Despite Bahr's blunder, it seemed as though the rest of the players had pulled through and scored considerable damage against the Kings - enough to shuffle Gob-Gob and Swine Jesus loose of the mortal coil once again. How convenient, Bahr thought, that they had managed to do so after only a single round of attacks. It seemed too good to be true. Too easy.

And sure enough, it was. With a single snap of Rain Minion 12s grimy fingers, the two felled abominations returned. Their combined abilities once again obliterated the life of the players, the effect this time being palpable enough to bring Bahr to his knees. All of the hardships he'd faced in Aincrad, all of the misery and grinding and strife, none of it came close to what he was experiencing. Not only was it beginning to appear as though the players were useless before the might of these creatures, Bahr felt especially useless. He'd left Dawn's Demise behind in an effort to start fresh, and his beloved pet had left him behind. Without the power he'd grown so accustomed to commanding, he felt like a shell of his former self. Just how much of his self image had he allowed to get wrapped up in his stats since he got here?

It was a quandary he would need to explore later. From the looks of it, Rain Minion 12 was the key to all of this. Its only action thus far had been to revive the others, so it only seemed logical that it needed to die in order for the others to stay dead. At the very least, it appeared that they didn't have huge health pools. Once the fish was dispatched, the pig and goblin would fall.

That was the hope, anyways.

"What the f*ck is this boss man?"

"Oscar," Bahr responded curtly. "I don't know. I feel loosely attached to all of these monsters." His eyes flickered between their adversaries. "I don't remember them being so strong individually. The pig, in particular, I fought solo when I was but a paltry level three. They must only be this powerful when working in tandem." Then, his mismatched hues met with that of his friend's. "I felt powerless against them then. I feel even worse now. Back me up, okay?"

Fueled by spite in having missed his first strike, Bahr barreled toward Rain Minion 12 as fast as his legs (and inferior equipment) could carry him. He loaded his weapon with his chagrin, reeled it back, and let it loose. The force of the attack was underwhelming, given his nerfed strength parameters, but Heavy Momentum seemed to fill in some of the blanks and give the attack enough oomph to deliver more force than it would have otherwise. Then, before the stationary goon could retaliate, Bahr bounded back to recoup.

Somewhere amid the chaos, Bahr realized that Lessa was no longer with him. When had they become separated? He looked back over his shoulder and desperately scanned the crowd, looking for any sign of his azure-clad companion. Eventually, he saw it; a streak of gold betwixt seas of dull and featureless boots. She'd become engulfed by the crowd, overpowered, and brought to the ground. Now her blonde mane had become sullied by the mud stamped into it. Her every attempt to push up from the earth was met with another stomp to her shoulder, or spine, or arm, or head.

To say that Bahr was furious was an insulting understatement.

He dashed forward toward the crowd as fiercely as he could, diving shoulder-first into the frenzied mob in an effort to split them up. Despite his best efforts, he soon found himself stamped into the mud right alongside his love, movement stifled in much the same manner hers was. The convenient thing was that he'd landed in such a way that he could see her face, and they could share in their expressions their mutual torment.

"This..." A boot was stomped firmly into his cheek remaining their only briefly as a player stepped over him. "Is not how I expected our second date to go."

Stuck, Bahr did the only thing he could think to do in such a scenario. Disguise activated, showering the downed players in a cascading waterfall of ever-splintering dimensional fractals. The skill, designed to make the player more difficult to hit, served a different function this time. The surrounding players were finally forced to acknowledge what it was they were trampling, and within a few moments, they had cleared. Bahr shakily pushed himself up, got his knees under him, then offered a hand to Lessa.

"I've got you," his voice sounded, heavily modulated by the effects of Disguise. "Let's go."

"You're a real handful, Mari," she chuckled, shaking her head at her friend's comment. Cordelia gave her a crooked smile of her own. "Of course I would... and no, I haven't seen Baldur at all around here. To be frank, I wasn't sure if he was going to come since this whole thing sounded like a scam right off the bat," she muttered, looking around the crowds of players before sighing in defeat.

These things are really no joke, huh. She sighed, watching as the situation unfold in front of her. She wasn't sure if she should even be surprised anymore. Reviving monsters? That totally seemed fair... and a sign. She squinted as she read it... and concluded that the whole playerbase of this fight shared a single brain cell.  Maybe even less than that.

