When Bahr had caught wind of a pirate quest, he was immediately onboard - pun fully intended. All he'd needed to do was find the frantic sailor on the sixteenth floor and hop aboard his uncle's row boat. And why a row boat? It was terribly impractical to row over miles of ocean, and Bahr could feel it. It took forever, and the calm lapping of the water against the hull of the boat threatened to lull him to sleep more than once. If not for his excitement at the prospect of fighting a bunch of pirates, he likely would have.

When they finally reached the cove's shore, his excitement had reached its maximum.

"You be careful, now," the old man warned, but Bahr paid him no mind and sauntered into the cove. He had already heard the spiel before. "These guys are tough, watch out!" As if, he wasn't scared. He had this in the bag.

It wasn't long before Bahr found his first victim. Looked like a simple deckhand, nobody important. Bahr could have taken him out while he wasn't looking, but he wanted the full pirate experience. So he boldly strode before the man, Dracbane drawn. The deckhand rose to his feet and slowly drew his curved sword from its scabbard. The two eyeballed one another before Bahr gestured, and invitation for the man to say something.

"Avast, scallywag!" was the man's retort.

"That's what I'm talking about!" Bahr exclaimed as the edges of his lips curled upward into a wry grin. Without another word, he dashed forward, sinking Dracbane into the man's should before kicking him away. He fell through the table he had been sitting at with a pained groan, and Bahr sized up his next attack. Some were of the opinion that it was in poor taste to hit a man while he was down, but Bahr had never been one of these people. Not with mobs, anyways.

When Bahr slowly strode forward toward his opponent, the fear grew in the man's eyes. He knew the end was coming. And Bahr knew he would be the one to deliver it. It felt a bit twisted, approaching something so human-like with the intent to kill. But Bahr knew that it was merely data. Did the deckhand have the advantage of knowing this as well? And even if he did, would the thought bring him peace? Clearly he seemed to have the capacity for fear.

"Don't worry," Bahr said as he lifted his sword high into the air. "You'll be back soon." The deckhand witnessed the sword fall, and then nothing.

As the pixels evaporated, Bahr looked further into the cavern. It appeared as though there were two paths he could take. His instincts told him to go right, and his gut was rarely wrong. So he went left instead. He wanted to get the entire experience, not the shortest.

Even though he knew he was on a quest, Bahr was brimming with enthusiasm. Ever since he had watched Pirates of the Caribbean as a young boy, he had dreamed of experiencing something like this. He felt as though he was preparing to square off against Captain Barbosa himself. Bahr understood he was nowhere near as suave as Jack Sparrow, but a part of him had always felt as though they shared the same energy. But this wasn't Jack's story, it was his. And he would tell it in his image.

And really, all that meant was relentlessly kicking pirate ass until either they were all dead, or he was satisfied.

Either way, it was sure to be a good show, and Bahr couldn't wait to get a bit deeper into it. He wondered if this was something any of his friends would enjoy? He did feel a bit selfish for keeping it all to himself. But from what Conciliator had told him, this one could turn out to be a bit of a doozy. And he didn't want to potentially put anyone else in harm's way.

It was probably a silly thought. Putting someone else in harm's way. It wasn't like Bahr was the most powerful player out there - there were loads who were stronger than him. And he recognized that none of his friends were exactly pushovers, either. Still, it was this mindset that had almost gotten someone killed once before. Who was to say it wouldn't happen again if he wasn't careful? Nobody. And if it did, he'd hardly be able to live with himself over it. To make that mistake once was something he might be able to get over eventually. But to do it again? Inexcusable.

Nah. He'd feel it out first, tell them about it, and if any were interested he would bring them along for his second attempt. That was the best plan of action. And if things got bad for him, well... They wouldn't get bad. It had been ages since Bahr's last brush with death, and he wasn't intending to have another here in this dank cave.

When he reached the next chamber, they were waiting for him. Two deckhands, indistinguishable from one another and the deckhand he had just slaughtered moments before. Standing behind them was someone else, a bit more unique looking. After sizing him up, it looked like he probably had better stats, too. Perfect.

