One gatekeeper remained, its health low but still not low enough to drop immediately. Shield looked between them and Beat, and finally decided that keeping up the damage was best for now. He wound up his sword arm and swung. This time, the light burst from its tip immediately. The time he saved wasn't enough to completely swing a battle, but it might free up enough time for him to plan another move that would. With Beat buffed, we prepared for an incoming volley. His eyes remained on the big target for now. The remaining gatekeeper leaped and landed beside him, rearing back with wings spread and striking with its jaws like a snake. The damage was small, but considering the amount he had already taken, it was nothing to sneeze at. Next came the guardian, for which Shield had been preparing. The massive beast pulled back its jaw claw and swung across the battlefield like he was reaping grain. Shield hit the deck, feeling the gale of wind tug at his body but remaining otherwise unharmed. Beat said, admiring the change in tactics from the usual tank and laugh strategy. Games like Sword Art Online were interesting in that it was actually possible to take a swing from a giant monster and hold your ground, assuming the proper stats of course. The missed swing from the Black Guardian gave Beat the opening he needed and he charged forward, happy to be charging his weapon with a different sword art. "Big mistake, time to pay!" He shouted as he reached the creature's face and unleashed his attack. His form seemed to multiply as thunderous strikes assaulted the Black Guardian, doing a healthy chunk more than his area of effect attack and evoking a somewhat louder roar than before. He landed near Shield and offered the older player a hand to help him up as he glanced at the Guardian's health bar, "Couple more should do it." He had been without his thorns damage too long. The ads should have been dead by now. However, here they were. In his head, he knew he was nowhere near dying. However, his survival instincts were creeping into the edges of his awareness. At the point I hit yellow, I'm half dead... His mind went into overdrive. He could go full turtle, but with attacks coming from both sides, odds are, his defenses would get blown on the weaker enemy. Still, his green gauge was dwindling. He activated his parry skill, bending his elbow and angling his wrist for a riposte. If I'm going to block the weakling, I might as well put him out of his misery... Then it happened. The gatekeeper struck. Its skull unhinged its jawbone. Before it could attack, Shield pivoted on his front foot, angling his body to deflect. The bite came, and rolled harmlessly off of Shield's blade. His wrist rolled and he slashed through the creature's neck, severing it and leaving the hellbeast frozen stock still for a brief moment before it shattered into polygons. The next moment, an oversized claw clamped down around him, and his health gauge slipped down the last little bit of the first half and turned a bright, warning yellow. And Shield saw red. He then saw something he normally didn't get to see: Shield's healthbar turning yellow. Beat knew that Shield took pride in keeping his health in the green and for the most part, the older player did just that. He had established himself as one of the, if not THE, toughest tanks in the game, so to see a sub-boss bring him down to that level was unusual. "Uh oh Shield, you're turning yellow! I always knew you were a big scaredy-cat!" Beat jabbed with a grin as he charged forward and pummeled the guardian with a multitude of strikes, each one leaving its mark if the creatures body and freeing the tank from it's grasp. The rhythm of the battle pounded in his ears. Buff the attacker. His sword swung, and another red orb of light arced in the general direction of Beat. It homed in on him, boosting his damage just in time to replace the expiring buff. He was barely conscious of it. His eyes were narrowed and focused. The only thing he could hear now was the cacophony of roars from the Black Guardian's many mouths. Aincrad melted away. Suddenly, he was 14 again, huddled in front of a tube television in a dark room with a half empty two-liter of soda at his side. The mechanical differences between this game and the one that inspired it began to blur. He dodged in closer to the guardian, and limbs like tree trunks rained down around him in rhythmic succession. This is the hardest phase of the fight... I need to find an opening to cast my attack spell. Now... how do I open that menu aga- As he rolled past one attack, another one caught him in the ribs and sent him sprawling, knocking his health further down into the red.
