[E3|F10-SP] Wonder Why

Recommended Posts

When she'd found the chance, after ridding her sights of the undead figments, her eyes landed on the two dungeon maps she'd retrieved from her efforts. She hadn't even noticed them during her scuffles and runs. Her thoughts went back immediately to the two wardens down back at Tartarus, and she wondered if she should be keeping them around.

After all, being on Floor 10? It's not like they'd serve much use for me particularly.

... On the other hand, perhaps someone else might be able to use it. Whoever that was, it just wouldn't be her. Maybe she could rope in Bistro to holding onto it for the time being. She retracted her hand over the discard icon, swiping around her inventory further just to check how her item accumulation was going.

Her hoard was ever growing, it seemed. Good. NIGHT kept an eye on her col count, for the most part, before glancing over at her eggs. A handful more might be all she needed, and then maybe she could scoop up the boys' reroll tickets as well.

It looked like something out of a movie poster, how NIGHT trekked down the gravelly graveyard with a composed gait. Yet under the calm, the player was brewing an inner storm. As the wind began to pick up around her, the player mused for a bit, half-hearted in her joking -- maybe she should get herself a cape. It would've been easier to play her persona better with a peripheral as extravagant as that.

Her face fell, trying to wave off the idea. Melodramatic, she chided, as she approached a tree long dead in her vicinity. Removing a handful of colourful items that seemed out of place from the setting, she moved on, tucking her hands back into her tracksuit's pockets.

NIGHT wondered if DAY had moved on with their time, by now. Surely they would've been two steps behind her if they could. How far would they have wandered by now, excavating the entire floor to look for her?

This is so dumb. I'm worrying about her like a lost puppy, now.

And NIGHT wondered where the voice inside her, one that defended her emotions came from. How could she not, it asked? For starters, why was she even worried in the first place? DAY was a system entity, for Cardinal's sake. Anything they might've needed, she was certain their digital overlord would be able to provide, especially for one of its pawns to advance on their target goals.

Then there was also the possibility that DAY had already committed the floor map to memory -- whether it be part of their interest for NIGHT's journey out today, or it coming part and parcel with the Cardinal agent territory, it was hard to tell. But they'd known where her dungeon entrance was, and found much more success in navigating Tartarus. Surely, at least the Gemini had a better sense of directions than her, and better yet she had what might've been the best kind of luck on her side.

Speaking of luck, there it is. Another cache of items, neatly scattered around a rock in broad daylight.

... Score, NIGHT guessed, letting out a breath of resentment at the moment's sheer irony.

Then was the more crucial element -- why she'd even cared about their well being in the first place. Drop the whole schtick with their appearance manipulating her emotions, for once. Didn't she find the double an annoyance to begin with?

Even for all their banter and fiery, slick exchanges, NIGHT still had some reservations about DAY. Not to mention their previous orders to -- oh, scare and maim them? Two -- right, she'd nearly forgotten -- two times she'd faced danger, put right into the risk of actually falling apart in the digital torture chamber. And they still had the heart to talk with her as though they were friends.

Were they friends? Maybe that was just a figment of their imagination, implanted duly by Cardinal's orders once again. What a self important brat, NIGHT shamed, cracking her knuckles as a pack of enemies finally entered her vision. For all her confusion in her misplaced feelings about her 'ally', the player thought it best to find time to shred hell.

So she did. Calling forth Dracbane to her fingers and waving it about, getting herself ready to strike, she shot forth, a blur of dastardly black and radiant white against cool, muted greys. A paragon of gratuitous, energized violence, painted in monochrome, retouched with a sliver of vibrant blues and reds.

Such was the toil she'd go through now, making her way towards the Void for a view. NIGHT knew it was a locale of some importance, but its neglect made her curious of why it was even of note in the first place. Some spooky noises, she'd heard? Was that by DAY's words? Bah, forget it. Their phrases were better off forgetting, anyway.

"Would you believe me now, that this face was a gift from the heavens?"

