[PP|04]Dragon Hunter Yuki! pt. 4 <<DHA4: Diamond Hatchling>> ft. Pin

Recommended Posts

On floor four again this week. Crow and her had been able to defeat the massive golem that was on the top of that mountain. He had told her that she was the one who did most of the work during the Cerberus quest, while he did everything for that ice golem. She only hit it once and he destroyed it. It would be nice if that boy started to see more in himself. He didn't want to believe he was as strong as he is, and she needed to help him see it.

The dragon on this floor was a doozie. With critical attacks, it would be able to freeze people in place, making evasion completely non-existent. That didn't matter for her though she could easily tank this bosses damage and kill it. Though, she was wondering if anyone would want to join her for it. Crow was resting after the Deforestation quest they did, so best not to ask him to come. It would be nice to quest with Mari again, but she tried her best to avoid bugging the orange player. Life had been missing for a while, but as far as she knew, he probably just went into a little reclusive hiding to avoid others for awhile. That left only players who were too low a level to do this quest. Welp, solo time it is. Maybe she'll actually use these beginner potions finally. She walked out of the safe zone and towards the dragon spawn point.

He didn't know why he kept coming back to this floor.

It felt like whenever he did, his presence was the harbinger of something dark and horrible. The biting cold felt familiar on his skin as he trudged through the snow, the collar of his jacket pulled tight around his neck but doing nothing to warm him. Pinball had accepted a quest, again, not knowing how else to spend his spare time -- a quest line he'd long since neglected. But the walk to the spawn area was a daunting one, and he'd ended up with more time to think than to fight and get his mind off things. A straight shot through a forest pass and up one of the smaller mountains, Pinball would likely be there in just under twenty minutes, at his slow pace.

And maybe he wasn't the harbinger of those horrible things that seemed to happen here. Maybe he was the one who personally brought those things unto others.

Yuki paused just before the quest area. She wanted to check the stats on everything before she entered battle. Knowledge and experience were the keys to victory for a soloing tank. It's damage couldn't surpass her mitigation enough before it killed her since she three times as much more health points than the boss did. She did lack in the damage department, as always. With a mixture of thorns and sword arts with a slight bleed she could easily manage killing this thing. It would just...take awhile.

Her ears perked as she heard the sound of footsteps crunching the snow behind her, slowly. They were distant, but approaching. The girl expected a lower level player looking for some good experience from the dragon, but when she turned to greet them, she instantly noticed the orange crystal floating above his head. A PKer out here? Were they here for her? No, it was like with Hidden. Perhaps this was just a quest he had yet to complete and was looking to get it out of the way. Yuki's concern for the orange crystal faded with a friendly smile. "Oi! You here to take on the dragon too? Ore wa Yuki. Yoroshikune."

Someone was ahead of him. Their silhouette grayed by the constant snowfall, Pinball decided before he'd even caught up to the player that he wasn't going to interact with them. And if all went well, they'd take the hint. Encountering an orange player out in the wild, alone, wasn't really the ideal situation for most people.

Unfortunately for Pinball, it seemed he had a penchant for attracting those who wouldn't be considered most people.

A young pink-haired girl approached him with a peppy, unusual way of speaking. They seemed friendly enough, but that was more than he could handle. Pinball looked down towards her, cold blue eyes devoid of any similar mirth. "Dragon? No," he lied, and without missing a beat, he kept walking down the path. There was no change of pace, no sudden alterations in the direction he was travelling. It was a flippant dismissal as he blatantly made his way towards where the Fourth Floor's dragon hatchling spawned.

She stood there in disbelief. No one in Aincrad had shrugged her off like that before. Everyone that she had met opened up to her a little but this man just gave her one of the coldest stares she may have ever seen. When she snapped out of her shocked state she turned around and watch him walk into the spawn area. Regardless if he was here for the dragon or not, Yuki wasn't going to wait on the damn thing to respawn.

She rushed in behind him, not really saying anything, as the dragon began to materialize. She knew it would probably attack right off the start so if she got in and blocked an attack for him, maybe he would lighten up a bit. As soon as it spawned, she could see it rearing it's head back to freeze the boy.

