Special Dungeon

Purchasing the Special Dungeon Map unlocks the Special Dungeon <<Easter Bunny’s Chocolate Factory>>. Inside the Chocolate Factory, you will be pitted up against enemies of the same tier as the one who initially used the map. So, a Tier 3 Player spawning the dungeon would create a Tier 3 version of the dungeon. The Special Dungeon must be undertaken with at least one other player, with a maximum number of players being 4. Players may trade Eggs as they please. Players roll from a unique loot table within the special dungeon.

Encounter 1: The Caramel Warren

Shield stared up at the sky at the edge of the safe zone, just beyond the walls of the Settlement of the Iron Fist. The overcast sky boiled and buffeted slowly, the titanic clouds seeming to move in slow motion from the ground. To his left, the stairway down to the lower floors. Since Seul had an orange cursor, this would likely be the direction he would come from. Before him was the entrance to the expansive labyrinth that encompassed nearly the entirety of the floor. Its walls towered over him, their stony surfaces retreating back into the sprawling maze and turning at the first corner just a few hundred paces away.

In his hand, Shield held the map that had been one of the coveted rewards from farming eggs. Brokers had already been reporting some of the drops that had come from the encounters, and every single one of them was impressive in their own regard. No player left empty-handed, and several left with far more interesting loot than others. Unfortunately, in the situations where luck mattered most, no amount of skill or buffing seemed to affect the outcomes. They were truly random. Shield disliked this greatly. He had always been of the opinion that luck favors the well prepared and rewards them eventually. This was a one-shot, all or nothing, and it was a crap shoot.

In the last few moments he had to himself, he removed a potion from his inventory, imbibing it quickly, followed by a heavy piece of pound cake which he quickly regretted saving until after the potion. It was dense and stuck in his throat as he tried to hurriedly choke it down. Once ingested, he checked his HUD, admiring the boosts that he had gained from both items. His preparations squared away, all that remained now was to await his companions.

Baldur wandered his way back through the maze, following the fading penguin chalk markings on the walls that Macradon had made as they explored the labyrinth in search of its guardian, and eventually the boss fight. It was slow going, fraught with wandering monsters showing up at every turn. He had consumed a feasts worth of buffs for this dungeon he was running with Shield and Beat, his first mission with them since the labyrinth guardian of the previous floor. As he past the most faded penguin, he found himself at the entrance to the boss room below, and Shield standing there, waiting for them.

"Ohayo, Hashira-dono."

Baldur gave him a teasing smile as he greeted him with the most respect and sass he could muster.

"I see I'm the first one here. So we're bringing Seul along with us? I don't think I've grouped with him outside of a boss fight since my first attempt at the banshee." Baldur rubbed his chin, "I think I remember him being a tank, but it's been a long time."

He shrugged and rested his left hand on his swords, "but then, it's been a long time since we last ran a quest as well."

Many things weighed heavy on the swordsman’s mind as he made the trek up to the twenty-fifth. Through struggle and countless hardships they had somehow managed to clear a quarter of the game’s floors. Though, Seul used the term “they” loosely. It was true he had played a part in two major battles, but ultimately the contributions he offered were minimal in the grand scheme of things. With that being said, a lack of presence was something he sought to change in the months to come.

When his boots fell upon the final step, he offered a wave to the two men who already gathered by the floor’s entrance. It was still surprising he managed to secure a spot in a party tackling the event dungeon, but luck clearly hadn’t been a stranger to the man during his time trapped in Aincrad. Fortune supposedly favored the bold, and Seul possessed no shortage of either.

“Nothing like a good dungeon crawl to get the blood pumping, amirite?”

Knowing little of Shield and Baldur’s fighting styles, he was interested in seeing how things would play out. Keeping up could take some actual effort this time around. Luckily, the Spot-On Tea he purchased would aid with that, if only slightly. Downing it without coming up for air, he could feel the effects on his senses start to kick in as he smashed the empty cup against the floor in a miniature explosion of pixels.

