[F21-PP] Red Packet Redemption -- <<Nature's Treasure>>

Recommended Posts

Solei visibly sweated as she asked the question he was hoping she wouldn't ask. "I--uh, I was gathering materials for a shop I was opening but please don't tell anyone," he pleaded, clasping his hands together in front of each other. "If any of the kids found out that I had been sneaking to a higher floor, they're going to want to sneak to a higher floor and. . ." he exhaled, placing a hand on his forehead. "That would not be good."

"Oh God, Hydravion and Andromeda and Athena would give me so much [doo-doo] if they found out I had been sneaking to floor twenty-one of all places," he groaned, dragging his palms down his cheeks as he grimaced.

 ☀

"Oh yeah, the beach party, huh," he mumbled, scratching his chin. "Yeah, it's really been a while since the beach party, huh?" He sniffed.

He turned to Cordelia and nodded eagerly. "Yeah, it's going great! We've gotten a few more kids recently, actually!"

A beach party? NIGHT didn't even know there was a beach open in Aincrad. She nodded, eavesdropping on the two, humming in amusement to herself. Perhaps one day she should take it upon herself to go explore more of the other floors -- and maybe have winter clothes ready, like for the case of the fourth floor.

It seemed like Solei was involved in an orphanage? A questioning look on NIGHT's face, as she turned to the man for her query. "Do you run it, or were you involved in it?" It was hard for her to tell -- wouldn't kids most likely not find their way into the game? Were they taking care of a couple of NPCs? That was surely an odd thought. "I can't imagine running a daycare all the time. It sounds like a nightmare to me." The woman turned to Cordelia, hands gesturing to the guardian. "You visited them before, I take it?"

Cordelia hummed to to herself as she nodded her head. "That sounds great, keep up the good work," she said with a smile.

"Actually, I've never visited them before," she mumbled, scratching her chin. "I'm not really a kid person," she said with a small laugh. "They're a bit too much for me. . . I don't think I can really handle one, much less twenty of them," she sighed, shaking her head.

Kids were. . . annoying. She's never really interacted with them much, but they. . . they were something. Sure, it might not be like that for all of the kids, but damn, seeing them just around floor one was enough to make her head hurt sometimes.

"I'm sure I'll be able to visit one day, though," she said firmly with a nod. "Just please make sure they don't burn me alive or something."

Oh, she was serious. Kids were an unstoppable force that she couldn't even control.

"Do you run it, or were you involved in it?"

"Well, I sort of run it, with a couple of extra people, of course," he said brightly, his demeanor perking up. "Yeah, the caretakers have all pretty much known each other from day once, hence why we established the "orphanage" so early in the game," he explained, his smile faltering. "I don't really like calling it an orphanage. . . it makes it sound all gloomy and makes it sound like the kids there don't have parents," he said with a nervous laughed as he scratched his nape. "It's a hard name to change but I like to call it something along the lines of a temporary daycare."

"Oh, yeah, it really can be sometimes," he said with a deadpan. "All the caretakers including me really want to be there for the kids, but at the same time, we want to be contributing to the progression of the floors, which if you haven't guessed, is a pretty hectic schedule to take care of," he sighed, his shoulders slugging.

"I s'pose, I'm better fit for the job more than most people though. . . I was a teacher back in the real world, it gave me a bit of experience so that was a great perk."

Woah, what? There were twenty kids? Her eyes widened at the realization. Imagine having twenty small humans that were just pure and absolute chaos, running about a small building. How many caretakers were there again? NIGHT did her best to remember -- three? Four? Five? Having to take care of one little cousin for a handful of minutes was already taxing to her, there was no way she could accept imagining four or five at once for an extended period of time.

The woman shook her head, facing Cordelia. "I get what you mean... I just don't have the energy for the task. Uh, non-literally speaking. By the way, my energy gauge is full."

