Shield led the way, skirting the edge of the lake, which in this particular direction encroached very closely on the wall, which made for difficult angles of terrain. However, as the walking space opened back up, Shield's earring lit with a brilliant golden light. He set down his gear for a moment and took a closer look around, knowing that with as many resources abounded in such a place, for his trinket to react meant only one thing - another treasure chest.

The area was fairly clear of debris, and thankfully he couldn't see any shapes under the water that would indicate he needed to swim for his loot. However, as he turned back around, in the spot where the wall retreated from the lake, there was a hidden nook behind that corner, and there was his sought object, plain as day, but only from one direction. "Sneaky bastard," he mumbled to himself, shaking his head with a wry little smirk as he made his way over, keys already in hand and ready for use.

This was what he was used to when it regarded chests, the cardinal had this nasty habit of simply dropping them just outside of your line of sight in a teasing fashion. Countless times in his trips they seemed to be just placed at his back at random intervals, causing him to take a routine of a last scan before he retired, and about half the time he would end up in front of such a container. Spotting not only the chests glimmer but this strange glow of Shield's earring for a quick moment, Raidou knew he had it covered and he was also convinced he knew the interworkings well enough now given his study of the subject. What a peculiar enhancement Raidou thought, having seen nothing like it before. It was like sonar, pulsing when Shield went to pass by a chest, Raidou removed his glasses and looked toward the trim and to his surprise, the sheen on the trim was gone. Turns out the light he was seeing was more than a keen eye, Kasumi had done something more to these glasses.

Shield lowered himself to one knee and held his keys out to the lock, picking between the two that remained on the first ring. Finally deciding on the more likely option, he held it to the lock and watched the container pop open. He glanced over the contents and sighed. "Wrong key, I suppose." It wasn't clear what truly made the contents what they were, but he figured that since a bad craftsman blames his tools, it was maybe more satisfying to let himself be the bad craftsman for a moment.

The real difference here is that the people who coined that phrase didn't have an RNG to deal with.

He turned his back on the chest, paying little attention as it shattered upon his leaving. "Come on," he said to Raidou. "There's a comfortable spot up this way." He led the other player around the other arm of the lake, setting down his things on a gently sloping bank with a few seat-sized stones to choose from. "Make yourself at home."

Raidou picked up his stuff, which was really just the rod and his sword that was still unattached from his frame. Re buckling the sword to his frame, the heft making it a bit of a struggle. Trailing behind Shield after replacing his glasses on the bridge of his nose, Raidou obliges the change of location. A seat on flattened stone, the bottom of his robe creating some cushion for him as it folds underneath him. A tossed cable with an unwaning determination the nomad wasn't going to let cardinal's overhanging choice in misfortune discourage him, if he had to live in here he would get an honest yield even if it killed him. The lake seemed just as dead on this side, Raidou's decision on the pole he was using became a topic for thought, perhaps it was ill suited for this sort of fishing but as was a newcomer to a new affair.

Shield took his time setting up his tackle box. The last chest had been disappointing, and he decided taking a moment to recenter himself might do him a little good. This had been an odd sort of trip so far with inconsistent luck and very bipolar results of actual chest contents. He took a seat and crossed one foot over the other thigh, taking his time baiting his hook and testing his line before finally letting out a long, slow breath and turning his eyes back to the lake.

Okay. You've been temperamental today, but I suppose we all have off days. Are you taking exception to how excessive our preparations were? Like we're expecting too much?

Shield sighed, wondering why he was even trying to reason with a fake lake inside of a video game. He shrugged to himself and tossed his line out into the water. "Might take a little time for our luck to turn. Too much commotion could potentially make the fish a little timid at first."

A drawn comparison in reflection, Shield knew he was referring directly to the fish but Raidou couldn't help but think of the guild and how hastily he was pushing them through the gauntlet. But it was a test of endurance and capability, although a bit strenuous it was only an uphill battle from here. A spin of the tin spool attached to his equipment shifts the silver line with fly bait across the surface of the water, attempting to draw them in with fluid motion before allowing it to rest as if it becomes trapped. "Noted" he remarks to Shield, taking the experience as one more rule to abide. it takes a couple passing moments of inactivity before a latched bite on the provided bait. A twist of his hand rips it to shore, pivoting the bent rod to prevent it from snapping under the force. To his surprise, it was a bit on the larger end, a fair size bass of darkened green scales. Unhooked and tossed back in, Raidou was after bigger game.

It was unusual for Shield to leave his line out in the water without reeling in and recasting, but he figured with the recent relocation it was worth a go. He sat patiently, but soon he was lost in thought, trying to make sense of the trip so far. He had known the results to be inconsistent before, but something seemed different about today. Granted, the last time he went fishing with other people, it was strictly for eggs, and those were abundant to fishermen. He hadn't been paying attention to chest count at all, and if anything was concerned they might slow him down.

