Akio sat in a chair inside of yet another shop. It had been a full day since he completed his last quest, and the shopkeeper's eyes were still focused on him. Akio, however, didn't really give much of a damn, and was focused on the book in his hands. Despite how much he hated reading huge books, he had resigned that this was more necessary than completing the quest. For one, he finally read about all of the enhancements and skills available to players. He'd need to take some time to decide exactly what kind of build he'd want to take on, and which skills and equipment were needed for it, but he could do that later. He wasn't even close to getting new skills, and he doubted he'd ever get any unique enhancement anytime soon. Though this guide did provide suggestions regarding builds, he doubted they'd offer advice for a professional assassin. From what he could tell, this would explain the mechanics of the game, and how to stay alive in general, while the shady npc he met would give advice on surviving as a pker. It would be vital for him to learn about both sides. After he turned the page a second time, he heard the npc behind him clear her throat. "Pardon me, but um. You said there was a reason you came, did you not?"

Akio closed the book, and looked over to her. "Oh yeah. Here:" He said, pulling the item out of his inventory and tossing it to her. She struggled to catch it, the item bouncing back and forth before she held it stable in her hands. "What on earth is wrong with you kid?! You don't just toss an important package like that!" Akio sighed. "Look, I'm sorry! But this is the second damn time I've had to deliver some random package for an npc after completing an entire quest. I'm just sick of it and want to finish this quest series already." She looked confused so he just sighed. "Whatever, just. What is it you need? I'm assuming you need something after all." She nodded. "If you could help with something, I would appreciate it yes. There's a jewel I'm needing that can be found in one of the caves of this land. The jewel is named the Dual Rose. You'll know it when you see it, though be careful. It's said that taking it draws the attention of a strange creature which hides in the caves." This time Akio actually looked at her. 'So then, it's a combination of both of the previous quests... Is it possible this is the last of the quests?' With that he nodded. "Alright then. I'll go and grab it for you... But you better give me something useful in return alright?!"

With that out of the way, he pulled up his hood and snuck out of the shop. He kept to the shadows as best he could and maneuvered through the town until he eventually reached the crack in a building he had discovered not long after his first few days as a pker. He ducked inside of it and sighed as he took his hood off. One of the suggestions the shady npc had given was to find a location to use as a base of operations, or hideout, so that he could store his things there when he was carrying more than the system allowed. As he squat down, he recognized that the system was designed this way to keep players from carrying an infinite number of potions, but seriously. This was infuriating. Not to mention that most MMOs didn't restrain the number of potions you carried, but by the maximum size of the inventory. It was such an inconvenience. He opened an unsealed chest he found and stole, looking at it's contents. Inside were the starter potions, tier one potions, damage consumable and the safeguard he had attained. Resting in a pile were the two daggers he'd gained as well. One being the starter dagger and one being a reward. He went ahead and took two of the tier one potions, and the safeguard. He should probably keep himself stocked up from now on, and to the best of his ability. He hooked the two potions on the right hip of his belt, while he put the safeguard potion on the left side of his belt. With that he closed the chest, pulled his hood up, and nodded. "Right." He said before leaving his hideout and-

"DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY!"  "YOU THERE, GRAB THAT KID!"  "WE HAVE YOU NOW!"  "DAMNIIIIIIIIIIT!" Akio screamed as he was chased by a small army of guards. He noticed something that really pissed him off: The more you got caught by the guards, the more effort they put into trying to find you. Which means that by the time he gets the hide skill, even THAT might not be useful on this floor. "Damnit!" He turned sharply to the right to avoid a cluster of new guards. "Damnit!" He changed directions before he could fall into a trap. "Damniiiiiiiit!" He yelled as he jumped over the side of the wall from the top before landing in a small spring below. He nearly lost his breath upon impact, and afraid of drowning, he quickly swam to the surface and inhaled like he'd never inhaled before. "Cough cough... Damnit.." He turned onto his back and panted as he looked at the sky. "When will this EVER get any easier?..." And with that he continued to pant as his stamina replenished. Stamina, he noted, was all based on your own physical endurance, constitution and strength as a person, not as a player. Which means he was going to have to train at some point. A boar pup wandered over to him and sniffed his face. His nose wrinkled at it's smell, and he held his hand up to it, releasing the hidden dagger which killed it swiftly on a critical hit. He even got a boar tusk, though he figured out that those dropped by infants were useless in anything other than the quest. Figures. "Guess I should get started on finding that cave then."

