Something had reignited Oscar's passion recently. With a goal in mind, however ephemeral and potentially pointless it was, he could really bring his axe to bear against something. He had refrained from taking on the newly-discovered Gatekeeper of Fire simply becuase his heart wasn't in it anymore. But now, with a fire burning in his chest and a new carpe diem attitude, Oscar was ready to leap back in the thick of things. What better way to do that than to take on a reincarnated superboss by himself? Out of all of the rebirthed bosses, Oscar had only received help on one of them. And that was simply because Absolute Zero was an overtuned mess that required nearly a full party of level 40 players to combat safely. This, however, didn't seem to be a an even remotely-similar situation. Oscar was filled with self confidence. And it showed when he massacred the Slimes that had grown in his farm. With that done, he headed into town and teleported up to Floor Nine.

Oscar realized the moment that his feet touched down upon the blackened landscape of Floor Nine that he had he had made a serious tactical blunder. For you see, it had been so long since he had last subjected himself to the sweltering heat of one of his self-declared "no-no" floors that he'd forgotten that they had even existed. Almost immediately, Oscar was blasted with the sweltering heat. He felt all the energy and willpower begin to hemorrhage form his body. All of the get-up-and-go got up and went. But Oscar, full of determination, was resolved to not let a simple thing like the heat stop him from accomplishing his goal. He put one foot in front of the other, despite the raging inferno he felt that he was walking into. He headed out into the wilds, realizing on the way that the sooner he got this done, the sooner he could leave. With that emboldening his motions, Oscar pushed through the heat and headed off to his destination with a slight pep in his step.

As Oscar made his exit from the town, the heat grew ever more oppressive. He was really wandering blind more than anything. The quest was so new that the Information Brokers had barely any actionable intelligence on it. They basically only knew that it existed and a rough area in which to find it. He recalled Concilator's words clearly in his head. Best I can tell you is to look near a volcano. If you find some stronger-than-normal Hellhounds, you're on the right track. A volcano. Right. Oscar looked out over the horizon, clocking at least three in front of him with another five to his back and flanks. Which volcano was the question. Eventually, Oscar settled on one and headed in that direction. The journey was arduous. The landscape was rocky and required no small amount of effort to traverse. This was made worse by the heat. Eventually, though, Oscar found himself at the base of one of the volcanoes - tired and sweaty from the journey.

He was about to take a seat to catch his breath when a low growl filled the air. Quick as a flash, Tesseleth's Fury was in his hand. No sooner as he armed himself did three tough-looking hounds close in. They surrounded him on all sides, each of them slowly approaching their prey with a hunter's acuity. They seemed self-aware enough to realize that he was food, but that he was also food that carried a weapon. Thus, they held back, just out of range of his axe, waiting for an opening. Eventually, though, hunger was a great motivator and they lunged towards him. In response, Oscar swung his axe with deadly precision. Tesseleth's Fury took on an eerie purple glow as his Explode Catapult cleaved right through two of them. The third buried its fangs into Oscar's shoulder. The wound burned like nothing else he had felt before. As he reeled from the attack, a second hound opened its flaming maw and encircled his ankle with its teeth.

Between the pain and sudden weight of the two Hellhound latched onto him, Oscar struggled for a bit to extricate himself from their clutches. Eventually, he was able to pry them loose - first the hound hanging from his shoulder, then the hound attached to his leg - and regain his composure. He took a look at their health bars. Oddly enough, Tesseleth's Fury had lit one of them on fire. He was taken slightly aback by the fact that they could even suffer from the burn enhancement. One would think that given their choice of habitat, they would have a certain immunity to fire. But, it seemed to work itself out. The creature was low enough in health that he could stand to ignore it and let his DoT work it out. So, he turned his full attention to the two remaining hounds and fired off an Explode Catapult. His axe cleaved through the two of them, even managing to kill one. As the second hound wheeled around to attack, it eventually submitted itself to the flames and shattered like glass. All that remained was the final hound, and it failed miserably in its efforts to attack him.