She nodded slowly, intensely at Solei's further explanation. With how the man was describing it, perhaps it was more akin to a routine job in real life. It was a little easier to grasp the idea, since they were doing it out of their own volition, anyway. Without prompting, the newbie also dropped their occupation into the conversation. Interesting. "Like for younger kids? At least you're finding solace where it works best for you. It's got to be worth something, y'know?"

"Yeah, mine's just about full too," she hummed, brushing her lap before standing up.

She lifted her head and raised an eyebrow when she noticed a few kobolds arriving. "Well, that timing was convenient," she muttered, nodding to NIGHT before she unsheathed her katana-- much to her demise. Yeah, she was always down to kill things but when it comes to hunting, the repetitiveness wasn't really her style. Well, at least she was losing anything from this, except her time.

She charged into the quartet of mobs with Amatsu no Homura already fully charged up. Her katana flashed a bright light as she weaved her way through each kobold, slicing her way through their tough skin. As fast as she was, one of them seemed to be able to nick at her back, its pickaxe leaving a large red gash in her haori just before white hot sparks erupted from the thin cloth, immobilizing the kobold.

"I guess it may seem that way to other people," Solei said with a small laugh, "I was the oldest of seven other siblings growing up, so I guessed that gave me a bit of experience as well as being a teacher," he said cheerfully. Oh yeah, he always loved talking about home. It really helped him not get all depressed and homesick.

"I taught American sign language back at home, so I really covered all age groups when it came to who I taught," he explained, beaming at the girl. "--but yes, I did teach many young kids. I haven't really taught many kids here though," he sighed, rubbing the back of his nape. "Most people here are Japanese, and I barely have any experience with Japanese sign language so it's a lot harder to teach them considering that I have to teach them a bunch of basic English first," he sighed, shaking his head. "I'm learning though, but yeah, I'm very happy where I am right now!"

A hum from the woman as she listened into Solei's reflections. Who would've thought the people, let alone the kids here were mostly Japanese? It was a treat enough to know that Solei had taught and learned sign language at all. NIGHT looked at her hands for a second, wondering if she would be able to pick up the skill at some point. She'd always preferred something more practical like that to learning her native language.

Cordelia stood up and took off running, giving NIGHT a nod before she headed over to the distance. Four kobolds -- looks like it was time for her to take action again. Giving Solei a curt, "That's good -- hold that thought though," the adventurer got up with a jump, brandishing her blade before following up on her companion's attack -- one Calamity Disaster to accompany an Amatsu no Homura, whittling down their opponents' health bars to the warmer hues.

"Nice one," she commented shortly after NIGHT had finished her attack, bringing the kobolds into a last hitting mark for her. Of course, that never works out because Lady Luck was never, ever on her side.

Cordelia swung her katana at the group of kobolds again, this time, only managing to hit one of the three- but hey, at least she knocked it out. "Alrighty, one more AoE attack should do it!" she exclaimed, trying to be more enthusiastic. There was nothing worse than being down in the dumps during a battle, after all. There were only two left, so it should be easy peasy! Hopefully, NIGHT would be able to kill both of them in a single AoE hit, and it wouldn't be a surprise if she did, her luck had been way better than Cordelia's so far- probably better than hers in the past two years, really. Totally something that she wasn't envious about!

Be envious. Look upon the deaths of the fallen Kobolds and wince and rejoice for the two players' freedom from combat. Just as NIGHT relinquished another shower of light from her sword, the two kobolds had started to flee, abdomens shredded in half from her swift maneuver. What was left of them would be a swirl of scattered fragments, and the pickaxes that fell to the floor in a clatter. New minions would scoop them up in due time, perhaps, but the player turned to Cordelia and Solei with a nod, before glancing over to the tunnels that lead the trio inwards.

"Should we keep going?"

They'd preferred otherwise, it seemed. And NIGHT didn't feel too comfortable going at it alone now, somehow isolated from the group she'd become used to on her short moment's trip here. Something along the lines of 'it's fine' and 'I can just return here another day' as her excuse to herself as she'd followed them outwards, back to safety and the town--

--And that was it. No more red packet redemption. This has been going on for far too much, too long.

SP please.