Beat walked from the teleportation pad and toward Shield's marker at the edge of the safe zone with a small bounce in his step. It had been quite some time since he had actually gone through a dungeon that would prove to be a unique and interesting challenge. He certainly wasn't looking to risk his life on a nearly impossible fight, but given the disappointment that the Scents of the Wild quest chain had been, he was looking forward to something more interesting.

What the...Beat's eyes went wide as he immediately noticed the orange icon above Seul's head. When they had last traded, Beat had left the item in his shop for trade, he hadn't actually spoken to the other player. He had also noticed that Seul was on the guild roster, meaning this would be the second orange player they had recruited. With the guild's blessing, it was hard to find a reason to start any sort of investigation or drama, but Beat made a sharp point to follow up on the past of Seul. Can never be too safe...

With his apprehensions mostly tucked away, Beat gave a wide wave to everyone as he proceeded to eat his much needed lunch of buff food, "Yo!"

Shield nodded to each of the new arrivals as they approached. "Glad everyone made it so promptly," he said, looking between all of the faces around him. "Info brokers have made it sound like most of these fights are... unconventional. In particular, the first fight, a lot of the monsters won't actually be valid targets until the tank has been taken out, not even by AoE." He was sure that this wasn't new information, but the last thing he wanted was to step into a fight and have the monsters get the drop on them. "If there are no objections..."

He unfurled the map, turning to the labyrinth and holding it out. The edges of the map lit momentarily, and as soon as they had dimmed, a bare patch of square ground right at the entrance of the labyrinth lit as well. From the stone walls, there twisted outward wrought iron bars and heavy lead pipes that twined together over the path to form an arch. Grotesque sculptures began to take shape among the metal frame - lanky rabbits with jagged, rusty teeth, and a chicken with skeletal, bat-like wings, all shaped from iron and pipe. The ground beneath their feet shifted, pushing them back several feet towards the settlement as a gaping hole opened into a staircase leading down.

When all had fallen still, there stood at the entrance of the labyrinth a stairway beneath the arch that led down into the ground. Sconces blazed to life along the stairs, lighting further and further down into the earth and out of sight. Taking a look at the others gathered, Shield gave them a nod and took the first steps down into the dungeon. The stairs were wide and broad, sloping gradually downward and sweeping slightly from side to side. The earth around them was a coarse sandstone that glowed a pale golden hue in the firelight.

Several hundred steps to the bottom, and the ground finally leveled out. Shield's heavily booted feet traipsed loudly on the stone ground, echoing down the long corridor. After another hundred paces, the walls and ceiling opened up into a wide room with high, vaulted ceilings. There, in the center, there sat an odd display - that is to say it was exactly like one would expect to find in a shopping mall during Easter. Statues of rabbits walking like people, posing jauntily, frozen mid-wave and smiling contented smiles, standing on a square patch of impossibly green astroturf. "You know... this would be a lot less weird if they were angry. It is honestly much more uncomfortable this way."

As he spoke, Shield spotted a substance oozing down the walls. It was like blood in a horror movie. However, the salty sweet smell of something familiar intruded upon his nostrils. "...is that caramel? Caramel.... Wasn't there something about caramel that the brokers had mentioned?" The lights snuffed out except for a few bright ground lights around the statues, throwing the features of their faces into sharp relief. Caramel was now running down the walls like running water. One of the rabbits' heads snapped towards Shield, and one of its comically large gloved hands lifted towards its own head. Above it, a bright neon sigh buzzed and flickered on, tracing out a message as a carousel pipe organ ground slowly to a start in the darkness.

 'Welcome to the Caramel Warren.'

"Caramel Warren!' It's the first combat! Look alive!" The rabbit that was moving grabbed its own ears and yanked up hard. Its head came off, revealing beneath it a true head of a much more sinister bunny, its long buckteeth jagged and curved, its hairless head a sallow, milky tan color. The other three rabbits on display did the same, pulling off their disguises to reveal themselves, one seemingly made of ice, another of red cinnamon candy, and one an almost blackened dark chocolate. They unzipped the front of their costumes and left their old skins behind, lumbering forward towards the party.

