[ SP/F6/E3 ] A Shadow of Oneself

Quest: The Gemini

Titan had only heard the rumors of this quest. It was supposed to be the ultimate way to test a player against a vision of themselves that had truly been dark. In the guidebooks, it was recommended that the lower level players do it as quickly as possible because it was designed to increase in difficult the higher the player climbed in levels. Nothing had been written down in regard to what increased but the ambitious wannabe tank was worried about being level 9 and maybe losing to the vision of himself because of his gear and stats. He didn't hit the hardest, he hadn't had enough mitigation to do quite enough damage nor did he have any evasion. 

Luckily for him, Shield gave him a weapon that might just do the trick. Soul Piercer had enough bleed that if he held up long enough and had enough critical hits, it could very well defeat the Gemini. 

With those final thoughts, he prepared his gear for some Easter egg hunting on his way to the quest from the first level and headed for the teleportation pad within the Town of Beginnings and just with that luck he found 3 on the outskirts of the forest right before hitting the teleportation pad.

His footsteps to the pad seemed heavy and wavering as he had never been to the sixth floor yet in his entire time within Aincrad and this would be the true test if the man was capable. The azure light began to glow while on the teleportation device and with a couple of clicks and a second for them all to register and in an instant the beauty of Aincrad’s Town of Beginnings quickly transformed into a lush, dense tropical rainforest as if he had been in the Amazon. His eyes were in pure amazement at how even the light rush of breeze with a cold moisture against his face felt so real.

At the end of the teleporter were a cluster of six Easter Eggs that the man quickly picked up before deciding to take a little bit of a stroll throughout nature before settling back on finding the Gemini for his quest.

This place had been unlike anything he's ever seen before and as a kid, Titan and his family often traveled to pretty remote, tropic places for their family getaways. The Maldives, Hawaii and Tahiti hadn’t even come closer to the verdant paradise that had been created in Aincrad. “ Wow. ” was the best way for Titan to describe it as he moved off the teleporter and spotted the Easter Eggs he needed, collecting them before ducking under a large root that seemed to have a network that spanned out for miles. If he hadn’t made his shop on the second floor, there was something so alluring about this one that he would’ve wanted to make home but he chose the first floor of comfort and of ease before even adventuring. Whatever, it just meant that Titan would need to do a lot more exploring and finding spaces where he could breathe and forget that they were in a game and still feel like a semblance of their old selves.

Right under the root were Titan stopped to touch his hand against the under portion, it seemed that a single touch opened up a trap door where six eggs dropped down and as they fell onto the aspiring Tank, they simply went right inside to his inventory. “ How convenient. ” the man thought, a smile widening on his face as he pressed another hand against the root but this time it didn’t seem to have the same effect.

Titan looked up and saw the mighty birds of the jungle, the ambient noises cawing and chirping as though he had been in the Amazon itself. He was truly, truly mesmerized by everything that had been around him and he couldn’t help but hoisting himself onto the root and sitting with his legs dangling feet from the floor. He could understand why the Gemini would make this his floor, it screamed of beauty and this primal heartbeat that Titan could feel pulsating in increments. This floor felt alive and whoever designed this floor on the Cardinal team, did one hell of a job at it.

This time he spotted a huge Amazonian woman with a huge ego and glaring stare as Titan spotted two eggs near him and grabbed at them in a haste.

“ What are you doing here, little human? ” Her words bellowed loudly, a booming voice as she pointed at Titan with a menacing stare.

“ Uhh, I’m looking for The Gemini. I was told I could find him on this floor. ” He tried his best to make his voice both commanding and humble, he figured she would eat him alive if he showed any sign of tepidness or if his words came off timid.

“ You not here to fight Amazon? ” She got a little bit closer, this time extending her weapon to face Titan and the spear being feet away from his face.

“ No, here in peace. Looking only for the Gemini. ” Bringing his hands up and unarmed, the Amazon seemed to be pleased and gestured a finger for Titan to follow her. Shoot, was that close.

As Titan pushed himself off of the root and landed on the floor, he noticed six more eggs and quickly placed them in his inventory before the amazon warrior could spot him. The man himself was pretty tall but as they both walked, she simply dwarfed him and he looked more like a little pet than a fledgling adventurer. 

" I cannot stand Gemini, it want to fight me whenever it gets chance. Take it out for the day, for me. " The amazonian looked down at Titan was a fierce stare.

" Yes, I can do that for you. I'm Titan, by the way. " He offered her his name and she decided not to offer hers back to him. For Titan, that was fair enough. In a game, information was power and she seemed to be smarter than she let on.

" He's in the cave up there. Good luck, Titan. " She pointed at the peak of the waterfall which seemed to be a good fifty feet straight up if he decided he wanted to climb or a path that looked like it had been descending. Either path, it seemed like it'd be fairly difficult. " Thank you. " Titan waved the other as she left, he'd always be thankful for hospitality.

