Summary:Image result for dark elf

The majority of the Dark Elves in Kalanaes could care less about your visit to the town, many of them flashing you dirty looks and scowles, simply hoping that would will not talk to them. One man, however shines you a different look, one of desperation and sorrow. Unlike the others who pass by without a word, he directly approaches you and asks for your help. He claims that his wife had gone off to war against the Forest Elves on the surface, and her failure to return only hinted that she would no longer be living. The man clings on to a small string of hope, however, and asks if you could travel to the surface and search through the Queen’s Tower  to find out if she still lives, or if she perished during the fighting.

Note: Tythen, nor any of the other Dark Elves, do not know of the destruction of the Queen’s Fortress and the land around it on the floor above. They speak as though the Tower still stands tall, and that the land is not scorched from battle. Upon returning, none will believe you if you tell them of the damage done.

Outline:

  • After taking the quest from Tythen, you must travel to the surface to look for his wife, Fonsa, in the wreckage of the Queen’s Tower.
  • Players must take four (4)  posts combined exploring the wreckage, before they could start rolling to find Fonsa.
  • Players take turns rolling the LD, and will find Fonsa on a natural roll of 13+
  • Depending on the  Natural CD paired with the LD that finds her, the quest will produce different outcomes:

Now that Shield was finally back in the saddle, it was time to finish up the new battery of quests that had been released for the newer floors. He scanned through the list, frowning as he came to one. "Breaking the Chains: Part One - Search and Rescue. I remember this one from before. This is the quest where it's possible to fail even if you do everything right." He sighed, closing his menu and sitting back in his dining room chair, staring up at the ceiling. "Well, I'm gonna get to it eventually. Might as well be now." He sat up and walked through the kitchen out to his shop, turning the sign around to indicate he would be gone before heading out to Taft.

While on the way down the mountain, he drafter a post of the bulletin board of floor twenty three, informing players he was a tank seeking a DPS to run through the first part of a quest chain with him. Once posted, he doubled his speed. It was not a short walk, but it was one he was used to, and by the time he got there, he figured it would be just about prime time for players to be getting to the bulletin boards. He teleported through the plaza up to the dark elf settlement of Kalanaes. There, he waited, leaning against the high-spired building which was the center of the settlement. He kept checking his notifications as he ignored the stares and whisperers of the xenophobic NPC's of the underdark.

The busy hubbub of the crowd faded away into nothing more than slurred murmurs as Pinball trained his eyes on the bulletin board.

He hadn't heard about Shield in a long time -- which wouldn't be weird, considering Pinball's general situation, but there'd been a distinct lack of news about the frontliner for what felt like an unusual length of time. There'd been a certain immovable tank missing at the last boss fight, as well. Had he taken a break? How well connected was he with current events? Would he know about him? Did it matter? Pinball was alone. And sometimes contact with people that hated you felt better than no contact with anyone at all.

So call it a morbid curiosity. Normally, Pinball would never take up a request like that. But something else drove him as he snatched the paper from the board, whether it was curiosity, murderous intent, loneliness, or a cry for help. There was no making sense of his emotions. They stayed a tangled mess, a dark and dirty ball he rolled into the corner and tried to forget about. Pinball gave a small tug to the hood of his cloak, pulling it lower over his face. The route to Taft's teleporter was an easy dash through the city, and Pinball had the path memorized.

The Underdark was as gloomy as he remembered. It was filled with the snobbish dark elves, quietly whispering to each other as they shared their disgusted glances, all but double taking as the Player Killer brushed past them. He didn't have much time left in the Safe Zone. Pinball walked with a purpose, sticking close to the walls and always double checking for guards.

And there was no time for Pinball to prepare himself. No time for him to tidy up his messy hair or wipe the uncomfortably tired look from his eyes. With a gleaming red-orange sword at his belt and an orange cursor hovering lazily over his head, Pinball once again found himself standing face to face with Shield, one of Aincrad's top tanks, under unimaginably different circumstances than since they'd last spoken.