"A-Abunai!" Out of desperation, or whatever feeling she was feeling, the girl recklessly jumped in front of the boy holding up her lance to protect him from the brunt of the attack and getting completely frozen in place. Looks like she wouldn't be doing anything for a moment.

She followed him, but he gave little acknowledgement as to whether or not he noticed. He did, of course, but his eyes remained locked dead ahead. A part of him thought that if he ignored her for long enough, she'd either attack him or stop bothering him and leave. Whichever of the two it turned out to be, it would mean he could get back to doing what he needed to be doing.

Surprisingly enough, however, Pinball recoiled as the dragon materialized right before him. The teen hadn't been prepared for its sudden appearance, and as he drew his sword, the pink-haired girl ran forward and took the dragon's frosty breath attack in his place. It completely froze her solid, but her HP was still in a good place. The dragon's, though...?

As Icefyre, the white dragon hatchling flew back into the air, diving towards Pinball, his sword flashed a bright blue as he spun it in his palm. It elongated, thinned out, and became his other weapon, Cold Fervor. Pinball unleashed a quick, devastatingly precise flurry of blows, and the dragonling promptly turned to dust as it succumbed to an onslaught of purple energy, solid ice, and foggy shadow.

Pinball turned to the girl encased in a thin layer of ice, planting the butt of his polearm into the snow and putting his weight on it. Pitch black miasma swirled around his weapon and ran up his forearm, to where it looked like he was nearly half-covered in an inky, tangible darkness. He tilted his head, looking her up and down. She'd thrown herself into a monster's attack to try and protect a Player Killer? He exhaled, bringing his finger up to her forehead. He was going to regret this, wasn't he? Pinball knew from the Freeze effect on his weapon, that an attack would shatter the ice.

So, after a brief pause, he gave the girl a quick flick. All at once the ice encasing her would shatter, falling to her feet in chunks before immediately fading away.

Though it wasn't necessary in a digital world, Yuki found not being able to breath a weird and awful experience. The last time this had happened to her, it was only her lower half that was affected by the freeze. The girl coughed a fit as she was able to breathe again. The dragon was already dead, but it was probably better that she was the one who had been frozen, since she wouldn't do near enough damage to even inconvenience the giant lizard with wings.

Her eyes met the boy's gaze once again. She was still trying to fix her breathing, even though it wasn't necessary. The light-pink iris of her eyes staring into his cold, feelingless stare would have scared Yuki if she had not already met several orange players who have warmed up to her before. A few seconds went by before she actually got any words out of her mouth. When she was able to say something, the only thing that did come out was "What? Is there something on my face?"

Pinball looked at her for another moment. Something on her face? What was with this girl and her strangely carefree attitude? Did she not understand the situation she was in? Did she not care? She'd been frozen easily, and the dent the tiny dragon had made in her health had shown him her level must have been significantly lower than his. But she seemed unfazed to be hanging around a Player Killer she'd gotten frozen for.

He sighed. "No, nothing." People were weird.

The teenager would turn away from her, showing her his back as he scrolled through his inventory. In a flash of light his spear was unequipped, once more replaced by his almost glowing red-orange sword. He sheathed the weapon in a matching crimson scabbard that'd materialized on his waist, then looked back over his shoulder.

"Thanks for the help." His bland and uninspired voice rang out firmly, but there was the slightest hint of sarcasm in his tone. With a dismissive wave, he started trudging towards the tree-line, placing his hands softly in his jacket pockets. "Be careful on your way back."

Yuki stood still for a moment. True she really had no further reason to bug him with her problems but she could see he was troubled with something. Her urge to help was overpowering her reason.

"Hey- wait." The paladin called out without a follow up in mind, Her white boots demolished the snow underneath her feet as she closed in on him. "Thank you for freeing me from the ice and killing the dragon." She choked out when she couldn't figure anything to reply with. It would make sense that he was heading back to the next floor to fight the 5th of the dragons in the quest line right?

