The bear had been defeated. The hunting experience that followed defeating the first boss in the new quest line was absolutely horrid, but the boss itself hadn't been too difficult. Based on the information he'd gathered, the next boss wouldn't be much more difficult. And it rested within the confines of his very own home floor, no less.

Rumors spoke of a monster that devoured the souls of any other mob it came into contact with. Even its own underlings, which would aid it in its fight against the players, were not exempted from its appetite. If left unchecked, it would become the scourge of Aincrad's proverbial Hell. As a resident of the tenth floor, we felt somewhat responsible for ensuring its demise.

So he set off from his house, first thing in the morning, and blazed a path toward the river. He'd ensure this mess was cleaned up, one way or another.

Not long ago, Bahr had completed another quest on this floor. Another such scourge that plagued this floor - the Banshee. It had been Lessa who'd helped him that time, and he felt eternally grateful for it. Usually, he'd be forced to do the deed alone. With her by his side, it hadn't only been easier, but more interesting.

Since it had been vanquished this most recent time, Bahr had been able to get an ample amount of sleep. Being well rested, he felt confident that he would be capable of clearing this 'leech' and restoring the tenth floor to a peaceful state. As peaceful as Hell could be, anyways.

He knew the path well, and it wouldn't be long before he stood at the river's edge. He only hoped that it wouldn't take long to ascertain the location of the beast once he'd made it that far. He'd given himself plenty of time so that he could ensure that, should a search be necessary, the battle wouldn't spill into the night and following day.

It wouldn't be long now. He could smell the stench of death from where he stood. It was one of the telltale signs that the Stygian River was close. It was a smell not completely unlike that of New York City - the kind you could literally taste after being exposed to it for long enough. Just sprinkle in some decomposition, and you'd have a pretty good idea of what the Stygian River smelled like.

That is to say; absolutely horrid.

Finally, he'd made it. His nostrils flared as he did his best to stomach the repulsive odor of the "water" that flowed nearby. He took care not to wander too close to the river's edge, lest he fall in and find out what happens if he did. Based on lore he'd read of the River Styx, which the Stygian River seemed to reflect, he wagered nothing good could come of it. If not instant death, then a long and painful one.

It didn't take long for Bahr to find it. Or, rather, it didn't take long for it to find him

It rose from the pitch black depths without so much as a peep. Its form was completely incomprehensible; a skull of unknown origin with countless glowing eye sockets, a black cloak that seemed as liquid as it did solid, no less than four arms, and a chain of human skulls that it wore as though it were a satchel. One of them still had its skin - nose, ears, and all.

The minions that rose with it were equally as grotesque. Bahr's amygdala was firing on all cylinders, filling him with an unprecedented fear response. By the numbers, it was a weak mob. But the way it looked, the manner in which it skulked around, and the odor it emitted. Bahr knew he needed to end it sooner rather than later.

So he ran forward. Cut into the minions first, and managed to score a hit against all of them but one. And that one was scooped up by one of the arms of the Leech and devoured, whilst another arm lashed out and tried to score a hit against the Crimson Marauder. Bahr doubled back to avoid the attack, but noted that the creature increased in size as its minion slid down its gullet.

This was already beginning to spiral. If it consumed anything else, it would only continue to grow and grow and grow until Bahr couldn't keep it under control anymore. The thought of losing to such a weak creature become strong made Bahr's stomach churn, though no more than the stench was already.

He leapt forward, charged his blade, and... missed. It didn't dodge, or anything. He just flat missed. He needed to adjust his strategy while in midair, due to underestimating his jump. Had he not made last minute adjustments, he'd have jumped straight into the Stygian River.

Because he was off kilter, it wasn't difficult at all for the Lich to land a direct hit on him. Not that it did much, all things considered. His armor did a fantastic job of soaking up all the damage. But Bahr was still perturbed that he hadn't managed to simply finish the job when he should have. How long would it be before more of its minions popped up?