Searching for Materials -  ID# 144967 results: Loot: 2+8=10 [No Materials found]

Shield did not know who he expected to answer the call. At first, he did not recognize the figure that stopped in front of him, but upon stooping a little and peering into the hood, a glimmer of recognition came over him. "...Pinball?" he said, still not completely sure of what to make of the sudden appearance. "I would have to say I'm surprised on a number of levels. The last I had heard about you was a struggle two Christmases ago." He eyed the crystal but did not make any visible signs of emotion regarding it. "I'm sure we have a lot to catch up on. In the mean time, we have a quest NPC to find."

He gestured with his head and strode off through the crowd of ashen-faced elves. Soon, over their heads, Shield spotted a face that was going against the stream of traffic, stopping people, casting from side to side, overall seeming to be desperate, in a panic. It was one of the elves, though unlike the others, it did not shun the surfacers, but rather came right up to him and Pin. "Please! Please, I have nobody else to turn to! I'm-"

"Tythen, yes, and you've lost your wife in the war, I presume?"

"You have to help her, please she's all I've got left! If you don't find her alive... at... at leas-"

"Her wedding ring, you say? Of course we will!"

A quest invitation window popped up in front of Shield, and he clicked the 'Accept' button without hesitation. He gave Pinball a sidelong glance. "Little trick for skipping through unnecessary dialogue with NPC's. If you give them prompts about information they haven't yet told you, sometimes their AI thinks they have and they act like they're picking up from further in the conversation." He pressed on through the crowd, making his way to the edge of the settlement. As they left the elves behind, Shield kept his eyes out for anything out of the ordinary. "Well, it looks like you've got some tales to tell."

No visible reaction. That could mean a couple of things, couldn't it? He tried not to read too much into it, but his mind still lingered.

"Right," was all he offered by way of response, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets as he trailed the tank. Still, his eyes darted from dark alleyway to open corridor, ready to spring at a moment's notice. Getting tangled with the guards before they'd even started a quest would just impede Shield's progress -- and he wanted to avoid that. While Pinball himself didn't care too much about the quest's completion, he could do that much.

Shield breezed through the dialogue, and Pinball kept his distance, turning away when Shield made his way back to him. "I'm familiar with it," he murmured, having employed exactly that strategy to get through the Arabian Nights quests. Pinball followed along, constantly looking over his shoulder. It was like his head was on a swivel, and whether that came naturally to him or was a habit he picked up during his self-inflicted exile, he couldn't remember. Soon enough, though, the city would all but disappear behind them, and Pinball relaxed. As much as he could, anyway.

"I guess so," he replied, "though I'm not really sure where to start."

He quieted himself down, thinking, before breaking what was only a momentary silence. "Where have you been?"

Shield turned a bend and left the path entirely. Circling around a mount of rock and a the remains of a myconid colony, they came upon a rough staircase. From a distance, it would not have appeared as such, but up close it was unmistakable. "I have been... absent," he said, picking his word carefully. "Things on the front lines were divided. I and a few others went to great lengths to try to unite out efforts, but-" he gestured with his hands in a manner that indicated that the work all evaporated. "More infighting. More bickering. Got decked in the face. Figured it was time for a break."

The steps led upward, further and further, the roof of the Underdark growing larger and nearer with each flight of steps they ascended. Finally, an opening yawned in the side of the cavern wall that swallowed up the stairs, and the two players were engulfed in a narrow stone passageway, still leading steadily up. "That's the long and short of it. I needed time away from everyone and everything. What about you? What's your story?" Shield did not in particular mention the topic of the orange crystal, but any player who bore one knew that it was a constant topic of concern. Hopefully Pinball would be understanding of the concern.

Light began to grow ahead of them, and finally they made their way onto a flight that led straight into that light. They broke the surface, surrounded on all sides by ruins. "Well... better start looking, I suppose."Shield began hunting through the rubble of the elven settlement, turning over stones, inspecting the remains of nearby structures, trying to keep his eyes and ears open for some sign of their quarry.