With one final Hellhound between him and being one step closer to getting out of this infernal hellscape, Oscar felt the need to really dig in deep and get this done. The burn debuff faded, so things cooled off just a bit. But only a bit. Now, Battle Healing could take over. His health bar ticked up by no small amount, bringing him that much closer to full health. Not that he found these creatures to be particularly threatening in the first place. He let fly a final Explode Catapult. The hound, which up until now had completely failed at landing a single hit, also failed at dodging the attack. Against his overwhelming offense, the Infernal Hellhound shattered like glass and floated off on the breeze. Oscar let out a relieved sigh and put away his axe. All he would need to do now is just wait for his health and energy to refill before he took on the boss. Something that was easier said than done.

As mentioned previously, waiting was easier said than done. The seconds ticked by agonizingly slow. When one is uncomfortable and forced to wait while in that state, they become keenly aware of the passage of time. The more aware one is of time, the more slowly it goes by. As such, Oscar felt like he waited for an eternity for his health and energy to tick up even the slightest bit. It was as if the pressure was building each passing moment. Though, in all truthfulness, it only took a few seconds for the passive regeneration to kick in, an intense amount of pressure and suspense accumulated in that short window. When the tick finally happened, Oscar breathed an audible sigh of relief. Only for the process to begin anew as he waited for his energy to completely refill. Clearly, he needed to occupy his mind in other ways. But it was so hot that he could scarcely think of anything else to think about.

His mind wandered to his Spider Pocket Theory. It was fitting, really. With nothing else to think about, that insipid plague would claw itself to the forefront of his thoughts. But, this time, too hot and sweaty to really give it much thought, it quickly faded to the background. It slipped deep into the recesses of his mind like sand through his fingers. A mercy. Oscar truly didn't enjoy going down that particular unnerving rabbit hole. This time, Oscar busied himself with thoughts of the future. Namely, what he would do when he finally obtained all of the Hearts. Truly, it was a meaningless thing. The items had no known use. Their descriptions were completely devoid of information. But they constituted something bigger than that. They were a goal - something that Oscar had found himself in need of in recent days. With everything going on, it was simply nice to have something to focus on.

Now that his energy was full, it was time to find this boss. It wasn't as if he needed to look very hard. In this dreaded hellscape, the heat was oppressive. Yet, in light of all of this, Oscar could distinctly make out a more powerful source of heat. And it was close. If the heat was this noticeable with an undetermined amount of distance between himself and the boss, Oscar shuddered to think how profound the warmth would be when he was actually fighting it. Oscar wandered around the base of the volcano until he found a cave in the side of it. The heat radiating from within was akin to an open furnace. The boss he was looking for had to be inside. He entered the cave, the oppressive smell of smoke and ash thick in the air. Every step was a struggle - a fight through the heat and a thick miasma of smoke. Eventually, the tunnel he was in opened up into a large cavern. Pools of subterranean magma dotted the perimeter. And, in the center, was his target.

Cerberus. But this was nothing like the Cerberus that he and Cordelia had fought. That was nothing but a mutated puppy compared to this monstrosity. Its very form oozed heat. Thick sinuous muscles ended with razor sharp claws. Three pairs of eyes were fixed square upon him as he entered this creature's domain. His weapon was in his hand as he took a step towards the creature. The moment his foot hit the floor, the horror before him let out a bellowing roar that shook the very foundations of the cavern. Stalactites fell from the ceiling into the lava pits, splashing molten rock all around. Oscar rushed forward, his axe trailing behind him. He swung with all of his might but somehow managed to miss the hulking mass of flame and muscle before him. Thankfully, each of the snapping heads missed him as well. Oscar dodged forward and wheeled around, stepping back a few paces to keep distance. Three attacks in one round couldn't be taken lightly, after all.

Oscar's next attack didn't fare much better. The smoke in the air was just too thick. Plus, it wasn't as if he could swing wildly and hope for the best. The boss seemed to have an ability that only allowed him to attack a single head at a time. That would make this fight a bit problematic. The boss got three attacks every round to his one. He would have to hope that they wouldn't get lucky and catch him off guard. If they did, he would definitely be in for a world of hurt. Thankfully, the boss missed its next salvo of attack. Oscar was really having trouble landing a clean hit. Eventually, he knew his eyes would adjust somewhat to the stinging sensation from the smoke, but until then it was like he was fighting blind. He knew that the boss itself was not fighting with a similar handicap so the sooner he picked up some momentum, the better off he would be.