Especially that. NIGHT gritted her teeth together, driving her blade into one of her foes and ripping it cleanly through at its abdomen.

Something about the pack of creatures she was facing off against didn't seem right. Ah -- it was the first wave not being completely decimated by the time more monsters picked up their aggression towards her. NIGHT let the flow of combat take her, jumping into the air, a performative backflip away from one of the revenants' attacks. Then, as she landed, bouncing to regain a steady footing, she darted forth, plunging her edge into her enemies, dredging out the weak and unable of the crowd, leaving two abled opponents left standing.

More to come, then. Let them, NIGHT mused.

Had her counterpart been around, maybe she wouldn't have to pull as much weight trying to tackle her enemies alone. She wondered for a moment if DAY had the privilege of receiving drops from their share of culled monsters. Probably not, for the better of the system. No point rewarding or keeping information about a paper-thin fragment when there were better resources to spend its energy on.

Plus, on the off-chance the system ever pulled something like this on the masses, surely players were going to take advantage of that, right?

Imagine someone else being this close with their other. NIGHT grinned, pressing her blade through another enemy once again, watching their form shatter in front of her. Imagine anyone else accepting their attempted murderer's presence, just to lug them around as a follower and hold their stuff for a bit. Hell, given that DAY was essentially a system-forged replica of herself, even down to mirroring fighting capabilities, it would be pretty broken to have them around, rescuing NIGHT in the nick of time, for all time, until the end of the game.

No way Cardinal would let that happen. She'd hoped not, anyway. A cruel judge abiding by a fair rulebook, that's how NIGHT saw the system working. Unfortunately, 'fair' in this case should be working against the players' favour, and shouldn't be describing some element of torment, but it did.

Two apparitions left. Take one down, scatter its remnants around... One more creature of the dead for slaying.

NIGHT let out a cool breath, shifting the blade in her hands. Her stance had gotten more aggressive, these days. And she'd worked hard trying to keep her sword in the defensive, too. Not to mention how powerful such a pose was, its protective qualities overriding the risk of getting damaged while dishing out just about the right amount of pain. Plus, she'd gotten her strength up enough as of late to manipulate a blade of this size and weight easily with one hand.

She wouldn't do that, though. Her weapon was a two-handed sword, after all. NIGHT bet her sword arts wouldn't even trigger unless both her hands were on her edge's hilt. Approaching the sole survivor of the mob pack, she raised her blade to her side, preparing to deliver upon it one final blow.

Amongst the stardust did she look upon Dracbane's surface, trying to catch the light of the moon from where she stood. A simple check to ensure that her blade wasn't damaged, after all the scuffles she'd put it through recently. Plus, it was a blade used multiple times before. She'd do well to keep such an interesting weapon in its top form when she could afford to.

Nyanko's squeakings pulled her out of her daze, reminding her of the present and her journey down wherever else so that DAY wouldn't follow. Oh, and the Void. It was a wonder how she was able to keep track of anything these days.

She kept her blade, before giving her kitten a pat on his head. Arms stretched out, NIGHT leaned backwards as she walked, trying to imagine how much time she'd had left in the day to continue wasting, how soon she should return home to catch a break.

It would be in DAY's best interest to return home soon, she reasoned, checking the time. Though, NIGHT corrected her thinking, her understanding of her calculations being a reflection of her own behavior registering after a second. The doppel couldn't still be out there searching for her, could they? She wondered how their expedition was going. Maybe she'd get a message from them complaining about her absence soon.

...

NIGHT kicked up dirt again, pushing up her fringe in annoyance. Goddammit. Being out in the wilderness alone was lonely work, sure, but it sucked that her own mind decided to revolve around her counterpart all the time. Stupid, she cursed, collecting the bit of shiny she'd accidentally revealed again. Hey, how the heck did she keep finding these caches, either?

Annoying. Cardinal could've taken the effort used to implant these around the environment into fueling a different torture device instead. Get rid of the Gemini and set in a proper boss, or something.