He remembered the drama from back then. It'd been part of the reason.

"I see."

Pinball's eyes were locked ahead now as the two made good distance, walking up the staircase that led to the floor's beyond. The roof seemed to get larger and nearer with each step they took, and Pinball would have let himself fall into another silence if Shield hadn't further pressed his quetion. It was the orange cursor -- he knew it was, but a part of him was avoiding it. Pinball was trying and failing to lull himself into the idea that he could have a normal conversation with someone, like he'd used to, knowing full well it wouldn't be possible. Knowing full well that he didn't deserve it, and knowing full well that when he'd been overly awkward and shy, in the past, he'd been taking his life for granted. But that was heavier.

It took him a moment to reply, and he was quiet as they broke out of the darkness, leaving them surrounded by ruins. He would help him search, for a moment, scanning the rubble for any signs of recent traffic, though all the while he was formulating a response.

In the end, all he could come up with was to first match Shield's question with a question.

"What do you think about player killers?"

Shield nodded in response to the question, both to acknowledge the question and to show he understood the meaning behind the question. "Well, that depends on a lot of things," he said considering his response as he continued sifting through rubble. "I happen to be starting a guild with two players who who are technically player killers. I think boiling someone down to a term like that is cutting out all of the important information. There are players who have killed in self defense. There are players who killed by accident. There are players who have lost their minds because they were trapped in a goddamn video game facing life or death situations and snap under the pressure..."

He straightened up and looked back at Pinball. "Of course orange cursors and the words 'player killer' are going to scare people. They're going to raise questions. Fortunately, I'm pretty unkillable, so I'm in a unique position to be able to ask questions without fear." He returned to the search, letting Pinball have some time to process his answer. It wasn't a direct answer, but so far, not quite answering questions seemed to be what everyone was doing.

It was the best chance he was going to get. Shield couldn't kill him. He sure as hell couldn't kill Shield. And the tank didn't seem threatened by him in the slightest, showing no aggressive signs of wanting to turn him in or put him down. An opportunity. And one he didn't want to let slip through his fingers. For once, he had someone to talk to, with no emotional ties to him whatsoever. Of course, he didn't have long. His thought process was often particularly aggravating, especially to Pinball himself.

"I can sort of agree with that," he admitted. Walking down the path, Pinball knelt beside a fist-sized stone that looked out of place with the surrounding area. His eyes briefly traced his immediate surroundings before falling back to the rock in front of him. "But I also don't like how lightly people seem to treat it these days. Something forgiven so easily, even by the murderer. No thought for the victim, so long as they get their happily ever after. The same thing goes for the PK-Hunters, who like putting down the ones they deem evil without remorse. Like culling animals. And it doesn't faze them. And it's frustrating."

He flipped the stone over, and under it there was a trampled plant, growing stubbornly from a crack in the floor. What was once a pure white flower now hunched over itself gray and withered, petals flaky and crumbling in the wind. Tentatively, Pinball picked it by its stem, slowly standing at his full height. "I think anyone who kills somebody, no matter the reason: from self defense to doing it for sport..."

The plant turned to dust in his hand, and its ashes were carried away by an invisible wind.

"Is uniquely irredeemable."

Pinball tilted his head, a cold blue gaze lingering on his hand for a moment. And then he brushed his palm against his pants, and buried his fists into his jacket pockets. The teenager shook his head and started walking again, deciding that there was nothing else of interest in the area. For a certain amount of time, he was silent, pondering something. Finally, he gave it to him straight. "I killed four people because I thought it was the right thing to do. But it wasn't. I'd just been telling myself that. Every single person I've killed hadn't deserved it. They weren't even guilty of the things I'd accused them of. So it was for nothing. And it's true, what they say -- that it gets easier every time. But I still don't get it. It's not fair. It pisses me off.

"Because no matter how hard I try to forget and move on, I still see them in my sleep."

