Oscar had received word from Jackpot that his axe was ready. While he was happy with his current axe, he found that the Holy Enhancement wasn't what he had expected it to be. Additionally, he was losing raw damage due to the fact that it only had two slots of damage. So, it was time to change around his build a little bit. Leeroy and Jenkins' Accuracy mastery had been quite good, but when he had selected that perk, he didn't really realize that he would be able to use his own cooking buffs for accuracy instead. As such, it was time to change to some damage. So, Oscar found himself on Floor 8, the lowest floor he could possibly go to in order to grind, and headed out into the jungle. If his last training outing was any indication of how long this would take, today's outing would present the perfect opportunity to get some Col and materials from the mobs on Floor 8.

Chancing upon some Orcish Outriders patrolling just outside the gates of the city, Oscar knew that his grind time had begun. He rushed into battle, his axe glimmering in the light. He took the Outriders completely by surprise. They didn't even realize they were being attacked as Oscar cleaved through their ranks and dealt over half their collective health in a single blow. They turned and drew their weapons. But Oscar was ready. As their vicious scimitars sailed through the air towards him, he danced between the blows perfectly. Once their volley was through, he stepped back a couple of paces. He took aim at the group, reaffirming his grip on his weapon. He intended to finish this round next turn. While he prepared, Leeroy and Jenkins hunkered down low, glaring and growling at the group of Orcs. Every muscle in the beast's body was coiled to strike, even though the system would prevent it from doing any damage.

Oscar rushed in for his second strike. His mighty axe cleaved through the ranks of the outriders. As their health bars reached zero, the orcs shattered like glass one-by-one. All except for one of them. The remaining Outrider had managed to just narrowly evade Oscar's blow. In so doing, it was positioned perfectly to deliver a counterblow in response. Oscar could only watch as the Outrider rushed forward and sliced into his shoulder with its deadly blade. He wasn't running as much Mitigation on this outing as he was accustomed to, so it did far more damage than he had been expecting. But Oscar didn't let that get to him. Instead, he collected his loot and put some distance between himself and the survivor. One more round of combat wouldn't kill him. All it would do was annoy the hell out of him. It was to be expected, though. He wasn't running as much accuracy as he'd grown accustomed to.

With one enemy still remaining, it would be foolish to unleash a second AoE attack. Luckily, Oscar had a single target attack that would do more than enough damage to finish off this Outrider. Quick as a flash, Oscar surged forward. One would expect someone who favored a battleaxe to be a hulking brute. But Oscar enjoyed his agility. The stopping power of the axe in the hands of a speedy, agile fighter provided him enough of an edge to dish out incredible damage while being able to dodge most, if not all, incoming attacks. Indeed, it would take a critical hit from most enemies to be able to even touch him. Even though he'd just received a blow from this orc, he would make sure to return the favor in kind. His weapon carved through the outrider, reducing its health to zero. It immediately shattered like glass, leaving nothing but its loot behind. Loot, which Oscar happily collected.

The trick behind training a familiar was to have them perform a task that in some way related to the desired mastery. When he had trained Leeroy and Jenkins originally, he had them [censored] clay discs out of the air before they landed. Now, he needed to come up with a way for them to harness their damage potential. So, he picked up a stone and tossed it to his canine companion. Jenkins caught it with its jaws and, sensing what his master wanted, bit down hard on the stone. The stone cracked, but that wouldn't be enough. Jenkins spat the stone out, looking a bit disappointed. Oscar smiled and scratched him behind the ears. It was perfectly fine to not get it on the first try. Part of him didn't want this to be over quickly. If it ended too soon, he wouldn't have much of an opportunity to get his grind on. Now, he needed to wait on his energy to regenerate.

Thankfully, he wouldn't need to wait long. In the meantime, he took some extra time to console his familiar with plenty of love. So what if they didn't pull it off yet. They had an entire day ahead of them. Plus, it was always fun to go out into the wilds and get some grinding done with his hound by his side. The creature had been with him through thick and thin. Happiness and sadness and everything in between. Just having an excuse to get out of the house was enough for Oscar. The training would be done when it was done. No sense trying to rush things. Plus, if they did that, then the training probably wouldn't be done correctly anyway. He sat down on a rock and stroked his companion's fur. Downtime was less boring when you got to pet a dog. Even if that dog was a vicious two-headed Cerberus that looked every bit as ferocious as the beast that sired it.

Oscar continued onward through the jungle. Soon enough, he came upon an Orc encampment. Despite the thick walls and intimidating adornments, the gate was left wide open. Which was weird. All of the NPCs here were programmed to fear the Monkey King that roamed the forest floor. But it was of no consequence. If anything, it gave Oscar the perfect farming spot. There were plenty of objects inside that Oscar could use to try and get his familiar to try and destroy with its jaws. Not only that, but the packs of Orcs seemed just far enough away from one another that he could engage one without having to worry about aggroing the other. So, he rushed in and delivered an Explode Catapult to the nearest group. He managed to hit all but one of them. That kinda bummed him out but then he was happy to find that he was able to deftly evade their counterattacks. So it sorta balanced out.