Was she getting close? NIGHT hoped so. Oh, maybe that was it. There was a massive gash upon the earth where there should've been rock, stone or gravel, but unfortunately what was present instead was an everlasting vanta black. The player could see spills of purple and blue, dull in colour, streaked down near the edge of this wound, and not much else after that, the matter vanishing back into the shadows.

Eerie. But not surprising. It might as well be called a canyon, or something. It's not like there were ghosts that birthed out of it, or a troupe of shadow knights trapezing their way out of the emptiness, either. No big deal. Another curiosity put to rest, then.

For kicks, NIGHT shuffled over to its edge, shoving a bit of gravel that was under her foot down into the abyss. She leaned over, watching the bits fall, until their colours merged with the black, never to be seen from again.

Farewell, great tidbits. You made a leap further than most players had.

When she turned around to leave, right under her foot was a new set of materials and eggs. Sneaky. I'll take those.

If she hadn't been careful, NIGHT thought to herself, perhaps she might've fallen from the sight of the goodies. One, misplaced step, or a toppling over on one side of her body to the other, and...

She shivered, heart racing as she stepped away from the ledge. It definitely didn't help that DAY had been on her mind for most of her isolation -- her body had felt the same fear she did when she'd been shoved off the rocky bridge, falling into the pool of lava she'd gazed into out of curiosity.

NIGHT would count herself lucky if the pit she might've fallen into had yellow eyes that stared back at her, and a cute little meow to go along with it. But it didn't, and she hadn't. She counted herself lucky anyway.

Her familiar called out to her, from her side, as she tried to pacify her worries away with the thought of kittens just like it. Did it work? Who's to say? NIGHT'd snapped out of her thinking and went back into a venting mood, spying more shambling figures off in the distance. She closed the gap, still shaking, but fervent with a desire to fight.

Ragged breaths. They didn't slow, the anxiety creeping in and staying, making itself cozy with the adrenaline and proximity to danger keeping it comfortable. NIGHT felled four of the revenants at once, Calamity Disaster being the art behind their unmaking, and took the break in combat to catch herself, steady her breathing. In, hold, out. In, hold, out.

A hand to her chest. She wished the calm would kick in faster. She'd tried being patient, and it usually never worked out well for her. Still, she clung onto hope anyway, letting Dracbane's tip rest upon the ground as she gripped her blade's hilt with a hand.

It was better not to keep her weapon at bay when there were other monsters roaming about the place, anyway.

NIGHT gulped, still struggling to keep her nerves in check. Maybe some refreshments would help; it had been quite a bit since she'd been to Tartarus. The continuous exertion was probably getting to her, by now.

A handful more revenants nearby. Perhaps she'd finish up her beatings here and head back herself. After all, NIGHT understood, she did imagine her counterpart doing so in the first place. Really, though, as a reflection of her own thoughts, perhaps she should take her own advice instead.

Focus, now. Just a little more, and she would be back to her own leisures.

It was no wonder how she managed to get in the first strike, the horde of creatures aptly lazing about, stationary, uncaring. With her initiation, they flinched at her attacks, but barely had the energy or effort to retaliate on their own. Three quick strikes, each one to a particular individual, the fourth accidentally shifting out of her range once again, and NIGHT clicked her tongue in annoyance. This scenario just seemed to be happening too frequently by now. What a nuisance. Maybe there was something out there to help with her reflexes further.

She'd try hitting them again, but by the second miss she'd gave up completely. Instead she refocused her attention to the ones she did aggravate, tearing their bodies asunder with clean cleaves, one strike nicking two of her opponents straight up. And with Dracbane's help, her health had been restored to full without qualms. When did it ever go down?

Better yet, why hadn't she noticed? NIGHT shook her head, turning back to the last opponent on the field. She should be keeping her thoughts aside and paying better attention to her enemies. That immersion of diving into her own thoughts, blocking out her surroundings and leaving it up to chance or instinct to pummel the guts of her foes? It worked effectively most times.

This time, however, she told herself with a gesture towards the lucid dreaming undead, this time she found herself outmatched with just her memorized blade work alone.