There was a lot to unpack in what Pinball had said. Not much as far as specific information, but at least a starting point. Shield took a moment to gather his thoughts and was just opening his mouth to speak when he saw something behind Pinball. He squinted, trying to make sense of it. There were creatures with red cursors picking through the ruins, making their way along a large pile of rubble that used to be an ornate building of some sort. At the far end, there was an ashen smudge of something. A person - trapped under the rubble. And the creatures were sniffing their way closer to her.

And her health bar was already deep in the red.

"Pinball! Six-o-clock! Hostiles closing in on our target!" He took off at a sprint, but he was not going to get to the fray before Pinball could. "They look focused! Can you pull an AoE? We're going to have to pull aggro fast!" His feet powered through piles of loose rubble, clambering over the mounds like his life depended on it.

And this is why this mission has a rocky success rate... damn!

And before he could really gather his bearings, Shield's sudden cry ripped his focus from him. Pinball was quicker than the tank, though he wasn't much better off when it came to his knowledge about this person they were supposed to be finding. PInball flew over mounds of rubble and decayed rock, taking in the scene in an instant. There were four mobs with red cursors approaching a figure with a yellow cursor trapped under something heavy. They'd found her.

In response to their incoherent shouts, Pinball took four wild strikes at the air in front of him, each successive swing of his sword sending rippling waves of crimson energy out towards the hostile creatures. Two of the beams struck true, one handling the slash better than the other. The unluckiest of the Beastmen would find their veins pulsing beneath their skin, an inky blackness that drained their health quicker than any other weapon he'd handled.

Unfortunately, Pinball's aim had been off, and the other two beastmen evaded, the energized projectiles impacting and sparking against the ground with heavy thuds. For the two whose hate Pinball hadn't drawn, their masked gazes were still locked onto their helpless prey.

Shield cursed under his breath seeing the two beasts who had evaded attack. Their yellow eyes stayed focused on the downed drow. There was nothing that could be done about it. He filled his chest with air and howled out with the full force of lungs. All four beastmen snapped their eyes onto the tank. What ensued was a hail of fur and claws, started off with a returned howl by one of the beasts who proceed to slash in all directions with its fore-claws, bounding one way and then the other as it slashed mercilessly about the fray.

Out of the corner of his eye, Shield saw the health of the pinned NPC tick down a fraction of its remaining hit points. Another of the beasts, its health drained by Pinball's attack, crashed into Shield and burst. The other three, though one was left in the yellow, were very much alive. Shield swore again. "Okay, new landscape to the fight." His eyes swiveled between the damaged beast and those whose health remained least harmed. "We can only afford about one more of those AoE attacks!" The inside of his head was filled with cursing now. Shield did not let himself get into these situations in quests. He was more careful than this. How had this happened? There wasn't time to kick himself. He could do that after the fight.

"Right! No gambling on status effects! AoE for as much raw damage as you can!" There was one beast that would hopefully be dropped in that attack. Shield threw out his sword arm to the side, focusing with all of this willpower on the tip of the sword where a ball of red light began to gather. "I'm going to try to sharpen you, but if that goes south, I might just have to parry an attack to try to get in a stun!"

Only one more of those AoEs? The axe had sliced through Pinball's side unexpectedly, leaving a bright red gash along his torso, and having him reel away from the whirling dirvish of a beastman to avoid any more unfortunate scrapes. However, Shield and the pinned dark elf also took the blows, and there was a much more formidable drop in the NPC's healthbar than there was in the two former frontliners'.

Wasting no time, Pinball put his faith in Shield as he Quick Changed into Cold Fervor, his sword flashing before extending into the icy polearm in an instant. Lashing out with wicked white-hot energy, Pinball's spear cut through two of the beastmen once more, leaving the pair on death's door. They still looked ready and eager to fight, however, frothing at the mouths and looking wildly between Shield, Pinball, and Fonsa, their original target. The teen took a steadying step backwards, gripping his weapon tightly in both hands.