"Alright, let's get this over with," she mumbled, rolling her head before she activated another sword art, now focused the Rain Minion. Perhaps if she were to knock out this thing, it wouldn't be able to revive the rest of the... things.

Like a bolt of lightning, she charged towards the amphibious(reptilian?) creature. Unlike the swine, this one didn't seem to be quite as quick on its feet, and she managed slice a deep cut into it, which she honestly found surprising since these things seemed to be unkillable. Immortal, even.

Down to nothing but 50 HP and a dream now. The solo player was really beginning to worry for her safety now. If they didn't figure something out quickly, the were all going to meet the gods with microwave brain. Bearing her sword once more, the raven-haired player gripped her sword tightly. It hummed quietly with power as she charged her next opponent, the one who could resurrect its fallen foes. If they could kill it first, it wouldn't be much of a problem at all.

The katana she wielded lashed through the fishes, scaly hide. While her damage still couldn't compare to the other's around her, she did her best to aide in the damage dealing department. If all the lower level players hit the enemies, they can actually do enough damage together to match tougher opponents that even the higher leveled one's here could have trouble with. Here's in hoping.

Shye was completely dumbfounded. Just like her fellow tank companion, she had no idea what she was supposed to do in this situation. If she attempted to attack now, she could be taking too much of a risk to apply a single point of damage for no possible gain beyond... well that one point of damage. Her healing was inefficient since she couldn't heal anyone past their maximum hit points, which continued to get even lower now. Panicking time?

The redhead's breathing got a little out of hand before slowly her thoughts started to consume her. If someone died, it would be her fault cause she couldn't heal them? No no, it's not your fault Chelsea. The boss had even reduced her HP into the double digits and she was just beginning to get comfortable with her bigger pool of health. What does she do now? Try to fight or try to heal? Neither would be helpful at this point.

The Fox grinned, glad that they wouldn't make this epic escape scene for the players anything more than a trumpet call. It wasn't meant to be an easy victory, nor did she expect. Hell, she didn't even expect anyone to make it out of the game if  they did finish this boss off. Well, if they were going to do it for real, they needed to balance their damage out between every enemy and try to lower them all to zero at once. If they could do that perfectly, they might actually stand a chance at getting out of this video game with a early release.

Obsidian Scythe lit up in its usual white hot flame before the girl turned into a tornado of white light and death. Wishing she could do more damage, even though the attacks that she landed were critical hits, she would complain too much. She wasn't alone in this fight, after all.

Nee-chan and her friends seemed to be pretty pre-occupied with the fight to pay her much attention right now, so maybe showing off wasn't really that necessary. She should just do what all of them had came here to do, except for her: Kill these bosses. She was really only here by coincidence, but whatever. It just meant that she could at least get some good experience from the fight and maybe level up a bit.

The blade that she wielded in her hand lit up a deep purple. It's hue seemed rather sinister, matching the appearance of it's user pretty well all things considered. With her blinding speed, she attempted to hack the legs off the giant fish monster thing, but wasn't quite able to make a good connection. A little frustrated with her inaccuracy, she moved out of the way of other player's attacks before she somehow got smacked by one of their weapons.

Even Warren, oblivious as he was, knew that this boss was no joke. The way they effortlessly flexed and screamed their way through half of the collective health bars in one motion was not to be trifled with. And the Rain Minion, sitting imperiously while smoking what Warren could only recognize as a doobie, just summoned a sign out of nowhere when one of the combatants sat on its lap. It was like he was stuck in an episode of Looney Toons of something. Then there was the fact that Oscar's fearsome hound had just been replaced with a window into the realm of the Old Gods. Warren was simply too stunned to move. It wasn't like he could do much of anything anyway. His tiny energy bar coupled with his low level made him feel small in comparison with these Gods. Indeed, divine judgement had fallen upon them. All he could do was wait for the end to come. Whatever sins he had committed, upon seeing the majesty laid out before him, he was certain he deserved this retribution.

Honestly, Lessa found the whole situation pretty demeaning. Not to toot her own horn, but she was a guild leader, a once-frontliner, and a decently powered player. She had recently hit level fifty! And yet here she was, with a bunch of level one feet in standard-issue boots stomping on her pretty, custom gear. And where was Riker? Had he charged on ahead? “This is humiliating,” the blonde mumbled into the mud.

A sudden presence beside her caused Lessa to turn, and she was rewarded with the image of an equally-trampled Bahr.

"This..."

She waited patiently as his face snapped back after being comically squashed by a boot.

"Is not how I expected our second date to go."