So let's refocus, okay?

Blade to her side. It was best for her to remain on the offensive, and finish it off while it was still surprised by the sudden attack, NIGHT reasoned with herself, watching the unsuspecting mob stumble about.

The player burst into a sprint, dragging Dracbane along. Under the subtle of the floor's flora, amidst the muted blues and the blacks of the barren desert, a dark bolt with a trailing light raced over to a hunched figure, glowing at its ribs, back turned towards the former. Then, NIGHT stopped, a few feet away from the monstrosity, and pulled her sword across to her other side, edge meeting the sides of the undead servant.

It hacked, letting out a strained, quiet cry, as the player followed it up with a kick, sending the mess of bones tumbling into the dirt. The light from its inflicted wound faded, and NIGHT watched the beast struggle to rise.

It would've been so easy. All she had to do was plant her sword into it, and it would've been dead by then.

Instead, her body wouldn't move right there and then. Kind of like, the world was shifting. Perspective reangled, just a tad, and that was it. Spacing out for only a few seconds, Dracbane set in the dirt, her hand upon its hilt.

She'd been so ready to strike it -- but her body felt kind of heavy, anyway. Blinking, she covered her eyes, trying to understand why she'd faltered for a second, giving up the opportune moment as the revenant managed to find its rotten footing.

One swing. Just as easily as it had shifted out of her own attack, so did NIGHT with its swipe, as she turned to the side, trying to pull Dracbane out from the ground. Was she really this exhausted already from today's activities? She had been fighting quite a fair bit. Dammit. Okay. This'll be the last one, promise.

One hard blink, and one step aside from her foe's lazy tackle towards her. Eyes open, she yanked Dracbane off the ground, before setting it alight, delivering one final blow to exterminate her measly threat. That was it for today, then. It was time to pack up and head home.

Out of curiosity, she glanced at the loot window, wondering what the last of her loot would look like.

A dungeon map. She pulled a look of disgust, closing the window with a tap. Yikes. Of course. I should've expected something like this. But no thanks.

"Nyanko, we're done for today," she called out, hearing her familiar's peppy peep as he burrowed forth from her bag, sticking his head out for a spell. "You're getting hungry already, aren't you?"

A mew. NIGHT didn't have to ask to know her kitten was hungry. He always was. More importantly, though, was her own state of weariness. She should be able to make it back to town without issues; she'd been alive this long, after all, but NIGHT was hoping she wouldn't have to face any enemies on the way back.

It was on her way back that she decided to draft a message to Bistro, figuring it was high time to let her broker know of her completed errands for today. In fact, with how often she'd left her informant in the dark, she was surprised how easily the woman had let NIGHT off with not sending back a word of confirmation after her marks had been slain. Maybe she'd just gotten used to it. Maybe NIGHT should be better at informing the broker about her status.

To: Bistro

hey im done with the banshee

also rmb the dungeon map the other day
got that sorted too
it was lame
ill try some other floors next time

i got more maps though you want them?

And, send.

NIGHT took her time to look around, half expecting her conversationalist to reply immediately, half interested in the view that Nyanko was taking in. When her head turned to look, she noticed a hint of colour and a glow behind it right at the base of a dead tree. Another collection to add to her heap.

And not too far from it, sitting atop the tree's branches was another set of items to collect, too. NIGHT shook at its bark, trying to get the items to wiggle off. Only a handful came crashing down, and she'd managed to save two of them before the rest disappeared into the ground. Oh well. You win some, you lose some.

That was when her agent's delayed response came in, and NIGHT investigated it, curiosity peaked about the wait.

To: NIGHT

There's no harm in investigating dungeons. Was this your first one?

You can trade the maps over if you want. I'm not sure if any player's interested in them, but I think I can at least ask around.

Also, if you're on Floor 10, there's another mark around the area. It's part of the new quest series that came up in a silent patch. Are you interested? You'd need to complete all of them to reap the rewards, but you could get a head start on it today.