It took him a minute to come back to his senses. His line had been out for far too long with no results. It was time for him to reel it back in and try a new spot if nothing else. When he had managed to recover his line, he gave a small groan, holding the bare hook up before his eyes. Something had stolen his bait.

Well, at least we know the fish are hungry enough to come investigate.

Raidou makes a comment "These are the most temperamental creatures I have encountered yet." as he looks on to Shield's bare hook with thoughts of how they only seem interested when he was distracted by some manner or another. A shift of the line still cabled in the water, causing the water to displace a bit as he shifts the lure around for a moment hoping for another to latch upon it. His success was rather fleeting today, he deduced that Fishing was a bit of a coin flip. They seemed to be completely ignoring his hook as well. "You don't suppose?" Raidou remarks as he pulls his fly lure out of the water, and in the very same Raidou shows it to Shield "We have a greedy little bugger in there." as it was absent of his bait as well, scratching the back of his head. "Half tempted to go in there after it."

Shaking his head, Shield baited his hook once more, selecting a section of what appeared to be pale white lizard tail. It had been sold to him as bait, however, and so far his luck with such things had been fairly successful. He shrugged, tossing his line out into the water once again and sitting back on his stone. There was a period he spent waiting, watching the water as the ripples from their earlier successes still moved across the surface, though it was becoming more and more calm the more time passed.

Something nibbled at his line, and he waited a moment to see if it would bite properly this time, but there was no further activity over the next several seconds. He sighed once again - he had been doing a lot of that today - and reeled in his line, hoping to not see what ended up being exactly what he saw - an empty hook once again. "At this rate, things are going to stop biting because none of the fish are going to be hungry anymore."

A press of the breadcrumbs back to the line, that was provided with the pole kit he had bought Raidou took notice that Shield was using much different bait. This convinced them that maybe he had duped, the bait he was using was rather unappealing to the game he was after. An idea crossed his mind, turning to his component satchel on his leg, pulling free a herb, and popping off one of the leaves. It was one of the bright orange Tangerine dream that reeked of citrus, Raidou rinses the stink from his hand using the water before casting the bread with the smell into the water. As if in response and frenzy a quick bend of his rod in an arc. "Maybe my bait sucked." Raidou exclaimed as he started to reel hard against the greedy fellow that could not resist the urge to bite the stinking mass on the end of his line. To the shore, a fair sized monster finds rough terrain.

"God, who even knows at this point," Shield said, trying his second piece of lizard tail and and doing his best to hook it through the thickest portion of the morsel, so even if something attempted to run off with it, it would not tear so easily. With that, he stood up to gain a little more height and cast, hearing his reel feed out with a high pitched whiz. He took his seat once again and let out a breath. "Persistence is wait paid off before. it will pay off again. We just need to be patient. I'm glad something is biting, though fish aren't exactly top priority. Still, something is better than nothing."

As he spoke those words, there came another nibble, but this time it was followed by a proper bite and a real tug of war. He drug the fish through the water and landed it with little difficulty, watching it writhe in the typical fashion before transitioning to its new state as an item. "First nothing, then fish, and after that, chests. Here's hoping!"

Shield peels free quite a monster of his own, Raidou watching him haul this beast to shore as his own receives a hearty rip toward the water. Threatening to pull his arm from his socket Raidou begins to fight against it with equal force, a bend, and twist of the rod allowing him purchase enough to tire the beast out. An equaled massive water dwelling creature slid to the rock, unhooking his gain and adding a bit more of the orange leaf to the hook before casting it back in. "Heres hoping." Raidou mimics back, with faith that the claim would be true. Raidou doesn't even bother to sit if it was going to be like this, in a fear of being dragged completely into the water the next time such an aggressor latched to his pole. A shift of it along the surface show darkened silhouettes sliding around under where it lands.

While Raidou battled for his life with his most recent catch, Shield was busy putting his catch - or rather the materials that dropped from it - away. Once everything was managed, he baited his hook once again and set up to cast. He tossed his line out a short distance, not feeling the need to overextend just yet. The waters over here, though inconsistent so far, were likely still well stocked, so nearby seemed fine.

His bobber sat in the water, the white and red of the foam instrument showing up odd shades of iridescent blue in the crystal light. Shield watched it, occasionally glancing around this portion of the lake to get a better feel of where he might want to cast next. This time, however, his efforts were at least some what fruitful. His bobber vanished under the water, and he felt the pull immediately. He reeled quickly, landing the smallish fish with ease.