Before Titan began his ascent to the cave, he looked in his inventory and quickly switched his LIQUID LUCK PENDANT into his EYE OF HORUS, knowing that in time of battle, the accuracy would be paramount if he wanted to win. His eyes were firm and steady as he began to climb the rock wall with a fierce determination. Step after step, push after pull, Titan found the gripping that he needed and pulled himself up and forward. It took him around twenty minutes or so to work everything out that he needed to, the sharp sting of exercise still plagued his body but by the end he had made it to the time winded and tired. There was no way he'd be able to fight if he didn't take a little breather, so the man forced himself to sit on the ledge to breathe with the cave entrance only being about five feet away from him.

A whisper echoing could be heard from the cave, it seemed as though someone or something realized it had visitors.

" Guess you've been expecting someone a little less regal? " The voice seemed familiar but cocky, an air of sophistication and charm that exuded fake or inauthentic to Titan while he pulled out his spear and readied himself for battle. " Now, don't be too hasty. The joy of this for us to enjoy the fight being at the same strength, health and energy. I'd say good luck but I won't need it. " The gemini mused, laughing at its joke before it attacked Titan first quickly with a slash against the real Titan's chest with its assault spear. " You're quick on your toes, huh. I won't miss again. " The Gemini promised but not before Titan closed the gap between the two of them and struck with what seemed to be a crit in his hands, the soul terror began to glow and prompted a mesage once more before Titan quickly closed his pane and had a smug look on his face. Tita nwould lunge and strike, the bleed debuff now on and it'd only be a matter of time as it's health began to deteriorate.

Both versions of Titan's had their spears in hand and clashed like no other. Luckily, the player's tactic had been to use BLEED damage to slowly whittle his opponent away but it seemed as though with its current statistics, the Gemini clone of Titan could bully her way right through Titan with it's Mitigation being so high and the amount of damage he could do with a single hint was impressive as well. They both went at it now, their moves in exact unison with a proper counter as they swung their assault spears only to be blocked or dodged in that moment.

It seemed as they both were evenly matched in terms of raw skill and that the gemini truly could glean battle style and move sets directly off of the player of its choosings. " You won't last long, Titan. " The Gemini mused before jumping itself back to reset what had been quite the tense battle.

He had asked a couple of information brokers for some tidbits on the Gemini and all he had been able to gather was that the damn identity theif had been able to change into essentially a stronger version of whomever he had been looking at and as the person attacking began to drink consumables, he could gain buffs. The first was a paralysis for critial attacks. Titan knew of how dangerous that could be and decided to hold off for as logn as he could from trying to heal. 

The Gemini had been leaps and bounds stronger and more agile than Titan could ever imagine and so even landing attacks were difficult enough to do. The Gemini's spear began to shine with a holy red, in the same way that Titan's spear did the same when he was about to land a critical hit. 

Titan cursed and quickly slashed against the Gemini's leg before he felt the full brute force of the spear against his own body as let out a loud yell in protest. He watched as his help dropped about a quarter from a single attack, Titan would have to be even more clever if he wanted to win this battle.

His health pool seemed a little low at this point in the battle, it would have to be now or never because with another crit the lowbie aventurer would be absolutely over. Titan opened up his inventory and with an agility he had never known to exist within him before, he yanked out a STARTER HEALTH POTION and chugged it to regain 50 HP before reaching in to slice at his opponent., not able to do much as his bleed hadn't proc'd.

" Game over, Ti. " Why in the world was the Gemini grimacing over to Titan and why did he have that smug look on his face? The Gemini yanked his spear from behind him and he saw the sinister red glow once again known to be a critical and Titan did his very best to embrace it. The man jumped into the air, Titan attempted to block and defend himself but the land hit him square in the chest as Titan collaposed to the floor for the first time. A brilliant yellow shock seemed to wrap the man in electric chains, showcasing the Titan's very first ability for those who wanted to bring potions or food into the mix of battle.

The stun freaked him out a bunch, Titan couldn't lie to himself as he watched the bleed damage continue to tick against The Gemini as he seemed to come around for a little bit more. Opening up his inventory for the second time, Titan pulled out a health potion and chugged it with haste to return some of the missing health that critial hit seemed to deliver. Titan hadn't had time to focus on the pain or worry about what had been happening, he needed to focus on the task that had been right ahead of him. Pushing himself off the floor, Titan readied himself for another attack and use the angles to slice at the Gemini's elbow before feeling another attack against him, it seemed as though the Gemini had hit as well. " The faster you accept your fate, Titan. The quicker we can all move on with ourselves. You will lose and in the process, I will become you ! "

" Just shut up already, your health is dipping every second. You will not get out of this. " Titan spoke candidly and from experience, he was with the best and with that, he could and would also become the best in his own ways. His spear had come in handy with everything they had to do so far and this would be no exception. With a single hand, Titan held a very loose grip on his spear as he always liked to find tiny exposed spots on the Gemini's body for bleed damage to tick. He spotted an opening as the Gemini moved, he sliced his sword against the man's exposed mid-section before feeling another brutish attack from the Gemini that sent him flying back but luckily still on his feet. Titan drinks a health potion to keep his health up. 