Akio clicked a particular button on his menu, allowing him to check the quest's location on his map. Evidently there were several areas he could go to. Three in particular. One was closest to him, one about halfway through the floor, and the third farthest. His first thought was to just rush to the closer one but.. 'If something or someone seems too easy or too alluring, avoid it. It's likely a trap.' With that in mind, the first cave could be a lot harder than the others. Thinking further, the furthest cave could also be more dangerous, as players would usually pick between closest or farthest. Sooo... "Middle one it is!"

[Time Skip]

Even though it was only the cave halfway through this floor, it was still a long way to walk. The first floor was by far the biggest according to his map of Aincrad after all. He wondered if he could even fully map out the entire thing. He doubted it. At least, he doubted he could do it on his own. Maybe he could buy map data from other players, or see if there were free maps elsewhere. He hummed his thoughts aloud in the form of a tune as he walked. Even if it was a long walk, and he wanted to get stuff done, it was still a nice view. That player Hei was right, it was nice to just enjoy the pleasantries of this world. A frown fell on his face. "That Hei guy abandoned me. He's someone I can never trust again... I'm gonna need a new tailor."

Akio's footsteps slowly became louder and louder as his even pace became stomping. His fists ended up tightening. The fact that the tailor had vanished and, by extension, betrayed his trust, wasn't what was bothering him the most. Surely there would be some players he could put his trust in, he just had to find them. No, what really bothered him was: What was his goal? Did he not want any part of it and was just looking for a chance to run off? Was he just trying to get information off of him? Was he a spy for some player killing guild looking for victims?! Akio wasn't sure, and he hated it when he didn't know something. He really needed to find someone he could trust. Someone who had access to important information. Such as who Hei really was, and what it is he wanted. 'Don't let there be loose ends. Cut strings swiftly before they trip you up.' The only problem was he didn't know how to do that right now. He couldn't just kill the player. Not only would that raise suspicion but it would also not work out for him since he was only level five. He had no way he could kill the tailor. He'd need to find some other way... But what other way was there?

But... He really didn't want to kill someone unless he had to. If anything he'd rather kill only bad guys. But was that Hei guy a bad guy? He really didn't know.... "Aaaaagh! Why does this have to be so haaaaaard?!" His face formed a pout as he kept walking and eventually he just sighed. Best not to worry about it until he could ACTUALLY do something about it. In fact, he should probably start planning out what he was going to be doing. He took a break from looking for the cave and sat on a log. First thing he needed to do was clear out as many quests as possible.... No.. No, first thing he needed was a proper place to hide. But where? NOT the city, that was too stressful. If he wanted to hide outside though, he kind of needed a tent. And a good location without many monsters. So once this quest was completed, he'd need to find a spot to live. Once that was done, he'd keep grinding quests. He needed to focus on the easy quests first, ones that didn't pose any risks. That way he could level up quickly without any chance of death. Once that was over, he could then start taking on quests that had low level threats, and get the experience he needed from those quests. Eventually he'd get the skill points he would need to master his dagger skill, master hiding, and get the armor skill. After that it was onto things like the charge skill he read about, and definitely battle healing. Once he'd caught up in levels with everyone else, he could start taking on assassination requests. Obviously he'd start slow, only take on easy targets who didn't focus on combat skills. Once he got the hang of it, he'd start climbing up the ladder until he could eventually hunt high value targets. Though some he may need help with, like members of guilds. That would be dangerous on his own. Too dangerous.