A silent placement of his gains into his bag, a replaced section of his bait, and additive of a tangerine dream piece. The nomad casts it back within the stagnant pool and as soon as it falls into the water it gets snatched under. Raidou pulls and the line breaks from the tension applied to it, allowing his potential to catch the hook, line, and sinker. A sigh Raidou pulls the broken line back, affixing a new bobber to it and more bait and a dab of the orange herb to a freshly knotted hook. "Can't have too much more of that, this little kit only has so many hooks and whatnot." Raidou hides his shame with the reflective lenses on his eyes as the greedy water dweller makes off with a better haul than he had obtained, sinking deeper into the pool with his tackle and the hook in tow.

"I wouldn't worry too much about it," Shield said, nodding towards his own tackle box. "These kinds of equipment are cheap and easy to come by. I've been stocking and restocking my own tackle box for so long that I've got more extras than I know what to do with. If you're running low, grab some extras." He finished putting away the little snack of a fish he had caught and began the process of baiting and preparing his line once again, finishing quickly and straightening back up to brush himself off.

He cocked his arm back and fired out into the darkness, this time further than he had on prior casts. So far, there seemed to be a lot of fish closer to shore. Although he would much rather catch fish than nothing, the fish were not his main goal. Hopefully he could his a sweet spot where there were fewer fish to grab the bait too early, but enough that missing a chest would not be a wasted cast. It took longer to get a bite this time, but the bite was small and insignificant when it came, and he reeled it to deal with it on the shore.

Raidou looks to Shield's tackle box and its an array of the very same packed to the brim, he was not fibbing. Raidou thanks him "Appreciate it." for the offering. This further cemented that he had a routine with this lake, why else would he have such an excess of equipment. Raidou would have no issue running out of them it seemed, due to how many Shield had on hand. A toss of the line as it coasts in a serpentine slide through the air, the moment it makes contact a monster of a fish latches on immediately. Raidou pulls back hard and with a shift of his feet root him to the floor, a heavy tug with a rhythmic switch pulls it to shore. The creature easily matched his height, but it was not what Raidou was after. Despite the fact he accepted none the less with a removal of the hook and reapplied bait.

Shield was not yet ready to give up on his current course of experimentation. He had only cast beyond the immediate area the once so far, and if it truly was a matter of casting somewhere that fish would not take the hook before there was a chance to snag a chest, he was going to try for the spot that seemed slightly less populated. Casting deeper into the water, he nodded, satisfied with his placement. He sat back on his rock and waited.

In his head, he was picturing it as if it were an old handheld game he used to play when he was young. There had been a fishing mini-game that involved making sure the hook sank deep enough to get to the best fish and loot without attracting the attention of the hungry little fish towards the surface. He did not know for sure if the mental image made any difference whatsoever, but it at least gave him something to focus on. For the moment, nothing was biting, but he was not about to pull in his line yet.

An extended silence built within the cavern of lights to which the luminosity seemed to not reflect upon the waters surface, the only notice of movement being either the darkened shadow of fish within or the ripples of moving and penetrating tethers. It was clear that the system was playing some sort of prank upon the actors on this stage, a slight erosion of spirit but they were remaining strong despite the fact. The lack of exchanged words simply cemented that they were determined for a good harvest even if they had to fight tooth and nail to do so. Raidou was intently focused on his task, becoming quite familiar with it as small minnow latches to his rod, it takes but a moment to draw it to shore, refill the hook and toss it back into the pool. Shield seemed under the same mentality, this was what it meant to tank. When things looked bleak, fight back.

Shield took a look down at his loot count for the trip so far. It was a lot of 'stuff,' but so far most of that stuff was consumable, which was not what he was after. before long, it would be time to go in search of more chests, but he wasn't quite ready to give up on fishing one up just yet. taking a breath and widening his stance, he let loose a distant cast that went well outside of his ability to see in the dim light. There came a distant sound of the hook hitting the water and then silence. Only the lapping of the waves against the shores was audible from water still agitated from some of the larger catches.

He waited out the silence until a few clicks could be heard from his reel. Something was causing the reel to turn slightly. Then came the bite. His spool fed out faster, and he stopped the crank with his fingers, beginning the process of reeling back in. Sadly what was on the other end was very much a fish, and more so than that was very much not a big one. He sighed as he gathered it up and stored it away.

Shield sets down his gear and is off, his aim was probably after another container not submerged in the lake. Raidou would keep an eye on his gear while he dealt in his expertise, a line still drawn into the lake. A giant slab of fish fillet latches onto the tether, Raidou sighs as these things could not allow the line to sink past more than a few feet below the water before ripping the line taught. A bit of struggle that was becoming easier after each cast, a strength building in his arms this was excellent endurance training to be sure. Dropping the massive slab of creature to the roughened cave, Raidou unhooks it and tosses the line back in. "I need chests" Raidou was getting rather agitated at the chain of events, hoping the rather dormant hook would discourage the constant interruption stopping the line from running deeper.