His next attack managed to fell two of the orcs, plus deal some damage to the Orc he'd missed the previous round. That particular orc missed its counterattack, but the other one caught Oscar in the hip with its deadly blade. Critical hits were Oscar's bane and he found himself frustrated with how prone to crits these creatures seemed to be. But ultimately it didn't matter. While they did a fairly significant amount of damage, he still had plenty of health remaining. Plus, his health would stabilize in two rounds out of combat if they only hit him once. So there was no sense worrying about they damage they dished out right now. They'd die and Oscar would regenerate. He collected the loot he earned from his attack and got ready for the next round. He hoped he had better luck hitting them next time.

Unfortunately, it seemed that his reduced accuracy was pitted against him for this fight. His attack completely whiffed both enemies, failing to even brush against them. The only saving grace was that their counterattacks similarly missed him by a mile. He cursed his rotten luck. Perhaps he should have waited to pick up the Precision mod before embarking on this outing. He couldn't imagine that the one additional accuracy would make that much of a difference, but here he was, missing his entire attack on this pair of orcs. They seemed to laugh at his inability to hit them, ironic considering they weren't able to hit him either. What's more was that they were both firmly in the yellow where it would take two or three more hits for Oscar to even come close. It was a little infuriating, but he wouldn't let it get under his skin lest it throw him off and extend the fight even more.

His next attack seemed to do the trick. At least for one of them. The Orc shattered like glass, leaving behind some loot for Oscar to collect. Learning from previous grinding sessions, Oscar knew to make sure to dodge the remaining Orc's counter before going for his hard-earned spoils. Once that was done, he wheeled around to face the orc and prepared himself for the next round. It was well past time to attempt to train Leeroy and Jenkins once again. Unfortunately, he found himself stuck in combat. He'd need to wrap this up quickly so he would be able to try and get some training done as soon as possible. He hoped that this wouldn't throw off his mojo too much. At least he would probably walk away with a fairly significant amount of Col, judging by the amounts these creatures were dropping. They seemed to be the highest possible level a mob could be on Floor 8. Just a touch more powerful than something on even keel with Oscar. A slight challenge, but worth it for the Col.

Oscar readied himself and surged forward. He charged up his Screw Dimension Sword Art and made ready to dispatch this orc once and for all. His axe fell and cleaved the creature in twain. At least, it would have, had it not shattered on impact like all the other mobs. Oscar collected his loot, surprised to find that he had chanced upon a Perfect-quality weapon. Unfortunately, it was only tier one. But still, perhaps he could find a use for it. Another visit to Jackpot was shaping up to be in order. If he managed to get a rare enhancement on the weapon, it would certainly be a godsend to a newbie trying to make their mark on Aincrad. But first things first. It was time to try and train Leeroy and Jenkins again. Then, he would need to wait out his energy regen and then he'd be good to go for another round of combat. Today was already shaping up to be a good day.

Oscar tossed his familiar a thick hunk of wood. This time, the normally indolent Leeroy snapped it up, much to Jenkins' chagrin. The "dopey" head of his familiar bit down hard on the hunk of wood. Though his teeth carved deep ruts into the wood, it was unable to break through. Leeroy spat it out as Jenkins gazed smugly at his "brother." Leeroy looked dejected, prompting Oscar to stoop down and comfort the hound. The dejection quickly subsided and Oscar found himself pinned to the ground by the hulking frame of his familiar as Leeroy licked his face mercilessly. A delighted laugh escaped Oscar's lips as he tried, playfully, to fight the creature off. "Come on Leeroy! Let me up!" But it was no use. As strong as Oscar was, he just didn't have it in him to force his overgrown puppy off of him while he was giving the man a literal tongue-lashing.

All Oscar could do was wait for Leeroy to get it out of his system. By the time the hound was finished, there was a thick coat of slobber all over his face and neck. He stepped off of Oscar with a playful bark and sat down on his haunches, tail wagging to and fro. Oscar ground, giving his hound a "stern" look as he wiped the saliva from his face. Although having his face washed by a dog could be construed as gross, Oscar really didn't mind. It simply came with the territory of having a dog. As his childhood with the Major taught him, treating a hound well will reward you with a loyal companion and the need to never was ones face again. He was happy to see his familiar so excited. He would be lying if he said he gave them the attention they deserved all of the time. But even still, they seemed happy to have his attention today. He would need to make a point to care for them better in the future. Even if it meant copious coatings of slobber.