Oscar dug deep and let fly yet another attack. This time, he felt his axe find purchase in one of the three gaping maws. Oscar poured more strength into the attack, guiding his weapon into the follow through. Where it had initially found itself stuck, the axe slowly worked itself free, carving a deep gash in one of the heads in the process. The beast howled in pain and staggered backwards, its claws cradling its injured snout. Then, it stopped its staggering and stepped forward. Three sets of gnashing fangs lurched forward. He pushed his body backwards in a half dive. He skidded across the hot stone floor away from the snapping jaws. It was only by a mere stroke of luck that they missed him, passing just a hairsbreadth from his legs. Oscar quickly clambered to his feet and adjusted so that the creature was firmly within his line of sight. If he lost sight of it now, it would all be over.

Finding his footing once more, Oscar dashed back into the fray. Tesseleth's Fury erupted with a gout of flame as he struck the first head for a second time. One of the beast's three health bars was completely depleted with a lucky critical. Oscar couldn't say that he was unhappy about this turn of events. Although, it seemed rather silly to be fighting such a creature with fire. The Burn Enhancement fitted upon his weapon did less than nothing to the creature. With one head down, Oscar was able to avoid the swift attacks of the two remaining heads a bit easier. Although, something had to be said about their speed and precision. Oscar hadn't encountered a creature able to push his skills to the limit to this degree. He really hadn't thought to be so hard-pressed. At the very least, their battle was nothing like the mindless grinding he had been accustomed to. It really helped him polish up his slightly-rusty skills.

Oscar decided to push his momentum a bit further. He'd managed to drop one of the three heads and dodge the remaining two without suffering any major damage to his life bar. If he backed off and gave the beast room to breathe, it would just be that much harder to swing in with a clean hit. So, he planted his feet and chained another Sword Art with his previous one. This time, the obsidian edge of Tesseleth's Fury erupted with a shadowy power. As he axe sliced through the second head, a small explosion of dark power added additional damage to the attack. The creature reeled, but had no intention of going down without a fight. The pain quickening the beast's instincts and dulling the pain allowed it to remain firm where it had previously been forced back. Two sets of fangs sank into each of his shoulders. Oscar watched his health bar plummet in a single turn. His body felt as if it were on fire. The Burn icon appeared on his bar to let him know just how profoundly he'd stepped in it.

Having both sets of fangs sunken into his shoulders provided Cerberus with the leverage needed to force the man off of him. With a mere flick of its neck, Oscar was sent flying backward. Using Tesseleth's Fury as a brake, Oscar came to a stop mere inchest from a pool of lava. Despite the system wracking him with negative feedback, Oscar pushed through and dashed forward. He spun Tesseleth's Fury, dropping the blade down low to the ground. Then he struck with a powerful uppercut, dispatching the second head in a single burst of dark energy. This time, it seemed that adrenaline wouldn't avail the creature. It was bloodied. Two heads had been destroyed, leaving only the central one. It's movements were slowing, if only slightly. Oscar was still hard-pressed to dance back away from swiping claws and gnashing fangs. But, they were on the home stretch. One more head and this battle was finished. It was remarkable how hard-fought this quest had been. Nothing like the ones he had attempted in the past.

Oscar had the clear advantage. He had not yet been reduced down into the yellow. As Battle Healing activated, its regeneration was boosted - doubled by the activation of Vampiric. Oscar was grateful at that point that the system had favored him. Such a large heal was a godsend considering how much damage he'd taken in such a small window. He pushed forward and delivered a powerful slice to the creature's snout. Back-to-back-to-back Fallen activations had been instrumental in bringing this boss low. And though he had struck with Tesseleth Fury's black fire, the flames were just as useless now as they had been the last time. They actually seemed to embolden the beast. Quick as a flash, Oscar found himself penetrated by the blackened claws of the Cerberus. Again, he was severely burned, but the damage he'd suffered was nothing compared to a few rounds prior.