Battle Theme

Staying quiet for most of the trip, Seul stayed toward the middle of the group with arms reclined behind his head. Regardless of what waited for them he was sure it wouldn’t pose any real issues. Eventually they’d reach the Caramel Warren, but rather than afford them time to explore the game decided to kick things off at the front door.

“My time to shine!” He yelled before sprinting past the others.

An audible ‘clang’ rang out as his sword escaped scabbard. Concentration activated causing the world around him to slow, but Seul continued to barrel toward the enemy party like a runaway train, and ecstasy gleamed in his eyes while winding up his sword art. It was only a matter of seconds before he had managed to close the distance between himself and the first rabbit that greeted them. The grip he held on the glowing greatsword tightened as it unleashed a strike from below with Galaxy Destroyer, tearing into the monster with an impressive blow.

There was something surreal about watching bunnies unzip their bunny suits. It felt as if they had stepped into some kind of Easter themed fun house horror movie. He supposed given everything, it was suitably B movie camp that would make for an amazingly fun romp in a game designed to put its players in a death game trap. Perhaps the theme was almost meta. That struck Baldur as suitably Kayaba.

However, there was work to be done. Baldur took a moment, cleared his mind, and let out a deep breath. When he focused his eyes on the first toffee bunny, they were steel blue. The red cursor appeared above the creatures head, even as the others seemed to move towards them in slow motion.

"Here I go." Baldur breathed out and took a half step forward to <<Charge>> his sword art <<San Ge>> and the system lurched him forward with inhuman speed. His form becoming something of a blue streak as the white flames of his haori snapped in the wind behind him. Brilliant white light exploded in an arc as he drew his sword, cleaving into the rabbit with the first strike, and then flowing around the mob with a series of slashes too fast for anyone, or even an AI, to evade. When the system assist finally stopped his movement, Baldur let out another breath. He didn't worry about in coming moves. They had Shield here with him, and Shield would take the aggro.

"What the..." Beat muttered as the creatures shed their skin then proceeded to lumber towards them. It was a somewhat unsettling sight, but it did seem to fit the death game motif better than a lot of other things he had seen since being trapped here. His focus narrowed in on the tan colored bunny, who was clearly going to stop any attempt at the others.

"Alright, you die first!" He said, brandishing his spear and pointing it forward before activating his charge skill. The system sheathed him in a red aura before he kicked off of the ground at blistering speed. His blurred for reached the tan bunny in an instant before his form seemed to multiply and rapidly strike his target, before his momentum carried him past his victim. He smirked as he turned around, pleased that he and Baldur had done equivalent damage. His status as one of the top dps on the front lines was a small point of pride for him and he was glad to see that he had not been left behind during his absence.

The fight had begun, and the DPS had done what DPS does. Now it was Shield's turn. He widened his stance, taking in a full breath of air. His lungs expanded until his chest felt like it was being squeezed by his armor. The muscles along his ribs contracted and compressed the air, and with booming <Howl>, he called out into the semi-dark. "HEY, YOU LONG-FOOTED FREAKS! GUESS WHO IT WAS WHO STOLE THE MOST OF YOUR PRECIOUS EGGS!" The rabbits all stopped in their tracks, their heads slowly swiveling towards Shield. The one that had been the target of the others' attacks tilted its toffee head, and then it was gone. The others vanished a moment later.

Shield looked around. They were not anywhere he could see on the ground, and the walls were so heavily coated with flowing caramel now that they would not be able to use them to their advantage much. The last direction to look was up. Against the darkness of the high vaulted ceiling, four rabbits landed, upside down, their necks craned in the same direction to focus on the tank. The one that seemed to be covered in a layer of white ice slapped its forepaws on the ceiling and the health gauge of the wounded rabbit refreshed slightly. Then, they were all gone again.