“It’s still going better than some of my other dates,” she quipped cheerfully, then winced as a toe was driven into her hip. Her smile melted like snow in the sun as her boyfriend suddenly disappeared from view. Only when players began dispersing did she put two-and-two together.

“Thanks,” she told him, accepting the offered hand and allowing Bahr to pull her to her feet. The force of the motion propelled her into his chest, where she gave him a quick squeeze before peeling off. “I’m going to go try this again.”

Shaking the grime from her billowing cloak, Lessa plunged back into the throng. This time, Arcturus lit with a heavenly gold light. The pleasure that burst through her was just as brilliant. “I’ve got you this time,” she snarled, gaze fixed on the obnoxious boss. It’s stupid little reptilian face looked right at her, its dumb, beady eyes seeming to find her in the crowd.

Whose idea was it to make such weird-ass enemies? she mused as her blade arced, dragging mud and crimson across the creature’s scaly hide.

"Have you ever seen so many nerds in one place?"

Jackpot's shoulders tensed as he heard her voice. Now Lilik had joined the fray?

"It's all so fascinating. They're so into it."

Great. So now he was surrounded by attractive women who more or less hated him. In one of the scariest endeavors he'd ever suffered since getting trapped in this virtual hell. He almost felt as though being avoided by them would have been better.

"H-heyyyy Lilik." It almost sounded more like a question than a greeting. Had he held the "hey" too long? Oh god, he'd held the "hey" too long, hadn't he? Back in high school, if a girl did that, guys were supposed to assume that meant they liked them. Would Lilik think that? Had he greeted Elora like that? Jackpot cast his whiskey-colored eyes on Dederick, who was too distracted drilling holes into the bosses with his eyes. Jackpot was on his own.

"U-uh, Elora, this is Lilik. Lilik, Elora. You two should, uh, talk." And allow me to excuse myself from this entire situation.

Though Dederick usually tried to ignore such things, he couldn't help but notice that Jackpot was more off-kilter than usual. Dederick had always known the man to be very smooth, suave, and confident. Especially around women. Had he lost his zeal, or did he just turn into a blubbering idiot under pressure? It was difficult to tell, and Dederick didn't care enough to get to the bottom of it, anyway.

"Can you guys quiet down? I'm trying to concentrate," spat Dederick over his shoulder. Trying to discern just what the hell Jackpot had gotten them into was making it difficult to focus.

"Concentrate on what? Being a statue? Color be surprised," came Jackpot's sardonic reply.

Dederick wanted to argue, but in the end, knew Jackpot was right. He wasn't contributing anything to this fight, besides putting himself between the Kings and his impromptu party. A part of him wanted to rush into the chaos, but he knew he wouldn't contribute anything of value. His place was here, with his people.

"Maybe you'll come to your senses and thank me for it some day."

If MISERY was impressed with the diabolical machinations of Cardinal before, he was absolutely elated now. Not only were these beasts slashing the players' collective vitality efficacy in half every turn, but they were capable of being revived. Damn, this computer really knew how to knock people down a peg.

Even players he'd heard of as being particularly powerful, such as the ever-arrogant Bahr - "Crimson Marauder," "Bloodedge," "I'm-Too-Cool-To-Make-My-Guild-Info-Public McGee," or whatever it was he was going by these days - were being stamped into the mud amid the frenzy spurred by these creatures. If MISERY were in the market for a mentor, he'd choose these three in a heartbeat. He doubted anyone else so adept in crushing dreams existed within Aincrad.

Other, less renowned players such as Jackpot and Lilik were there as well - not that they'd done anything of note. MISERY had been keeping silent tabs on them ever since their first encounter in the former's shop. But who else was with them? A white knight and a total noob. Great. Maybe they weren't as interesting as MISERY had been hoping.

For now, MISERY recognized his incompetence in this fight. The monsters were immune to status effects, and it was the only way in which he could inflict damage. Trying to attack them now would not only be futile, but absurd. So he continued to blend into the crowd, making himself one with the chaos.

Of course Lilik noticed the hesitation, but she gave no indication. Rather, she merely stared at the woman he was doing a piss-poor job of introducing her to. Elora was cute, but pretty fragile looking. Wonder if people think that about me, she mused, though only for a split second. If that were indeed the case, it was high time she get involved in the fighting.

"No can do, Jack," she answered, giving her massive spear a quick twirl. As she leveled it across her chest in a ready position, she gave Elora a quick wink. "Gotta hop in before there's nothing left to kill."