Not long, apparently. Two more Stygian Warriors rose from the depths not moments after he'd had the thought. He knew that they needed to be a priority, or he would never be able to bring the Lich down. So he dashed forward, sword blazing, and ripped into the trio of them.

He watched as the smoky black tendrils of Fallen sprang from the blade and infected the Leech Lich, but failed to deal any additional damage. What the hell was that about? He'd never seen anything like it. Was it immune?

Luckily, the Stygian Warriors fell without any trouble at all. The Lich, clearly upset by the death of its minions, lashed out with another firm strike. Bahr's armor soaked the damage, and all was well. For now. If things didn't go as smoothly the next time the Stygian Warriors spawned, he would be in trouble.

But there was no use focusing on that now. He needed to keep the pressure on. It was the only way he'd be rid of this pest.

So keep the pressure on, he did. He charged up his blade once more and let it loose before the wind up chime had even finalized. He didn't get anything fancy in the attack like a Fallen or Holy proc, but it was still enough to decimate the remainder of the Lich's health and cast it into oblivion. Now all that remained of the gross apparition was the cloud of crystalline blue fractals that were slowly dissipating into nothingness.

As soon as the battle had concluded, Bahr felt a wave of calm wash over him. As though he'd repelled a natural predator. The stench still lingered, but he knew now that he wouldn't become a part of it. The evil had been defeated. He only hoped that he'd be up to the task again if it ever respawned.

Though, it hadn't eaten up nearly as much of his day as he had assumed it would. He'd gotten lucky. What was he to do with the remaining hours in the day?

As he was on the way back to the house, a thought occurred to him.

Why not go spend the day with Lessa? It hadn't been long since they last spent a day together, but Bahr found himself more and more willing to commit that sort of time. Especially if he got done with the day's tasks so early. A cursory glance at the clock revealed that it wasn't even noon yet. If she were home, it would probably be a pleasant surprise to have the Crimson Marauder show up at her doorstep. Yes, that seemed like a solid plan.

But he'd need to bring something, of course. Flowers. She'd loved that the last time he did it. Flora had just about every flower he could think of - including her favorite. He'd stop off on the third floor, pick a fresh bouquet of lilacs, and then make his way to Manderly on the twenty second floor. He couldn't think of a better way to spend his afternoon.

FLOOR THREE

As soon as he materialized in Flora, his senses were assaulted with something infinitely more pleasant that the stench of death - the sweet aroma of pollinated flowers.

He took in a deep breath, and held it as though it would get him high. And, to some extent, it did. There was a certain mental cleansing aspect to this place unrivaled by the whole of the floating castle Aincrad. The fact that Bahr chose a place like the tenth floor to call home instead of a place like this constantly perplexed him. What sort of head space had he been in when he chose literal Hell as his home? Not a good one, certainly.

And there it was. Sitting in a display window was a perfect bouquet of freshly picked lilacs. Lessa would have loved them. She would love them. He strolled inside, collected the flowers, and was on his way. The twenty second floor was waiting for him.

FLOOR TWENTY-TWO

Floor twenty two looked exactly as Bahr had left it. Though, the same could be said about any other floor. It was just that this one held so much nostalgia for him.

"It's actually a really weird tradition. Historically, mistletoe was used to cure things like menstrual cramps. And y'know, the Old English word was 'misteltan,' where 'mistel' means 'dung' and 'tan’ means 'twig.' So you're kissing under the poop branch. Even the druids used to-"

It was what had happened after that moment that had created so many memories. Good ones, in an environment where they were so scarce. And he owed that to someone, along with so many other things. Flowers were a paltry offer in return for everything that she had done for him. But he had to start somewhere. She'd given him so much, and he would do everything in his power to give some of that positivity back. One gesture at a time.