As Bahr dashed forward, the two deckhands rushed forward as well. Bahr slashed in a wide arc, attempting to cleave into both of them, but only managed to strike one as the other jumped back to evade. While Bahr was happy with the hit, the deckhand hardly flinched, pressing forward and jamming his curved sword between Bahr's ribs. As Bahr struggled to get any air intake, the other deckhand swooped in and jammed the pommel of his sword into Bahr's forehead, sending him tumbling backward.

How embarrassing. To think that he could get taken advantage of so easily by what seemed like easy mobs.

It seemed that Bahr had drastically underestimated the strength of his foes. To think that they would have a stun mechanic. That was something that he hadn't seen coming.

It wore off just in time for him to spring out of the way of the attacks of the incoming deckhands. He weaved through them like a snake through the grass, setting his sights on Amir. What he hadn't expected was Amir to suddenly choose now to spring into attack. Bahr barely managed to bring up his sword in time to block the larger pirate's attack, backing up and looking behind him. The deckhands were closing in from the rear now, and he needed to think fast.

When all else fails, go Legend of Zelda. Bahr's sword flashed to light with a crimson glow and it let it rip, spinning in a circle as all three of the mobs approached him from every angle. One by one, they all ate their chunk of damage, the first one bursting into a cloud of pixels. As it did, its life essence, characterized by tiny scarlet orbs, flew toward Bahr and were absorbed by his body. He breathed a breath of fresh air as his health was restored and he was reinvigorated.

This was short lived, however, as one of the deckhands was quick to retaliate. It sank its sword into Bahr's ribs just as it had done before, but rather than being stunned this time, Bahr simply craned his head to look the man in the eye. He seemed genuinely surprised.

"Oh, come on," Bahr chided as he rolled his eyes. "As a stun user, you should know. You can't just pull something like that every attack. There's a cooldown attached to the target."

Bahr kicked the helpless deckhand away from him and into Amir, charging up his blade once more. As the pair of pirates stumbled onto the ground, Bahr approached, raising his sword high above his head. He swept it across both of their frames, reducing Amir's health gauge to dangerously low levels while the other one was reduced to polygonal blue ash. There was a frightful look in Amir's eyes as he watched his life essence leave his body through his fresh wound and be absorbed into Bahr's replenishing his health gauge to full once more.

"You... What the hell are you!?" the man cried out as he scuttled backward on the ground, trying to put some distance between himself and Bahr, to no avail. Bahr only smirked.

"The Crimson Marauder."

God, it felt good to use that moniker rather than 'Bloodedge.' There was a good ring to it. Something that felt right. It was probably a bit self indulgent, but who cared. He was the only real person there.

Enough chatter. Bahr raised his sword about his head once more, its blade gleaming with the light from the torches lining the wall before it caught a glow of its own.

"Wait!" the man shouted, throwing up his hands in a defensive posture.

"What is it?" Bahr demanded, his sword beginning to vibrate with hunger. It was eager to feed.

"I... I don't want to die..." came the pitiful response. He looked like a toddler about to get grounded by his parents, eyes wide as dinner plates and lower lip thrust upward. It was pathetic. Bahr shrugged.

"That sucks."

Splick!

With Amir out of the way, and this segment of the cave exhausted, Bahr turned around and started to head back. His gut instinct had been right after all - the other path would be the one that carried him through to the end of the quest. He had to admit, he was happy he'd chosen the path on the left first. He'd had no idea what he was missing out on when it came to Vampiric Offense. It had turned out to be quite a boon, allowing him to end the skirmish with full health despite the damage he had taken. How easy would earlier quests have been had he taken the plunge and converted his stats earlier?