The further into the fight they dragged, the less Shield liked the situation. Pin had done what he could, but all of the mobs were still standing. More than one stray attack, and Fonsa would be done for. He swore under his breath again, this time with more volume and rasp to his voice. The first beast, which had swung wildly and marked each of its targets, lunged at Shield. It slashed, and then reeled back, clawing at its arms which were now riddled with cuts and scrapes. The next, much to Shield's dismay, let out a bloodcurdling howl and did just as its kin had done mere moments before. It struck out madly in all directions, tagging Shield, Pinball, and, regrettably, Fonsa.

Her health slipped further into the red.

Shield tossed the red light from his Sharpness skill to Pinball. It was a fruitless attempt. They were all one hit from death. While one of them would surely perish from its wounds, the other two would need to be brought down by Pinball, or else insane luck at the hand of Shield's armor. Neither player was speaking to one another. They knew the predicament they were in. There wasn't anything else they could do but push ahead.

The beastmen were practically on the ropes, but so were Pinball and Shield. If they weren't so inclined to swinging their axes around in almost cartoonish arcs and instead focused on Shield, it wouldn't be much of an issue. In fact, Pinball figured the quest would have been finished relatively quickly. But that wasn't the case, and that wasn't the situation. As their weapons spun out, striking each of them again in turn, Fonsa's health dipped into the red.

Spurred on by Shield's Sharpen, Pinball threw himself out again, but was very pissed to find that his movements were sloppy. He should have had them all, but one of the mobs danced just barely out of the way of his spear strike as he passed, although his comrades both still succumbed to a particularly frigid demise. Cursing himself, Pinball snapped back into position, readjusting his grip on his weapon. He might not care about the quest, but Shield did, and even though Pinball wasn't a typical burst-DPS at this point, he found himself falling back into his old role, like when he'd alongside Hestia.

Crazed Beastman attack vs. Shield - ID# 146087 results: MOB: 3+1=4 - Miss

The tides of the battle were finally turning. While there was still a monster standing, it was slowly being drained of its health by the slow venom of Shield's armor. It did not seem to be enough to kill it, but it would get close. All it would take was one more prick of thorns, and the fight would be over. Still, it was impossible at this point to rule out the possibility of another wild, swinging attack. Shield slowly strafed around the perimeter of the beastman's range, putting himself between it and Fonsa. Still, when it came down to it, there was no guarantee he would be able to block it.

"That's it! We're not out of the woods, but we've got some hope!" It was true that Shield was taking this quest seriously. He did not like having failures stop him from further opportunities. In short, he was a completion gamer. "Think you can manage one more? I'll drop him the next time he hits me wrong, but..." his head turned slightly, glancing back at the dying NPC"I'd rather not take the risk..."

Could he handle one more?

The beastmen were, for lack of a better term, slippery bastards, it would seem, whirling around and swinging their nasty axes around a rather morbid dance floor. Through a combination of what Pinball would excuse as him being rusty with the spear, and the weird, disjointed way they moved, they were a lot more evasive than they had any right to be. And the whole fight, their attention had been locked onto that dying, soon-to-be-dead NPC trapped under a pile of rublle.

So golly gee, he sure hoped so.

But that hesitation would be short lived as his Sword Art obliterated the final monster, its body vanishing with its depleted and shattered healthbar. Pinball gave his weapon a quick twirl, looking back over to Shield -- and mainly, of course, at the NPC who just barely survived the encounter. Pinball didn't make a move for them, though instead, glancing back over at what served as their battlefield thoughtfully.

Searching Post 3/4

  1. Must role play taking the quest from Tythen  in the Underdark.
  2. Players must roll the LD to find Fonsa, and pair with the CD to find the result (4/4 posts searching before roll, need LD: 13+)
  3. If the roll requires it, players must fight off 2 Beastmen x players in party before being able to return to the Underdark.
  4. If Fonsa is killed/has died, bring back her wedding ring as proof that she is no longer alive.

