Queen's Fall {F02 - PP - "Long Live the Queen"}

Recommended Posts

Ronnel walked along the cobbled streets of the second floor's main town, looking around. This town was a bit of a change from the somewhat busy streets of the Town of Beginnings - more of a middle ages European settlement instead of the bustling main city. It was nice getting out and exploring the other floors more, and the spear-user was enjoying the change. The buildings here were shorter, squatter than what he was used to, and strangely the more open sky was relaxing to him. He was looking for something to do as he wandered the streets, maybe a small bounty quest or something. He paused as he overheard two other players huddled up, talking to each other.
"I'm telling you - that Queen wiped us out, it isn't a joke! We need to get a bigger team together before we try again, even if that potion thing would be useful for us. Come on, let's see if we can go get one more to work with us." They moved off before Ronnel could reach out to them, warping away with a teleport crystal. He frowned and rubbed the back of his head.

"Well that sounds like it'd be something to take care of. Some Queen... Huh. Wonder what it was." He paused as his screen flashed with an optional quest appearing. "Slay wasps until the wasp queen appears - Oh come on, overgrown wasps?" Well, he hated the things with a passion outside, so being able to take some of that anger out on them sounded like a great idea. First though - he headed towards one of the local boards. If there was somewhere to pick up someone else who was trying to do this quest, the quest board might be just it. That, or a tavern.

Second floor, seems like the perfect starting point for my ascension. Not the bottom low that is the first floor but also not somewhere where I can endanger myself, or my lovely assistant that accompanies me on a stroll through the main setlement. "Lovely weather we're having here." I mutter casually, glancing up and around us. A sharp "Yes sir." from the bespectacled maid next to me. She was walking one step behind me again, a bad habit of hers that I've given up on trying to correct after all this time. "Tell me more about this quest.." I muttered.

Her reply however came via an outstretched hand that was pointing at a nearby bulletin board. "In summary, a queen bee needs to be exterminated. How can you not know about this quest sir, its like noob 101 in the floor guide!" she said, the last part in a higher than intended tone. I simply shrugged and went to read the details myself as I replied: "You know very well that I've been isolating myself in the lab all these time. I barely had any contact with the outside except our patron sage." i grinned as I turned to look her in her crimson eyes, unsuccessfully hidden behind her glasses. "You should know, you've been there with us!" The crimson haired maid was prepared to counter my statement but refrained as a certain player entered our field of view.

Solei stretched his arms behind his back as he hopped of off the teleport pad. Opening a shop. . . wasn't an easy process. Comparing prices with competitors, advertising. . . blah, blah. He was just glad that he was able to find a property so close to the orphanage. He wouldn't have to travel between two and two!

He looked around and blinked, seeing that there was a bigger amount of players around the bulletin board than there usually was. Was there something cool posted on there or something? With his child-like behavior popping up, he scrambled his way over to the board.

A wasp.

All of this commotion. . . for a wasp. He sighed as his shoulders visibly sagged. What did he expect? Some kinda of front-line quest? Even if it was, why should he care? He's literally a level five. Who takes care of kids. Who has never even poked a mob before in his whole damn life, and a person who never intends to poke one. He just. . . doesn't like combat alright?

Ronnel scratched the back of his head as he looked at the milling mob near the bulletin board. He'd been right - there were certainly enough players running about here to do this quest with. The downside to this discovery was that they were all constantly jumping about, grouping and regrouping as they tried to get with people they knew or whatever their discussions were about.

"Well this is a fine mess, how am I supposed to - wait." Ronnel blinked as he noticed a faintly familiar mop of blonde hair. It took him a few moments to place where he'd seen the guy under it - then he snapped his fingers. The portal and the power of friendship and strong wills event up on the city on the seventeenth floor. Ronnel lifted up his hand and waved at the young blonde as he walked over towards them.

"Ho there Dracul, nice ta see ya again! You here for this wasp quest too? Ah, darn, looks like you've got a companion already. Hello, milady, name's Ronnel, pleasure to meet you." He gave the duo a small bow. "Looks like I'll have to snag someone else to join in. Not sure on this though, goodness they're all so busy over there." He was a bit bemused as he watched the people arguing close to the board.