Without another word, the long, lanky player lunged into the fray. It was easy enough to avoid the other players when she had no regard for their safety or well-being, though she did nearly trip over some clumsy blonde who flopped like a fish in the mud. It's like an idiot's attempt at a snow angel, Lilik thought, bemused. When she finally drew close enough to see the enemies in all their glory, she pursed her lips.

The lizard-looking one, she decided. Everyone else appeared to be attacking it, and at this rate, maybe she could snipe the final blow. Soundlessly, the spearwoman plunged her weapon into the effing Lizard King.

Looking at Jackpot gave Elora no comfort because he looked like he had been scared shitless by the pandemonium. "It's all so fascinating. They're so into it."

Oh god oh god, she's talking about me. My reputation is going to be ruined before it even started. Suck it up, Elora! Make a recovery! "HAHA, RIGHT?!" Too exuberant, reign it in! "Yeah, this honestly isn't worth my energy. I probably shouldn't be here right now." Ok, well maybe that was admitting a bit too much.

Her attention shifted somewhat nervously between Lilik, whose demeanor was off-putting and Jackpot, who -- well -- she didn't want to look at him any longer. It was still difficult to focus with tears welled in her eyes. She reached up with her arm and entered a turn, appearing as though she was stretching her muscles. Quickly whipping her eyes with the cuff of her glove, she finished her rotation to stand facing the statuesk player. He was a little bit more comforting to look.....no....he wasn't really. Something about his cold presence only heightened her uneasiness.

Raidou whispered in anger as it became apparent that the beasts were immune to hatred completely. An adjust of the glasses on his nose with a glare that punched through the panes of clear material, amber eyes scrunched into a scowl. With a grin that's hidden within the confines of his bucket helmet, he looks to Sam with a nod "Aye, hell or victory. I'll show you who lifts." Griswold would not say it, but being rebuked by the creatures had left emotional scaring that perhaps time would not heal. They had to pay, for he lifted. Among the voices, the Kings heard confusion. General uncertainty about what the bosses were, or what they meant. Inquiries about how they were they way they were. Some of them seemed to believe that killing all three mobs at the same time was the key. Some players bragged about other players for no apparent reason. Some stood idly by, simply waiting for the next wave to come.

For others, a sudden, universal understanding that the fight was not what it seemed, and that Rain Minion 12 was the key to securing the fate of the others. And then a sinking feeling as they struck the smug fish again, and again, and again. Each blow bringing it closer to total exhaustion of its health bar, but never to absolute depletion. Eventually, its health refused to tick down any further, remaining stalwart within its virtual container despite the continued abuse Rain Minion 12 suffered.

Some players were strategizing. Others were arguing. Some were helping their companions out of the muck. Others, stomping them right back into it. Some complained about the mechanics. Some remained unusually optimistic, despite facing certain death. The only sentiment that seemed to be shared by the whole of the crowd as an overwhelming resentment for the creatures standing in front of them. And so they continued to fight, even if they knew it wouldn't mean anything.

How foolish.

Eventually, Gob-Gob fell again. Its pieces dispersed, then reassembled just as quickly, presenting the goblin's rippling frame to the masses once more. As it respawned and flexed out over the crowd, the players would feel their health diminished once more. Swine Jesus, who had almost forgotten it was even there, squealed in response, sealing the damage as permanent. Rain Minion 12, who had not done anything the entire fight thus far besides snapping its fingers when the time came, took in a deep breath, rematerialized the accessories that had been destroyed in the last round, and... continued to sit there, doing nothing.

"Nyek-nyek-nyek-nyek..."

That's when people would begin to hear it. A faint chanting.

"Nyek-nyek-nyek-nyek..."

It gradually grew stronger, and louder. Before long, they would reveal themselves. A helping of the players that had fleed before had returned, in formation, green robes with large hoods covering their features. They each held a single candle, and their simultaneous chants pitched together into an overwhelming cacophony.

"Nyek-nyek-nyek-nyek..."

So this was what was happening, now. A cult to worship the fish god. They marched around the battlefield, their chant unceasing, paying tribute to the immortal who remained in its throne. Their idol paid them no mind, choosing to spare them from its influence as reward for their unconditional loyalty. The players who fought against the Kings, however, would not be so lucky.

Continue, warriors.

The letters appeared and hung in the air, but only for a moment.

Show us how you plan to defeat us.