Shield cast around in the dim light of the warren, trying to see where they would land. He pulled his shield close to his body. Without warning, his vision was filled with the same sallow, creamy color from before and two cartoonishly large eyes. Three five claws unfurled from each fore paw like a broad war fan, which it raked harmlessly against his aegis. However, the attacks that hit him from the sides and the back were not harmless. The first was slight, but the other two took significant chunks out of his health. Shield pushed his way past the Toffee Bunny, whipping around to see the sharp, blood-stained buckteeth of the rabbit whose name was labeled on its health gauge as 'Frosted Bunny.' The Red-Hot Bunny carried at its hip a scythe whose blade was wreathed in flames, and the Dark Chocolate Bunny carried in its oversized paws two reverse-gripped knives with forward swept blades - much like karambits, only much larger. The 'fan' wielder stepped forward, holding its arms out to the side to block any path to the others.

"I see... a bunny tank. Interesting." Their health had all taken a dip from Shield's defenses. It wasn't much, but it was something at least. Meanwhile, the scythe wielder had left him with a nasty burn that lingered after the attack. "What an curious party of cartoon misfits...  Complete with your own healer as well. Looks like bringing the extra DPS is going to pay off for us."

The others had joined in on the onslaught but none of them had managed to actually fell the beast. Once the monsters were done with their assault they had returned to the protection of the Toffee Bunny, and seeing as its health had slightly returned Seul knew he had to act quickly. With the blade raised high he rushed the candy creature with another Galaxy Destroyer to its hip.

So far the battle was going pretty well. Baldur and Beat would no doubt be able to kill the enemy’s tank and make it open season. As he backed away the swordsman’s eyes danced across the field. Which one posed the highest threat? Ideally they would be his next target, but as Shield had absorbed all the damage it was difficult to discern one from the others.

“The tank’s almost dead! Who’s next, guys?” He shouted, wanting to gauge everyone’s opinions on the situation.

Baldur watched as the Bunnies tore into Shield in a truely impressive flurry of claws and teeth. he had no doubts that the tank would hold, he had enough tricks in his pocket to be unfettered by this barrage, but the burn would normally get through his tough defense, only to be countered by the tanks impressive healing. He was truly the immovable tanks. Seul and Beat seemed to be keeping up as well, and for the moment, it meant the group was firing on all cylinders. The health of the <<Toffee Bunny>> had dipped into the red, and that meant they would finish it off shortly. Since he hadn't retreated from his previous forward position, Baldur was already in place to follow up his attack as soon as the varmints retreated from Shield's thorny damage.

Taking the white and gold katana, Baldur prepared for his next <<San Ge>>, power surging into the sword as it whirled around in front of him, tearing into the 3d model so viciously that it exposed the interior, red wire frame within the hollow creature and exploded with a roar of thunder, paralyzing the creature for a finishing blow from Beat.

"Always go for the healer as quickly as possible, otherwise it'll just drag the fight out that much longer."

The steel blue eyes of the samurai slid over to the Frosted Bunny, already lining up his next attack.

Beat watched as the Toffee Bunny managed to hang on was a small sliver of red health pulsing in its health bar, "Well, they have lucky feet for a reason I suppose." He said, glancing at Baldur and giving him a wink before lining up the kill shot on the paralyzed rabbit. Given the last attack, Beat had a pretty good gauge on how much energy to put into his next attack.

"The nice thing is that I can use a sword art I almost never use!" He said excitedly as he charged the stationary bunny, taking a small hop and turning his body as he brought his spear across the face of the creature. He grasped his spear with both hands and began to twirl the spear around, catching the bunny three more times before finishing the combination with a thrust through the gut of the bunny. The candy creature began to melt before bursting into red pixels, the protection effect wearing off of the other three.

"Alright! Tank is down! Onto the healer!"

He had taken more of a hit than he was accustomed to. It wasn't uncommon to deal with heavy damage dealers, but it was rare to have so many in one place. "Lilith, a little help, please?" A little scaled head slithered up out of his collar, gaping her mouth to strike with her fangs at the side of Shield's neck. The veins in his neck stood out as they flooded with increased volume, but his health was partly restored. "Thank you!" With a flick of her tongue and a whip of her tail, she was gone and out of sight once more.