But... What should he do after he gets all the skills he needs? What if he became a professional assassin and had enough col to live forever here? What should he do then? If he joined the frontlines, that would defeat the purpose of staying safe long enough to escape and see his mom again. So should he just... Keep playing assassin and staying low? He wasn't too sure...... But, then again. That would come later on. His primary goal was to get strong. And from what he read in the guide, part of that was gaining levels, but the other part was choosing what kind of build he wanted and picking the skills, mods and enhancements which best suited that build. From what he saw, the hiding skill had mods which increased the amount of damage he'd deal should he land a surprise attack on his foe. The obvious choice of enhancements for that would be accuracy and damage, which he already had. But he had heard of unique enhancements which could deal even more damage under certain conditions, as well as a unique enhancement that could penetrate an enemy's armor. But, he'd need to do more research on them to decide which would be best for him. After all, what if it was better to do more damage than reduce your enemy's defenses?

But that required research and experimenting. He didn't have the time to worry about that. Once again he let himself get distracted from finishing this quest. He really needed to prioritize. After all, those enhancements were far out of his reach, as was the hide skill, until he got his levels up again. Though, that did make him wonder. How frequently did those unique enhancements drop from bosses and events? And were those the only ways to attain them? Akio stood up and began to walk again. If it was the only way to attain them, then it meant in order to survive in this game, you needed to take big risks... He didn't like it, his mother would hate it, but it seemed the only real choice to make. He had to fight on the front lines at some point. He'd start with the events of course, and eventually make it to the highest unlocked floor. But, not until he was really really ready for it. Maybe ten, twenty levels above the requirement. Though, if he tried that he might never catch up. He was just gonna have to take risks and put his trust in the other frontliners as well as his teleport crystals. After all, it's not like they'd put it in the game only to prevent it from actually working. Right?

Wait, the frontliners... They were the strongest players, but were they even trustworthy?... What did mom say in her creed? 'Always learn everything you can on your competition, enemy or no. Know their strengths and weaknesses, know their patterns, know their personalities. And above all, always expect them to betray you at a moment's notice.' He nodded. Even if they were 'allies', he needed to ensure he was ready if they betrayed him. So, he'd start by tracking down and hearing any and all rumors regarding the frontliners. Even myths would do. Once he had enough col, he'd start buying all the info he could from info brokers about the frontliners... If he wasn't careful, people could buy information about him. He needed to ensure he was more careful from now on... He needed to get the hiding skill as quickly as he could too. If he learned any tips or tricks, or even discovered any glitches, he needed to keep those a secret too. He wanted to have an advantage over the other players as much as possible. And he'd lose that advantage if anyone discovered it's existence. In fact, if he believed it was a secret, and someone was prepared for it, it could easily turn into a disadvantage.

Akio went ahead and checked his map again, confirming that he was near the location by now. Wondering where it's exact location would be, he started peaking around the trees, looking for any raised areas. The first cave was located in the valley. The cave he was at right now was in the forest, and the third cave was back near the mountains. So his wonder here was, where would a cave be located in a relatively flat forest? Well much to his relief, the closer he got to the area on the map, the more the ground started to raise up like with hills. Eventually he managed to spot it and he smiled. He ran towards the opening, but then a thought occurred. 'Never rush in blind. Always wait and analyze before moving in a strange location.' Armed with his mother's creed, he skid to a stop and rolled to the right of the cave, pressing his back against the wall. Or, cliff rather. He fell silent as he waited for something to come out. As if proximity to the cave would trigger some sort of event, like a swarm of bats flying out, or a great beast waking up and charging out to go hunting. But he didn't hear anything. And so, with a little caution, he tentatively moved softly to look into the cave. For the most part it was lit up with glowing mushrooms or crystals. 'Thank you fantasy world for this illogical light.' Not seeing anything threat worthy, he took his first steps inside his first cave in sword art online.

The cave wasn't too impressive overall. It was... Well a cave. After getting over his wonder, excitement and awe at having seen glowing mushrooms and crystals, they were quickly relabeled as commonplace in his mind and the fascination left him... Of course, if he wasn't in the middle of a quest right now with his mindset being: 'Act smart or die stupid', then he'd try harvesting them, playing with them, and testing out their ability to glow if severed from the rest of the clusters. However, he really REALLY wanted to finish this stupid questline and get to something more interesting. This quest seemed to be a repeat of the first quest, only he was looking for something specific rather than materials in general. He wondered if this material he was fetching even had any significance. He doubted it though, it was probably just some other material after all. Grab it, craft an item with it. Sell it. Bam. Done. Move on to the next. In fact, the way players talked about the crafting system felt... Kind of boring. Would any old material do? Could you just find a 'special rock' and make a potion with it? Or turn a gemstone into a food? That sounded really stupid, but that's the way it sounded when players talked.

