the blast of crimson into the very air and sending it forward... only for it to pass right through the monster. 

Before the explosion of force found its target, the zombie finally crumbled under its own weight, destroyed by the Damage over Time effects he'd applied just a few seconds prior. 

It hit the ground in a mushy mound of flesh and bone, and slowly began to disintegrate. Pinball watched, and sheathed his sword. 

And then Pinball shuffled off into the darkness, not unlike the walking dead he'd just finished fighting.

"...you're kidding." 

It had slipped his mind completely. He'd only completed two achievements - he still needed to use eleven consumables. 

And, conveniently, he had just that very amount of sodas left in his inventory. 

Pinball frowned deeply, opening his inventory and materializing the sodas he needed. 

All eleven of them. He placed them in a circle around him and then sat in the middle, like he was trying to protect himself from Sea Bears. 

Here goes nothing. 

The first second wasn't that bad. It went down easy, and though he wasn't a big fan of the taste - let alone the nasty aftertaste - it wasn't that bad. 

By the third, he was starting to feel gross. He rubbed his cheeks. The inside of his mouth felt tingly, like the disgusting fizz had stuck to his gums. 

By the fifth soda, Pinball was seriously questioning his life decisions. He had to choke it down, now, and he was VERY unhappy with the amount of sodas he had left. 

The eighth was when he started considering to tap out. He sniffed loudly, fighting back the tears that sprang up in the corners of his eyes. 

By the last soda, he was practically crying. "I'm gonna puke," he whimpered to nobody in particular, struggling not to burp loudly. Tears ran down his face in steady streams. He wiped digital snot off his nose with his sleeve. 

And then he got his points.