With aggro well in hand and a quick top-off of his health, Shield finally had some time to start playing support. He rushed further into the room, trying to keep himself moving so he would be a more difficult target. Holding out his sword, shield focused his attention on the tip, where wisps of red began to coalesce into a glowing sphere of pale vermilion light. Hot on his heels, the frosty and the red-hot rabbits would take turns materializing suddenly and taking a swipe before vanishing, each time just on his heels. He swung about a full one-eighty and flung the light to Beat, watching as it curved towards the spearman. "Tough choice between the heavy damage of the zweihander and the spear, but that little bit of accuracy clinches it! Give em hell, boys!"

At that, they were on top of him. The icy cold teeth of the Frosted Bunny struck him on his sword arm, and the scythe wielding hell bunny, so-called 'Red-Hot,' took a chunk out of his leg. Both wounds began closing quickly, but not enough to keep the damage off of him entirely. He'd survive comfortably for some time still, but taking out vectors of damage was paramount. Leaping back, the paws of the ice bunny slapped at the ground, and the health of the two nearby rabbits refreshed somewhat, though not completely. Shield's defenses had seen to that. However, the third remaining rabbit was not to be found. Had the others taken it out when he had his back turned? Very unlikely.

"We're short a rabbit!" he called out to the others. "I'll ferret him out, but stay alert!"

“Wrong answer!” He exclaimed while dropping into his next stance.

Light enveloped the greatsword and when the bunny tank had finally fallen Seul sprang forward yet again. Though Baldur and Beat had sought to attack the healer next, it had been a trick question. The enemy had been focused on Shield making it easy for the swordsman to get close, and as sitting ducks (sitting rabbits?), Seul would be able to strike both with a single move.

Six strokes danced from his blade and tore through the monsters. He was even somewhat surprised himself as the final hit landed on the Red-Hot Bunny. Rarely did his AoEs work but when they did he enjoyed it thoroughly. His damage may not have been on par with the other weapons at play but it was a nice feeling nonetheless to see the two creatures nearly at half health now. He didn’t imagine the fight would last much longer.

"About to make my kill count two." Beat said, eyeing the the bunny with whiter frosting coming off, revealing the monstrosity's sweet insides. It was like a five night at Freddie's game without the robots and instead, baked monsters that tried to eat you. "Healing is cheating and absolutely not allowed." He said to the creature as his spear shimmered with energy. "Game over!" With that, Beat's charge skill activated once again, turning him into a red blur as he closed the distance between him and the frosted bunny, the creature staggering backwards at the sudden appearance of the player.

"OraOraOraOraOraOraOraaaaaaa!" Beat's multi-strike sword art ripped the delicious bunny apart, chunks of frosting flying off before bursting into red pixels as the bunny's health bar drained to zero, its stunned feet fading away last. "Thanks for playing." Beat said with a wide grin on his face as he eyed the Red-Hot Bunny net.

"Got it," Shield called out to Beat. "So if you ever are low on health, I absolutely won't use First Aid on you," he called out, certain that his old friend and rival would appreciate the jab. "And speaking of support skills, let's see who needs topped off. Looks like... Seul is lowest. Heads up!" He held out his sword arm, focusing his attention at its tip where wisps of pale blue light began to gather. He swung his blade with a flick of his wrist, sending the orb of light towards the orange crystal on the other side of the battlefield. It curved along its course, homing in on Seul as it flew.

Shield turned his attention back to the remaining rabbits, or rather rabbit singular. One of them was missing. With a quick visual sweep, something seemed out of place. "There! Above the doorway where we first came in!" The darkest of the bunnies hung there with one of his karambits dug into the soft sandstone as a handhold, hidden in the semidark.