Akio continued to walk forward scanning everything in the cave he could. And the more he looked around, the less focused and serious he became. When he looked closer, he could once again see what the player Hei talked about. Sure, it wasn't too decorated on first glance, but in reality it was. The glow shrooms and glowstones light was reflecting off of the walls which had tiny minerals in them, and also drizzled with water in some areas. Therefore the walls literally looked like they sparkled with light as he passed. It was... Amazing really. He even let out a 'woooooaaaaaah' and smiled once again. Eventually he started to laugh because, well this was honestly really cool! He eventually reached a fork in the cave's path leading three separate areas. Each turning a different direction. Down each path the glowing light changed colors too. The left one turned from the pale blue to a red, the middle one to a violet, and the right one to a non-pale blue. He hesitated before deciding to stick to the blue colored one for now. In most games red usually meant fire or 'dangerous monsters here' He'd rather avoid those things as of right now. As he went down the path he noticed that the color change was from the glowstones themselves. So they came in different colors? That was so cool! A grin came to his face as he tried to take one of these crystals with him. However, when he attempted it, while it wiggled it did not give. He frowned and released his knife, taking it off the mechanism so he could try and pry it free, but all he did was put too much force into it and shatter the piece off of the cluster. "Awwww, dang it!"

Akio sighed at his failure. Or, maybe it wasn't a failure. He wondered if players just couldn't harvest certain materials from the environment. Or maybe it went further than that and you couldn't harvest them without the right skill. Was that it? If that was indeed the case, which would really suck if he was being honest, then he'd have to guess that the gatherer skill was the one that enabled you to harvest certain materials. He really hoped that wasn't the case though, as it would mean he couldn't get rare materials until far in the future. Survival was his first priority, and as such his top three skills to obtain and master were the dagger skill, hiding skill and the light armor skills. Of course, he still wouldn't get gathering after those, as he wanted to get battle healing for extra protection, and the charge skill for extra damage. Maybe after those he could get the gatherer skill... Dang he still had a long way to go before he caught up to the frontliners... Yeah, he should go ahead and experiment with the glowstones just to make sure. Once again he tried to pull and pry the stone off, but it wouldn't come off. "...Oh wait, maybe it's because it's the same one I tried last time."

Akio sighed and decided to finish this experiment later. Maybe after he found the jewel he'd been searching for. He decided to keep walking down the tunnel to see what was at the end of it. The further down he went, the more crystal clusters there were, and the fewer glow shrooms there were. There were more and more stalactites and stalagmites the further in he went too, and it seemed to slope downward as well. Akio wondered how long it would take to find this 'dual jewel'. He assumed it would have two colors, hence the 'dual' part of the name. It would be a bit lazy if it was as simple as that, but then again this was a HUGE world. He couldn't expect them to come up with something clever, original and creative with every single material or quest. Still, it would be cool if the name implied two gemstones somehow fused into one. That would be a sight to see. He eventually reached the end of the tunnel where he stopped and just gaped. On the rocky wall at the end was a jewel the size of his finger. It was a red and blue jewel, each of the colors swirling into one another in such a way that, even though it was cliche he could only call it beautiful... It was, really really cool to see. He walked over to it and pulled it out of the stone it rested in. It wasn't a perfect circle, rather it was a crude gemstone shape. But that's what artisans were for right?