The two of us looked at the newcomer, I too, recognized him from the event and maybe was a little embarrassed as from my memory, I don't think I was the most 'cool-looking' being dragged to all places by that rabid blond lioness. With somehow contradictory feelings I make a slight bow in return while the maid beside me does one as well. "Hey Ron, I take it you're here for this as well?" I ask while signalling at the little piece of paper glued to wooden board next to us.

"It's just a bee right? can't be that hard!" I claimed indifferently, earning a cold stare from the maid accompanying me.I shrug it off and scratch my head again while saying: "How about we get that guy!" I randomly point at a lone guy in a black suit. "Hey, you wanna do this bee quest with us?" I asked nonchalantly, slightly raising my voice and waving so that he knows i'm addressing him.

Solei looked over to a group and squinted. Were they talking to him? He looked around. Wha--

"Uhm, sure?" He mumbled hesitantly, rubbing the back of his neck as he shuffled over to the group of three. "I-- uh, are you sure you want me to help you?" He asked with a small chuckle. "I don't really. . . do damage?" He explained, poking around with his fingers before he sighed to himself. Who was he kidding? He was never going to get anywhere from where he was now. He literally had zero damage. Zero. How does one even achieve that?

"I mean, I can try to heal you guys, but I don't know how much I would be able to. . . and if its going to be useful at all during the fight, but I'll try my best!" He exclaimed, a sparkle showing up in his eyes as he balled his fists in front of him.

"Ah, don't worry about it, that's fine, that's fine." Ronnel waved his hand off as he rubbed his chin. "This shouldn't be too difficult a fight, so we can probably handle this. And if you're healing, well then we don't have to worry so much if this wasp queen manages to hit us with any DoTs or the like." He frowned slightly as he looked at the details of the quest. "Hold on though - there's a max limit of three active combatants." His fingers hovered over the button to invite as he hummed in thought, looking between the other three that were in front of him. "So who all am I inviting? Also - my name is Ronnel young man, nice to meet you. And a healer is always useful."

Unless you were running some absurd 'kill them all before they have a chance to attack back' or had so much mitigation that they couldn't affect you. But the hopeful way that the young man was looking back and forth at he and Dracul kept Ronnel from saying that. Besides, while Ronnel knew his own stats were starting to climb out of abysmal mediocrity, they still weren't the best even for a first stage player - he was still using a quest reward from one of the beginner quests for crying out loud.

"Perfect!" I replied, looking as if I ignored all his damage related comments. "Me and him!" I say with a smile, then I motioning towards the maid. Taking note of my intention, she slightly bends over and while raising the long skirt of her maid outfit just above ankle level, she revels a small dagger there held by a frilly garter matching the rest of her outfit. I'm simply here to escort lord Dracul but don't be worried about me when the fighting starts. I can take care of myself." she added with a dangerous smile that seem to give a little more weight to her words.

"I agree with the need of a healer, while not a must have here in the lower floors. I have it on good authority that healers are very sought upon on the frontlines. Especially during major boss fights. They literally keep their team alive while the others focus on either tanking or damage dealing, maximizing their efficiency." He imagined the sage's reaction if she were to find out that he was actually listening to her ramblings... sometimes. "Now that we got that out of the way. We should go towards the <High Fields of Crossings>." she added, summoning a HUD map big enough for all 4 of them to see and pointed at the area a little further away from them. "Let's make it official.. again. My name's Dracul, please don't give me any funny nicknames... I already have someone that does that way too much." a sigh escaping him at the end. "And this is my assistant Claudia."

"Again. . ." he mentioned, rubbing the back of his neck as he broke into a sheepish smile, "my healing only corresponds to your HP. . . so I don't think I can do much if you're in the lower levels, er, no offense or anything," he added quickly. "Though, I'm going to be a lot more than a healer when I get more EXP!" He chirped, grinning. "I've been looking at the mods that comes with the skills and there's all sorts of things in there like transferring energy, creating barriers for your party, curing status effects!" Solei said excitedly, grinning like a foolish child as he rambled on about his plans for the future.

"Oh, my name is Solei, uh, without the 's'," he added, nodding to Ronnel with a smile. "Nice to meet you, Ronnel. It's a real pleasure!"