As Bahr meandered through the corridor back toward the fork, he felt the excitement welling up inside of him once more. What was next on the docket of pirate shenanigans? Maybe there would be a fair maiden to rescue? Would he get to commandeer a ship? Express parlay if captured? Shoot a cannon? A part of Bahr wished that he had a Curved Sword for all of this. As it stood currently, it was an objectively garbage weapon, and it would be a waste to invest his Skill Points into it. But the novelty of fighting pirates with a cutlass wasn't lost on him.

Perhaps, in the future, if things changed he would be back with a weapon more befitting the setting.

For now, though, Dracbane was working wonders, and he didn't mean to discount that. Rarely had he had so much fun with a new toy. In fact, he had only used two weapons before this one - Minor Oculus and Scarecrow's Sickle. Minor Oculus had just been a rare sword, the one he got from his starter package when he first started the game. And Scarecrow's Sickle had been a gift from a higher leveled player, Macradon.

Minor Oculus had carried Bahr through the entirety of T1 handily, and at no point did he feel compelled to upgrade. It wasn't until the Demonic sword Scarecrow's Sickle had been put in Bahr's hands that he got a taste of what real power felt like. With it, he shoved his way past every obstacle in T2 through sheer brute force alone.

But it had come with a cost. It sapped away his sanity the more he used it. He began to indulge in the violent side of Aincrad more and more, and it had gotten to the point that if a day went by without combat, it made Bahr feel twisty. Even now, without the sword in his hands any longer, he felt its influence. Its blood lust nibbling away at the fringes of his mind, compelling him to accost his prey and powderize it under his raw power. Try as he might, Bahr felt as though he would never fully escape these urges.

Finally, back at the fork. Bahr immediately rounded the corner heading left, placing him into the path that had originally been on the right when he started all of this. Whatever was to come next, he would be prepared for it.

When Bahr entered the next chamber, he was taken aback by what he saw. A small pond was bowled out in the center of the massive cavity, with a full sized ship floating right in the middle! How did they even get a ship in here!? As unrealistic as it was, Bahr's eyes glimmered with curiosity and admiration. The virtual world allowed things to be so much cooler.

But standing in the way of this cool ass ship was yet another boatswain and a pair of deckhand lackeys. As Bahr stepped forward, the boatswain spoke out.

"Stop right there. You'll need to get through me to get to the captain," she said in a perfect British accent. Bahr just about melted.

"Guess that's what I'll need to do, then," Bahr lamented on an exhale, licking her with his eyes. In shape, assertive, and she had a British accent? It was too bad she was an NPC.

Without another word, he dashed forward, powerful bound closing the distance between where he had been and his enemies in the blink of an eye. His blade carved through the lot with ease, sapping the life essence from them and inflicting Bleed on at least two. They were all thrown back by the attack, sprawled out across the ground as Bahr nonchalantly heaved his blade against his shoulder.

Before they had a chance to recover, Bahr was upon the pack of mobs again, cleaving his massive blade through the lot in a singular wide arc. While both of the deckhands evaporated into pixelated blue ash, Jessamine's health bar depleted to an impossibly low level before the Bleed finally expired and left her alive with a shred. Bahr pointed the tip of his blade toward her neck where she lay on the ground, stopping her before she could reach for her weapon.

"Tell me a bit about your boss, and I might let you live." He wouldn't obviously, but if she were as cowardly as Amir, she might spill the beans anyways. Bahr had squandered the opportunity back then, but he had another chance now.

"As if. Cut me down like we both know you were going to. I have nothing left to say." Add fearless in the face of death to the list of attractive qualities. Had Cardinal created Jessamine this way just to play with his heart? It was beginning to seem that way.

"Have it your way. For what it's worth, I really thing we could have had something special," he mused with a wry grin, his blade illuminating with an amber light.

"Maybe, maybe not," she replied in a surprisingly sultry tone. God, these dialogue options were brutal.

Splick!

Two boatswains out of the way. Bahr wondered if there would be a third? Perhaps. But something told him that he would find only the captain on the ship. And once Bahr defeated him, he would have the ship all to himself. But how could he sail it out of here? Ah, that must have been the catch. It was a cool setting, a ship in a cave, but its location served another purpose. Clearly, Cardinal didn't want just anybody riding a ship around the sixteenth floor. It made sense, but still left Bahr a bit sour. Did he not deserve a treat like that after so much hard work?