"Are you heading for the stairs to floor five to do the next dragon? I was going to go there if I could get a friend to come along, but would you be willing to come with me instead? You're really strong, and I wouldn't last long against the next one."

She was following him. Again.

He'd half-expected it to happen, honestly, but living that moment was more annoying than just being prepared for the possibility. What could he even do? Attack her and try to drive her off? No, probably not. That wouldn't sit well on his conscience right now, though he'd absolutely done worse before. Yell at her? Pinball didn't really think he had the energy in him. The way she'd thrown herself in front of the dragon told him that she was either not the brightest player he'd come across, or a tank, and someone who didn't know who he was at that. For someone with a name as notorious as his, he almost had a penchant for attracting the easily killable.

"You could get a friend to go along with you," he dryly mumbled, "but I'm not sure how long you'd last at the end of the quest line. Make sure to bring potions to help."

And he kept walking. Trying to shut her out was probably the best course of action here, considering.

The pink paladin slowed down a little, letting him get ahead of her. The man was cold, he emanated that very feeling around him like a blizzard of feelings blocking anything that tried to enter. Mari wasn't like this: She was upset with what she had done in the past, but it didn't go so far as to shut everyone out from her life. Hidden wasn't like this: Hidden was doing her best to survive and complete her goal of eliminating the Laughing Coffin guild. She did it all alone to ensure the safety of others though she wouldn't say that she actually cared for anyone.

Pinball was suffering from something, surely. Something that had really affected him. Was there any goal he really had in mind? Yuki was awful at judging people's true feelings, so she wouldn't find out unless she asked.

"You're suffering from something dreadful. I'm guessing you have your reasons to be so closed. You shouldn't let things like this destroy you inside. Talk with someone about it. Find someone who will listen."

Words of sympathy, now?

It took all he had to not outwardly cringe as she spoke to him, her voice carrying the slightest tones of empathy. She really thought she was being honest, didn't she? Helpful? Pinball rolled his eyes, looking back down towards her with that same frigid expression. Find someone to talk to? Someone to listen to him? Fat chance. He wasn't going to get to rest until he finished doing what he had to do, and even then, he'd make sure he didn't relax long. There was too much out to kill him, too many things he'd done that'd marked him irredeemable. Any killer who thought they could 'get better' were fooling themselves. Take the quest, justify the act with excuses, hate what you did and never do it again -- it didn't matter. It didn't change the fact that you stole a life and had absolutely no right to. It was a hole you dug for yourself, one you couldn't climb back out of. Ever. No matter how far you ran, how hard you tried to hide within the depths of your own crumbling and pathetic mind. That crime would always be there. And there was no changing that.

"No. I'm not suffering from anything, thanks, and I don't need anyone to listen to me complain about anything."

Then, as sarcastically as he could muster, he added, "But I appreciate the concern."

The paladin's expression grew strained as Pinball turned and continued on his way. She was doing her best to reach out to him and he was only spitting in her face. She had faith in someone like Mari, who she knew killed several people, but she knew that Mari was redeemable. Even someone like Hidden was redeemable, so without a doubt, so was this boy. The girl brandished her giant lance and rushed at the boy.

Her footsteps coming at him must have been too much of a give away. She swung the enormous lance to no effect, the boy weaving out of the way without even really looking at her attack. She tripped over a lose rock in the snow and ate the white blanket in front of her, but quickly got up. She stared the boy down with a serious face, like she was actually looking to fight him now. Her lance dwarfed her size, but somehow she was able to hold it one hand, pointing it at him.

Yuki misses Pinball with a Basic Attack!

The rapidly approaching crunch of footfalls in the snow gave Pinball the oppurtunity to whirl out of the way of the attack. Easily sliding to the side as the lance stabbed at the air he'd just been standing in a moment before, his sword was drawn in an instant. Shadows leapt from the jar he wore tied to his waist, crawling up his torso and enveloping his weapon in a dark, swirling black aura. He watched as she stumbled over a rock and scrambling to get up, gliding across the snow with a darkened expression. The look in her eyes made it clear she wanted to fight him. Why?