He looked over to the other stranger and nodded his head. "Yeah, but I was really hoping that I could be some kind of pure healer, y'know? Most healers mix in a bit of DPS or tank builds into their sets, but I was mainly just hoping to be a backline healer. Of course, I would have mitigation and evasion to help me survive and actual fight, but I'm not going to try to actively get hit, and I'm never going to try to attack something. . . it might sound stupid since we're in a sword fighting game but I told myself I wouldn't do it. . . for the kids," he mumbled, shaking his head before he looked up to the now introduced Dracul. "It's a pleasure to meet you too, Dracul. . . and Claudia," he said, nodding to his assistant? He wasn't terribly sure why there would be a need for assistants in this game since you'd probably get the same information as your next door neighbor but he didn't question it.

"Well, while it only corresponds to our HP - your healing should be pretty much on par with the damage that these enemies are giving out. Besides on top of that you'd just be healing what got past our armor. You'll do fine, no worries." Ronnel flicked the invites to the two of them - pausing for a moment as he wondered why a maid was going to be going with them but - well. He couldn't exactly blame her for sticking around them if she felt obligated to for some reason. Hopefully the Cardinal system wouldn't be giving them any guff for her being close. He listened as Solei rambled on, and chuckled. "Nothing wrong with looking ahead and planning out. Support roles are just as important as any of the mainline fighting roles after all."

He hummed nodded. "Miss Claudia is correct - we should start moving along. Taking care of this thing before their numbers start ramping up and become a problem." The Fields of crossing weren't too far away - it wouldn't take them too long to reach it. As they started out, Ronnel continued on speaking. "I'm a two handed spear user, with heavy armor, so I'll have alright burst damage and can handle hits coming my way. What about you Ser Dracul?" He wasn't going to put the younger boy on the spot by asking his armor type right now, no need to make him feel awkward about using a weapon. And it was fine that someone who was helping look after children wasn't keen on fighting - most of the children that had managed to get into this cursed death game were safely within the safe zone walls, where not much could threaten them.

I listened to our proclaimed 'pacifist healer' future plans and slightly frowned how they shared similarities with my own. I winced at the easy mention of 'a sword fighting game'. "You won't be able to do many quest on your own then. Putting yourself at a disadvantage." I pointed out in a flat tome. "We're fighting here with our lives in steak and you must look for yourself before starting to protect others." I thought @Solei resolution was a bit foolish but decided not to comment further, only to add my philosophy at the end. Everyone has their style and it was not my concern what happened to others. We needed to stay alive and push forward!
As Claudia showed us the location I slightly nod, cursing myself for the lack of knowledge on different floors' geographies. We set on towards our destination and reply to @Ronnel: "Two handed spear eh..." I involuntarily parrot while thinking of a certain annoying blonde with the same weapon type. Banishing away her image from my mind, I continue: "I'm using a two handed long sword in combination with heavy armor. Leave the tanking to me for now..." I sneak a glance at Sol before continuing: "...with plans of adding some support skills to my kit in the future." I declared with a small smirk.

Without me noticing Claudia sneaked next to Soleil and added: "I think its very honorable of you to dedicate yourself to aiding the rest out of free will. Me and my brother are in master Dracul's service so I can relate to the feeling." a small smile escaping her at the end as she adjusted her glasses.

Solei accepted the invitation with a small smile and nodded his head. "Thanks, I'll try my best!"

He raised a brow and turned over to Dracul with a nervous chuckle. "Yeah. . . that's why I've only done the first one, I have no intention on continuing that chain of quests, anyway," he mumbled, sweat-dropping at his flat tone. "Y-yeah, but I'm not really the reckless type. . . once I level up, I'll be able to heal a lot to others, including myself! So once I get a little bit higher, I'll be all fine!" He beamed.

He could feel his palms start to sweat when he felt Dracul's gaze set on him briefly. Did this man want to throw some hands or something? "Th-that's a good idea, we need more healers after all!" He squeaked, nodding his head feverishly.

Solei paused as he felt Dracul's assistant come up to him. The hell? When did she get here? "Oh, thanks," he mumbled, scratching the back of his neck with a sheepish grin. "I dealt with kids back in the real world so I figured I would use that to the kids here."

"Ah, I'm a heavy armor user too, so that's not too much a concern." Ronnel chuckled as the little group reached the city gates. "And I suppose to each their own in terms of playstyle - though, to be fair.." He shrugged his shoulders as he waved at the gate guard. "We're in a death game - but it wasn't originally intended or marketed to be that way. Though from what I remember, this wasn't supposed to be heavily marketed towards children, so I'm surprised there are that many are in this thing." He shrugged slightly and then turned one eye towards Dracul as they hit the fields.