But now it was time for more grinding. Oscar was back to full health, proving the notion that his health would stabilize purely through out-of-combat regeneration. His original group of Orcs hadn't yet respawned, but there was another group - conveniently numbering four - just a few paces away from the first. He rushed in and activated his Explode Catapult sword art. The sudden attack dealt devastating damage to the group. And with the element of surprise on his side, they hadn't been able to get their bearings together fully before countering. This resulted in their attacks missing him by a mile. While Oscar was getting ready for round two, the Orcs were still trying to catch up to round one. Leeroy and Jenkins' loud barking seemed to distract them just a bit because they seemed unsure of which one to turn their full attention to for a moment. Something Oscar would exploit as much as possible.

A second Explode Catapult dispatched all but one of the Orcs. This Orc seemed to be able to shake off the slight distraction provided by Leeroy and Jenkins and stabbed Oscar through the gut with its blade. Oscar winced as the blade was yanked from his abdomen. He hopped back, clutching the red gash. He was thankful that the pain sensors for SAO were set relatively low. Otherwise, he didn't know if he would be able to remain standing after such a hit in the real world. Of course, he went to great pains not to piss off people with knives to begin with. He'd never been stabbed before in real life, but he had taken a nail to the foot before. That hurt way more than his did, if he was recalling correctly. Of course, staying alive in combat would be rather difficult if a mob could completely incapacitate you with a single blow. Oscar was eternally grateful for Kayaba's "mercy." Or was it oversight?

A final Screw Dimension finally did the Orc in. Oscar wished, just once, that he would be able to kill a group of mobs in two turns. Even when he had double his current Accuracy, he only recalled such a thing happening once. At that was during the Halloween event with the zombies. He shuddered when he recalled their ability to defy death. He was glad it seemed to be an event-only ability. He couldn't imagine normal mobs having such a frustrating power. Then again, he couldn't imagine normal mobs hitting so disproportionally hard either. A monster that Oscar would be able to one-shot would probably barely be able to overcome his Mitigation. But those zombies seriously hurt. He was glad that event was over. The axe he'd received from that event was quite nice, even if the whole reason he was out here right now was to replace it.

Oscar tossed another hunk of wood to his familiar. This time, Leeroy was gracious enough to let Jenkins catch it. Despite Jenkins best efforts, however, the hound was unable to shatter the wood with his jaws. Jenkins spat the wood out, clearly growing more and more frustrated with himself. Oscar wouldn't let that happen. Not on his watch anyway. He quickly bent down to console the creature. Where Leeroy liked to go to town on Oscar's face, Jenkins was a bit more reserved. There was still a flicker of disappointment there, but it was overshadowed by the calm contentment of having his chin scratched gently. Finally, sensing that Jenkins had had enough love, Oscar backed away. The serious head of his cerberus was a little more aloof and thus wouldn't suffer much in the way of petting. At least, not comfortably. It had never once snapped at Oscar, but the man had been around dogs to know when their mood was shifting.

As Oscar waited for his energy to refill, he decided to take a closer look around the camp. Or, more specifically, survey the area from his spot. Most people like to portray Orcs as evil savages. But it seemed Kayaba went for a different route. Oscar fully expected to see NPCs stewing in cauldrons atop a fire or heads adoring the spikes outside the gates. But he didn't see that. While he knew the orcs were in conflict with the humans on this floor, it probably had nothing to do with the orcs killing and eating them and more to do with the orcs being territorial. They seemed to have a healthy fear of the Monkey King as Oscar noticed a tapestry hanging off of one of the tents adorned with a crude design of the Monkey King and the figures of fleeing green men. The attention to detail was something he would never stop commending Kayaba on. Oscar might be extremely pissed that he was stuck here, but he would also give credit where credit was due.

With his energy full, ti was time to go ahead and get some more grinding done. Neither of his previous groups had respawned yet, so he had to wander around until he found another group of four. He was actually shocked at how big the orc encampment was. It had to be at least the size of the main settlement of the floor, if not bigger. He wondered if there was possibly a quest that involved the orcs that would also unlock a new township for the players. Not a lot of people had spent much time on Floor 8, what with the risk of the Monkey King jumping in and ruining your entire day, if not your life. It was worth investigating for sure. Later though, not now. Now, he had a group of orcs to Explode Catapult. So he did just that. His blitz attack wasn't as effective this time though. One of them actually managed to score a hit on him. It didn't matter though. They were all half-barred.

His next blow managed to take half of the group out. In response, one of the remaining Orc's plunged its blade into Oscar's leg. Oscar winced but then quickly ducked to avoid the other orc's blade from catching him in the face. The first orc tore its blade free, which allowed Oscar to gain some distance between himself and the pair. So much for stabilizing his health bar. He collected his loot and made ready for the second round. But he was extremely upset that they had managed to score a second hit on him. It wasn't so much that they were threatening as they were extremely annoying. He'd really wanted to maintain himself at full health for the duration of this excursion. Clearly, however, some things were not meant to be. Oscar shrugged and reaffirmed his grip on his weapon. He was still nowhere near half health. Meanwhile it would only take one more good hit before these dudes went down.