Upon being spotted, it kicked off the wall, slashing across the area where it hoped to catch the most players off-guard, but Shield was already on his way to intercept. With a swelling of the off-key carnival music that was this combat's environmental background music, there came a heavy clang of metal on metal, and the bounced harmlessly back, its blade skipping off of the Manticore Mask. The rabbit caught the top of the shield with one paw, flipping up onto the top and slashing across Shield's chest just as the scythe wielder caught up from behind, doing the same across his back.

Both rabbits took a solid chunk of damage once again, but there was nobody left to heal them up. The fiery rabbit, as a result, clutched at its paws which were covered in scratches and burns from Shield's defenses, and its health dipped into the yellow.

"Mop 'em up, guys! Show them what real DPS does!"

Another bunny had fallen thanks to the spearman, and the fight was wrapping up it seemed. Shield was able to locate the hidden monster and when he did, Seul charged up yet another Calamity Disaster. Shining bright, his greatsword followed close behind as he neared the two creatures. A flurry of slashes unleashed upon the pair like a tempest, and although he had placed all he had into the attack, it wasn’t good enough.

Seul clenched his teeth as he fell back. Though he hadn’t faltered in any of his attacks, the damage he dealt paled in comparison to the others. Fighting alone for so long, he didn’t mind having to endure longer fights with minor power. But now seeing what others were capable of he was starting to second guess. Powerful equipment was out there in Aincrad, that much was evident. It was just a matter of finding it. With some luck, he’d come across a better weapon eventually.

Baldur watched with a grin as Seul pulled out his AoE attack. He had forgotten that giant sword Seul was swinging around was the two-hand straight sword that Macradon also loved to wield, and how devastating it could be in an AoE situation. The damage quickly cut another several turns out of the fight. Beat and Baldur may be top tier single target DPS, but the power of an AoE wielder was on display here.

"Nice one Seul."

Beat rushed in, finishing off the both the Toffee Bunny and the Frosted Bunny as if he was trying to make sure everyone knew that the time away from The Front hadn't diminished any of his sharpness. The thought made Baldur smile as he turned his attention to the last two bunnies. His AoE wasn't quite as good as Seuls. Perhaps if he used the Muramasa on this attack, he could finish them off, but it wasn't worth the inaccuracy.

Following Seul's lead, Baldur unleashed his own AoE attack, finishing off the Red Hot Bunny, and almost finishing off the Dark Chocolate Bunny.

Tsk.

"Almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades." The gaijin samurai said by way of appology at having Beat need to clean up his left overs again.

"Oh no, I'll just follow behind and mop up. You relax Baldur. It's just such an honor to work with you." Beat joked, giving the samurai a wink as he laughed. This fight had been far from intense and the young player had no trouble feeling free to relax. The dark chocolate bunny stared at him as he approached at a brisk walk. Large globs of chocolate fell off of the nearly beaten bunny as it growled at him, Beat sneered as he filled his spear with energy, eyeing the creature with disgust, "Gross. Good thing you weren't very strong."

With a lightning fast thrust, Beat's spear impaled the bunny with a grotesque noise. As dark chocolate flew from the wound, the effect of the Spear of Destiny triggered, bathing the bunny in radiant light as it melted around his spear and into a dark puddle before bursting into a shower of red pixels. Beat stared at the place where the puddle had been and shook his head, "Again, gross."

With the rabbits of the warren defeated, the organ music that had filled the air ground to a slow halt, slowing and then stopping altogether. Shield straightened up, letting out a little breath. While Beat was adopting a lighthearted disposition, Shield remained impassive. This was his default, but at the moment, he was not able to relax. He looked at his health. He was already several hundred points down.

Supposedly this fight is one of the biggest damage events. Even if they press to move on, I should be okay.

As the dust cleared, a congratulatory display exploded into the air in front of the party, and a reward window in front of each player. Shield examined his own. "Frost Necklace. Perfect Trinket with two slots of Recovery and one slot of Life Mending." It was not ideal for him, but Jacob's ladder had been pushing to find decent healers. This would be an excellent addition to a healer's kit. He stored it away for the time being.