"What is it that you and your assistants do, anyway Dracul? "  They were now out in the fields, so he pulled his spear out of his inventory. He tested the weight of Varathra, spinning the twin-bladed spear around for a moment as he adjusted to it. "I'm curious because I'm still trying to decide what my crafting tree will branch into. I've met a merchant that I know of, and a blacksmith, but I haven't settled on anything for my own skill." Right now all he had was combat skills and while they were necessary they couldn't be everything. "And do either of you know what we need to do to spawn the Wasp Queen - is it like, kill some of the little wasps, or do we just find her?"

"Oh that's so sweet of you!" she claimed with a smile. Then after stealing a glance to make sure I wasn't hearing them she muttered something into @Solei's ear. I decided to ignore it at the time but later I found out that that she'd whisper : "I know a bit or two on dealing with kids too, I've been in master's service for a long time. I also have a big brother that's more childish than he lets out." with a giggle the then resumes her normal position to his side.

I took note of his earlier comment, mentally wishing him luck in that endeavor, despite seeing the quest abandonment as a major drawback. I also made a mental note to research those beginner quests myself as when they prompted in my HUD I was busy with a experiment in the lab and brushed it away. @Ronnel's question brings me back to the proper chain of thoughts as I reply to him. "I own a somehow successful alchemy shop. Claudia and her brother work there as my assistants. Thanks o the patronage of the blonde sage we meet during the flash event on floor 17, I didn't need to step outside the shop much. We had a mutually beneficial deal: She'd provide me with money, materials and information, in return I would refine them into powerful alchemical concoction and whatnot she needed to keep pushing into the frontlines." a small smile escapes me at the mention of my good fortune. "We also served a few noblemen NPCs and Ariel would use our shop as a hub to sell off her hand made tailor wares."

The mention of her name prompted Claudia to pay a little more attention to our conversation. She was reply to Ronnel's last questions in my stead after I made a subtle hand gesture behind me to let her know my intention. She summoned her HUD and scrolled through their current quest info she'd received from Ariel a while ago. "The queen simply spawn around the high fields, there's no prerequisite to that but we might run into normal bee mobs while and after we look for her.

Solei hummed softly as he nodded his head. "That certainly sounds interesting," he mumbled, chuckling to himself, nodding to her before she scampered back to Dracul. That boy still gives him the creeps. Seriously, he swore that he was after his head or something.

The bluenette zoned out during most of the conversation. Ah, the sky was pretty blue today. Like his hair!

"Hah?" He blinked, looking over at the group after a few minutes of zoning out. "Oh. I'm sure she'll show up soon," Solei commented, nodding his head. "I didn't see any other players on the way here, so it's not like it was killed or anything," he shrugged, "but I'm no expert, so whatever I guess?" He said with a slight deadpan, holding up his hands.

Man, sometimes he didn't even understand himself.

"A-anyway! I'm sure we could kill this thing in a round if we really wanted to! So let's just get to that!"

"Interesting, an alchemist.' Amusing - it was a profession that didn't have a direct real-world equivalent. Maybe Dracul had been a chemist or something in the real world, and was applying those skills here in the game? Or had he just thought that alchemy seemed like it would be interesting? Either way, it seemed like he knew what he was going to be doing with himself in here, which was more than Ronnel could say for himself. the responses to his question though distracted Ron from pursuing that line of thought. It seemed like the Queen could just appear whenever then, from what the two others said. Ronnel blinked and started to ask if there was a particular place where the Queen liked to spawn - Claudia seemed to have access to information on the game, when he froze, staring back behind the woman.

That was a large bee. Ronnel had assumed like maybe it would be the size of a cat, or a small dog. That was decidedly not the case. The wasp that he was staring at was closer to the size of a Great Dane - and flying. It was coming at them, its wicked arms spread wide with the inside edges of its forelimbs serrated, cutting through the air. Ronnel cursed under his breath and raced towards it, darting past Claudia who wasn't looking in the right direction. The man skidded to a halt, planting himself in the path of the mob, intercepting it. He brought Varathra up, the twin blades of the spear flashing in the light as he thrust upwards, stabbing into the Wasp Queen's abdomen. His weapon tore a bloody hole in its carapace, and he watched as a status icon flickered above it. Excellent! Stacking a DOT on this thing could only help.

