But he was sure that he would have to deal with worse things in the future should he survive that long. He passed by the field they were in for the previous, which was still inhabited by many poor souls, and he approached the nearby woods. "I think this should be it." An astute observation, given that the area was also crawling with other people. The boar pups themselves looked quite adorable, if is this were somehow the real world, there would be know way that Mao would have the heart to attack them. He had to remember that it was a game. A game with life-and-death stakes, but a game nonetheless. He took a deep breath and unsheathed his spear, muttering gibberish to himself. Mao looked around and eventually found one that was untouched. "I'm sorry, little piggy, but this has to be done." He readied his weapon skill, Pierce, and as his arm lunged forward, it was as if it had taken over his body. Mao's spear gashed through the pup's eye and it let out a high-pitched squeal before disintegrating. Vince practically appears at Mao's side, a wide smile on his face like always. "Who would've thought we'd meet again?" He seems to be standing about in a lackadaisical manner, seemingly not quite caring about what might happen today. In fact, this carefree attitude was demonstrated by the gambler just flipping his knife until one of the boarlings came closer. With the mob now slowly approaching him, Vince just mutters to himself as his body begins to follow an almost machine-like movement. Round-Accel! He circles around the mob with a single swing, then dashes up again with the second swing. The dagger sinks into the boar, with the mob practically hanging off of it as it starts to dissipate. The gambler just stares at it in disgust. Didn't really intend that to happen. He turns his head over to Mao with his look of disgust fading away into his normal smile. "I was expecting a slime for the classic beginner mob." She groaned audibly as she noticed them. As much as she wanted to turn around and leave, she was rapidly approaching the level cap for these quests and wanted to finish as many of them as possible before she lost the chance to get some easy experience. She walked past their battle field, eyeing both of them, saying only "Kon" as she stepped by. She would find her own enemies. That didn't take long. A few steps past the other two, four boars spawned simultaneously in front of her. They all rushed at her ferociously, bearing their tiny ivory tusks against her. With a flash of white light, as single swing and the boars were nothing but a mist of blue polygons. Three tusks lay neatly on the ground, which she retrieves post-haste. Once finished, she decides that it was time to head back to the blacksmith, but maybe it would be funny to watch these two struggle with their attempts to get the tusks to drop. She sat down outside the spawn area just within earshot of the two's conversation if they talked loud enough and watched. Mao saw Vince's face flash from one emotion to the next and raised an eyebrow for a moment before lowering it again as he returned to his business. Mao wasn't sure if it'd get easier to watch, but right now he just had to power through it. "It would've been nice it were actually slimes, I gotta say." Not soon after, a familiar word was uttered nearby. Mao looked around to see Fox brutally cleave through four pups, and she'd managed to get all three tusks. "Was she always that strong?" Mao asked Vince. He pointed a thumb in Fox's direction before continuing his search. As for her, he greeted her with a "Kon!" of his own. "Maybe I shoulda went AOE," he muttered. In the vicinity, Mao heard a faint oinking. He lowered his hips and moved more slowly, and behind a tree was another pup. Mao raised his spear, and with a loud "hmph!", he thrusted. Fortunately for him, he managed to land a hit but the little pup, despite it's squeals, managed to survived and retaliated quickly, lunging at Mao's legs. He bends his knees to get a running start: going through the same motion of Round Accel - until he stumbles during the first dash, watching it all go to waste. He only has himself to blame as he proceeds to get rammed into by the pup he drew aggro from. He just... frowns. Why. Why did this have to happen to him. He watches his health go down a smidge as a result. Honestly, any smart person would be completely focused, but this is something simple enough - so he turns his gaze towards Mao and Fox, smiling once again. Though he pauses for a second to formulate a response. "Well. It's entirely possible she ran off to do many other quests in order to powerlevel. A very smart strategy, might I tell you. Me? I'm taking it slow." He casually waves towards the shorty as he starts to flip his knife again, waiting for good time to strike. Of course, he does so by slowly circling the boar, thankfully not being punished by a such simple mob. They were both reckless and unfocused it seemed. You cannot be a good fighter with doubt in your heart. She decided maybe she would have to teach these guys how to play the game the way she does. "Oi, dummies, you aren't focusing on your surroundings. Vince, you tripped over a rock, pay attention to where you are putting your feet and make not of your enemies position at every moment. Wait for it to jump at you then show it the manner of it's mistake. Mao, don't doubt your weapon. Any weapon is strong, what matters is the heart of the wielder. You will unlock area of effects with a few a more levels of rank in the skill. Make your weapon one that enemies will fear." "Yeah, maybe. But even