Titan looked over at the Gemini's health and he had only needed to do a third more of the damage, he could win this and Titan was sure of himself for that.  " Come at me, Gemini! I'm going to finish you once and for all. " Words of courage and wisdom, Titan pushed himself up and knew that the other had much more stamina and energy to go before they found thesmelves a winner.

Luckily for Titan, the strategy he knew that had the best change of winning was to grab as much accuracy as he could and swing his weapon to hope it proc'd the bleed on the Gemini. It had been working so far, but with the gulp of his second consumable, Titan had no idea that the shade would also take on some of that as well. Both Titan's had suffered from a bit of BLEED damage as they groaned in unison from the pain. " How does the payback taste for keeping me bleeding this whole time? " The Gemini attempted to goad Titan, his features twisting into something darker and sinister as he leaped forward with a scarlet weapon, the critical hit seemed to slam Titan right in the chest causing the man to fall to the floor in some sort of paralysis causing Titan to give up attacking for this round.

Well, Titan had never expected this battle to be this close as his health dropped dangerously low from the bleed damage the Gemini had been able to get onto Titan. " Shoot, shoot, shoot. " The player usually wasn't someone to freak out or panic but this felt like something where he needed to since he wasn't sure what exactly he could do. 

His assault spear began to glow its scarlet hue once again as Titan began to activate a MAIM attack before feeling stunned in paralysis once again, knowing fully that the other's assault had paralyzed him and that with the Gemini's last blow, it brought Titan to 1 HP and ended the quest in a failure. " Never return to me, weakling. You don't deserve to be out there when you're simply not at your greatest potential. " A strong kick to the chest as it sent Titan flying into the cave wall, a single health point is what kept him from the land of the dead.

Soul Piercer had never felt heavier in his hands then it did in this moment where he had been slain by the GEMINI illusion as the monster escaped deeper into its cave while his own health bar shone in a crimson hue with a simple sliver of life energy with a debuff on that had been still ticking health away from him. With hasty movements, Titan opened up and chugged his very last starter health potion to make sure no accidents would be had in this damn cave where he fought for his live and ultimately survived the carnage. 

Embarassed hadn’t been the right word to describe how the man was feeling weak throughout every square inch of Titan’s pixelated form. The warnings were clear, that the Gemini wouldn’t be such an easy quest to deal with and every single person who told him were absolutely right.

But he would return for his own vengeance.

With nothing but a humbling experience and his breathing finally settling into his normal rhythm, Titan decided it would be time to leave the cave that would surely haunt his dreams moving forward with the very idea that there had and would always be a better version of himself simply hiding, waiting for an opportune moment to strike. It would be waiting in the silence, seething on every little mistake and misstep to push closer and closer to the forefront.

A huffed sigh escaped Titan’s lips with the rise and fall of the player’s shoulders in a steady breath. As every day felt and had been surreal, this quest would latch itself on to the man with a bit more bite than he was used to. Usually, Titan had the tendency to let things go and not let them bother him too much but this would be the one he’d have to do his best to shake off.

As the cave’s mouth made itself clear to Titan, the tiny drums of the waterfall seemed to grow exponentially in sound while the man found his way to the clearing with a face of delusion and exhaustion that most adventurers had to face at one point or another. A free hand gripping towards his assault spear holder as he put the SOUL PIERCER away for now, letting the cylinder hang loosely against his back before making it to where the hidden cave met the waterfall’s roar as gallons of water pounded against the rocky cliffs into the lake below snaking through the sixth floor in various rivers and streams.

It still felt like he’d been challenged over a week ago, finding the Easter eggs in the event and meeting the Amazonian woman with the grudge. Perhaps, she too, had felt the daunting fear of facing oneself at what seemed to be the ultimate self. Some people hated mirrors, doing everything they could to avoid their own reflection.

He could either jump down into the waterfall or climb down the face of the mountain once again. Titan hadn't the energy to do the latter and so he pushed off with a mighty leap against the rocks and began to fall until seconds later he met the chilling embrace of fresh spring water. He hadn't dared take a sip but he could feel a difference in the water quality from even his own showers back in his home in the Tower of Beginnings. Someone could have quite the lucrative business bottling this and offering it to various players. 

After idly threading water for a few minutes, Titan made his way to the rocky shores that connected the falls with the earthy roots of the sixith floor, creating a brown muck in the water but enough of a rocky shoreline to not have swimmers stuck trying to escape the mud's grasp.

Pushing himself up one foot after the other, Titan's body had been drained of desire and all he wanted to do was jump in the shower for a couple of seconds and hit his bed for the best sleep of his life. He hadn't ever experienced such an intense battle and it messed with his mind to see his own health pool deep beneath orange. He was a planner, Titan made sure he trained and overleveled himself so that the quests he still had to do wouldn't be a challenge at all.

But perhaps, that's exactly what the Gemini had been for. To show and prove that ambition and courage could make up for planning and those who simply stayed in the cerebral thoughts, could never get anywhere if all they did was theorize. 

The teleporter finally brought itself into view as Titan let out an exhasuted sigh. Sending himself back to the first floor, he'd take the most relaxing nap as soon as he could get himself out of this armor and into something a little bit more comfortable.