The subtle breeze carried the scent of the lake along with it. Every portion of air that tickled his nostrils purged the pollen that the third floor had left behind. Intermixing with the proverbial melody of smells was that of lush leaves, damp earth, and... fish. Which was strange, but not totally out of place for a place like the twenty second floor. After all, it was the fishing hotspot for all of Aincrad - even more so than the twenty fourth.

It was smelling extremely fishy, in fact. So fishy that it was beginning to drown out all of the other beautiful scents of the floor. The abysmal stench because increasingly morose the closer Bahr drew to the trail that would lead to Manderly. It was starting to get difficult to breath through his nose, but he knew if he breathed through his mouth he would gag.

Further up on the path, a man was running toward Bahr. He seemed frightened.

"What's the matter?" Bahr asked as he grabbed the man's arm. "Did something happen?"

"There was a hidden event," the man responded. "Every fisherman on the floor fished up a monster at the same time. We're overrun."

Of course.

Bahr released the man's arm just in time to catch sight of the creatures chasing him. Dawn's Demise entered the swordsman's palm in the blink of an eye, and tore into the lot of them just as quickly.

They were resilient and struck back. Then, they struck back again. What was it with Sword Art Online and pitching unholy quantities of fish people at the players? Or was this a problem specific to Bahr? It seemed like no matter how far he went, or where he traveled, he would run into them. Fish people. Fish people everywhere. There was no escape. He would likely permanently be plagued by the smell of fish. Whether in the mobs he fought, or the stench it left on his clothes.

It was fortunate that smells in this world had a cooldown. Bahr couldn't stomach the thought of approaching Lessa smelling like this.

Dawn's Demise was performing admirably, at the very least. Inflicting impressive damage against the horde of mobs as he cleaved the over sized wedge through them once more. One more attack - maybe two? And they would be dispatched. But how many more remained on the floor? How much more would he had to endure before reaching his destination?

  • 1 month later...

And the retaliated once more. The detriment to his health was negligible, but there was no ignoring that smell. The stench of fish left out for too long. Or, really, just fish in general. Certainly, they smelled even worse when they were actually rotting, but Bahr wasn't aware of a time when fish didn't smell totally gnarly. Even cooked, there was no getting rid of that fishy smell. It was there to stay.

He was quick to respond, however, and ignited Dawn's Demise with all the same chagrin that filled his nostrils and soul. It ripped into the fishy goons and, just as Bahr had imagined they might, two of them combusted into small clouds of polygonal blue fractals instantly. There was some minor loot, which was of no use to the person who earned it. He was more concerned with the fact that, after all he'd leveled at them, there were still two alive.

Before the fish dudes could recover, Bahr charged up Dawn's Demise for another go and let it loose, ripping forth and into the mobs. One of them burst into pixels, as expected, but the other caught the blade with some sort of... gill? Fin? Whatever the hell it was poking out of the creature's forearm. It was spiky. Yeah, probably a makeshift fin. Wait, Dawn's Demise was halted by a fin?

So that's the kind of battle it was going to be, was it? Halted by a fin? Out of all of the ways Bahr had thought he might be stopped in the past, a walking fish man with fins of steel was not on his list. The unstoppable force, stopped by a mid-tier mob on a relatively peaceful floor.

Oh, the humanity.

Bahr hissed at the thing before taking a step back to put some distance between himself and it. The next attack would dispatch it. He was sure of it. Or, rather, he had to make sure of it. Nothing less would be acceptable.

Galaxy Destroyer was the ticket. While Bahr didn't have the best accuracy track record when it came to things like AoEs, Galaxy Destroyer may as well have been his Ol' Faithful. Rarely did it miss - and when it did, it was usually due to external factors. Maybe Bahr wasn't feeling well that day, or the wind was off. But it was never Galaxy Destroyer's fault, certainly. Or Bahr's, for that matter. How could something with a name so cool ever fail spontaneously? The idea was absurd.

So he let it loose and, to his delight, the creature was felled. Now nothing more than pixelated azure dust, Bahr's encounter with the wretched fish goons had come to an end, and he was free to proceed. As he sheathed Dawn's Demise, he took a quick look around the floor from his vantage point to see how many more remained. There were a few, here and there, but it seemed as though there were other players handling them at the moment.