then...," he trailed off. It seemed unusually fast, but it also seemed like Fox actually knew her stuff so it was best not to question it, and he wasn't exactly in a position to worry about it, either. Mao did the best that he could to soak in Fox's advice given that it was on short notice. As his body reeled from the tackle of the pup, sank his feet into the ground and took a deep breath. Again, Mao could feel himself lose control of his body as his sword art took over. His spear launched forward and pierced the little pup straight between the eyes, its body disintegrated instantly and leaving behind a tusk. He knelt down to grab the loot. [This still feels pretty bad but Fox really does know her stuff. Normally, he'd take others' advice with a grain of salt, but this is his first rodeo in virtual reality - he's not used to actually doing the work himself... So he'll listen. The gambler immediately shifts his posture, equally putting weight on both his feet as he prepares for anything. It seems that the pup is rearing up a charge! He lets the boar charge and prepares to dodge it - then the impulsiveness in his head decides that a change of plans is much more preferable. Bracing for impact - Damn, that hurts a bit! - he drives the dagger into the boar and throws it over his head! It seems like he had put himself on much better footing now for this light skirmish. Now, keep track of its movement. This isn't like any other game you've played, Vincey. However, it definitely does look like he can just throw a pebble at it and kill it... Regardless, better to be safe than sorry. He starts to scan the area through his peripherals, continuing to circle the pup again. This is honestly quite exciting! Except for, well, the fact that he's kind of stuck here and can potentially die. Or does that make it more exciting? One of life's greatest conundrums. "You've still got to get too more each. I can't help you guys do it, so you need to be strong on your own, learn to fight for something you believe in and always come out on top. Trample anything that tries to snuff out your desires and make your wants and needs recognized." Spoken like a true Yokai. This persona was really starting to fit her liking, and she would continue it. She didn't think she would be teaching noobies like this an MMO video game, but it felt better than she imagined. Probably because she was allowed to yell at them and they couldn't say much back at her. Yeah, most likely that. "Get ready! There are more coming! Kaliot wasn't sure if that was actually true but it certainly felt like it was. Fox seemed almost like a different person, but he wasn't complaining. Fox called out that more were coming, but Kaliot didn't see from where. He turned around too late and was met with the sight of two boar pups charging at him. The first lunged at him, but he collected himself quick enough to get off Pierce just in time to impale the little thing while it was midair. It disintegrated and DING!, it dropped the last tusk that he needed. The second boar pup tried to follow up with a lunge of its own, but Kaliot managed to sidestep the attack and get into a readied stance. "Thanks for the call-out, Fox! I'm all good over here," Mao said aloud. Lo and behold, there is Vince crumpled on the ground as he looks rather incensed. With a puff of air, he swings back up onto stable footing as he brushes off the dirt on his clothing. Thankfully, the boar seemed to have hesitated as well on charging the gambler - seemingly licking its wounds per se. Anything good I've earned has all gone away in that single moment. While he's at it, might as well wipe away at his blade to cleanse it for now. Once again, the boar and gambler stare off at each other. Waiting. This is kind of pathetic actually, but sometimes that's how the game is played- You know, maybe he should've gotten better gear. This is practically the same thing with the previous quest except this time he's actually hitting something instead of trying to gather something. The lack of foresight has screwed him here a bit. She waved him over to join her, after all he had already hit his limit for the quest item, and once you hit your limit they would stop dropping, meaning he couldn't help Vince if he wanted to. Vince on the other hand was having trouble getting those last two tusks. Dagger users have it rough since they were limited on area of effect, but there was also the benefit of having more energy to continue the fight out, she wondered why he was hesitant to activate sword arts. They were, after all, how most of the damage is done in this game, she would be puny if she couldn't use any of her sword arts. "Oi, dummy! Use some sword arts, you'll kill it in a single hit if you do that. Sword arts are essential to the game, you have to learn how to perfect them!" He wanted to get this last pup off his back and he wanted to help Vince so Kaliot decided that now seemed like a good time as any other to test out the <Switch> mechanic. He squared up with the little pup which was revving up its hooves by digging into the ground. "Mano y mano, little guy." Kaliot took a deep breath for lunging forward, hitting the boar pup off center as it attempted to dodge his attack. The pup retaliated by charging at his legs, forcing him to step back. "Hey hey, I know you're pissed but kindly cut that out, please." The irony of having just stabbed it was not lost on him. "Hey Vince, care to <Switch> with me? Vince would've gotten another hit in if the boar pup didn't start to back up on itself. He's struggling to keep that smile on - this