As Bahr ventured toward the ship, he noticed a convenient dock of sorts leading right up to the deck. A part of him wanted to dash forward and rush onto the ship, but the rest of him wanted to hang back and enjoy the moment. If he truly was headed toward the final encounter of this quest, what was the rush? Why squander what little time he had left in a setting like this? It seemed like a fool's errand, anyways. Indeed, pirates were infamous for their booby traps. Such and obvious approach yielded unfavorable results, no?

Then again, the rest of this quest had been relatively straightforward and uninspired. Had it not been for the setting, Bahr probably would have felt like it was a slog. But roaming through a cave and battling pirates, some sexier than others? It was a dream come true. Everything he imagined it would be. And what of the captain? Would he offer the challenge that Bahr craved? Only time would tell.

As he neared the dock, he peered up toward the railing it led to. There were no obvious signs of traps, which was good. Though, it broke the immersion a little bit. A trap here would be the cherry on top. Captured by the captain and forced to use his wits to stage a daring escape, culminating in an epic showdown on the deck? That would have been a perfect ending to a quest like this. And who knew? Perhaps it was still a possibility. Maybe that was why the path here had been so straightforward.

Nope. It really was that straightforward. As Bahr hopped onto the deck without so much as a modicum of resistance, he peered around in search of anybody aboard. Either they were below deck, or there really was no one around. Either way, it was disappointing. This wasn't the climactic showdown that Bahr had been hoping for. What was he supposed to do now?

"Avast, worm."

The gravely voice stopped Bahr dead in his tracks. His eyes flickered up to the ship's wheel, where the captain now resided. Bahr could have sworn that he had looked up there already, and hadn't seen anybody. Had he just spawned?

"You have no right to come aboard my ship."

"You mean my ship? Yeah, that's right, I'm commandeering it. No biggie."

"We'll see about that."

The captain leaped down from the upper deck with his cutlass drawn, swinging vicious at Bahr as he landed. Bahr managed to draw his sword in time to guard against the attack and deliver a counterattack of his own, but it seemed that Burlock was quick on the trigger as well. Both men struck each other with their blades simultaneously before backing off and sizing one another up, preparing for the next exchange.

A status indicator near Bahr's name suggested that Burlock had been a tad luckier with their first exchange of blows, though. Bahr was poisoned, and had failed to inflict a Bleed against Burlock.

The strange thing about poison was that it came in waves. Bahr had felt fine when he dashed forward toward Burlock, taking the initiative for their next trade. He had felt fine when he raised his charged sword into the air in preparation to strike. But all at once, it went right side up. He clumsily missed his attack as a wave of nausea hit him, and didn't have the reaction time he needed to block the incoming strike. It got him directly in the stomach, and he gasped for air and clung the fresh wound and instinctively stepped backward.

Was Burlock grinning at him? He couldn't tell. But as his vision gradually cleared, he could definitely make out a smirk. Smug bastard. That first exchange had really set the tone for the rest of the duel. If Bahr's next few moves didn't go perfectly, he could find himself in serious trouble.

As the poison sapped the last of his health that it could and finally expired, Bahr took a deep breath. He needed to focus. The mob had inferior stats. Bahr could easily handle it if he just played his cards right and kept a level head. Anything less than that could spell his demise.

It was time to prove he still had it.

This time he waited for Burlock to make a move. And make a move he did, impatient with Bahr for having suddenly switched gears. Bahr narrowly sidestepped the attack and used his favorable positioning to score a convincing gash into the captain's abdomen. The man scowled and stepped backward, clutching the wound as he did so.

Still no Bleed proc, which was unfortunate. And Bahr could really use that Vampiric Offense right about now. But it seemed that it wasn't destined to be so easy. It was back to the old days.