The insectoid mob was not pleased about the strike. It retaliated with a strike, one of its serrated limbs catching the spear-user on the shoulder and knocking him about. The Tem Armor held strong though, and he only staggered with a muffled curse as he recovered his stance.

I hear Claudia taking a sharp breath when Ronnel started dashing towards her. My first impulse was to ask what the hell was he thinking of doing but then I could hear the faint buzzing noise behind us as he was midway. "Bingo!" I say as my hand tensed on the weapon's pommel. As I turn around to follow up on Ronnel's attack, I catch a glimpse of the maid who made a sideways somersault away from the danger and with swift movements pulled her hidden dagger. She was at some distance from us, the weapon in a defensive stance as she extended her free hand to protect Soleil. "Stay close to me!" she said in a low tone, not to distract the bee from her attackers.

Meanwhile I unsheath my blue bladed two handed straight sword and dash behind Ronnel. "I got your back!" I claim confidently as I took a swing at the flying mob. I bring my sword above head and slash it downwards with all my might, the system recognizing my intention of using a Sword Art and guiding my movement to strike the flying opponent. It took only a split of a second but I was a little surprised by the grace in my movements. I let out a slight sigh of relief as the tip tore through the bee queen. "Looks like having a long sword works out well against flying mobs. Claudia, you stay behind with Soleil!" I order her, after pondering for a second on the issue of trying to hit these mobs with a dagger.

Solei kept his eyes trained on the duo attacking the queen. That was good, they should be able to kill it in the next round. He stuck his hand out in front of Claudia and gave her lopsided smile. "They have it in the bag," he said cheerfully, nodding his head over to both Ronnel and Dracul. "So you don't need to worry about it," he beamed, giving her a thumbs up.

His blue eyes trailed back to the duo and sniffed. Ronnel had barely taken anything from the queen, but Solei would feel seriously guilty if he weren't to do anything throughout this whole battle, so let's try giving healing a shot!

He grinned as he held out his hands, soft blue light erupting from the ring that Jackpot had given him not too long ago as well from his palms and the tips of his fingers. "Oh-ho-ho, I forgot how cool it looked when I did this!" He said excitedly, holding his hands over to Ronnel. "I know it's not much, but I really wanted to do something!" He called over to him, giving him a thumbs up with one of his glowing hands.

Ronnel was straightening up from the impact recovery when a blue blade flashed up in a Sword Art, slicing into the Wasp Queen and sending it reeling backwards. Good - build a tempo and keep it up, and try to keep the thing's focus on the two of them, not on the softer people behind them. He didn't want to find out what those claws or that jagged stinger would do to Claudia or Solei.

The creature shrieked and Ronnel spun his spear around, bringing it back to bear. He braced one foot back and thrust upwards, the twin blades lancing forward in a stab that bit into the carapace of the Wasp again. As he landed the blow, a gush of blood washed down from the wasp queen as the bleed proc ticked over.

"Thanks for the assist!" Ronnel called out as a soft light washed over him, and his HP counter ticked back upwards. It wasn't much but it was something - and it would be good practice for the boy if he wanted to be a healer in the future. Ronnel bit back a curse as the Wasp Queen let out another shriek and lashed out. The serrated claw rang out against the metal of Ronnel's armor, knocking him back a pair of steps.

"Where's the Raid when you need it?" He laughed as he called out to the others.

Claudia left out a small sight as she realized that Sol thought that she was worrying for the frontline and not for him. Still, he wasn't acting rashly so she didn't interject as he started using a skill. I watched Ron recover a slither of hp then slightly turned around to see that one of our non-combatants was the the cause of it; so that's the First Aid Skill in action. I saw it a waste to restore such a insignificant amount but keep to myself as we were still midfight.

"We're all the Raid we need!" I answer with a grin. After the queen's attack on Ron I became more confident that we could easily dispatch her highness with the least of efforts. My hubris got the better of me, the queen easily dodged my downward slash... apparently learning from the first time. "Improve, adapt, overcome!" I say with a low voice, questioning if the bee's AI was actually capable of that, while saying it as a mantra for myself and the group.
