It had been a pretty uneventful day for Oscar. He'd gone ahead and got his daily errands done early. He regretted that immensely because now it was barely noon and he was out of things to do! He could always go and manage his shop for the rest of the day. He was sure his regulars would appreciate that but at the same time, he knew that he needed to keep his stores of materials built up or else he wouldn't be cooking anything for anyone. So, he found himself up on Floor 9. The last time he had been here was when he took on the Cerberus with Cordelia. Why would anyone in their right mind come here of all places? The heat was sweltering, even moreso than on Floor 5. Oscar sat down on a bench in Yōgan Village just so he could take some time to acclimate to the heat. Sweat dripped from his face as he drank down some water in an effort to cool himself off. Of course, wearing so many layers in such heat made the whole goal of "cooling down" impossible. It might have been the heat addling his brain, but he was beginning to weigh the benefits of grinding mobs out here in his underwear.

"Level twenty, my ass."

Lilik stomped her way off the teleporter and into the gray, smoggy hell that was the ninth floor. It was abysmally hot, and the air was sick enough that it could be cut with the proverbial knife. Lava bubbled and belched not far from where she walked, but the woman hardly noticed. Long legs carried her thin frame, which was held rigid with furious anger and unbending determination. Who cares if the quest had recommended she be level twenty? That was probably a suggestion for idiotic noobies who had no idea what they were doing. And sure, okay, she had never actually fought anything before. But she was no idiot, and she was far, far, from helpless. She had a weapon, she had a quest, and she was going to get stronger if it killed her.

With that thought, her voice of reason, a mere whisper in the back of her mind, finally reached her. You really could die, it reminded her. Grit could only get her so far. It was like trying to outrun a sports car in a race. Sure, she could want it, and even try her hardest. But without the right equipment, she would fail.

Lilik would not fail.

Water. That was as good a place to start, as the floor's heat finally registered. Tiny beads of sweat had broken out on her flushed skin, and her breathing was just a bit labored. Her violent red eyes swept her surroundings, and fortunately, landed on a man with just what she needed. She strode over, stopped before him, and put her hands on her hips.

"Where did you get the water?" she asked, by way of greeting.

"Christ," Oscar gasped. He tugged in vain at his collar in an attempt to get just a little heat escape. Why in the hell was he dressed for winter in on the volcano floor? He'd definitely have to get Bahr to make him some lighter clothes. Wait a second. HE could make himself some lighter clothes. Vanity items were a thing and it didn't matter at all that he was a Cook and not a Tailor. His fingers hovered over the interface for a brief moment but the he realized that his Evasion was tied to his coat. The very thing making him want to die was also the very thing keeping him alive. This development was quite vexing. He couldn't very well get his grind on naked. Just as he closed the menu and started to take another sip of water, a voice cut through the air.

"Where did you get the water?"

Oscar peered over the top of his canteen and stared straight at the young lady who had planted herself in his field of view. He sized her up, his eyes passing up and down her slender frame. He took a long drink and handed the canteen off to the woman without a word. He leaned his head back and groaned loudly in discomfort, prompting Leeroy & Jenkins to turn both their heads towards their master. He exhaled heavily and patted the Cerberus on his... heads. Finally, he turned his attention back to the admittedly-attractive woman who was currently in possession of the rest of his water.

"Brought it from home. And I think the word you were looking for was 'Hi.'" He was mostly teasing, but the heat had sapped all the life from his voice. He wouldn't be surprised if it came across differently than intended. Of course, he was too hot to care. He cleared his throat and shoved his hands in his pockets. He was honestly considering heading out, but it would be rude to just dip when someone was speaking to him. Rude though she might have been, Oscar wasn't about to be rude back. It just wasn't in his nature. So, he mustered up the energy to give her a wide smile and offer a hand to the strange woman. "I'm Oscar. And you are?"

"And I think the word you were looking for was 'Hi.'"

Lilik took a deep gulp of the canteen, eyeing the man over it's base. The temptation was there to drain the thing before handing it back, especially after he'd copped that attitude. But few players would be willing to share, so maybe she could give him a pass. This once.

After swallowing, she returned the container to it's original owner. He looked as miserable as she felt, sweat slicked clumps of blonde hair clinging to his flushed face. Why in the world was he wearing such a hefty overcoat? Wasn't he roasting in there? Sure, her beginner gear wasn't pretty, but at least it didn't cook her while she wore it. She surveyed him a moment longer, and when he extended his hand, she eyed it warily. "Lilik," she finally answered, grasping his damp hand with her own and giving it a firm shake. Her gaze turned to Leeroy & Jenkins. "What the hell is that thing?"

"What the hell is that thing?"

Well the girl - Lilik - certainly didn't waste any time. Given his current predicament, he appreciated the brevity. "Leeroy and Jenkins. My dopey cerberus." Once he said that, realization came upon him. Their mommy had its lair on this floor. That thought alone was enough to energize him. He leaned down to his hound, scratching both heads behind their ears. "Would you guys like to go see mommy," he cooed. At the merest mention of their mother, both heads of his cerberus began to growl lowly. For you see, they had not parted on the best of terms.  Lilik, at this point, was probably as confused as he was miserable. "Some context," he began without looking up from petting his familiar. "Leeroy and Jenkins were tamed on this floor. They had been programmed to be at odds with the rest of their litter, which makes them just the tinyest bit irate when I mention the boss that 'birthed' them. It's quite the interesting interaction."

His hound calmed, Oscar leaned back in his seat and took a small sip of water before tossing the canteen back to Lilik. It wasn't as if it had been particularly expensive or annoying to acquire. It merely quenched the sensation of thirst, which he was sure the abrasive young woman could appreciate. His eyes flicked up and down her frame until her nameplate popped up as a result of his examination. An interface unique to him, he quickly scanned over the information. She was level 1. At that moment, Oscar let out a heavy sigh. Oh boy.

Rather than berate her for the foolishness of venturing so high up at such a low level, Oscar rose from his seat and slung his weapon over his back. "Alright, what quest are we doing? Monsters here do literally double your health in damage. Let's go get this done so you don't get yourself killed."