It seemed as though the others had everything under control. The argument could have been made that Bahr had an obligation to help them clear the mobs and restore order to this beloved floor. But you know what? Screw that. He was done fighting mobs for the day.

First it was the stupid Leechy Lichy thing, which was just plain gross. All of its ads, and the way it pulsated. Yuck. That wasn't an experience he would wish on his worst enemy. Or, you know, maybe he might. The prospect of Pinball being subdued by such a creature was admittedly pleasurable. So yeah, maybe it was useful for that.

But the fish things? It wasn't that they were particularly difficult or anything. Bahr was just so done having to deal with the damn things. When would he get reprieve enough to no longer smell like fish? He couldn't remember the last time he'd gone a day without the odor invading his nostrils.

And sure, there were worse things out there. But seldom did Bahr come across anything that perturbed him to quite the same degree that these creatures did. He recalled the first event outside the walls of the Town of Beginnings that he took part in. It was literally just an entire army of fish people. That's it. Cackling at the players while greedily schlorping air through their grotesque gills. Like the mutant, scrotum faced, buck toothed, zit exploding progeny of the South, everything about them had revolted him.

And they still did. Every time he saw some variation, he felt the need to destroy it. They were not right. Not one with nature. Fish should not be able to survive on land, let alone walk. They had to be eradicated.

But in this particular instance, he was content to let them be. The other players would eliminate them soon enough. He had places to be, and things to smell like that weren't fish.

So he continued down along the trail. Around the lake. Past the fish men. And then past the other fish men. And then, believe or not, past another pack of fish men. Wow, there were a lot of them. Perhaps more than Bahr had bargained for when he contemplated letting the other players take care of them all. But he was committed to his decision now, and nothing was going to chance his mind. As he'd concluded before, he had places to be. Things to do. Things to smell like, that weren't fish.

Eventually, he found the trail that led up the slope. It was a one way ticket to Manderly, and as far as he could tell, there were no walking fish up there. Even their disgusting odor faded into memory as he slowly ascended the trail, leaving them all behind at the lake. Lessa had been smart to choose a property with the high ground - all of the rabble would typically stay down around the lake, surely.

Or at least, that was the hope. What if they were up here? What if they were attacking Manderly? What if him dealing with more of them at the lake's shore would have prevented the ones up here from attacking Manderly? If there even were any up here, that is. Wait, that wouldn't make any sense. If he were still back at the lake, he wouldn't be around up here to stop the ones advancing on Manderly. Er, that is if there were any up here, of course. And he couldn't smell anything yet, so something told him that they were in the clear. Hopefully.

Besides, even if there were fish goons attacking Manderly, Lessa would have been able to make quick work of them. Easily. She wasn't a pushover, and could handle herself and her property with perfect utility. It was one of the reasons he'd been so drawn to her in the first place. She didn't need Bahr, or anyone else, for that matter, to be self sufficient. In fact, if there were fish people up here attacking Manderly, Bahr felt bad for them. Nobody wanted to be on the receiving end of Lessa's wrath.

Ah, there it was. Finally, he was reaching the end of the trail. He saw the telltale glow of Manderly up ahead, emanating through the trees as the horizon began to devour the remaining daylight. Not a moment too soon, and not a moment too late. And he had the perfect-

Wait a second.

The lilacs! Where had they gone? Oh, he'd completely forgotten about them once fish dudes popped up. He retraced his steps in his mind trying to discern when he may have lost them, and came to the conclusion that it had to have been the exact moment he summoned his blade. He'd had them in his hand, and then that had was all at once occupied by his blade. Pity.

He'd be sure to tell her about them. The flowers he'd squandered trying to rid her precious floor of the vicious fish men. Who were... still roaming the floor.

Perhaps it would be best to come up with a better story.