should NOT be that difficult. But here we are, with what is practically a Mexican standoff. Maybe he should figure something out about throwing things, that'd be great - don't really have to worry about missing. The gambler glances over at Mao, scanning the situation. He just frowns. "And no, it's a starter mob - deal with it. Hell, you have some form of armor! Look at me!" And is he wrong? It's just a measly boar pup. They have more than enough health to tank the little damage they do. Plus, he has a [censored] dagger! What is he gonna do, prison shank someone - well actually, he can do that very well actually. Nonetheless, not worth switching over. Vince was loosing his [censored], but at least he was taking the time to voice his opinion. He could be strong with that attitude, but he would have to focus enough to keep his mind on the battle. If he didn't, the boar was going to knock him around forever. The Megitsune took up her scythe and set her eyes on the boar focused on Mao. She rushed in and stabbed the scythe into the ground, barely missing the boar with her basic attack. Misses happen. She could use this. "Vince, you need to calm yourself. Even an experienced play misses attacks and messes up. The reason I look so much stronger to you two is because my gear severely outclasses yours right now. When you are done here, you must return to the city and ask a shop merchant to make you some equipment. Once you have that, you'll do more damage and miss less often. Remember what I just: Focus on your fight. He'd wanted to get Vince the hit since it was pretty pointless for Kaliot to kill any more of them. Just then, Fox jumped in to get the kill, barely missing as the boar pup frantically moved about area. "Is that so?" Kaliot said. Fox was right, but he was sure that there was more to it than just gear; regardless, better equipment would eat up most of the distance between them. "I guess I gotta make another trip out on the town after this, huh." Luckily for him, he had mapped out the layout town when he was looking for his trinket and already had a good idea of where to go. "My turn to miss." Kaliot watched as the pup darted around, sometimes inadvertently using Fox as a shield. He tried to steady his aim before thrusting his spear, but it didn't help as the pup sudden change in direction sent it sailing past. The little guy used the miss as an opportunity to attack, charging toward Kaliot, but it too failed to land anything. He'll be juuuuust fine. Almost as if karma is biting back at him, Vince barely misses a stab at the boar when it charged at him. Thankfully, he's not so bad at dodging and hitting at the same time - he's definitely going for better equipment soon, this is the opposite of fun - and Vince hits the dirt and rolls off it into a combat position, fully prepared for the next bit of the fight. Perhaps trying to cheese easy experience in the first few hours of a death game wasn't the greatest idea, but a lesson learned for next time. The green haired gambler glances over at the two on the other side of him. Huh. They seem like they're having a great time. Now that he thinks about it, he can't help but chuckle even louder. "You know, I didn't really expect boar pups to be this slippery!" He starts to circle the boar again, waiting for a more opportune moment to strike - he'll need to be a bit more conservative for this now. She turns around and takes off her porcelain mask, another one forming in her other hand and replacing it. As she walked over to Vince, she gave the boar a hearty kick in the face, knocking it one its back. The swine struggled to save its situations, swaying around savagely. "I want this back when you're done. Just move it into one of your inventory slots. You don't have to actually wear it on your face, and honestly I would prefer it if you didn't." The girl handed over her kitsune mask to Vince, opening the trade window and accepting the trade. "If I don't see that mask again, I'll be pretty upset." The grip her lance tightened as if she already knew what she was going to do if he didn't return the porcelain mask to the girl. Which was fine since the pup no longer had a human shield to work with. "Mano y mano...again." Kaliot readied his spear. The boar pup stomped its tiny hooves. The both started to circle each other like gladiators in an arena. Kaliot broke the standoff. He charged forward and threw a swipe at the pup, a move which caught it by surprise as it seemed to have been anticipating another jab as it dodged into the attack. The swipe nailed the pup square in its side and sent it flying into a nearby tree before disintegrating. "Now that that's over," Kaliot said as he took a seat against another nearby tree, "I can relax for a bit." He took the time to stretch. "Thank you for offering such a gift, I'll make good use of it until I finally clear out my necessary boars." He gingerly takes the mask and hangs it on a side pouch on his suit, he pats it to ensure that it won't fall off (or break) - wonderful! This will certainly tide him over for this stupid quest. Thankfully, the boar was still struggling to get up on its feet. Which is good. Any form of a break is welcome. Might as well take the time to limber up a bit more again: he starts with a simple stretch - you know, he's honestly surprised the toll it takes on his body to do all this nonsense - but swiftly starts go side to side on his legs. He glances back at Mao who appears to be shouting words of encouragement. What a loser. Would he say that to his face? Well... "Thank you for your words of encouragement~!"