Shield breathed a sigh of relief, shouldering his shield and jogging over to the rubble to extricate the NPC"Thank you," he said over his shoulder to Pinball. He gripped the piece of stone that was directly on top of Fonsa and lifted. It began to move a little, but not enough to free the NPC. He heaved and strained, but if there was a strength requirement, it was higher than his own stats could handle. He let down the load as gently as he could and went down to one knee, breathing hard.

"Well, they're certainly not making this quest easy," he panted. He looked at Fonsa's health bar. Fortunately, it was holding steady. "Good. She's not dying..." he shook his head. "I think this is a two-player job, Pinball." He turned his eyes back to the other player, watching him expectantly. The young man had been hard to read in the brief time they had spent, but now that the pressure of the combat was done, he could focus a little more on the matter at hand.

There's someone here who feels like a lost soul. I wonder what exactly happened... There will be time to talk about it but for now, we need some time to pass. He needs a chance to feel normal.

"Yeah," he mumbled in reply, not too sure why he was being thanked. For killing the mobs, maybe-? But that was just why he was here, anyway, wasn't it? Shield had moved towards the NPC, his aim to try and dig her out of the rubble, but for as much as he heaved and panted, he had no such luck. Shield called out to him that it might just be a two player job, inviting him to come and help with the extraction of the drow.

"Sure," he said, begrudgingly moving to stand beside Shield. The lady trapped under the slabs of stone was strangely still -- less of a person, and more of reflection of her status as a quest goal. A marker, and not anything like the Dark Elf Council. If this NPC possessed hyper-intelligence, she certainly didn't show that in the way she presented herself. There wasn't even complaining, and it made him wonder if she was actually unconscious.

"One, two, three," he murmured, and at that third count he'd pull the bricks off with Shield's help. With any luck, they wouldn't have trouble removing the worst of it, and Pinball would take a few steps back to let Shield handle the rest of it. He generally gave off the impression that he knew what to expect with this quest, and it wasn't Pinball's job to intrude. As far as he knew, his job was over here. Now he'd just wait for that confirmation.

The rubble surrounding Fonsa shifted as the two players lifted, fragments and stone  dust falling through new gaps and back-filling in the empty space that appeared as the stone slab lifted that had pinned Fonsa in place. Once they had successfully opened enough space for the NPC to free herself, suddenly, she gasped, her eyes snapping open. The frail elf clawed her way forward until she was free of the debris, and she slowly stumbled to her feet.

"Thank you," she gasped, her dust-smeared features reading of exhaustion, but also gratitude, or as much as she was able to show in her state. "I don't know how long I've been here, but I need to get back to my husband. His name is-"

"Tethyn," Shield cut her off. "Yes, he sent us to get you. Let's go." He turned and began to walk back the way from which they had come. Taking a few steps, he paused, glancing back at Pinball. "Are you coming? We don't want to miss out on the quest experience." He motioned for the younger player to follow and turned to keep his eye on Fonsa.

Moving awfully nimbly now for someone who just had her legs pinned under half a ton of stone... Gotta love the continuity.

Quest experience? Truth be told, he didn't care. But he'd stick around for it before he disappeared. "Sure."

On the walk back to the underdark, Pinball would be quiet. The drow would move nimbly through the ruins, though there must have been something in her programming that kept her close to them. If they stopped, she would, too, but otherwise they'd move at a brisk pace. Silently. His hands in his pockets and his sword returned to its scabbard, Pinball's face was downcast and as gloomy as always. There were other things on his mind, now. Like whether or not coming here had been a waste of time. Why had he even thought meeting up with Shield would have been a good idea, again?

But as the underground city opened up in front of them, Pinball would finally lift his chin. He'd get the experience as long as he was within a certain radius, he knew. He started to get antsy as Fonsa led them to what he could only assume would be where her husband was staying. But Pinball wouldn't be sticking around to find out. Not really.

"See ya, Shield," he'd murmur, before darting off into cover, away from the guards he noticed meandering towards them in the distance.