This was it. One final blow. He didn't even require a Fallen proc to win this fight, but he wasn't entirely ungrateful that it happened. The beast was laid low by a final explosion of tenebrous force. Its body began to fracture, cracks spiderwebbing over its form. Eventually, the structural integrity broke down to the point that the beast collapsed under its own weight, shattering like glass. Oscar wasted no time making his exit from the cave. He slung his weapon over his shoulder and clambered out of the cave. Once outside, he oriented himself with the general vicinity of the town and set off. His task here was now complete. There was no point in remaining on this floor any longer than he had to. So, he moved about as swiftly as his feet would carry him, no pomp or fanfare afforded to the powerful creature that he had just slain. There would be time and place for celebration when he no longer struggled to breathe because of the heat.

The moment he entered down, Oscar made a beeline for the Teleportation Platform. As quickly as his hands could navigate the interface, he set his target for Floor 25 and he was off. The ground beneath his feet disappeared and he was hurled through an empty expanse at breakneck speed. Ordinarily, the entire animation of teleportation was a slightly unpleasant ordeal. But the moment he disappeared from Floor Nine, the cool of the void washed over him. Sweet relief was finally his. Floors Four and Nine were his least favorites due to how hot they were. The moment he left them behind, he was immediately embraced by a pleasant cooling sensation that encompassed his entire body. It was almost worth working up a sweat on one of those floors. Almost. Oscar felt the ground reappear beneath his feet and the void quickly faded into the background. He found himself in the Settlement of the Iron Fist, ready to continue his treasure hunt.

<<Heart of Zylara>> obtained

Oscar entered the maze, roaming about aimlessly while marking the walls with chalk so that he could find his way out more easily. He didn't know what was worse, the heat or the dark atmosphere of the Endless Maze. After a moment of thought, he settled upon one. It was definitely the heat. He made his way through narrow passageways and meandering corridors before, eventually, he found himself at yet another of the Labyrinth's Safe Havens. Just like the last one, there was a statue holding a large gemstone at the center of the lake. And, again, like the last one he encountered, as he stepped up to the shore, the gemstone rose from its pedestal and dashed across the lake into Oscar's possession. Oscar added the <<Heart of Zylara>> - a massive quartz gemstone - to his inventory and made ready to return to the settlement.

Oscar was able to follow the chalk marks back to the settlement without being set upon by any foes. He knew that he was extraordinarily lucky to have collected two of the Hearts without encountering a single enemy. He didn't delude himself into thinking that such luck would hold out forever. For now, at least, he was happy to have made such headway on his little treasure hunt. Oscar walked back into the settlement with glee, wondering whether or not he should update the old man on yet another successful trip. In the end, he decided not to. It had been quite a tiresome day and the man would definitely know when he had gathered the other seven. No sense bothering him with constant updates that wouldn't really mean anything until the task was done. So, without any further business keeping him here, Oscar stepped onto the Teleport Platform and returned to Deepedge.

TRANSITION TO FLOOR 7

The cool mountain air was just what the doctor ordered. Floor 25 had been a welcome respite from the heat, but there was nothing like being high up in the mountains. The air was thinner and, in comparison to the thick, smog-laden air of Floor Nine, made breathing much easier. To say nothing about the crispness of it. Oscar strode through the town, whistling a giddy tune. He would take the scenic route home today. Stop by the stream to wash the soot that had to be all over his face off. He was beginning to feel a little hungry as well, so his timing was impeccable. All-in-all, Oscar felt very good about today. Not only had he been able to finish off an extremely difficult quest, but yet another Heart had been added to his collection. If he kept this up, he would have all nine of them in a heartbeat. He chuckled at the pun that ran through his head. He could feel an actual, tangible improvement in his mood.

The winding mountain path leading up this manor was empty, as per usual. Oscar was able to take in the scenery in peace. He stopped by the stream that he had stopped at so frequently when he was first starting out and splashed water in his face. The cool, refreshing waters washed away the soot and grime from his fight with Cerberus. Once that was done, it took a long drink of water from his cupped hands. The cool liquid soothed his parched and dry throat. He let out a contented sigh and then continued on the path to his home. Once he had returned, Oscar stepped inside and headed for the kitchen. Cordelia was out, she had her own shop to run now. It left Oscar alone in the house for once. He made himself a quick sandwich and a large glass of lemonade. Cool foods that wouldn't feel too heavy while he was still rebounding from the heat. Once he'd finished, he settled into his room for a quick nap. That quick nap would quickly turn into several hours of sleep as he wouldn't wake until the following morning.