Akio held the Dual Jewel for a few precious moments before he was satisfied to put it in his inventory. He HAD to come back here and pick up another dual jewel at some point. He'd love to turn that into a cool item. However, it would be evident pretty quickly that THAT plan would have to be put on hold. The second he placed the dual jewel into his inventory, he heard a grinding noise behind him. He turned to look at what made the sound and- "HOLY SHI-" The rest of his words were overpowered by the grinding noise which grew louder. Akio noticed it was the creature's pincers making the sound, and it seemed like it was preparing to do something... Vomit? Was it, was it trying to vo- or was it some type of acid spit?! An attack?! In a panic, Akio quickly took the safeguard potion and downed it as quickly as he could. Just as he finished, the monster spit a glob of what seemed like stomach acid towards him. However, even as it flew over to him, Akio knew he had enough time to dodge and did exactly that. Ducking to the right just in time, he watched as the rock beside him started to dissolve and winced. He had to take this guy down fast...

Akio tried to run around in a circle to make it harder for the Ankheg to attack him. However it didn't seem to thrilled at the idea of spitting out it's stomach acid again. Maybe it could only do it a limited number of times? The creature kept following him with it's eyes, turning around with ease to keep track. Eventually, Akio tried to lurch forward and attack. As he did so he realized something: He didn't use a sword art, so his damage would only deal four... Unless this creature's scales counted as armor!! Eyes wide, he hoped and prayed that wasn't the case... Course he never found out seeing how the creature moved to the side just in time to avoid the attack. Akio blinked as he hit the floor with an oof. He quickly rolled to the right and jumped to his feet. He just did so instinctively, not realizing the Ankheg had swung it's clawed hand at him the second he was down. Noticing the attack he grimaced at what might have happened. At any rate, neither of them was hit, so that was ten seconds meaningless...

Akio had to get a hit on this monster, but at the same time that meant he needed to pause to take the according stance. He HAD to or else he would run the risk of running in circles and dealing four damage with every solitary hit. So, he picked what he believed would be the most optimal time to attack, and when that time came he took his stance. The creature was still turning when his sword art activated and his dagger glowed. However, the creature had already fully turned, so he needed to hit it and dodge before it could attack in turn. The creature had already begun to part it's... Mouth tentacles? In preparation for its attack. Now or never he thought. He began to charge forward, time seeming to be way too slow for his liking. He released his hidden blade just as it's acid was coming out. He realized he wasn't going to evade this one, the attack was too widespread... At least he had safeguard active right? Well.... When the attack hit, his eyes widened with horror. FIFTY POINTS OF DAMAGE?! This thing could two-shot him!.. No! He couldn't back down! This thing was blocking his way out, he had to focus on killing it quickly. His wide eyes of horror became wide with determination, and he gave a yell as he stabbed his blade through one of it's legs, unhooked it and slashed the blade along the underside of it's belly before taking a stance on the other side.

There HAD to be a better way to activate his sword art than just stopping, standing still to take the right stance, and THEN follow through with the actual sword art... Well, he heard that high level players could just follow the sequence without the stance and it worked just fine, but even then. Even then his attacks would become predictable. Well, at the very least it would be faster. He might as well try it. He dodged another swing from the Ankheg, which seemed very weak now and not likely to hit him anytime soon. After he dodged, he released his hidden dagger. As it released however, he fell off balance and nearly fell, twisting his wrist to add to his momentum and keep him on his feet. When he did that, his dagger glowed from a sword art. 'what???' He immediately stabbed the monster with his dagger on the side, causing it to scream and lose eight points of damage, turning the light off. He rolled away, avoiding another attack and just stared at his hidden blade under the bracer... "What, what was that?"

Completely confused as to what happened or why, Akio jumped back to create some distance between him and the Ankheg. Which was perfect because the creature lunged at where he was, burying it's head into the ground and getting stuck. Akio took the time to look at his weapon and his wrist... He did something. He experimented with multiple hand positions until he got a response. When he twisted his wrist a very specific way, his hidden dagger glowed with the sword art activation. He pulled another dagger out from his inventory, held it in his hand and did the exact same thing with that. Nothing happened. A glitch then? Maybe it was the way the hidden dagger was designed? Or perhaps it was how it came out? Either way, he thought as he put the dagger back. This was vital information. 'If you have an advantage, known or unknown, master it.' I will mom, he thought to himself as he activated it and charged at the Ankheg. Unfortunately his timing was off due to his experiments, thus the Ankheg yanked it's head back just in time to avoid the attack, though it did land on it's back because of the momentum.