His form flickered, digital errors on his person. He'd activated Disguise, and launched himself forward towards her. She'd be seeing double, and then he'd be on her, as he froze in place with Jack's Hellfire planted delicately across the side of her throat. But he didn't move after that.

She hadn't done anything that warranted being killed. He knew he could do it. It'd be so easy -- a Sneak Attack, and a Quick Changed Dimension Stampede would be enough to do it, he figured. Pinball grit his teeth. But her only crime was being annoying. And that wasn't really a crime at all, was it? He wasn't going to make that mistake again.

Sighing, he righted himself and sheathed his weapon... only to deliver a swift, sweeping kick across the back of her legs, hopefully dropping her to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Hit or miss, he'd casually slide over to the base of a nearby tree, leaning his back against it and folding his arms.

"You're really stubborn, you know that-?"

The girl struggled to gulp down the saliva building in her mouth as the his blade was basically cutting her throat. Any movement would surely cause it to prick her body, and it didn't look like a pleasant blade to be hit by. Was this a bad idea after all? She knew not every orange player was going to be redeemable, but in both Mari and Hidden's cases she thought they were. Why should she treat this boy any different than those two?

The blade was pressured off her neck, allowing her to breathe easy again. She wasn't done yet though. "You've got that orange cursor for a reason, I'm aware of that, but you aren't an animal. You're just as much a human being as any other player in this unfair game of hopelessness. Letting another person shoulder your problems with you, or by just understanding that everyone makes mistakes if part of being human. I'll beat that sense into you if I have to!"

The girl reared her lance back again, making sure not to use a sword art, and rushed into another attack, only meeting the tree that Pinball leaned against. He was gone again, swifter than the wind. She growled at her absolutely awful accuracy and turned to meet his gaze again. "I won't sit here and leave a person to suffer on past mistakes."

More unjustified sympathy, pouring from her mouth and drowning him in promises and assurances that wouldn't turn out to be true. That couldn't be. He'd had the same argument with himself time and time again. But in the end, he'd just been trying to justify the things he'd done. But that was in the past. He'd been in denial. And now, with Yuki, it was almost like he was back to square one, and his rampant thoughts were given human form.

"Past mistakes," he murmured, swiftly sidestepping the lance swung in his direction. It was all but confirmed that she was supposed to be a Tank. With the clunky armor and the unwieldy way she used her lance, the truth was as clear as day. This was someone who took hits,  not dished them out. "What do you know about past mistakes?"

Pinball walked a few steps around and to the side of her. "Zomekko."

Shadow poured from the jar on his waist, this time not to coil itself around his weapon, but to envelop his form in a wreath of black flames. It ate away at the mesh of his avatar, and his figure blurred, distorted, flickering in and out of stealth. He would all but vanish, but his Stealth Rating was abysmal due to the tiny bit of effort he'd put into it. Anyone with a good eye would be able to find him. But there was really only one way to drive his point home, wasn't there? If what she wanted was a fight, than Pinball would accentuate the disparity between them.

Because Pinball wasn't made to swiftly take out mobs with huge bursts of damage like a traditional DPS would. He was built to be slippery and evasive, wittling away at an opponent's HP over time. His voice carried away by the wind, Pinball would sulk just a few feet away from the girl.

"I really hope I'm the first Player Killer you pursued like this."

The girl listened quietly scanning the entire battlefield while dislodging her massive weapon from the tree. She wasn't relying so much on her eyes as she was her ears. With the snow surrounding her, it wouldn't be difficult to hear the boy creeping around her. She reached out her hand as soon as she heard the footsteps behind her and grabbed him by his shirt while he was invisible.

"You, Mari, Hidden. I will help anyone who needs it, even if that means I have to beat the [censored] out of you guys to make you understand." She tightened her grip on him, making sure that couldn't escape her until this invisibility effect wore off. "I might be crazy for trying, but I can't stand watching others suffer. You all wouldn't understand. You haven't been through the life experiences that I have. You don't think that I could be where you are, or understand you, but I could. I know Mari has killed people, but she is still a good person underneath. Hidden has done the same, but that doesn't mean they aren't redeemable. I refuse to believe that you cannot redeem yourself until you prove me otherwise!"

Hidden? Mari? Names he couldn't attach a face, but a reputation to. And they weren't good. Killers, the both of them. He'd interacted with Hidden in that one boss fight. She'd torn into Hirru without warning, stoking Pinball's latent anger, and he'd stunned her in that rage. He remembered Aereth had gotten angry with him. Another killer people were okay with. Mari, on the other hand, he'd never met before. But he'd seen the names on the monument, with her being the cause of death.

Pinball's form flickered into existence, and he stepped out of his shadowy invisibility with a much more pronounced look of annoyance. "You're being stupid."

He adjusted his grip on Jack's Hellfire. The idea of putting her down so he could be done with this whole interaction was looking more and more favorable with each passing moment. He moved closer. If she wanted to hit him, she could most certainly try again. But he wasn't trying to dodge anymore. Not in earnest.

"I don't want to hear anymore of it. They're not redeemable. Not like you think. They've killed before. They can easily do it again, and there's nothing that can change that. They did it because they liked it, or they knew they could. An epiphany isn't going to change that reality, no matter how buddy-buddy people get with them. They stole those people's lives, and that's not something you can fix or restore once it's gone." Pinball stopped dead in his tracks. He wanted to scare her. His words fell heavy into the snow, dripping with a venom. "Matter of fact -- I can prove it to you, if you'd like."

But he whirled around, angrily shaking his head. Anyone with an orange cursor was uniquely irredeemable. That was the truth of it, wasn't it? "Get out of here. Leave me alone. Go back to your murderer friends you insist aren't what they really are. And if I were you, I'd start praying you don't end up being their next little 'mistake'."

Gritting her teeth down to every single word, the paladin stayed quiet. Anyone was redeemable if they just tried. This boy was not trying. He had grown so attached to the idea that he was the villain of this world, not taking into the account of the man named Kayaba. No one in here was to blame. If this stupid game had never happened, none of them likely would have gone to this kind of life. Maybe Yuki was hopeless. Maybe she saw too much good in people and ignored the bad just so she could hope that they were redeemable. No matter what, it was becoming quite clear that she couldn't do anything for this boy in her current state.

"Y-You have a lot of balls to talk about people like you know them! Mari would never hurt another person again! H-Hidden needs some work but she is trying! Y-You! You're nothing but a monster! Believing in only evil leads to disaster and you will meet your end if you continue to wear that orange cursor like it was a goddamn noose! I'm not stupid for believing that people can all be good if they work at bettering themselves, I'm stupid for trying to put my energy into someone as irredeemable as you! If you want to live life as a target and a victim to everyone's judgement, then keep wearing that stupid orange cursor like a medal. I'm going to put my time into people that actually need it." The paladin's anger was unmatched. Her teeth basically crushing her jaw she turned and ran back to the closest safe zone. This one really was unable to be saved, wasn't he? She couldn't save everyone... But that won't stop her from trying to help everyone damned by this stupid digital world.

It didn't matter.

Pinball sheathed his Hellfire and walked past her, even as she hurled insults and accusations at his back as he made his exit. He heard every biting word, every justification and judgement as if it were his own again, and he was curled up beneath the roots of that twisted tree, cursing himself. But it didn't matter. She could villainize him all she wanted, because she was probaby right. There was no changing his mind on this. And if someone wanted to go about trying, anyway, brute force was definitely not the way to do it.

Even still. The cursor were his sins given physical form. People who took Redemption to try and cover that up were the worst of the worst. There was no erasing the things that you'd done, even if you were convinced that you could. You still did it. And you'd still be able to do it, just as easily, if you so much as changed your mind. And you had to live with that. You had to accept that as who you were.

Because everyone who had their names carved under another's on that monument - every single one of them, without exception - were uniquely irredeemable.
